‘Glee’ Star Cheyenne Jackson Marries Partner [EDGE Media] “Glee” actor Cheyenne Jackson tied the knot Saturday evening with his partner Jason Landau, People magazine reports. “This means a new beginning for us,” Jackson, who also starred on “30 Rock,” told the publication. “It was love at first sight and this is just the culmination of that.” The couple held an interfaith ceremony as Landau is Jewish. The event was held outside at a friend’s estate in Encino, Calif. About 200 guests attended the wedding, which included

stars like Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Leah Remini, and Alicia Silverstone. Jackson, 39, and Landau met last year while they were in rehab for alcohol addiction. They announced their engagement in February, saying they were made for one another. This is Jackson’s second marriage. The actor divorced his first husband six months before announcing his engagement to Landau, the New York Daily News reports.

Uganda Officials: We Welcome LGBT Tourists [Edge Media] Uganda’s tourism officials said they welcome LGBT travelers to the African country and that they should feel safe, even though lawmakers have pushed to pass a controversial anti-gay measure, Gay Star News reports. The Ugandan Tourism Board recently met with the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association in order to discuss Uganda’s reputation regarding LGBT and straight tourists. The president and CEO of the LGBT organization, John Tanzella, told the website SoSoGay that the board felt that Western media negatively portrayed Uganda over the attempt to pass a bill that would criminalize gay sex with

a life sentence in December. Though many lawmakers backed the bill, it was struck down last month. “The delegation said that gay people are welcome. They were very concerned about the perception of Uganda in Western Europe and North America, and claimed that the backlash caught them by surprise,” Tanzella told the website. “No one thought it would pass. The delegates all pointed out that they have friends and family who are gay.” He added that Uganda was far from joining IGLTA as it needs to go through a “process of education.”

news highlight Former SFGN Employee Accused of Driving Drunk and Paralyzing Pompano Woman Tonya Alanez Sun Sentinel

A 55-year-old woman has been paralyzed and remains in critical condition after her car was struck Sunday by an alleged drunken driver with prior DUI and drug arrests, authorities said. Kim Smith was less than two miles from her Pompano Beach home when her SUV was hit, flipped and struck a tree in the center median of the 4100 block of North Federal Highway, said Gina Carter, a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. Michael Anguille, 29, of Boca Raton, is behind bars at the Broward Main Jail. Deputies are awaiting results from his DUI test, Carter said. Anguille has a pending case in Broward drug court and was acquitted of DUI by a Broward jury in 2012, records show. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office are asking witnesses to the crash to come forward, Carter said. Smith and Anguille were traveling northbound on Federal Highway a short distance north of Sample Road when the crash happened about 7 p.m., Carter said. Anguille was speeding in his 2013 Nissan

Altima in the far left lane, Carter said. ichael He swerved into Anguille the center lane and crashed into the rear passenger’s side of Smith’s Ford Explorer Sport, she said. Smith’s SUV spun counterclockwise, slid into the median, rolled over and hit a large tree, Carter said. Smith and Anguille were taken to Broward Health North Medical Center, where Smith remains in critical condition, Carter said. When Anguille was released from the hospital, he was arrested on three charges: DUI, DUI with serious bodily injury and DUI with property damage, Carter said. When Anguille was arrested for misdemeanor DUI in May 2011, he refused to submit to a DUI test, records show. A Broward jury acquitted him in October 2012. In October 2011 he completed DUI school, and in June 2012 he completed substanceabuse treatment, DHSMV records show. Michael Anguille, in the past, has worked as a freelancer writer and editor for SFGN.

(AP) LITTLE ROCK — A county judge was wrong to find that Arkansas’ ban on same-sex marriage violated the state and federal constitutions, the attorney general’s office argued Monday as it asked the state’s highest court to uphold the prohibition. Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel asked the state Supreme Court to find the ban on gay marriage constitutional, arguing the state’s voters have a right to define marriage. The state is appealing Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza’s May decision striking down a 2004 constitutional amendment and earlier law defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

(Edge Media) The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s medical director, Dr. Robert Bolan, has urged the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) -- in a letter co-signed by officials with more than a dozen other leading HIV/AIDS organizations -- to determine why gay/bisexual men seem to be at greater risk of exposure to, and transmission of, Invasive Meningicoccal Disease (IMD) than the general population. Cases of IMD in the United States have declined to an all-time low over the last decade, but during those 10 years there have been at least two outbreaks (as defined by the CDC) among gay/ bisexual men: one in New York and the other in Chicago. And in Los Angeles, which had 33 cases of IMD from December 12, 2013 to May 2014, 12 of those who were infected were gay/bisexual men; that’s an attack rate 16-fold greater than what would be expected. (Edge Media) A Russian woman was found dead in her car Sept. 7 in St. Petersburg with her throat cut in an apparent murder, Gay Star News reports. A passing street cleaner found the body of Ekaterina Khomenk, 29, early morning last Sunday. Her throat had a 3.5-inch incision and her car’s engine was left running and her headlights were on.

Police spoke with Khomenk’s family, asking if she showed any suicidal tendencies in the past. Gay Star News reports the case is currently being investigated as a murder. Khomenk was a dance teacher and taught tango to same-sex couples.

(AP) Health officials secured a court order telling a man who has infected at least eight people with HIV to stop spreading the virus that causes AIDS. The King County Superior Court order issued Sept. 4 orders the man to follow a health department cease and desist order and to show up for counseling and treatment appointments, The Seattle Times reported Thursday. The name of the man was not released to protect his privacy. He was diagnosed with HIV in 2008 and has spread the disease through unprotected sex, Public Health Seattle & King County said.

If he fails to follow the order he could be jailed for contempt of court.

“We’re not trying to criminalize sexual behavior here,” said Dr. Matthew Golden, director of the department’s HIV/STD control program. “We are trying to protect the public’s health. And we’re trying to make sure that everyone gets the care they need, including the person involved in this.”

Priefer was initially suspended three games after an independent investigation into the claims made by former punter Chris Kluwe found that the coach made several offensive remarks at practices and in meetings while working for the team. Friday’s decision only applied to McQuire, but the judge signaled that Arizona’s gay marriage ban may not hold up after he hears a broader challenge to the constitutionality of the law.

