Loebsack representative to hold office hours Congressman Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, will have a member of his staff in southern Iowa for open office hours.

Dien Judge, Loebsack’s district representative, will be in Osceola. Judge will be on hand to work with individuals who are having difficulty with a government agency, have suggestions for Dave, or would just like to share their concerns.

The 97th Clarke County Farm Bureau annual meeting was held Thursday, June 4.

James ‘Jimmy’ Roshto Osceola

James A. “Jimmy” Roshto Sr.,78, of Osceola died Friday, July 3, 2015, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

F u n e r - Roshto al services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston.

Pastor Ed Adcock, Osceola Full Gospel Church, will officiate. Interment will be

at the Guss Cemetery near Gravity. Open visitation and family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday July 8, one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the family.

James Alfred Roshto Sr., the son of Richard Alexander and Catherine Elmer (Galloway) Roshto, was born on May 20, 1937, in Baton Rouge, La. James served in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the service at Baton Rouge, La,, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

James was discharged just prior to the beginning of the Korean Conflict. On Decem-

ber 24, 1955, James married Joyce Marie Hazel in Woodville, Miss.

Jimmy drove a semi truck most of his life. He drove for several different companies from coast to coast and has lived in many different places over the years. The last company he drove for was the Hahn Company, based in Oklahoma City, Okla. He retired in 1995, due to medical reasons. Jimmy moved to Iowa from Arkansas and lived in Nodaway, Iowa, for 10 years. He has lived in Osceola the past two years. In retirement, James enjoyed working with his hands and loved woodworking. He was a member of the Osceola Full Gospel Church. James’ family was very important to

him.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Joyce Roshto, Osceola; his children: Eva (Maurice) Austin, Osceola; Liz Brassfield, Bono, Ark.; Garie Holland, Osceola; James (Heather) Roshto Jr., Villisca; Deanne (Jeff) Stacy, Huntsville, Ark.; David (Amber) Roshto, Jonesboro, Ark.; Maurice (Kim) Roshto, Wesley, Ark.; Joe (Jennifer) Roshto, Bono, Ark.; and Brandon (Brittney) Roshto, New Albany, Miss.; Several grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James Anthony Roshto; three brothers and one sister.

Conservation Station coming to Clarke County Fair Water Rocks! presents the Conservation Station — a mobile learning center that educates audiences of all ages about the importance of healthy soil and clean water.

It will be stopping at the Clarke County Fair in Osceola 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 18.

Visitors to the Conservation Station can learn how everyone can do their part to help preserve and protect soil and water — essential natural resources. The free, fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids and adults teach about watersheds and the effects of rainfall on the land.

A popular activity is the

“Poo Toss” where participants try to throw rubber doggy poo into wastebaskets for prizes and learn why picking up animal waste is a good thing.

The Conservation Station’s rainfall simulator offers a strong visual of how land management choices affect soil and water.

The rainfall simulator demonstrates the effects of rainfall on different surfaces in agricultural and urban environments. Water runoff and subsurface drainage are collected in clear jars to show what is coming off the various soil surface types including tilled soil, cover crops, green roofs and pervious pavement.

Since 2010, the Conservation Station has traveled to every county in Iowa for community festivals, county fairs, field days, farmers markets and school visits. Water Rocks! is a statewide youth water education campaign that uses a variety of resources to bring awareness and appreciation of water. Fry releases new law information Rep. Joel Fry, R-Osceola, released information on notable bills passed during the last legislative session that went into effect July 1.

“I look forward to continuing my conversation with Iowans this summer and fall, getting their feedback on the laws we passed this session, as well as their ideas for future legislation,” Fry said.

According to Fry, the following is a brief list of bills that will go into effect July 1: House File 646 – USE OF PHYSICAL PLANT

AND EQUIPMENT LEVY (PPEL) FUNDS - This bill gives school districts more flexibility by expanding the use of PPEL to include the repair of equipment and technology, school buses, and recreational equipment purchased with PPEL dollars.

House File 227 - Strip Searches - If a person is arrested for a scheduled violation or a simple misdemeanor and is not being housed in general population of a jail, they shall not be subject to a strip search without prob-

able cause. A person who will be housed in the general population of a jail may be subject to a strip search or a visual strip search.

