Stage is set for upcoming Houston Rodeo Rodeo is popular tradition for many Houstonians

# by Jeremy Mitschke, Stang Staff

Throughout February and March, the city of Houston is home to one of the country’s biggest Rodeos. The event is held at NRG Stadium, the home of the Houston Texans. The Rodeo is an extremely popular annual event in the city and provides excitement for many locals and tourists. One of the unique aspects of the Houston rodeo is there is also a livestock show and carnival to go along with the entertainment of the rodeo itself. The rodeo provides fun for all ages and is a familyfriendly event. For example, many life long Texans enjoy classic country music, while the nation’s top music stars are also scheduled to perform this year. According to ABC 13 News, the schedule includes a number of popular country music artists, such as Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, and Florida-Georgia Line. These are just a few of the many popular artists people will have an opportunity to see this year. It is clear, there will be many stars to see in the Lone Star State.

Rodeo Houston has become such an anticipated event, that a majority of tickets are sold almost immediately. Junior Daniel Heitshusen said, “I’ve been to the rodeo a few times and my brother got to be in one of the events.” There are still a few single seats available at www.RodeoHouston.com. The concerts at the rodeo begin March 1st, and they will go on for about three weeks. Many people make the rodeo their main place to go for the spring break vacation. The tickets are the hottest tickets in town this time of year. In fact, according to KHOU 11 News, there is an “online waiting room” in order to purchase the tickets. However, if one is not able to purchase tickets before they sell out, people can still attend the livestock cattle show and also ride some thrilling rides at the carnival. For some, this is more enjoyable than the concerts. For those who are going to the rodeo this year, there are many popular things to do and see.

Students make critical decisions in Model UN conference # by Jeremy Mistchek Stang Staff

Last week, a group of talented students had the opportunity to travel to San Antonio, Texas, to participate in the Model United Nations event. The participants, who worked as delegates during the competition were involved in many negotiations, and debates about issues and politics on an international level throughout the competition. In the competition, students from schools throughout the greater Houston area represented a specific country in the competition. A friend from Kinkaid High School, Amir Razavi, who competed at a Model UN event in Atlanta, Georgia, a few months ago, said, “It’s not really debating as much as it is coming together and negotiating in order to reach a compromise or decision that benefits all the countries involved.” These negotiating tactics are critical for future leaders and in practical situations It can be seen that this event is designed to enable young leaders to make critical decisions and learn positive leadership skills. According to the Model UN, top colleges from across the country, such as Harvard and other IVY League schools, work as staff during the Model United Nations competitions. The HC group of students, mainly Juniors and Sophomores

participated in the conferences on January 6-7. One can see how negotiating with other countries in this event is an example of real-world negotiations between countries today. This is important because it allows leaders to create agreements and peace between countries and nations. During the competition, the students also learn the skills of public speaking, debating, researching, and writing. Model United Nations provides an opportunity for talented young students to try to solve many different complex situations and issues facing countries. A total of well over 100 countries and nations are represented during the conference. The Model United Nations program is important, because it forces people to try to help their country and see what they can do to make it more releveant. These often are the type of decisions that are the type of decisions that many politicians globally make in the modern world today. Model UN helps teach high school students the values of leadership, and how to make critical decisions for the countries they represented.

Celebrations The entire group of

delegates enjoy dinner at LaMargarita at Market Square in San Antonio.

Scout goes above and beyond expectations John Stoetzer Gray earns every possible merit badge

# by King Smith, Stang Staff Senior, John Stoetzer Grey, has earned all 138 merit badges. Stoetzer needed 21 badges to become an Eagle Scout but he did not stop there. As Stoetzer continued past 21 he went past everyone’s expectations. Only 4 percent of boys involved with scouts get to the 21 badges, so Stoetzer getting 138 badges is quite the accomplishment. According to Merit Badge Knot, there are 270 confirmed boy scouts to ever get all 138 merit badges. Gray finished his scouting career with the rank of Eagle, five Eagle Palms, eleven Special Awards and 138 Merit Badges. This puts Stoetzer into a very selective group. Stang: Which merit badge was the hardest to get and why? Gray: “The scuba diving badge was particularly hard because I had to actually go out there and get scuba certified which took up the whole weekend.” Stang: Which merit badge did you get first? Gray: “The first badge I got was the wilderness survival badge at the age of 11.” Stang: What made you want to get all of them? Gray: “Well it started out as a sibling rivalry. I wanted to beat the number of badges my brother had. Then I wanted to beat the number of badges that was the troop record then. Then I got to 100 and said wow I’ve come this far I might as well get the last 38 with about six months until my 18th birthday.” Stang: Gray:

Lastly, what have you learned through collecting all the badges? “One of the greatest things I’ve learned is to expose myself to new things. Every single badge is on a different topic. I was amazed at some of the things I would enjoy that I never pictured myself doing. Climbing and rappelling of rock cliffs, scuba diving, whitewater kayaking, and caving. My patrol one time even built our own “Huck Finn” raft out of inner tubes and plywood and sailed down a river racing the other patrols in the troop. I’ve gotten to drive an 18 wheeler around among other great stuff.”

Gun control establishes its control on society The limitations and advantages of gun control # by Spencer Osato, Stang Editor

While many would argue that gun control will have a negative effect on people, many others say that gun control laws will be good for society. Gun control refers to the manufacturing and distribution of small firearms, like pistols and submachine guns. The supporters of gun control laws argue that more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths. According to statistics, there are an average of 32,000 gun deaths per year in the United Armed or Unarmed? The debate on gun States, about 19,200 from suicides, control is one of the biggest in the country,. 11,000 from homicides, and Many questions remain on wether Americans around 700-800 from unintentional will continue to have their 2nd amendment rights. deaths. Many would say that these statistics show that guns are rarely Many people buy guns in order to used for protection and self-defense. protect their family and loved ones. Also, plenty of people think that On the other hand, many others fewer guns would equal fewer crimes believe that allowing people to own and murders committed against guns is opening the window for innocent people. Many of the pro gun more criminal activity. For example, control activists believe that fewer President Barack Obama has tried to guns would make people feel more establish gun control laws in order safe out in public, and there would be to limit gun ownership. While some less robberies. believe that people should have guns As plenty of people believe in order to protect their loved ones, that guns produce more crime, many others believe that allowing many others think that the only people to own guns will ultimately way to ensure their family’s safety lead to increased crime rates.