More Storms Ahead for Convicted Weatherman Rob Lopicola now indicted in $14.5 Million-Scam; he’s currently serving a 56 month sentence for having sex with underage boys Jose Lambiet GossipExtra

EAST ST. LOUIS — When he’s done serving his 56-month sentence for having sex with underage boys, former WPTV-Channel 5 weatherman Rob Lopicola could be facing much more time behind bars — up to 25 YEARS! And this time, he’ll be dealing with federal prosecutors who say that a telemarketing company he worked for in 2009 bilked thousands of unsuspecting timeshare owners out of $14.5 million! It’s yet another Gossip Extra exclusive: Lopicola was quietly indicted by a federal grand jury in East St. Louis, Illinois, in connection with the alleged scam. Lopicola, 44, was officially charged with felony conspiracy to commit wire fraud while serving his sex-crime time at the mid-level security Everglades Correctional Institution in Miami. The feds issued a warrant for Lopicola’s arrest but they could wait until he is released, on Christmas Day 2016, to have him appear in the Midwestern courthouse. What happened? According to the indictment obtained by Gossip Extra Lopicola, who was fired by WPTV in 2008 after his taste for young men boiled to the surface, worked at a telemarketing center in West Palm Beach. Lopicola allegedly called timeshare owners and falsely claimed to have found potential buyers for their properties. Lopicola then asked each owner for $1,000 to handle the sale. Federal investigators said Lopicola and the company he worked for, Premier Timeshare Solutions, pocketed the fees then told sellers that their sale didn’t go through. The feds claim Lopicola called owners without really securing a buyer. The company allegedly victimized 7,000 would-be sellers in the United States, Canada and The Bahamas for more than $14.5 million. PTS owner Jose Goyos already pleaded guilty to wire fraud and is awaiting sentencing.

OPINION

WPTV Placed Its Reputation Above Children’s Safety in Rob Lopicola Scandal!

WEST PALM BEACH — While WPTVChannel 5 talks a good game when it comes to the public’s safety, the shameful Rob Lopicola episode that ended Friday with his sentencing to 56 months in prison on charges related to his having sex with underage boys exposed WPTV’s extreme hypocrisy. It showed the station was in full CYA mode when Lopicola mysteriously left his job in 2006 — four years before he started putting the mental and physical health of at least two young men at risk. Prosecutors made it clear during their request for a 10-year sentence against Lopicola in court Friday that WPTV knew full well Lopicola had a dark side when he forecast the weather and hurricanes from its studios. Yet its general manager at the time decided to hide behind artificial rules governing employee privacy rather than warn the public about Lopicola. Who knows? Had WPTV been forthcoming about Lopicola’s strange hobbies in 2006, the two teenage boys who testified that Lopicola performed sexual acts on them when they were 15 and 17 would not be called “victims” by the justice system today. Gossip Extra says: WPTV owes the public, and the victims, an apology for refusing to come clean about Lopicola’s disappearance from the airwaves — and needs to change its attitude when it comes to covering news related to its own employees! Until Friday, no one except Lopicola and former WPTV manager Brian Lawlor knew that Lopicola was indeed fired by the station — for emailing photos of himself naked! Obviously, the dude who received soflagaynews //

Lopicola’s advances didn’t appreciate it as much as Lopicola thought he would, and ratted Lopicola out to his bosses. Gossip Extra‘s Jose Lambiet reported at the time that Lopicola left on his own after eight years to launch a career in personal training. Then the rumors started: Rob left after WPTV techs found porn on his work computer, one source said; Rob was forced out after the parents of an underage boy with whom Lopicola was involved complained to WPTV, another said; Rob showed up in the newsroom with “friends” who looked too young for him, yet another said. There’s a good reason why these rumors were never published: WPTV emphatically refused to reveal the truth, and continues to do so in its coverage of Lopicola today. (Friday’s newscasts failed to report the prosecutor’s shocking claim about WPTV!) We’ll submit that, when it comes to sex with children, public safety far outweighs anyone’s privacy. Make no mistake about it, however: By protecting an employee’s privacy, the corporation that owns WPTV really protected itself! Particularly galling is the fact that, had Lopicola been a public employee, his kinks would have exploded on the central square. It’s painfully obvious that WPTV honchos need to grow a pair as large as Lopicola’s — and put them to better use. Don’t hold your breath, though: Today’s twisted media world has been so emasculated by fear and greed that there are plenty of Lopicolas out there who remain protected by the deafening silence of their red-faced bosses. After all, the man who handled Lopicola’s firing eventually was made a senior vice president at the WPTV corporate headquarters in Cincinnati. Ya see? CYA pays! Changes in Broward Three-Year Comprehensive HIV Plan Sean McShee The Broward County HIV Planning Council develops the comprehensive HIV Care Plan for Broward County. This plan forms the basis for most public funding of HIV services in Broward County. In August, the chair of that council, Brad Gammell, agreed to be interviewed by SFGN about changes occurring in HIV policies in Broward. Over the next few years, HIV prevention and care services in Broward will be integrated into one coordinated system of care. Brad Gammell explained this change as follows: “We’ve been using a model for 15 or 20 years across the country and that model doesn’t fit today’s needs.” This integration is not just occurring in South Florida. According to Brad, it has already occurred in Chicago and Los Angeles. Brad stated “Things have really changed in a good way in the last four years. We have the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. We’ve never had a strategy before, a direction on the national level. All our work feeds upward into the national strategy. And part of that strategy we get rid of silos.” The National HIV/AIDS Strategy itself integrates prevention and care. In the past, different funding streams separated prevention and care, each having its own comprehensive plan. According to Brad, the two major federal HIV funding agencies (CDC and HRSA) now want a single comprehensive three-year plan for both HIV prevention and care. The Broward HIV Planning Council will be writing that comprehensive three-year plan. Brad stressed that this will not be simple, “What we’re doing is really hard, bringing the two groups, prevention and care, together: two different worlds that speak two different languages.” Brad described current thinking about HIV testing. “It’s no longer test to test. They have to test people to get positives. It’s not about numbers of people testing; it’s about the number of people testing positive.” This

follows the recommendation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy to intensify efforts to test where HIV/AIDS is most heavily concentrated. Several other factors also contribute to this merging of HIV prevention and care. The new bio-medical advances (PrEP, PEP, and Treatment as Prevention) thoroughly blur the line between prevention and treatment. The measurement tool, the Cascade of Care (see graphic) links prevention and care in six stages from initial infection to viral suppression. As it shows where people fail to move to the next stage, it clearly shows problem areas. This measurement tool has become a key way to understand both the epidemic and efforts to contain it. The next comprehensive three-year plan for HIV prevention and care will describe the state of the epidemic in Broward, identify problem areas, and identify success criteria for resolving those problem areas. It will have measures for success that are solid enough to show progress against HIV, and to defend HIV funding against “budget hawks.” Brad asserted that Ryan White Care groups throughout the county have produced solid enough data to win the unlikely support of people like Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK). This data will also be the basis of a large part of HIV funding in Broward for three years. The council’s meetings are open to the public and its documents, including the current comprehensive plan, are available on line. Major changes are now occurring in how people think about, understand, and deal with the epidemic. Brad summarized the position of the Planning Council, “Our nation is shaking up and we can be part of that national discussion and move on or we can stay here locally and not do a thing. We don’t have a choice “ For more info, please visit www.brhpc.org/ hiv-planning-council.