House File 558- FUNERALS AND PROTESTSHouse File 558 prohibits disorderly conduct within 1,000 feet of a funeral or memorial service. Current law prohibited disorderly conduct within 500 feet of a funeral or memorial service.

House File 570-RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON PUBLIC PROPERTY - House File 570 protects

municipalities from claims of negligent design or construction of a public facility for recreational activities.

The bill also exempts municipalities from liability claims relating to acts or omissions by employees from a person engaged in recreational activities if the person knew or should have known the risk created by the recreational activity.

College news Missouri University of Science and Technology ROLLA, Mo. — Missouri University of Science and Technology announces the names of students who made the honor list for the spring 2015 semester.

To be included on the honor list, students must have carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0.

Founded in 1870 as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Missouri S&T is a public research university of 8,600 students and is part of the four-campus University of Missouri System.

Audra Robins Osceola

Audra Robins, 100, of Osceola died July 3, 2015, at Southern Hills Specialty Care.

Services were 11 Robins a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Marty Burgus officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Care Initiatives Hospice. Online condolences may be left at www.kalefuneralhome.com.

Audra Beatrice Robins, daughter of Dora Mae (Hammers) and Thomas DeBerry Sr., was born May 22, 1915, in Camdenton County at her home near Stoutland, Mo. Audra was baptized into Christ in a Baptist church near Stoutland. She later attended the Weldon Christian Church.

Audra moved from Stoutland to Iowa at the age of

16 with her family. She had attended school in Camdenton County, Mo., before moving to Iowa and finishing in a school around Weldon.

On Jan. 17, 1933, Audra married Gayle D. Robins in Princeton, Mo. Gayle died in December 1982.

Audra farmed beside her husband in Clarke County for nearly 44 years.

Audra is survived by her sons, Gary (Delores) Robins of Murray and Terry (Judy) Robins of Osceola; grandchildren, Rick (Diana) Robins, Christie Robins and Dean (Janet) Robins, all of Murray, Dawn Hartman of Creston and Dusty Pett of Des Moines; nine great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Audra was preceded in death by her parents; grandson Marty Robins; brother Thomas DeBerry Jr.; sisters, Bertha DeBerry and Oma Stone; sister-inlaw Florene DeBerry; and brother in-law Ed Stone.

BACK IN TIME ‘Somewhere in France’ WWI letters home from Woodburn soldiers

Frank Cecil Davenport was the son of William and Emma (Adamson) Davenport.

Frank was 28 years old when he enlisted on Feb. 22, 1918, at Camp Dodge.

In April, he sailed from Long Island, and trained in England before arriving in France with the 139th Iowa Infantry, 35th division.

Camp Mills. I took $10,000 of U.S. war risk insurance so I am worth more dead than alive. I figured if I got out I would not miss it and if I got hurt I would have something to keep me. I am getting anxious to get into it and yet I know what it means.

Somewhere in France, July and September 1918.

I seen a letter in the Sentinel I was sent about Isaac Davis being killed. I want to live and get one that got Ike (Isaac) any if I don’t do anything else.

Have just been relieved from the trenches. Were there about a month. I want it to end for I sure want to be home by Christmas. I can hear the noise of the big guns but they are not very close to me.

On Oct. 29, 1918, word was received that Frank was reported

lost or taken prisoner at the Battle of Argonne. His family did not know until weeks later that he had survived and was a prisoner.

Frank’s platoon had become separated from the company during the battle. He and 22 others were captured while trying to hold the line. They were marched towards the Rhine and arrived in Rastatt Oct. 18. The “Bull Pen” only held about 500 prisoners.

Other than poor food, carrot or turnip soup twice a day and a fifth of a loaf of dark bread, they were not treated badly.

Oct. 28, 1918, from German prison camp I am in good health.

When you write you might send me two cartons of Camel cigarettes and about five pounds of Hershey bar chocolates. Put them in a good box and they will come through all right. I can write one card every Sunday and every other Sunday one card and a letter as well. Hoping that this will find you as well as it leaves me.