is by owning a firearm. In 2007, about 875,000,000 guns were sold to civilians, armed forces, and law enforcement agencies. Out of the 875,000,000 guns sold, about 75% of them were sold to civilians, who mostly bought the guns for hunting or for protection. Arguments state that the suicide rates are increased because of more guns, but statistics show that more gun control rates and lower gun ownership does not mean lower suicide rates. According to author Jim Barrett, “The theory that the restriction or elimination of guns would have a positive effect on the overall suicide rate in the U.S. does not hold up under scrutiny.” Even though many want to commit suicide by shooting themselves, they can find other ways to do it without guns. Some also argue that without a gun, they cannot protect themselves against intruders. For example, if someone broke into a house armed with a gun, anyone in the house without a gun could be dead before they could get the opportunity to protect themselves. Another thing to consider is the mental health of people who have applied for a gun or have access

to one. A percentage of people who commit murders are mentally ill, and could experience uncontrollable impulses. That is why many of the patients in mental hospitals are criminals. Everyone agrees that there are many mentally ill people that probably should not own guns, and there are also a large number of people who also believe that guns are essential for protecting their loved ones. While many believe that guns can influence people to commit crime, many others believe that guns are the only way to protect the ones they love. While the United States has the 26th highest suicide rate and the highest gun ownership rate (about 89 guns per 100 people), many believe that the suicides and murders are linked to unstable mental health. By looking at the data, many people can see that limiting guns may be a good thing for society because it could possibly reduce crime rates. However, gun laws can also have a negative effect on society, because the laws take away the item that plenty of people depend on for protection: guns.

Kim Jong-un claims North Korea has hydrogen bombs North Korea could be more scientifically advanced than most people

# by Spencer Osato Stang Staff

Recently, there have been reports by the North Korean government that North Korea has been testing hydrogen bombs. Many experts do not believe that North Korea is actually telling the truth, because the blast radius was too small. According to Dr. Michael Osato, a hydrogen bomb is more powerful than an atom bomb because it draws a large portion of energy from the fusion of hydrogen atoms, utilizing the atom’s tendency to compress energy and explode when ignited. The explosion created is greater than that of an atom bomb. So, if North Korea is in fact telling the truth, they could prove to be a major threat to North Korean enemies, especially the United States. According to the North Korean government, their supposed “hydrogen bomb” has the power to “wipe out the whole territory of the U.S. all at once.” If North Korea has the hydrogen bomb, the country would be far more advanced in their nuclear

Many lives could be lost, and the United States would have underestimated the North Korean scientists. When experts look at the facts, some believe that North Korea does not have a hydrogen bomb, but possibly an atom bomb. However, it may be a long time before North Korea can launch an attack on an enemy, either with an atom bomb or hydrogen bomb. North Korea would have to be able to miniaturize a huge bomb to be able to launch it off on a rocket at a country. Huge technological advancements would have to be made in order to reach that possibility. However, according to the KCNA news agency, Kim Jong-un plans to “achieve greater successes in scientific research for bolstering the nuclear deterrent for self-defense,” meaning that North Korea plans to further their scientific studies. Texas and Texas A&M --What’s the best fit?

America’s choice of candidates

# by Jasmine Mata Stang Staff

# by Allison Brock Stang Staff

For most high school students, especially juniors and seniors, there is a big decision to make. This decision is trying to choose which college is right for you. With so many great universities out there, it is hard to narrow it down to one perfect college. When choosing which college is right for you, it is important to look at a few main points. These main points include, what size school you like, location, and cost. If you do feel like a few certain universities have a majority of what you are looking for, it is a good idea to compare the two closely. Today we are going to compare two universities that have been proven to be very popular among Houston Christian students: The University of Texas and Texas A&M University. While these two universities are almost equally as popular, they are not all that similar. First, is the size of their student body. If you want a school with a large class size, A&M’s near 48,000 students may be right for you. While UT still has a lot of students, it is not near as many with their 39,000 students.

The next thing to take into consideration is location. A&M is located in College Station, Texas, and there is not much of a big city around the university. For those people who do not favor really rural areas, you may not like this. If you are someone who wants to be a part of a more urban area, UT’s Austin location is perfect. It is not a big city like New York, but the campus is location right in the middle of the city, so there is always a lot going on. As far as cost goes, both universities are about the same. UT’s in state tuition, including room and board is about $21,000 while A&M is about $20,000. Another important thing to look at is how likely you are to be admitted. A&M is definitely the easier school to get into with an acceptance rate of 71%. UT on the other hand is much more selective and their acceptance rate is only 40%. So, if you have narrowed your choices down to a couple, it is important to look closely at both universities to insure that you pick the one that is perfect for you.

Within ten short months, the uncertainty of who the next United States President will be will finally come to an end. A front runner for the 2016 presidential election is still unknown, while unlikely candidates still hold the lead. Real estate mogul Donald Trump seems to be striking a chord in what many Americans believe is needed to get this country back on track. Former First Lady Hillary Clinton remains the Democratic front runner but facing strong opposition from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Other popular candidates include U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, Houston local and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, and brain surgeon, Dr. Ben Carson. The Republican candidate pool is wide and diverse, with 10 contenders declared coming from Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and New York. However, as previously mentioned, one of the most popular candidates is Donald Trump. Trump may be leading the polls, but CNN reporter Frida Ghitis says, “Donald Trump is a huge embarrassment for America.” After hasty comments about Muslims entering America, citizens have questioned whether or not Trump is still serious with his intentions on running for president; yet, he still holds one of the top spots for the Republican party. In addition, Marco Rubio’s fate was thought to be sealed after dropping

in the polls during the final week of 2015, but is rising again after the Iowa Caucus. Bloomberg Politics says Rubio “is going in the wrong direction at the wrong time.” Lastly, Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run as a presidential candidate was under scrutiny from Trump, but his U.S. citizenship is not questionable, since he was born in Canada in 1970 to an American mother. As for the Democrats, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are neck and neck for first place. Sanders is the first to give Clinton a run for her money. According to The Washington Post, it seems as Clinton’s numbers drop, Sanders’s numbers rise. As of January 2016, Sanders holds a 27 point lead over Clinton. Trailing behind is Martin O’Malley. Trump referenced O’Malley’s low polls as a “joke” and he should “not even be considered in the contest.” The Iowa Caucus was held February 2nd in Des Moines, Iowa. Ted Cruz won the Caucus with a vote of 27.6%, followed by Trump with 24.3% votes. Hilary Clinton beat out Bernie Sanders by a half of a percentage point. The next primary will be held in New Hampshire on Tuesday, February 9. It’s ten months away, and it is still not clear who will be named president. America awaits the verdict, but only time will tell who the new President of the United States will be.

Texans: Glass half empty or half full?