Homeless For a Day [Editor’s Note: Nicole Wiesenthal was SFGN’s intern for the summer and over Labor Day weekend participated in the sixth annual Will Write For Food program that brings in college students from all over the nation to write, edit, and design an issue of the

Being homeless on the streets made me feel demoralized, dehumanized, unwanted and alone. But during my four hours in the shelter, I had friends who watched out for me, people who asked and cared about my opinion and a community that welcomed me in and gave me a place to belong. Dressing Homeless I chose to be a fashionable homeless woman. I wore a tie as a belt, a flamingo pink tank top and a denim jacket with frills on the sleeves and collar (which earned me a lot of compliments). I also wore a Jagermeister hat and large shorts with actual pocket space. Watching TV I sat outside to watch a ‘60s cowboy movie on a large static-covered TV screen with a few other shelter mates. I struck up a conversation with a man from Boston, and then decided I needed to find some work. Getting a Shelter Job Jeremiah, a kind-hearted large man with crosses on his necklace, seemed to run the cleaning operations at the shelter. I put on gloves that were a little too tight, cleaned tables, helped mop the floor and did the laundry. It was tough work, but I was proud to earn my keep. My Own Bed While taking the trash out of rooms, I decided that if I were to stay homeless, I’d want my own bed. Many people had accessorized their beds with accents like stuffed animals, thick frilled curtains and hanging pieces of art. You don’t need to lose your sense of style when you become homeless. I liked all of the personalization. Wash Your Hands People constantly reminded me to wash my hands. “Washing your hands,” actually meant using hand sanitizer. Sanitize. Sanitize. Sanitize. Don’t get sick. The Mardi Gras Woman While waiting for the towels to dry, I met a woman who wore beads around her neck, one for every Mardi Gras she attended. She also worked as a flight attendant on a plane that Frank Sinatra’s mother was on. The (RECOVERING) Alcoholic The sleeping man in the hall is recovering from an alcohol addiction. “Go get treatment,” one would say. No place will take him in because of his medical conditions. the phone he has. When he was younger, he processed photos. He smokes (it helps with the addiction) and collects the ashes in a cola can. I have faith that he can recover. My Delicious Lunch I tore through pieces of salty, spiced chicken, a slice of white bread, a tough pastry and watery vegetables. I washed it all down with iced tea. The elderly man next to me slid his tray toward me and offered me his slice of bread. I shook my head, no. I get a lot more food than he does on a daily basis. Out on the Street I decided to take my homelessness on the road because not everyone has a shelter. I hate cars, people, loud noises and traffic. I found myself shying away from the sun and practically everything that moved. I got honked at, but ignored. I felt extremely different and a lot less confident. My Quest for a Restroom I had to pee, so I decided to go to the park in central Hollywood, the Arts Park. When I got there, I found the restroom had been closed for cleaning. I tried another one: locked. I decided to find a job. Finding a Job: Attempt One At the first restaurant, a young man in a black outfit ushered me to a bar stool. He motioned towards the owner. “Can we have an application for her to fill out?” The owner motioned back, and I was told they didn’t have openings and was escorted out the door. It was insulting, but I wasn’t surprised. I’m Told I’m Beautiful, Repeatedly A stranger told me I was beautiful multiple times and asked for my number and Facebook, any way for him to contact me. He said I have galaxy eyes. He also decided I needed a hobby and told me I should smoke weed. I thought that I wouldn’t get hit on when I was homeless—I was wrong. Finding a Job: Attempts Two, Three, Four and Five They’re not hiring. I need to bring in a resume. I should come back on Monday. I need to apply online. Owners and managers lurked at the entrances of stores watching me as I passed. I felt like it was impossible to find employment despite my youth; I got immediately rejected just because of how I looked and because I lacked resources.

Homeless Voice, a publication produced in Hollywood, Fla and given to the residents to sell on the streets to raise money. Nicole posed as a homeless person for her assignment and contributed to this year’s student run newspaper. http://wwff14.wordpress.com]

My Quest for a Restroom: Two The restroom at the park was open when I returned a half hour later. I got to pee and wash my hands. Washing the dirt off my hands felt extremely gratifying. If I can wash my hands, I can do anything! I also got to wash my face. Evaluating my Life in the Shade of the Trees I got to lie under the trees and rest my extremely blistered, black feet. If I didn’t have the shelter, I would want to live at the park. It has all of the amenities except food: a restroom, shade, comfy grass and bushes for protection. The Long Trek Back I had developed a limp from walking in cracked, wooden sandals that don’t fit my feet. I felt sunburnt and extremely hot. My tongue felt dry and sticky. Water I stepped into a local diner and asked for a cup of water to go. The woman at the counter told me to sit at a bar stool so I could get the water for free. At the bar area, I declined a menu and gulped down my water. Being homeless made everything seem expensive. Refreshed, I made my way back to the shelter. Folding Towels I folded towels when I got back to the shelter, and Jeramiah let me keep the change (63 cents) we didn’t use on the coin-operated laundry machines. I felt bad about taking the money, but happy to know that someone was looking out for me. The Reveal Finally, my day was over. I revealed to a few of the shelter people, who were the only people during my short time as a homeless person I had come to trust, that I had actually been an undercover journalist and thanked them for such a great experience. They thanked me for helping them and wished me luck. I’m glad to have been homeless. Readers React to ‘HeteroBurger’ Join the conversation by liking SFGN on Facebook SFGN Staff Last week SFGN ran a letter to the editor that was published in The Islander, a recently launched monthly newsletter, that blasted the City of Wilton Manors for allowing the sexualization of Wilton Drive by allowing businesses such as “Rock Hard,” “Gaysha,”

and “Gay Mart” to exist. This “concerned resident” went on to ask the question what if a restaurant named “Hetero-burger” opened up in Wilton Manors? Here’s what you had to say:

