FIERY TISSUE PAPER LANTERN This fall-colored masterpiece can safely light up your house or patio. The whole family can help make them! It’s a good time to show your kids some easy craft skills, too.
Instructions Use a paintbrush to brush Mod Podge onto the jar, and then stick the tissue paper pieces into the glue. Paint Mod Podge on top of all the tissue paper so when it dries, your work will be protected by a lacquer.
Supplies • Red, orange and yellow tissue paper cut into squares • A glass jar for each child • Paintbrushes • A small LED flickering candle (like those used in jack-o-lanterns) for each child • Mod Podge CS11211 8-Ounce Glue, Sparkle (dries clear, shiny and glittery!) or substitute with watered-down white glue

DON’T WAIT. CHECK THE DATE! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of the National Fire Prevention Association’s (NFPA) three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety. Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Because NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced.
What you need to know • Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. • Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home. • To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date. Mdewakanton Public Safety will be visiting Playworks classrooms during Fire Prevention Week. Join them for their open house Oct. 12, 5-8pm, at 2525 Flandreau Trail NW, Prior Lake. There will be a soup cook-off, fun activities, safety tips, and a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog!

Garlic Parmesan Spaghetti Squash Ingredients 1 large spaghetti squash 4 tablespoons butter Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 6 medium to large garlic cloves, finely chopped 3/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
Directions
Heat the oven to 400 degrees F and arrange on a rack in the middle. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Place the squash halves cut-side down on a baking sheet and roast until fork tender, about 50 minutes. Remove the squash from the oven and let sit at room temperature until cool enough to be handled, about 30 minutes. Scrape the flesh with a fork to make long strands; set aside. Heat the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Add the garlic and cook until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Add the reserved squash, salt and pepper, and toss with tongs to coat thoroughly. Cook until heated through, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and add the cheese, a handful at a time while tossing the squash to evenly coat. Serve with freshly ground black pepper and extra cheese.