Disapointing end to positive season leaves Texans with many questions

# by Daniel Baudin Stang Staff

After losing four of their first five games in the regular season, the Houston Texans finished strong with an 9-7 record, winning a division title for the first time since 2012. The team’s defense seemed just as dominant as they were in previous seasons, led by arguably the best defensive player in the league, JJ Watt. Watt led the league with 17.5 sacks this season, and was looking to get a few more in the playoffs. However, the game did not turn out as they were expecting. The team faced the Kansas City Chiefs, a team that was on a ten-game winning streak headed into the playoffs, but because the Texans were division champions, the game was played in Houston, even though the Chiefs had a better record. The Chiefs had not won a playoff game since 1994, but that was soon to change. After starting the game with a 106 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the Chiefs dominated the Texans both offensively and defensively for four quarters. Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer had the worst game of his career, completing less than half of his passes and turning the ball over five times. JJ Watt injured his groin midway through the game and was not able to return, and with him out of the lineup, the defense fell apart. The Texans lost 30-0 at home, losing in the third largest shutout in postseason history. The Chiefs lost their next game to the

reigning Super Bowl champions, the Patriots. Although the season ended in such a disappointing way, the team is very confident that next year will be another step in the right direction. The quarterback situation has been a consistent issue for the Texans, and the team has found some considerably talented players, such as wide-receiver Deandre Hopkins, as well as veteran leaders, linebacker Brian Cushing and defensive tackle Vince Wilfork. The team has plenty of money available as well to spend on other players, and there is the chance that they could sign or draft a new QB. Many fans and experts have voiced their opinions about the Texans, and the majority believe that the team could make a championship run in the next few years, if they can just find the right quarterback to lead the offense loaded with young talent. Although the season did not end exactly as most fans wanted or were expecting, the Houston Texans have shown far more positives than negatives in the past few years, and if the front office can make the right decisions with the current players and future pick-ups, this team could be dominant in the next few seasons. However, if the team makes the wrong moves, they could face a similarly disappointing finish in the future. Only time will tell which of these possibilities becomes a reality for the Texans.

Texans’ failure of a finish Despite making the playoffs, there are still many

questions about the future of the team due to a blowout playoff loss. Houston lost 30-0 to the Kansas City Chiefs in front of their home fans.

New sports building will cause athletes to improve their game

# by Spencer Osato Staff As more student athletes know about the athletic part of the school, more people come to the school in order to train or workout. With this increased number of people, many believe that a bigger workout space is required. Due to this, the school is planning on building a new, bigger workout area over the summer. Many believe that this new sports/workout building will make the gym more accessible to students and the general public. Plenty of people think that with this new building, many athletes will have the equipment to train better. This new sports building may be seen as beneficiary to many athletes around the school. Many athletes believe that the new sports equipment coming from the bigger training area will not only make the athletes stronger, but also benefit their teams by offering more opportunities for conditioning. According to Dr. Price, “The main reason for the building is so that we can improve our athletics department...all good sports programs need a good training facility.” The better conditioning and improved strength may ultimately cause the team to perform better in games or meets. Although the new sports building will be expensive and may take a long time to build, it may draw a bigger crowd to the school. The increased

attention caused from the crowd because of the sports building could make more people notice the school. It could bring in more students through the athletic program, and could cause more people to become curious about what else the school has to offer. The increased attention towards the public domain of the workout space can make the school more known around the city of Houston. With the inclusion of the new sports building, the school can become more known to the public and cause an increase in popularity and students for the school. Athletes can have more opportunities to prepare for games, practices, or meets using this newly acquired space. The building is expected to be built before the new football season next year. However, even though the new building will greatly benefit the athletics department, it will also help promote public health. In a recent interview, school principal Dr. Price stated, “This new building will not only improve strength and conditioning with our athletes, but also promote good health for everyone by encouraging them to stay in shape and maintain good health.” With the building of the new sports building over the summer, athletes, faculty, and many others can find a bigger space to train, get stronger, and get more healthy.

The Motivators behind the players! Behind every Mustang there is a SIdeline Stang

# by Tre Carter Stang Staff Houston Christian has many extracurricular activities like clubs, and sports. But the some of the most popular ones are the sports such as football, basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, track, swimming, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, and cross country. With all these players and with the competition in the district, sometimes the players need an extra support system or a back up to stand with them through the season. So to fill this need, we have the Sideline Stangs, who step up and are that extra backbone behind the players. These girls are similar to how the stage crew, lights, crew and Tech Theater are to the actors in a production. Senior Sideline Stang Alexys Kenvin said, “Yeah, I like being a Sideline Stang; it’s pretty cool. You get to cheer them on when they’re doing well, and coach them up when they’re not, and we bake for them.” A lot of players really seem to enjoy their Stang’s baking and they appreciate the support and concern for their level of play. Each Sideline Stang is a crucial and important part to every sport and individual athlete as a whole. Just like not having one of your toes would make the activity of walking or running an even greater challenge for the body. The Sideline Stangs are the columns that hold the athlete up and allows them to perform at their peak. Which fortunately is a positive consequence that unites the school more and more after every game, meet, and competition. The players would like to give a big shout-out to all the Sideline Stangs and thank them for all their hard work, great support and fantastic food.

Girls lacrosse team gives her thoughts on upcoming season

that’s when I decided that I wanted to move somewhere that I could coach all season in flip-flops. After visiting HC it was an easy decision to make the move because I could see that there was a strong athletic support system and an interest in growing the girls lacrosse program. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the nation and Texas is right in the middle of it all. 2. How do you think the girls lacrosse team will do this season? -Even though we are a young team I’m pretty optimistic that we will have a successful season. Last season was one of the best in program history. I am hoping to build off of that. Dedication to training and commitment to each other as a team will keep the program moving in the right direction. 3. What are your goals for the team this season?

1. What drew you in to coach at HC? -I wanted to make a move from Pennsylvania to coach somewhere warm. Last year I coached all spring in the snow and cold weather and

-One of my main goals is to continue to grow the program. Considering it’s my first season at HC it’s going to be a learning experience for the team and myself. Seven seniors graduated

last year so this season there is opportunity for some younger players step up and shape the direction of the team for the future years. 4. Why girls lacrosse? Do you have any previous experience playing/ coaching? -I have previously coached lacrosse and tennis at both the high school and college level. The past few years I spent as a college head coach helping to start a brand new lacrosse program. I was also a multi-sport varsity athlete in college. 5. Based on what you have seen, are there any specific players you see significantly leading the team this season? -Since we have not been out on the field yet, it’s difficult to gauge everyone’s lacrosse skills. There are a few players that I am expecting great things from this season. A majority of the girls have been on the team since 9th grade. Those are the ones I am going to look to for team leadership. 6. Any additional comments? - I am extremely excited for the season to start and to get everyone out on the field to begin training.