Michael Gluckman: I am a Gay male, and I agree with the writer of thee letter. Just because a business is geared to a gay clientele does not mean the business name and public display needs to be offensive or overtly homosexual in nature. D-ego Gomez: Why is rock hard/ Gaymart offensive? Michael Gluckman: Well, there is the subtle word play with “Rock Hard”, causing most people to think “erection”. As far as “Gaymart” goes, I know it was a take-off from “K-Mart”, but why the need to insert sexuality in a store’s name? They will sell to heterosexuals. Why the need to flaunt sexuality in a store name? Again, That is why the letter writer jokingly suggested “Heteroburger”. I imagine ‘Heteroburger’ sounds ridiculous to most people- so why is ‘Gaymart’ not ridiculous? Bill Cox: The subtle word play with “Rock Hard” causes most people to think “erection”? Only people obsessed with sex. How about a gym called Rock Hard... could mean rock hard abs or rock hard arms... and yes, rock hard ass. How about a guitar store called Rock Hard? How many children do you know who would see “rock hard” and think of an erection? And what have they already seen to cause them to make that connection? John Fama: He’d rather turn this back into the roach infested prostitute ridden neighborhood that it was before the gays took over. Jack Finley: Uh this is America folks. As long as it’s legal, there should not be “taste police.” Go live in Russia if you want conformity. Michael Gluckman: Almost every city/town has a Board of Commissioners. or some type of planning

board, which in fact DOES act as a ‘taste police.’ They have to approve all new architecture and signage. Without such overseeing, most cities would end up looking like Time Square in the 1970s. Tacky and vulgar with no cohesiveness. Most business owners want their signs to be the biggest, brightest and most noticeable. Imagine what that would create if the City Council did not approve or deny signage and architecture.

been forced out of two homes that I loved because the neighborhood changed in a way I no longer felt comfortable with - or safe for that matter. But when this kind of change happens you have two choices. Adapt and learn to accept it or move. I don’t mean to be insensitive when I say that. It’s just reality. Getting yourself worked up over petty things like a clever business name accomplishes nothing but making yourself miserable.

Rj Petrucci Michael: you are the one coming off as VERY tacky.

Towne Clothiers: Funny thing is two of the named businesses are straight owned. Also if we look at Fort Lauderdale many businesses have names with double meanings. I really don’t feel it is limited to Wilton Manors or the gay community

Jessica Shein: I live in Wilton Manors along with my husband and two-year-old son. We love this town. Beautiful neighborhood, great shops, amazing food and the coolest people. I’m proud to call Wilton Manors my home. Don Roofener: People are in business to make money. If a significant number of people in a community find the name of a business offensive they’re free to not patronize the business. Whether it’s Gaysha or heteroburger it’s the same thing. If you don’t like it don’t go there. The marketplace will weed out offensive businesses. If you’re that uptight about the names of the businesses where you live it might really be time to consider moving. Bill Cox: Yeah, damn homos are always so obsessed with sex. Why can’t they stick to family friendly names like Hooters? If she was complaining about a business named Hard C*ck Cafe, I might be more sympathetic. But Gaymart and Gaysha? If she is concerned about her children seeing a sign for Gaymart I suspect her problem isn’t with clever puns, but with gay people taking over her neighborhood. And I do sympathize with her on that point. It isn’t pleasant when something you love and are comfortable with changes; like Greenwich Village or the Castro. I have soflagaynews //

Gilbert Wyatt: He doesn’t talk about the property values before the Gays moved in. Wilton Manors was becoming a slum thanks to those like this heterosexual. Larry Scott: Wilton Manors is the gayest city on earth and I’m proud to call it my home. The gay people who live and work in my city saved it from the rundown dump it was 20 years ago and through hard work and massive investment it has become vibrant and beautiful place it is today. There is a reason the property values in WilMa are higher than the adjacent areas in Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park. It is more desirable because of the gay culture. Anyone who has an issue with it being so much a gay city who celebrates its residents can go peddle their prudish papers elsewhere. Their approval is not needed. Vanessa Cruz: Someone tell me why the word “gay” in the name/title of something makes it offensive or indecent? The author of that letter needs to take several seats... preferably at a location far, far away from WM.

The Rise of the Truvada Whores Truvada wars escalate with AHF’s new anti-PrEP campaign

Jason Parsley

I

t was 1996. And Michael Lucas had a boyfriend. All was well. Until the boyfriend tested positive for HIV. “It was fearful. So unpleasant,” Lucas, 42, recalled. “He accused me of giving it to him and we went to get tested and I was negative. Seeing him so desperate, I was scared for him.” Lucas no longer fears getting the virus because he now takes Truvada and believes that’s enough to protect him from a disease that has taken the lives of so many gay men. Today he is a famed gay porn director and has become an outspoken advocate for Truvada, which is being touted by many as a way to stop the HIV epidemic.

What is Truvada?

I know that if every gay man is taking “ PrEP there will be no HIV virus. It will be the end of HIV. For the first time in my life... I am no longer afraid to get tested.”

Michael Lucas, gay porn director 10

soflagaynews //

Truvada is a mainstream HIV medicine that is now being used to prevent HIV in what’s called pre-exposure prophylaxis, more commonly known as PrEP. Doctors in the U.S. have used pre-exposure prophylaxis for decades to prevent other diseases such as malaria in American’s traveling abroad. The drug has been around for about a decade and is produced by California-based Gilead Sciences. It’s one of the key drugs used (in combination with others) in the basic treatment for HIV. The Food and Drug Administration approved Truvada for PrEP on July 16, 2012. In May of this year the U.S. Public Health Service (the agency in charge of the Centers for Disease Control) released the first comprehensive clinical practice guidelines for PrEP recommending pre-exposure prophylaxis with Truvada to be given to high infection risk populations. “This is another great tool against HIV,” said Jack Mackenroth, a celebrity HIV activist. “We have a drug that’s proven to prevent HIV transmission so why isn’t everyone taking it?” Mackenroth has been taking Truvada for 7 years — for treatment of his HIV, not prevention. Some have argued that the long-term side effects of Truvada are unknown, another reason to not take the drug. Mackenroth said: “I haven’t had any side effects. You know what does have side effects though? HIV.”

PrEP Vs. Condoms

Controversy over PrEP, and its effectiveness, continues to persist with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation being the drug’s most outspoken opponent. SouthFloridaGayNews