The armistice was signed Nov. 11, but the prisoners didn’t find out until a few days later. They had Frank working at a gas plant.

Vichy, France, Dec .14 — We left Germany the 8th traveled through Switzerland. The Red Cross had a nice feed for us. We are in the Base Hospital. I do not

know where we go from here but I hope it is for the good old USA. Dec. 25 — I think what a wonderful Christmas it is.

By March 1919, he was still in France, and arrived in the states before May 1919, when he was discharged at Camp Dodge.

Frank married Margaret Fox, a 1911 Woodburn graduate, on Feb. 8, 1920. They lived in Des Moines where she was a college teacher and he owned a grocery store at one time. Frank passed away on April 16, 1966.

Prescott is named scholarship winner Samantha Prescott, daughter of Gerald and Patricia Snyder, was one of the two recipients of the Clarke County Farm Bureau $250 scholarships offered to Clarke County Farm Bureau member seniors.

Prescott is a student at Murray High School and has been involved in many extracurricular activities

both in school and in the community, including basketball, track, s o f t b a l l , Prescott football manager, National Honor Society (secretary), FFA (reporter/treasurer, Green-

hand, proficiency, academic achievement awards), Clarke County animal rescue league, Demo Derby Clean-up crews, Lions Club fruit baskets, activities at Clarke County Fair and working backstage in spring and fall plays.

All these extracurricular and volunteer activities have given Prescott a wide variety of opportunities and

experiences. She is known for her quality work ethic, good time management and high goals for herself.

Clarke finishes second in SCC

The 2015 Clarke softball season has been full of ups and downs, twists and turns.

But big wins over a nineday stretch have head coach Lindsay Diehl believing her team is peaking at the right time, as it heads into postseason play. (The Lady Indians opened Class 3A regional play Wednesday against Central Decatur.)

“I think we’re finally starting to operate on all cylinders at the right time, hopefully,” Diehl said.

She has plenty of reason to be optimistic, as the Lady Indians finished the season with wins over Class 2A No. 2 ranked Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and over Class 3A No. 3 ranked East Marshall.

Clarke won five of its last seven regular season games, starting with three wins over Albia on June 30 and July 1.

The Lady Indians rolled to an 11-3 win at Albia on June 30, starting the streak.

Senior Sara Andrew had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Kassidy Spurgin and Sydnee Redman each drove in two runs. Vanessa Bakley also finished with four hits and drove in one run. Chynna Beydler and Amanda Kindred each drove in one run, as well.

one walk.

Clarke then scored wins of 9-1 and 6-4 in a varsity doubleheader over Albia on July 1.

Redman earned the win in the 9-1 victory, giving up four hits and striking out four with three walks.

Ally Deutsch hit a grand slam home run for Clarke, while Bakley hit a solo home run. Redman drove in two runs Deutsch and Kindred finished with one RBI. Boyce earned the win in the 6-4 victory, striking out nine and giving up nine hits.

Andrew and Redman each homered and drove in two runs.

“It was great to get on that three game roll going into Eddyville,” Diehl said.

“I honestly had not paid enough attention to the conference standings. When I looked earlier in the season, I saw we were sitting fourth.

The conference wasn’t even in my thought process. I was just trying to get the girls to play their best softball.”

Still, thanks to a split on July 2 in the doubleheader, Clarke ended up second in the South Central Conference behind the Rockets.

Clarke forged ahead 2-0 early in the first game on the strength of a Redman two-run homer, but Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

The Rockets took a 3-2 lead after five innings, when Redman became ill and left the game in favor of Boyce.

“The defense got rattled

by that, by switching pitchers in the middle, without that being the game plan,” Diehl said. “Alex threw well.”

But Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont scored three more unearned runs against Boyce for the 6-2 win in the opening game.

Clarke rallied for a 9-6 win in game two, however, earning a split with the Rockets.

Clarke jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 9-2 through five innings. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont fought back to score four runs in the sixth inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Bakley hit a solo home run, while Spurgin finished 2-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBI. C h y n n a Spurgin Beydler, Deutsch and Megan Linskens each drove in one run in the win.