A day to celebrate being single

# by King Smith, Assistant to the Co-Editor

As Valentine’s Day rolls around, so does single awareness day. Single Awareness day happens to fall on the same day as Valentine’s Day, and it is a celebration of being single on a day about couples. Valentine’s Day is all about the love between couples and getting a valentine. single awareness day is all about remembering you do not need a valentine or a girlfriend or boyfriend to be happy. This amazing holiday is celebrated by many people at Houston Christian. Supporters of single awareness day celebrate the day differently than its counterpart. Valentine’s Day is all about taking a significant other out to dinner, getting gifts, and showing as much love as possible. single awareness day is all about eating a lot of good food, watching movies, relaxing and hanging out with friends. While all the annoying friends are talking about what their significant other has done for them on V-Day, single awareness celebrators talk bad about their ex’s and talk about how annoying couples are with their friends. Seniors, Ahonore Varner and Douglas Simpson say, ”We love single awareness day because it reminds us that if we’re single, at least we are free.”

The list of perks of being single in high school could go on forever as could the festivities of single awareness day. Senior Claire Karsten says,” I have a lot of respect for people who celebrate single awareness day, because it shows they can be independent even on a day all about being by yourself.” Single awareness is all about becoming closer with friends and eating fattening foods while watching movies that will make those couples spending hundreds on a dinner jealous. Why choose an expensive steak house, when you can ball on a budget, order a pizza and get a gallon of Blue Bell ice cream? Happy single awareness day and may everyone celebrate Valentine’s Day the right way, by not.

Online dating can help you find a special date # by Jasmine Mata, Stang Staff Since the first online dating sight appeared in 1995, Match.com, this way of meeting people online has grown immensely popular. Today, there are even dating sites to meet your specific needs and wants. For example Farmersonly.com, is a dating website for those people looking for love who also live a busy life full of farming. There are even sites to find those who eat the same diet as you, for example Gluten Free Singles. But, what many people wonder is, do these dating websites really work? How do you even sign up? The website that claims to result in the most marriages is eHarmony.com. The process to sign up is very detailed and you are required to give a lot of information in order for them to find your perfect match. Some things you need to put on your profile include your salary, your idea of a perfect date, and what type of relationship you are looking for. It is difficult to say whether or not the dating website will work for you, because it all depends on what you are looking for. Online dating is a multi-billion dollar industry, so there must be some truth to their claims. According to the Washington Post, “Dating sites are most effective as a kind of virtual town square-a place where random people whose paths wouldn’t otherwise cross bump into each other and start talking.” So, if you’re looking for a date for Valentine’s day this year, online dating just might be the place for you to look.

The Best and Worst Gifts Make sure Valentine’s Day is successful this year # by Allison Brock, Stang Staff

The time of heartthrobs, kisses, lovebirds, and sweethearts has arrived! The most pondered question is what affectionate couples should give each other on this joyous and romantic holiday. Many people would agree that gift giving can go horribly wrong, but there are also many great and romantic ways it can go as well. Buzzfeed shares some of the worst Valentine’s Day gifts sweethearts could get each other. Novelty toilet paper. Junior Carol Batdorf says, “If my boyfriend gave me novelty toilet paper I would hate him.” Heart-shaped meat products. No matter how much he loves to cook, ladies, do not go in this direction. The next item on the list was a diamond ring keychain. Taylor Buchanan says, “I would think he would be hinting at something, but I would want a real ring… not a keychain…”. The Southern says, one of the worst Valentine’s Day gifts to give is a gym membership because “Everyone wants a gym membership, but picking Valentine’s Day as the day to give this gift may lead to a lonely night.” And some of the last on the list include a vacuum cleaner, sugar free and/or reduced calorie chocolate, weight

loss supplements, socks, cleaning supplies, taxidermied animals, and wilted flowers. The Real Simple says some of the best V-Day gifts to give are Brownie Bites. These chocolate alternative treats are each dipped in white or dark chocolate and dusted with a layer of sprinkles. Real Simple also says the perfect gift for the outdoor boyfriend to receive is a leather wrapped candle. This will “transport him to a bonfire in the woods.” Custom treats of any kind are also very popular for those romantically involved. A great gift for her is a Flatterbox, “a few thoughtful words about why you love her.” And of course, boys can never go wrong with flowers and jewelry. Jordyn Behan says, “All of those sound great, but my perfect Valentine’s Day gift would definitely be a giant, giant, giant teddy bear…like huge. The bigger the more ideal.” So this year, when buying the perfect Valentine’s gifts, make sure to get your significant other something they will truly cherish. Stay away from gag gifts and lean towards something that comes from the heart.

Need a pick-up line? The best way to pick up a date for Valentine’s Day # by Gracie Bailliet., Co-Editor I’m not a photographer, but I can picture me and you together. Do you know what my shirt is made of? Boyfriend material. I don’t have a library card, but do you mind if I check you out?

Hershey’s makes millions of kisses a day.. .all I’m asking for is one from you. I may not be a genie, but I can make your dreams come true. Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?

Are you my Appendix? Because I have a funny feeling in my stomach that makes me feel like I should take you out.

There’s something wrong with my phone. It doesn’t have your number in it.

Are you a parking ticket? ‘Cause you’ve got fine written all over you.

If you were a Transformer, you’d be Optimus Fine.

Have you been to the doctor lately? Cause I think you’re lacking some Vitamin Me. You’re so beautiful that you made me forget my pickup line. Are you a campfire? Cause you are hot and I want s’more.

The true meaning behind Valentine’s Day Should Valentine’s Day be celebrated?