AHF recently doubled down on their anti-PrEP efforts releasing a print ad campaign called “PrEP Facts” claiming “there is a major debate going on about the efficacy of the drug Truvada to prevent HIV.” The rest of the ad disputes Truvada’s effectiveness as a preventative measure. The ad mostly attacks the adherence part of the clinical trials saying “low adherence means low effectiveness in preventing HIV.” As for Truvada’s actual effectiveness the CDC states that in terms of gay and bisexual men: “those who were given PrEP were 44 percent less likely overall to get HIV than those who were given a placebo. Among the men with detectable levels of medicine in their blood (meaning they had taken the pill consistently), PrEP reduced the risk of infection by as much as 92 percent.” AHF though continues to promote condom use as the primary way to stop new HIV infections. They recently caused a furor in Fort Lauderale with a racy billboard showing an unrolled condom with the words “Why Worry,” and pointing to their website UseACondom.com. No one disputes that low adherence to Truvada dramatically decreases its effectiveness though. However, some supporters of PrEP say that AHF should focus their efforts on promoting adherence, rather than campaigning against the drug altogether. “The irony of AHF’s promotion of condoms cannot be ignored in this debate either. We know that condom use, when used every single time is about 70 percent in anal sex, but we also know only 1 in 6 MSM [Men who have sex with men] are using condoms 100 percent of the time,” said Todd Heywood, a veteran journalist who reports on HIV policy issues for many publications. “That failure to achieve 100 percent adherence to condom use means there a zero sum gain when it comes to prevention — basically a 50/50 roll of the dice. So, explain to me why condom adherence issues have not led AHF to declare war on condoms only messaging?” In Heywood’s statement above he’s referring to a study released by the CDC in 2013 that found condoms only stop seven out of ten HIV transmissions via anal sex – the same efficacy found by a 1989 study. That means condoms were only effective 70 percent in men who claimed they used condoms 100 percent of the time. Furthermore the study found long-term 100 percent condom use is a minority behavior. Only one-in-six gay men actually managed to maintain it over the three to four year time frame of the analysis. “If something comes along that’s better than condoms, I’m all for it, but Truvada is not that,” said Michael Weinstein, president of the AHF, in an interview with the Associated Press. “Let’s be honest: It’s a party drug.”

his chart T was created in response to AHF’s antiPrEP print campaign, which can be found on page 20.

Supporters of PrEP believe that Weinstein is trying to shame people into not using the drug. “I do, however, see a disturbing trend in the Truvada Wars,” Heywood said. “The defeatist rhetoric and sex shaming are appalling. But the surrender to barriers simply does not comport with the history of fighting this epidemic. The fight against HIV has always been about dismantling barriers.” Heywood does agree with AHF that adherence is a problem but is one of the people who believe the organization should be tackling the problem rather than giving up and staging an all war again the drug. “I concur that there should be some level of concern about adherence rates for PrEP,” Heywood said. “I think we should be asking how do we improve adherence and access, rather than allowing misguiding, misinformation campaigns to guide the conversation.” Heywood isn’t the only HIV activist that is furious over the AHF campaign. “Their campaign does not contain facts. They have taken the worst study results from the earliest trials and presented them as facts. Early trials included, for instance, those

who did not choose to take the drug as part of the percentage of those for whom the drug was ineffective,” said Mark S. King, an HIV activist and author of the popular HIV blog, My Fabulous Disease. “To present this data as fact isn’t just dishonest; it’s a disgrace to our community and to those who care about HIV prevention. While thoughtful people are welcome to discuss the relative value of using a medication to prevent HIV infection, AHF is using deception and misinformation.”

The Rise of the Truvada Whores

In 2012 David Duran, a popular columnist, who routinely covers LGBT and HIV issues, coined the term “Truvada Whore” to describe gay men who wanted to take the drug to prevent HIV. He was skeptical it was going to work and believed it may create a new generation of sluts and encourage unsafe behavior. His Truvada Whore comment sparked a contentious debate over whether the drug would encourage unsafe behavior. On the flip side his comments also launched a social media movement #TruvadaWhore that seeks to embrace the name rather than run from it. Adam Zeboski, 26, launched his own Truvada Whore campaign in February as a way to reclaim phrase. So far he’s sold 450 t-shirts with the Truvada Whore branding. “I saw the Truvada Whore label start to gain popularity in the social media world and then we started seeing it pop up on hook up apps like Grindr and Scruff. Some people though used the term in a derogatory way towards people who use PrEP,” he said.

“I wanted to take that term and transform it, and reclaim it, like the gay community has done with queer and dyke. Now people are using it as a term of endearment.” Zeboski, who lives in San Francisco, said he’s proud to be a “Truvada Whore.” He’s been taking the drug sine November of 2012. “I haven’t had any side effects,” he said. And as for adherence he’s found a way to remember to take it every day. “I have an alarm that goes off every day at 9 a.m. I’ve only missed one or two doses my entire time.” “I think AHF has become the Tea Party of HIV prevention,” he said. “It really brings down reputation of AHF. They have a lot of money and lawyers and can make things happen with those resources. Regular nonprofits don’t have the funding to combat these false advertisements.” The campaign against PrEP has inspired Zeboski, and others, to become advocates for Truvada. Zeboski hopes to use the Truvada Whore movement to become an educational advocate for PrEP. Another self-proclaimed Truvada Whore is Wilton Manors resident and pharmacist Robert Shore, 50. “I am a proud Truvada Whore,” Shore said. “I’m going to take that term and use it positively. It keeps me safe. I even made a temporary tattoo for myself to wear. I got good feedback. And it led to conversations.” For Shore it’s become his personal mission to educate anyone who will listen about the benefits of using Truvada. Like Zeboski he hasn’t suffered from any ongoing side effects — except one. “I guess having stress relief is a side effect,” he said. “That’s a positive effect.” Michael Lucas has also become a fierce

advocate for Truvada speaking out as much as he can and pursuing opportunities to be interviewed. “I do this because I care about the community and I want other people to use PrEP as well. Because I know that if every gay man is taking PrEP there will be no HIV virus. It will be the end of HIV,” he said. “It’s been incredible and liberating for me. For the first time in my life, in the last two years, I am no longer afraid to get tested,” When you are on Truvada you have to be tested so I always know my status and I am never worried anymore.” Lucas said he knows a couple of guys that have tested positive for HIV in the last year who had never heard of PrEP. “They had no idea. Today a gay man that has no idea about PrEP is scandalous,” he said. “It’s is absolutely preposterous.” And Lucas is making it his mission to make sure that every gay man knows what PrEP is. As for David Duran even he has since come around, changing his opinion on the matter writing in an article in March of this year: “I’m not ashamed to say that I might have come off a bit conservative in my thoughts regarding how PrEP is used…but at this point, I am a supporter of anything that will help eliminate future infections.”