“We came back and put up a ton of runs, luckily early,” Diehl said. “That gave us second in the conference.

I was pleased with the girls they were able to do that.

We’re in a decent little conference.”

Clarke then traveled to Carlisle on Friday, where the Lady Indians played Class 4A fifth-ranked Carlisle and then Class 3A third-ranked East Marshall, who is in Clarke’s regional.

The Lady Indians opened with a 4-3 loss to Carlisle.

Andrew hit a home run and a triple, driving in two runs in the loss. Boyce struck out five and gave up just four hits.

The Clarke baseball team ended its 11-game losing streak here Friday with a 7-6 win over Central Decatur.

The win improved the Indians to 5-17 for the season.

Clarke jumped to a 1-0 lead after one inning, before Central Decatur scored two runs in the top of the second.

The Cardinals eventually took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Clarke exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-4 lead.

After scoring a single run in the fifth inning, Central Decatur knotted the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, before Clarke answered with a walkoff win in the bottom of the seventh.

Zach Harmsen pitched the distance for Clarke, giving up just two hits. He issued eight walks in the con- Harmsen test, but

struck out 10.

Sophomore second baseman Billy Otto drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Clarke.

He fini s h e d Otto 3-for-4 with a stolen base and one RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Gabe Crawford hit a two-run double.

Dustan Van Loon was 2-4 with a double and one RBI. Reed Kale finished with a double and a stolen base. Gable Reece and Skylar Johnson each drove in one run for the Indians.

Ricky Marcus took the loss for Central Decatur, pitching two innings of relief and giving up one run on four hits, while striking out one. Dylan Gibson pitched three innings and gave up six runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Keaton Minnick also pitched an inning for Central Decatur, which fell to 6-17 with the loss.

The win for Clarke came

after suffering a doubleheader sweep to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on July 2.

Clarke lost games of 7-1 and 13-3 to the Rockets.

Reece took the loss in the 7-1 defeat, giving up seven hits and walking four with seven strikeouts.

The Indians managed three hits in the game, with Crawford, Kale and Reece each hitting a single. Gordon Witt scored the lone run for Clarke after drawing a walk and stealing a base.

Van Loon was charged with the loss in the 13-3 defeat, pitching 2 2/3 innings and giving up 12 runs on 11 hits with two walks. Trevor Kirkpatrick pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit.

Harmsen hit a tworun home run for Clarke in the first inning, while Reece drove in one run.

Kale, Johnson and Conner Deutsch each finished with one hit in the loss.

Clarke finishes the regular season at home Thursday against Lamoni, before starting postseason play 5 p.m. Saturday in Stuart against Panorama.

Prior to the game against Carlisle, Diehl had the opportunity to scout East Marshall in its first game.

Because right now with this group of kids, we just need to believe in themselves. And we beat them 14-4, so now they’re feeling pretty confident knowing that’s who’s probably coming out of the

top of the (regional) bracket.

We have to take it one pitch at a time, one game at a time before we get to that point.”

Still, the win was a big confidence-booster for Clarke, which finished the regular season with a record of 1717.

“I’ve second guessed myself, why did I build this tough schedule. Were we really ready for it?” Diehl said. “I think it is going to pay off. We’ve been in tough ballgames with those pitchers. All they needed was to believe in themselves. Now they know they can beat them (East Marshall). I’m really excited to get going on Wednesday.”

BUSSEY — After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Murray rallied for a 10-3 win here on July 2, clinching the program’s 16th conference title in the past 35 years and its third straight Bluegrass Conference championship.

Interstate 35 10, East Union 0 AFTON — Interstate 35 finished the regular season with a 10-0 win over East Union here on Friday.

The win improved the Roadrunners to 12-4 in the Pride of Iowa Conference, finishing in third place behind co-champions Wayne and Martensdale-St. Marys.

Carlyn Stanley gave up one hit in the circle, striking out 13 and walking just one.

Offensively, Shai Major finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Kate Stanley was 3-5 with a double and three RBI. Lily Miller hit a double and drove in two runs.

Josie Wickett and Slye Richardson each finished with one RBI.