#

by Hope Cubbler, Stang Staff Some people inquire the real meaning or value behind participating in the Valentine’s Day holiday. Now, even though most of the people questioning the reasoning behind this tradition are single, that does not mean we should not celebrate it. Valentine’s Day is an important date on the calendar to many, since it gives couples a reason to show affection and that they truly care for their partner. Sometimes this includes going out on a fancy dinner date or simply staying at home while enjoying each other’s company. There are many “myths” so to speak as to why this holiday was created in the first place, but, in reality, the only thing that truly matters is how you spend the day. Many traditions include exchanging heart shaped candy or making the theme of love evident through your actions. Even if you may be braving this holiday of love by yourself, you can still spread

the cheer of togetherness to those you are purely amicable with. Valentine’s Day is not simply just an excuse to make your boyfriend or girlfriend buy you some expensive gift you’ve been dying for, it can be in a sense a breath of fresh air to your relationship. This holiday allows couples to step back and really evaluate the true meaning of love. So yes, I believe that Valentine’s Day is a wonderful celebratory day not only for those in love, but also for those who truly care for those they are close to. This enticing day provides laughter and refreshment to those weary of work and allows couples to reminisce on the wonderful times in their relationship. It is a wonderful way to grow in your relationship and create amazing, special, and unforgettable memories. It doesn’t really seem to matter why we celebrate Valentine’s Day, just that we do. It is just enjoyable and a tradition many people have come to love. ceive is a leather wrapped

To Write Love on Her Arms Women impacting lives daily # by Isabella Jaeggi, Stang Staff

“Hope is real. Help is real. Your story is important.” To write love on her arms is a nonprofit movement dedicated to finding help for people struggling with depression, self-injury, suicide and addiction. The organization exists to encourage, inspire, reform and invest directly into treatment and recovery. It all began with a story, founder, Jamie Tworkowski did not set out to start a nonprofit organization. Initially, all he was trying to do was help a friend and tell her tragic story. Jamie met his friend, Renee Yohe, and talked to her about how she was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury and suicidal thoughts. He began to write about the five days he spent with her before she entered a treatment center. To cover costs of the treatment, he sold t-shirts

and did what he could in order to help his friend. Once she was settled in treatment, he posted the story on MySpace, and the name of the story was “To Write Love on Her Arms.” But it was more than just a story posted on MySpace; the words shed a light on the reality of peace, addiction, sobriety, regret and finally, freedom. Soon Jamie and his friends began answering messages from people all around the world that had read his story. They told Jamie how they longed to lift the heavy weight of depression. They wanted to be alive again; they were yearning for help from Jamie. In 2007, TWLOHA became an official non-profit organization. Celebrate 10 years of TWLOHA, who will be celebrating on April 2nd in Orlando, FL.

Loved and lost couples multiply

This past year’sbest and worst celebrity couple moments # by Jasmine Mata, Stang Staff

In the year 2015, the world of pop culture experienced many relationship rumors, breakups, and new couples. For those people who pay a great deal of attention to what goes on in the lives of celebrities, some of these break-ups were very hard to see. First, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. The two were married for over 10 years, and their split occurred only two days after their 10th wedding anniversary. This was sad to see because they have had three kids together. The next two break-ups intertwine in the most unexpected way. We have the split of two country stars, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton. The couple was married for four years, and made the perfect country power couple. Then comes the divorce of Gwen Stefani and her husband of almost 13 years, Gavin Rossdale. The two had three kids together, and their split was caused when Gwen found out about Gavin’s unfaithfulness, which you can hear about in her new song “I Used to Love You”. The twist with these two couples is that Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are now dating. Blake confirmed it by defending their relationship after it received so much hate from fans. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick dated for over nine years and have 3 kids together. Their relationship struggles were very publicized because of them being on the T.V. show “Keeping up with the Kardashians.” From the very beginning, KUWTK fans made their decision on whether or not they thought Kourtney and Scott would last. Some recently rumored couples have gotten some fans very excited. The most popular being the recent pictures of Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus. The two starred together in the movie “The Last Song,” which is when all the fans fell in love with the two, and then soon after started dating. In 2012, the two got engaged and broke up all within a few months. Just recently, there were pictures seen of the two hanging out at the beach and going to dinner together. Although nothing has been confirmed, many are hopeful that the two will resume their relationship. Another couple yet to be confirmed is the relationship between Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid. Zayn Malik broke off his engagement to Perrie Edwards after a four

year relationship only months after he split off from band One Direction. Rumors started of Zayn and Gigi after they were seen leaving numerous clubs, parties, and hotels together. The two have also posted photos of each other on their Instagram and Snapchat stories. Keeping it within the One Direction group, photos of Kendall Jenner and Harry Styles hanging out on a yacht have surfaced. These two also dated a year ago for only three months. Recently there have been a few celebrity marriages. Most recently, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello had an amazing wedding in at the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach. The photos of the wedding quickly became popular because of how lavish the decorations were. Although this couple got married in 2014, they just recently had their second child, and they are quickly growing in popularity. Kim and Kanye (aka Kimye) have been called “America’s royal family.” Their beautiful and private wedding which occurred in Fort di Belvedere in Florence, Italy was talked about by all the fans. Their first daughter, North West was born in June of 2013, and their son Saint West was born just recently on December 5, 2015. Overall, these past few years for celebrities have been full of break-ups and new couples, and the fans are trying their best to keep up.

Who will be this season’s winning couple? The first two weeks of the Bachelor recap

# by Allison Brock, Stang Staff

After being sent home with his heart broken in season 11 by Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristow, Ben Higgins did not think he had a second chance at finding love. However, he now has a second chance at finding love. January 4th kicked of season 20 The Bachelor, and is predicted to be just as dramatic as previous seasons.First impressions are so important on the Bachelor and, after meeting the women for the first time, Ben was impressed. Some of the most memorable contestants of the first night were Lace, Lauren B., Jojo, Maegan, and Olivia, who received the first impression rose, securing her spot in week two. Former contestants from season 19 of The Bachelor, Becca and Amber, also appeared on the episode, hoping to win a chance with the Bachelor. The two did receive a rose over a few of the more weird contestants, one wearing a giant rose on their head and another coming in with a tiny pony, and one contestant with a unicorn mask on. As usual, there are the season’s crazy and impressionable women. After appearing as a fun, energetic news anchor on week one, Olivia was not expected to be the villain-type of the season. However, after showing how little she cared for the other girl’s feelings and the amount of times she selfishly took with Ben away from the other women, it became clear she would not be a favorite in the Bachelor mansion. However, the craziest woman in the house is Lace. She started off in week one by giving Ben the first kiss of the season, which he did not seem to enjoy. However, she took it as a sign as incredible chemistry between the two. According to Lace, during the rose ceremony, Ben would not look her in the eye, even after giving her a rose and that truly offended her and she pulled him aside to talk about it. A preview has been shown of one contestant, Leah, crying and with a black eye and saying, “Lace is crazy! She punched me in the face!” More and more drama is expected out of this season. For more information and to catch up on season 20 of the Bachelor, visit http://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelor or tune in on Monday nights at 7pm on ABC.