The ‘Old’ Pill Faced Similar Criticism

Another preventative medication that still causes controversy more than 50 years after FDA approval is the common birth control pill, simply known as ‘The Pill.’ Supporters of PrEP link their cause and fight to that of the rise of the birth control

a drug that’s proven to prevent HIV transmission “Wesohave why isn’t everyone taking it?”

pill. And just like PrEP there were many opponents to the pill. One such case in 1967 included African-American activists charging Planned Parenthood with committing genocide when they started distributing the pill in poor, minority neighborhoods. A year later in 1968 Pope Paul VI officially declared his opposition to the pill despite his own commission’s recommendation that that these contraceptives were not “intrinsically evil and that Catholic couples should be allowed to decide for themselves about the methods to be employed.” And just like today where some say PrEP will turn all gay men into whores, many believed that the pill would do the same to women. Some even blamed the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s on the pill. What really links the two issues together though is adherence, which is key to the effectiveness of the birth control pill. Opponents question whether gay men can take a pill everyday. “How come we believe women can prevent pregnancy by taking a birth control pill, but somehow gay men would be too incompetent to be able to take a pill as well?” Shore said. The stakes are arguably a lot higher when it comes to an HIV infection versus a pregnancy. “Having HIV is a lifelong infection,” Shore noted. “I want to do everything I can to prevent that state of health.” Putting PrEP Into Action A few months ago Shore participated in a panel discussion on PrEP at the Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors. It was then he realized there needed to be something more, something ongoing. And so he founded a PrEP discussion group that has so far met a few times with 15 people attending the first one. For now there is no regularly scheduled meeting days or times. Shore said he once strictly adhered to using condoms, but at some point he

12

noticed his sexual behavior changed, and that’s what prompted him to seek out another form of protection. Tim Haymon, 50, of Oakland Park is a co-founder of the above-mentioned PrEP group. Ever since he learned of PrEP he’s also become a vocal advocate. “I do have to explain what PrEP is to a lot of people and that’s why I wanted to be interviewed,” he said. “So many people in South Florida that says no I never heard of that. It’s just shocking to me that there’s such a large percentage of gay people here yet so little information out there.” Haymon admitted Truvada has changed his sexual behavior — he isn’t as concerned with using a condom as he once was. As for adherence that hasn’t been an issue. “It may just be my age, but I have other pills I have to take on a daily basis that I’ve been taking for years. I never forget to do it,” he said. “I have a routine and I just added this my routine.” Shore added: “I’ve maybe missed one dose.” As for the discussion group Haymon said, “we’re still not clear what our goals are. I see it as a great companion to the town hall meetings that they’re having at the Pride Center.” The Pride Center is holding its second town hall meeting on PrEP on Monday, October 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The first one focused on the research into PrEP while this one’s title is “Putting PrEP into Action.” And it will answer questions like “what are people’s experience locally with PrEP,” “who is prescribing it,” “how do I decide if I should take it,” and “how do I pay for it.” Shore goes on to insist he isn’t against condoms. Most importantly this is about education. “I advocate information. You need to make it your own decisions,” he said. “I’m happy to use a condom — let’s have fun. But that’s for your protection though not mine.” soflagaynews //

The new Federal guidelines for PrEP 1. Provide clear criteria for determinin a person’s HIV risk and indications for PrEP use. 2. Require that patients receive HIV testing to confirm negative status before starting PrEP. 3. Underscore importance of counseling about adherence and HIV risk reduction, including encouraging condom use for additional protection. 4. Recommend regular monitoring of HIV infection status, side effects, adherence, and sexual or injection risk behaviors. 5. Include a providers’ supplement Adobe PDF file with additional materials and tools for use when prescribing PrEP. The new federal guidelines recommend that PrEP be considered for people who are HIV-negative and at substantial risk for HIV.

For sexual transmission, this includes anyone who is in an ongoing relationship with an HIV-positive partner. It also includes anyone who:

1. Is not in a mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who recently tested HIV-negative 2. is a gay or bisexual man who has had anal sex without a condom or been diagnosed with an STD in the past 6 months; or heterosexual man or woman who does not regularly use condoms during sex with partners of unknown HIV status who are at substantial risk of HIV infection (e.g., people who inject drugs or have bisexual male partners).

Oakland Park Soup Kitchen Fights for Life

Sidelines steps up to the plate while gay commissioners accused of turning back on homeless Christiana Lilly

A soup kitchen that serves hundreds of people every day is fighting to stay open in Oakland Park. With a new zoning ordinance in place, All Saints Catholic Mission on Powerline Road would be forced out by the summer of 2018. “The city hasn’t had a real good relationship with us,” said Father Bob Caudill, who has run the soup kitchen for more than 20 years. “As years went on, it’s just gotten worse.” At the July 2 commission meeting, supporters of the soup kitchen came forward, including the homeless who use the services of the church to get by. Others also came forward in favor of the proposal, wanting to see improvements in the neighborhood and mentioned that the homeless population was a blight to the area. “Everybody talks about the good work – nobody wants it next to them,” said Grace McDonald, a church volunteer. Cool Cat Tattoos, which would also have to be forced out of the area, asked to be grandfathered in. Caudill said that everyone from young

children to the elderly utilize the soup kitchen, and without it, the neighborhood will become even worse. Adults in rehab also use the soup kitchen. With blankets always in his car, the local homeless know to flag “Father Bob,” as he’s affectionately called, down if they need anything. Also, while neighboring businesses have complained of the unsavory company the church brings in, there are local sponsors that are in favor of it. Cheesecake Factory, Chipotle, KFC, Longhorn Steakhouse, and Outback Steakhouse are just some of the area restaurants that donate food regularly to the church. The father proposed to the city to sell the church property and have a warehouse in a less residential area, but the idea was turned down. For years, Caudill said, the city has been trying to find ways to shut them down. However, this is probably the biggest threat the church has seen. “My lawyer says a lot of times people do this because they think you won’t fight them, because it costs money,” Caudill said. “It’s almost a mixed blessing. Every time that they

attack us, we get more funding and more people helping and lawyers asking to take the case and all this.” They hosted a fundraiser on Sept. 11 for lawyer fees and are hosting two more: a Pampered Chef fundraiser at the Kiwanis Club on Sept. 27 from 3 to 6 p.m., and Sidelines bar is hosting a casino night on Nov.7 at 7 p.m. The zoning ordinance was passed unanimously, which Caudill said felt like a “stab in the back.” He specially called out Mayor Shari McCartney and Commissioner John Adornato, who are both openly gay, for not being more in support of their plight. “I’m really surprised at them, knowing how people have treated gay people in the past and they know what it’s like to be prejudiced against. They would understand how terrible it is to be treated with disrespect and secondclass citizenship,” Caudill said. All Saints Catholic Mission is a liberal parish, welcoming gay and divorced Catholics. They are also open to married priests and female priests. For more information about the fight for the soup kitchen, visit AllSaintsMission.org.