Area baseball Interstate 35 21, East Union 2 AFTON — Leading 10-2 going into the seventh inning, Interstate 35 exploded for 11 runs in the seventh for a 21-2 win over East Union here Friday.

Levi Sandquist picked up the win on the mound, pitching four innings and giving up no runs on three hits with with four strike-

outs. Darian Brown pitched three innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Brock Bush finished 4-for-5 in the game out of the leadoff spot with two runs scored, a triple and three RBI. Junior first baseman Garrett Garner was 2-5 with a double and three RBI. Elijah Smith hit a double and

drove in two runs. Sandquist doubled and tripled, driving home two runs. Brown also finished with one RBI. Dylan Kernes, Cole Daniels, Dominic Cresta, Austin Kindley, Wyatt Schultz, Lucas Ealy, Nathan Phillips and Austin Beener each drove in one run for the Roadrunners.

It was a great night of racing on the Windsor Manor Military Honor night at the races on June 27.

Weather gave the track a challenge for the night’s races, but the CCS crew prevailed.

We just celebrated Independence Day. We celebrated the freedom from Great Britain that was secured by soldiers and attested to by 56 individuals who were willing to sign their names to the Declaration of Independence.

And while your opinion may differ from mine, in my opinion, even with all her faults, America is still the greatest place on Earth to live.

What is it that makes American great? We live in a beautiful country and America has an abundance of things.

But the greatness of America is in our freedom and in the men and women who fought so that we could have it.

Those men who signed the Declaration of Independence had far more to lose than they ever stood to gain. And through the years many more have taken the same position that America was worth risking it all.

But, and you knew there was a, “But” coming, didn’t you? But, there’s a problem in America.

And I’m going to tell you exactly what that problem is.

Actually, that problem isn’t a “what,” but a “who.” The problem is me. The problem is me and millions of others who have become complacent and indifferent in our responsibilities in this nation.

Perhaps Edmund Burke said it best when he said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

If you’ve ever read the Scriptures, it’s clear God would rather forgive and restore, than judge. But there’s a condition. The condition is the word “If.” Here’s what it looks like from 2 Chronicles 7: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. How does that happen?

Here are four things every American needs to step up to do — and I’m giving you the most painful one first: We must pay for government.

I know the arguments. “Our government wastes money!”

“They’re fiscally irresponsible, and often even foolish.”

And on and on the arguments go. But even Jesus instructed his disciples to pay their taxes. He didn’t say we had to like the governing authorities, but he did tell us that we must submit ourselves to them. I’m not crazy about it, either, but it’s the right thing to do.

Second: I must pray for government.

I’ll confess that I find myself complaining about government more often than praying for government and I’m pretty certain that I’m not alone in that. But God instructed us to pray for those who are in authority. They need our prayers, and God says it blesses Him and it blesses us.

Win, win!

Third: I must participate in government.

However, other surprises can be time consuming and dangerous. Just such a surprise greeted the Osceola Chamber Main Street Design Committee and Murray FFA volunteers a few weeks ago when they were doing some planting on the courthouse lawn flower bed across from Robinsons.

The planting project is a continuation of the one started by the design committee and Osceola FFA volunteer groups.

The morning project got started off normally with the volunteers digging out the remaining shrubs from

the flower bed and preparing the holes to put the new boxwood plantings in place.

However, when digging in the flower bed, one of the Murray FFA students hit what they believed was a rock.

Project coordinator Jan Rychnovsky told the students it should be cement covering an old sewer line that was filled in years ago, according to research done at the courthouse by Osceola Chamber Main Street Director Derek Lumsden.

While digging to find the perimeter of the cement, one of the students managed to get underneath the cement and pried it open.

Underneath the cement was a 36-foot deep unfilled

well.

Rychnovsky alerted Clarke County Emergency Management Office and they got right into action.

The county brought a load of gravel in to fill the well, which meant that the project stopped on that part of the flower bed.

The volunteers continued on the other half of the flower bed and celebrated with a lunch at Uptown Bistro, provided by Osceola Chamber Main Street.

Rychnovsky said, “There is a lot of work to do on the bed itself now.”