The must sees and the underrated vie for their piece of the pie

# by Tre Carter, Stang Staff To truly enjoy a story you must accept the story as reality or place yourself in that reality. This is a must if you are reading a novel/book and this ability is a special skill that can be developed in time. But for people who struggle with this movies are a great way to skip over or help along the action of placing yourself into the stories reality. Movies have evolved over time and now there better that ever ticket sells are breaking records it seems every other month. Like the great Blockbuster “Star Wars” was the most anticipated movie of the 2015-year with tickets being sold out for the first 2 weeks of its release all across the U.S. Two other anticipated comedies were “Ride Along 2” with Ice Cube, and Kevin Hart and “Sisters” with Tina Fey

and Amy Poehler. These duos of actors and actresses have actually become a great tag team in movies throughout their great careers. Last but not least is the guy everybody roots for is Leonardo DiCaprio as many believe he is a great artist because he has played great roles in all his movies but is hardly ever recognized for his talents. His newest movie “The Revenant” is another anticipated and must see movie. The characters that he usually plays in his movies are usually either fun loving, or the controversial guy. His most recent movies like “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “Django”, “Inception”, and “Shutter Island”. All great movies and must-sees’ movies that you can only truly experience their reality is in theaters.

Artists work on their new albums for this year # by Isabella Jaeggi, Stang Staff

As the new year has arrived, so has new music. Big name artists such as J. Cole, Future, Drake, Kanye West, and Frank Ocean are said to have the best album’s of 2016. With all this talent, according to Complex Music these rappers and singers are said to make a big come back during this year and make impacts on the music world. Complex Music makes it known that the music world already expects greatness from him. Throughout 2014 he proved himself by earning his 13th chart-topping hit “Hotline Bling,” and got his diss track (towards Meek Mill) “Back to Back” to be Grammy nominated. So, the music industry has come to expect great things from Drake, such as his new album “Views From the 6”. This album was originally said to drop in January, but with that date behind us now, the new date is said to be sometime in February. Frank Ocean, a lyrical and music genius that

has been gone for too long. Making his last big debut three and a half years ago with the album “Channel Orange,” he is finally making a comeback. He announced the new album title on tumblr back in April called “Boys Don’t Cry,” and said it was to be released in July. But, sadly he never released anything and no one heard a peep from him. Frank Ocean fans patiently wait and know that there is a light at the tunnel and although there is still no release date, Ocean has hinted that soon the album will be dropping. J.Cole, one of the most known and loved rappers throughout 2014 and 2015 has made a serious come up since he started with his career. With no serious sign yet of a full album, the rapper dropped a tease of his new project at the end of his “Black Friday Freestyle” in November. Complex Music writer Zach Frydenlund states, “What he comes with next might just be his best yet.” Not only that, but it seems

that this starstruck rapper is also making moves with Kendrick Lamar, Compton, California’s own born and raised. Look out for release dates on both Lamar and Cole. Lastly, Kanye West. It feels as though it has been so long since West has released an album. In 2015, songs such as “Wolves’ and “Fade” from his new album “SWISH,” were previewed at Yeezy Season fashion shows. But, his music making became stalled due to their birth of their son, Saint. Within weeks, Kanye was back and and the new music started flowing, with Metro Boomin producing “Facts” and “Real Friends” featuring Ty Dolla $ign in hopes of kicking off a “New G.O.O.D. Friday Series,” with a February 11th release date for the album “SWISH”. With features such as Madlib and Post Malone, West fans can not even imagine what he is cooking in the studio.

Editorial 12 The Force has awakened around the globe February 2016

“Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens” smashes box office records # by Spencer Osato, Stang Staff single weekend gross ($529 million), highest-grossing Star Wars film, biggest December international opening weekend ($281 million), biggest Disney international opening ($281 million), biggest IMAX worldwide opening weekend ($48 million), highestgrossing IMAX film of 2015 ($152 million), highestgrossing Disney release, surpassing The Avengers ($1.52 billion), and many more. Currently, The Force Awakens is currently the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time ($1,734,134,828 worldwide). In my opinion, The Force Awakens was the best movie of the year. It has a great story, lots of action, and phenomenal acting. However, that does not mean the film is perfect. Star Wars: Episode “The Force Awakens” The success of “Star Wars: The Force VIIThe Force Awakens Awakens” has been felt all around the world. The massive fan and critic praise of the film has helped put Star Wars back on was an awesome movie. I the map. bought my tickets the day A short time ago, in movie after the tickets went on sale theaters not so far away, plenty of people in October, and they were almost sold went to see Star Wars: Episode VIIout (even though it was an IMAX movie The Force Awakens. Perhaps the most on a Saturday afternoon)! I went with anticipated film of the year, the movie a group of friends, and we all loved the broke numerous box office records movie. It was great seeing the old Star when it was released. These include Wars gang I grew up with back together, fastest film to gross $1 billion (12 days), and all the new faces added to the biggest worldwide opening weekend and movie’s greatness.

The story was great, but what I loved even more was that the trailers for the movie did not say what the film was about, so I had no idea what I was getting ready to see until the movie started and the classic Star Wars scrolling came across the screen. However, I have to be vague in describing the story, because it could spoil the movie. All I can say is that it is about Kylo Ren (who is like the new Darth Vader) trying to get part of a map to find Luke Skywalker so he can capture him. As the film opens, we see Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac) put the part Kylo Ren was looking for inside a BB-8 droid (the droid that rolls around on a ball), and tells him to take it to the Resistance. Poe is captured by Kylo Ren and the First Order, and stormtrooper Finn (played by John Boyega) feels what they are doing to him is not right, and helps Poe escape the prison. However, they crash land on a desert planet, and Finn teams up with Rey (a scavenger played by Daisy Ridley), the BB-8, and Han Solo to ensure the map gets to the Resistance and save Luke Skywalker from Kylo Ren and the First Order. First of all, the acting by Daisy Ridley and John Boyega was amazing. These two young actors definitely have a bright future ahead of them. Also, director JJ Abrams did a phenomenal job on this movie, and was able to bring Star Wars back into the mainstream. This emotional, action-packed movie was a fun time for everyone.

Even though the film had many great things about it, it also suffered from some big flaws. For example, some of the plot points from the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) have been taken and reused in this movie. I remember sitting in the theater and saying to myself, “Oh yeah, I have seen this before.” Also, I did not like what they did with Han Solo at the end. I know it had to happen, but I think it could have been done differently (if you have seen the movie, you will know what I am talking about). Lastly, there is a fight scene between Kylo Ren and both Finn and Rey, both having had no formal Jedi training. In my opinion, there could have been some changes to the script for Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens that would have made a great movie a tad bit better. Overall, I think Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens was one of the best, if not the best, movie I have seen in a long time. Even though it has flaws, they are mostly overshadowed by the acting, story, and action. In my opinion, if you have not seen it yet, go and see it now (I recommend seeing it in IMAX, it is worth it)! Do not wait for the DVD, see it in theaters! Even a person who is not a big fan of Star Wars will enjoy this film. After I saw the movie, I am definitely going to buy it on Blu-Ray (and I do not buy many movies). I will give Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens 10 out of 10 Houston Christian Mustangs.