Oakland Park Commissioners FACT: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) states that the nation’s homeless veterans are predominantly male, with roughly 8% being female. The majority are single; live in urban areas; and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States which equates to about 12% of the adult population. Roughly 40% of all homeless veterans are African American or Hispanic, despite only accounting for 10.4% and 3.4% of the U.S. veteran population, respectively. Homelessness is not just a problem among middleage and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job. Homeless veterans are younger on average than the total veteran population. Approximately 9% are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 41% are between the ages of 31 and 50. Conversely, only 5% of all veterans are between the ages of 18 and 30, and less than 23% are between 31 and 50. FACT: 20% of homeless youth are LGBT. In comparison, the general youth population is only 10% LGBT.

column publisher’s editorial

Southern Comfort Conference Norm Kent

norm.kent@sfgn.com

The Southern Comfort Conference is a major transgender conference that has taken place annually since 1991. It features seminars, events, speeches by prominent people in the LGBT community, and numerous vendors catering to transgender and transsexual people. Wikipedia references the event as the largest and pre-eminent such conference in the United States. At the Riverside Hotel on Monday morning, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention Visitors Bureau announced that this prestigious event is coming to Fort Lauderdale next year. Moving from Atlanta after 24 years, the transition is attributable to the CVB’s managing director, Richard Gray, who commissioned a study on the economic impact and value of transgender tourism. From an editorial standpoint, the initiative lends further stature to South Florida as a progressive and inclusive community, legions apart from the perception most people have of Florida itself. After all, we are a state still fighting samesex marriage, it’s charge led by the state’s attorney general, Pam Bondi. Even Fort Lauderdale’s own mayor, Jack Seiler, opposes us. Nevertheless, the SCC has cultivated a reputation as a safe place for the LGBT transgender community. It attracts people from all over the United States, offering the opportunity for social interactions, promoting health exams, and spiriting in new levels of understanding. The Community Marketing Initiative, offering insights into the LGBT community, claims that the CVB should be lauded for its pioneering efforts, which will yield economic benefits to all of South Florida. More than just the dollars, we should be thinking about

the dignity a conference likes this offers the transgender community. It opens doors and breaks down walls. Even within the gay community, there can still be a condescending attitude towards the T’s in LGBT. And that is unacceptable, with a capital ‘U.’ Earlier this year, Time magazine broke new ground by publishing a cover story on actress Laverne Cox and ‘the Transgender Tipping Point.’ Her role in the Netflix series ‘Orange is the New Black’ has been compelling. This past week, with the release of ‘Lady Valor,’ CNN lifted eyebrows with the stunning and spectacular story of Christen Beck, once soldier Chris Beck, a Navy seal, a father, and family man. We are beginning to realize gender is not a matter of choice. Young queer people are moving away from using only sexual orientation labels to describe themselves. Instead they use language like gender fluid or genderqueer to define themselves and also their sexual orientation. As the Community Marketing Initiative notes, ‘Don’t box me in!’ is the resounding mantra from younger generations. These are kids who have grown up with greater acceptance surrounding diverse forms of expression and sexualities. Now it’s

time for the grown ups to grow up. We come together as a society not to restrict the rights of any but to secure the rights of all. We are all playing on the same team. Transparency and visibility is simply just a way of saying ‘this is who I am.’ Be who you are. The circle expands, the rubber band stretches, and we should all make room for each other. Let’s congratulate the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention Visitors Bureau for doing just that.

First Do No Harm Rebecca Juro

rjuroshow@gmail.com

It’s no secret that the trans community has a lot of issues, and I’m not just referring to those that involve access, inclusion, and respect. I’m also talking about mental illness and emotional instability. Many in the trans community suffer from a variety of these conditions, and it’s often a source of conflict and drama among us. Now and then, these conflicts spill over into the public sphere and we’re forced to confront them as a community. As we do so, we also must address the impact of the damage done and assess where the responsibility lies, who should be held accountable and for what. That’s not as easy a task as some might think. If someone is truly mentally ill, for example, and their behavior is a direct result of that mental illness, can they be held responsible for it? In many cases our laws say such behavior isn’t criminal, but there are also provisions in the law which allow the state to take steps to isolate those with mental illness from the rest of society to prevent them from inflicting harm on themselves or others. In the offline world, these kinds of situations are often dealt with by local police and courts. When such behavior occurs online, though, what should we be doing to keep our community’s most at-risk safe? Where is the line between garden-variety trolling and a deliberate attempt to cause harm? And what about the damage done to others as a result of that mental illness? Who takes responsibility for that? When we come into conflict in online spaces, we can’t rely on the usual offline methods of dealing with personal harassment. “Well, maybe you shouldn’t be spending so much time online,” we’re told so often, or “The Internet is such a cesspool of trolls, why do you even bother?” For me, and I’d expect for many of us, the answer is easy: Because that’s where our people are. Online is where the trans community exists

at its most vibrant, diverse, and interactive. It’s where a collection of otherwise isolated and persecuted trans individuals come together to form a community of common cause and interest. For a lot of us, and in a lot of ways, the Internet is where we live. In most cases, we can’t depend on the cops or some other legal authority to keep us safe online. Even if the threat is taken seriously, what’s a local police department going to be able to do about an attacker who’s physically thousands of miles away and attacks the mind rather than the body? No, this is a problem that we’re going to have to solve for ourselves. Trans people take care of our own. We always do, because we always have. When one of our own is in trouble, we step up to help because it’s what we do. It’s who we are as a community. It’s who we are as human beings. We’re a community of acceptance and inclusion, but we can’t afford to put the mental health and safety of our most vulnerable at risk in pursuit of those values. Trans people who seek to harm others in our community, regardless of whether they’re doing so in a rational state of mind of not, must be called to account for their behavior by the community, and affirmative steps must be taken to prevent and minimize the harm they do to the rest of us. If we are to truly live our values and our dreams, we must do this, and we must do it now. Safety first. opinion for becker or worse Arguments Against Gay Marriage Are Laughable at Best My time in the courtroom of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals John Becker Last month I had the privilege of traveling to Chicago to hear oral arguments at the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in the federal cases challenging marriage discrimination in Indiana and my home state of Wisconsin. It was my first time inside a federal courtroom, and as most readers will probably know, what transpired that day was nothing short of remarkable: a three-judge panel led by Judge Richard Posner, a Reagan appointee, utterly shredded the anti-gay arguments put forth by attorneys from both states. It was perhaps marriage equality’s best day in court to date (other than DOMA Decision Day in 2013, of course). Indiana’s argument, in a nutshell, was that the state needs to regulate marriage – and exclude same-sex couples from it – because marriage is designed to “nudge” straight couples into staying together in the case of unintended pregnancy. Yes, you read that right: after months of preparation and thousands of taxpayer dollars spent, the best defense Indiana’s lawyers could come up with was that of heterosexual irresponsibility – that “with opposite-sex couples, there is very little thought given during the sexual act sometimes to whether babies may be a consequence.” Unsurprisingly, Posner was having none