He Said/She Said- Debating on the hot topic of “The Bachelor”

# by Daniel Baudin & Isabella Jaeggi, Stang Staff

Daniel Baudin: For a show with a 2.9/10 rating on IMDb, a popular website that rates TV shows and movies, The Bachelor is extremely popular all around the U.S. The reality TV show is about a single bachelor who dates 25 women in search of his true love. However, these relationships do not seem to last. In the 19 completed seasons of the show, 17 of the “winning” couples’ relationships did not last, while only 2 relationships are still continuing. It is hard for me to understand the point of watching a show when the couples that truly “fall in love” rarely last for more than a few months. I do understand that watching is a whole different experience for a guy than for a girl. Most men that watch the show are not interested whatsoever, while many women that watch the show really enjoy it.. From an entertainment standpoint, the show is great. “There are some girls on the show that are just downright crazy,” said Anisha Parmar. “Seeing them all go after the same guy is just really funny and entertaining to me,” she continued. So, yes, from that perspective, the show can be seen as at least entertaining, but in my opinion I just do not see the point in a show where they force people to fall in love. Trying to get one guy to fall in love, then attempt to spend the rest of his life with someone he meets on a TV show just does not seem very real to me. I feel like it is nearly impossible to find “the one” that way. Finding the woman or man that you intend to spend the rest of your life with should be a lot more real than passing out roses to three of the final four women remaining in a competition. I think that trying to make entertainment out of something as special as love between two people is just wrong.

“The Bachelor” The new season of “The Bachelor” has started, with plenty still

voicing their opinions about the show. Many people are praising the show and its new season for its entertainment value, while many are criticizing it for its concept.

Isabella Jaeggi: The Bachelor, as well as The Bachelorette, has been aired for 19 seasons, providing exciting entertainment around the United States. Women and maybe even some men from all around look forward to each season of this show. For most, it really is just for entertainment, supplying drama and romance. Although, statistics show that most of the relationships end, in the beginning the women are signing up for a potential heartbreak. Yes, in the beginning, people are hopeful with the intentions of finding his or her’s wife/husband. It is a reality show, so yes, there is going to be drama, but then again, remember this is what people signed up for. It is reality tv! People need to realize that its intention is to be entertaining. While Daniel attempts to make a valid point about how he would prefer not to watch a show about how people do not actually “fall in love,” he does not realize that this is all for show, but it also depends on who the producers choose as the bachelor or bachelorette, and who they choose for contestants. Also, they do not “force” people to fall in love, as for this season of The Bachelor, I personally believe the producers chose a great candidate to be their Bachelor. He seems genuine and real in comparison to past bachelors. All in all, the show is made for entertainment, with the hopes that the bachelor or bachelorette will fall in love. But again, it is not forced. Both sides know what they sign up for. As a fan of The Bachelor, I would love to see Ben Higgins find love this season.

Love is in the air for “The Bachelor” With all the ladies there.

Bachelor Ben Higgins may have a chance at finding long-lasting love. However, only time will tell how long it may last.

The truth behind Benghazi and what it means for Americans # by King Smith Stang Staff With the release of the new movie 13 Hours, the attacks on Benghazi in 2012 are being brought back into the spotlight. On September 11 and 12 in 2012, the American embassy and CIA covert base in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked by Islamic extremists. At that point in time, it was the largest terrorist attack on the United States since September 11, 2001. On September 11, 2012, four Americans died in Benghazi. These Americans include the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith, and CIA operatives Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. On September 11, Al-Qaeda members attacked the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi and caught the safe house on fire, killing the ambassador and information officer. Later in the night, Doherty and Woods were killed by mortars at the covert CIA base. What is controversial about all of this is how easily it could have been prevented. Roughly a year before that dreaded night, Muammar Gaddafi, the tyrant who ruled Libya, was killed in a long civil war. The country of Libya was freed from Gaddafi’s tyranny and the revolutionaries had won. Despite the toppling of this regime, there was still much unrest in the country, especially in the city of Benghazi. Benghazi was, and still is, a war zone. The U.S. Department of State should have treated our embassy accordingly. In other war zone cities like Baghdad, our embassies are heavily guarded with a large presence of United States military troops. Upon the arrival of the ambassador to Benghazi,

two underskilled military guards were tasked in protecting Ambassador Chris Stevens, this is where the first mistake was made. This embassy was in an extremely volatile area of the world, and it was treated as if they were a danger free zone. Obama has controversial plan for gun control in future

Debate on the 2nd Amendment continues # by Jeremy Mitschke, Stang Staff Over the past months, there have been multiple tragic shootings that have caused many political leaders in Congress, and President Obama, to question whether the right to bear arms should still be a right today. One can infer guns are often used in violent ways. When the founding fathers wrote the Constitution, I believe they made bearing arms a right due to the fact that guns can also be used as a source of defense and protection. I also believe if no one can own a gun in the United States, it sends a message to other countries that we have no way to defend or protect ourselves. A lack of security and protection could lead to attacks from enemy countries, especially due to the fact that if guns are banned, they would know there are only so many ways people can defend themselves. Guns have been used in violent ways in recent school shootings. For example, earlier this fall there

was a school shooting at a high school near Portland, Oregon, where 10 people were killed. Another example was in December 2012, when many young students lost their lives at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. However, the idea that Americans should be banned from owning guns is not logical due to the fact the people who use guns as a plan to kill others, such as in school shootings, are an extremely small group of people. Often, these murderers are mentally ill and know they will likely either die or be put in jail for life as a result of their tragic decision to fire a gun and end the lives of others. Many anti-gun supporters believe banning guns will decrease the amount of violence and deaths dramatically. However, when one looks at the leading causes of death in the world, guns are shockingly lower on the list than one may think. According to a quote from Mr. Sivils, “Sweden and Switzerland are the two

countries with the lowest crime rate, but they also own the most guns.” The statistic really proves that taking away guns will not decrease the amount of crime in the U.S. Although Obama has not banned guns just yet, it is certainly something he seems to be constantly promoting. If he were to do this, he would begin to rewrite the Constitution by removing or redefining the 2nd Amendment. People who support gun control laws believe it will control people who are committing tragic and terroristic acts of murder. However, enemies will still find ways to commit deadly crimes without using a gun. We need to have the right to own guns so that we can protect and defend ourselves as a country in times of trouble.

Will Leonardo Dicaprio finally win? Dicaprio continues to fail to possess an Oscar despite astounding performances

# by Hope Cubbler, Stang Staff

Leonardo Dicaprio is well renowned for his six nominations for an Oscar award over the years. Sadly, as we all know, Leo has fallen short every single time to actually receive one of these envious awards. His most famous movie, Titanic, assured many fans that Leonardo would finally be nominated and receive the award, but even then he was overpowered and not recognized. The nominations that Leo has been eligible for include three for best actor, one for best supporting actor, and one for best picture as a producer. Another movie that Leonardo should have won an Oscar for is The Wolf of Wall Street, in which he played a major role and portrayed the character phenomenally. Dicaprio’s latest film, The Revenant, is coming into theaters and has also been nominated for twelve Oscars. He has received a golden globe for best actor for The Revenant as well. Many Americans hope to see Leo receive an Oscar for this movie because of his astounding acting, and

are showing their pity for the famous actor. There are many jokes floating around social media about Leo’s repetitive loss, including a picture of him grabbing onto a man with the name Oscar, and a caption that states, “The only Oscar Leo will ever hold.” Many fans pity the poor actor and are baffled as to why he has not been presented an Oscar yet, because he surely deserves one for his hard work over his lifespan. Cameron Dasher expresses her views upon this situation by stating, “ I think Leo deserves an Oscar after all this time for his impeccable acting.” I believe that Dicaprio is worthy of an Oscar for his new upcoming movie, even if it is not as amazing as the other nominations. I mean, seriously, he should have won something for one of his other captivating films...just give the man an award.

Comedy Sports team shows talent for improvision

# by Jeremy Mitschke, Stang Staff In Comedy Sports, the actors and actress use creative improvisation skills in the middle of the performance. It is a unique skill, due to the fact that it forces all of the actors to come up with things on the spot. This is what many believe makes it extremely comical, even if it is not intended to be. Alumni Chapel kicks off second semester Second semester chapel brought reunions and remembrances

# by Isabella Jaeggi Stang Staff Every year after Christmas Break, the Houston Christian community is blessed with the privilege of having several students that have graduated from past years come and speak during chapel. This year, we had graduates ranging from 2010-15, including Cody Reeter, Kevin Chin, Carson Taff, Meghan McCurdy, Allison Godfrey and Laura Valby. For this chapel, HC sets the stage with comfortable sofas and plenty of water, so these grads can tell the community just how sweet college is and what they plan on doing in the future. The lovely hosts consisted of both Mike Maddry and Leslie Arnold, who asked questions back and forth to the alumni, with hopes that they respond with some encouraging or helpful insight. They asked questions such as, “How do you manage your time?” and “Did HC prepare you

well for college?” They ask specific questions to help the seniors who will be leaving soon, so they can be prepared for their new chapter of life, which will be college. Throughout the Chapel, more questions were asked and more encouragement was given. Most of the seniors seemed to really enjoy this Chapel, because they were alumni that our community knew and loved. Cody Reeter and Kevin Chin made excellent points about how to manage their time and how sometimes it is hard to manage social and study time, but once you find the balance, college is one of the best experiences of your life. Carson Taff also made fantastic points, he talked about how at the beginning upperclassmen were intimidating and “not the nicest,” but he got involved in a Bible study group, which helped him tremendously. He said those guys

became some of his best friends, and now that he is involved in a Bible study, he is much happier. Allison discussed life at Texas A&M and how great it was to get involved in your community. Laura talked about making sure your priorities are right in college and in your dating life, while Meghan talked about how you shouldn’t let people tell you that you can’t do something, and really work hard toward your goal. All in all, the alumni chapel really impacted the HC community and both students and faculty enjoyed listening to the alumni speak. Paula Bauer said, “I really enjoyed listening to close friends of mine speak and see how much they have grown going through their next chapter of life.” They gave each grade encouragement as well as tips on how to handle that next step in life, college.

Yeeehaaaaaawwww Rodeo Art

# by Tre Carter, Stang Staff The Rodeo has many great attractions such as concerts, carnival, animals and food. But one of the greatest attractions that are not as popular as some of the parts of the rodeo is the art portion. There are many forms of art such as music, sculpting, painting, etc. All art usually conveys’ a message about how the artists’ feels. The art portion of the rodeo was introduced to everyone sometime between 1997 to 1999 but has definitely made an impact on the children’s lives that have participated. The Rodeo usually makes a trip to Houston, and gives kids a great opportunity to earn money early for college, and the awards can be from $1,500 to $38,000. Sometimes the money can even go further because many people support the Rodeo and believe in their cause and make very generous donations.

Grades of the winners are usually from K through the 12th grade and the number of contestants can range from 2,000 to 5,000 in each grade level. Paula Bauer says, “Oh yeah, the art at the rodeo it’s always inside the building in that glass case. I remember when we had to do it. I hated it cause I wasn’t all that good at the time.” Many of us as students have all been apart of this and had a chance at this great opportunity that is offered. Many elementary schools really get into the spirit of the rodeo coming to town, because they might have trail riders come to the school and show the kids around the horses. Then they conclude that day by having their kids participate in the art competition, even if the student feels like they are not a very good artist. Many parents back the schools up in this effort to push the kids for a chance at money towards college.

Spamalot--Way more than a lot of Spam Annual musical tops the charts with lots of laughter and fun # by Daniel Baudin, Stang Editor As their performance dates of February 4-6 rapidly approached, the entire cast of HC Theatreworks’ Spamalot had been working almost non-stop to perfect the show. Spamalot, according to junior lead Cole Little, was a very difficult show to perform. “What made the show difficult was having to sing, dance, and act all at the same time while still trying to get the audience to laugh. The humor of the show is really important, and if we didn’t convey it to the audience correctly then it just wouldn’t be as good,” said Cole. The students had been working almost daily since November to slowly build the show into a spectacular production. Over the past two years, HC’s productions Beauty and the Beast and Pippin have been nominated for 21 Tommy Tune awards, the most by any school in the city of Houston. The Tommy Tunes are awards given out to various high schools for their musical productions throughout the year, in the same way that Oscars are given out to movies. Each year, schools are invited to a ceremony where students can celebrate their shows and see if they won any awards. It is the best way to see just how great their performances go. But just because it took up a lot of these students’ time, didn’t mean that they did not enjoy the show. Alex Dye, another junior lead, said, “I have honestly had more fun in this show with this amazing cast than in any other show that I have been in before. This show is so fun, and being so close to the people in the cast has made it an even better experience for me.” Even though it has been a very time consuming experience for the students involved, it has been very memorable as well. The students were very excited to perform Spamalot for the community.