of it. He slammed Indiana’s argument as “ridiculous” and “absurd,” noting that same-sex couples in states like Indiana and Wisconsin are already raising children, and that those children are demonstrably harmed by the fact that their parents can’t get legally married. “What’s on the other side of this scale outweighing these costs?” he asked. “Is there any empirical basis for anything you’ve said?” The state was unable to provide a real answer. Wisconsin’s defense of its marriage discrimination amendment, argued by Assistant Attorney General Timothy Samuelson, was equally pathetic. That state claimed that marriage equality might “devalue the institution of marriage and make fewer people likely to enter into it.” Posner called shenanigans, asking Samuelson exactly how the state thought that would happen. The lawyer responded that he hadn’t expected that question, so he’d have to brief Posner about it later because he wasn’t prepared to argue it now. “How can you brief it when you don’t know anything about it?” Posner replied. Translation: don’t waste your time. But for me, the highlight of the morning was when Samuelson tried to argue that Wisconsin’s marriage discrimination

amendment should be preserved for the sake of tradition. Posner nearly laughed him out of court, calling the state’s claim “feeble” and asking whether it had anything better. When Samuelson replied that the tradition of excluding same-sex couples from marriage was based on “experience,” the judge corrected him: “It’s based on hate, isn’t it? …You don’t think there’s a history of rather savage discrimination against homosexuals in the United States and the rest of the world?” In the court’s unanimous opinion – released a mere nine days later – Posner came back to that point, writing that laws banning gay and lesbian couples from marriage “suggests animus.” He’s right, of course: after literally decades of trying, opponents of marriage equality have never been able to come up with documented proof – supported by hard data and credible research – that same-sex marriage harms… well… anyone. When they’re forced to defend their beliefs in open court, the curtain is pulled back and those views are exposed for exactly what they are: hateful. When you strip all their hyper inflated, doom-and-gloom hysteria away, hatred is all our opponents have left. But you don’t have to take my word for

soflagaynews //

it – or even Judge Posner’s, for that matter – just look at the shift within the antiequality movement. As more and more Americans embrace LGBT rights and reject our opponents’ toxic homophobia here at home, groups like the paradoxically-named National Organization for Marriage are shifting their focus and exporting their hatred abroad. In doing so, they’re getting into bed with some of the nastiest and vilest bigots in the world – people like Scott Lively, the American evangelist who stoked the fires of homophobia in Uganda (leading to the passage of that country’s infamous “jail the gays” law); and Yelena Mizulina, the co-author of Russia’s draconian ban on so-called “gay propaganda.” And they’re going far beyond marriage: an international anti-gay conference held in Moscow last week and attended by NOM and other U.S.-based anti-gay groups called for the passage of more Russia-style “gay propaganda” bans all around the world, as well as additional “scientific studies” into the (non-existent) harms of same-sex parenting. This is what hatred looks like, folks. It may be all that our opponents have left, but it doesn’t mean they’re going to give up the fight anytime soon. And as long as they continue fighting, we must keep fighting back.

Why on Earth am I Marching for Climate? Peterson Toscano

After a ridiculously long stint trying to de-gay myself through gay conversion therapy, I finally came out. Then, happily settled with a hunky smart stud, I got smacked in the face with a hot, nasty blast of global warming. No, don’t blame “the gays.” It’s the immoral, flamboyant fossil fuel lifestyle that got us into this climate mess. Part of me wants to wash my hands of climate change and enjoy a little marriage equality while we all go to hell in a flaming hand basket. But something sassy stirs inside of me and our ancestors compel me to get off Facebook and do something. On September 21, I’ll be at the historic Peoples Climate March in NYC. I hate crowds, even at Pride parades with pretty floats and glistening bodies. Marching with a bunch of environmentalists wearing socks and sandals is not my idea of a Sunday stroll in Manhattan. But it turns out loads of LGBT people like me have signed up. It may seem cruel or shallow, but I’m not terribly moved by the plight of a stranded polar bear on a distant ice flow; it’s the recent floods in Brazil threatening coffee production and the extreme rates of asthma in Harlem that alarm me. While I appreciate nature, I feel far more at home at the Metropolitan Museum of Art than frolicking in the Adirondacks. I also don’t have any offspring to worry about. I’m not a respectable environmentalist. Still I’ll march on September 21st, a speck of lavender in a sea of green. Faced with global warming, I find myself asking, “What Would Walt Whitman Do?” Old gay Walt Whitman faced the horrors of Civil War by volunteering as an army hospital nurse, reading to soldiers, bringing small gifts, writing letters for them, and holding them as they died in his arms. In the midst of his generation’s greatest crisis, Whitman, a groundbreaking

poet, left the comfort of his study to become father, mother, and brother to our nation’s wounded young men. Whitman experienced an Apocalypse, the Greek word for the revelation that happens when a curtain is pulled back and one sees what’s been hidden. Two years ago, my husband, Glen Retief, and I had our own apocalypse about global warming. The reality of climate change shook us to the core, and we saw the threat to all we held dear — art, coffee, and the best parts of civilization. Suddenly Glen’s work as a writer and mine as a performance artist seemed irrelevant next to a challenge greater than world war or plague. We are developing a variety of responses to global warming including lobbying for a tax on greenhouse gases. We’ll also march, hand in sweaty hand, on September 21. With projected threats to food security and water rights, and sea level rises that will displace multitudes, we’ve come to see global warming as a human rights issue, an environmental justice issue, and one that affects millions of LGBT people worldwide. Facebook activism and online petitions are not gonna cut it. That’s like redesigning the deck chairs on the Titanic. I need to show up. Our ancestors comfort me and challenge me to act: Sylvia Rivera at the Stonewall Riots, HIV/ AIDS activist Peter Stanley of ACT UP, and Black gay pacifist Bayard Rustin demanding justice in racist and homophobic America. For years I was frightened of my own queer shadow, but I recognize I come from good stock: LGBTQ people who’ve passionately and doggedly made the world a better place. They’ve done their work. Now it is my turn. Peterson Toscano is a quirky, queer Quaker performance artist and scholar who playfully explores the serious worlds of gender, religion, and global warming. He will march on September 21st with the Queers For The Climate. Follow his work at www.petersontoscano.com.

Lessons From a Straight Teen to an Ignorant World Nicole Wiesenthal

People always ask me how I got involved in the LGBT plus community; I’m not gay or lesbian or transgender. I’m mostly straight, “mostly” because I don’t believe myself to be completely, 100 percent straight. I’m 19 years old, I have a boyfriend and I spend most of my free time on Netflix or Facebook. So how is it that someone like me ended up as editor for an LGBT plus newspaper? To understand that we’ll have to travel back a couple years into my past. To a time when I didn’t know what being gay was — just as I didn’t know that there were people out there who actually didn’t believe in God. I mean, what else could there possibly be out there besides God? I couldn’t fathom it. I was asked a strange question in camp during my middle school years that I have not forgotten to this day. “Are you gay or straight?” It was on a bus on the way to an activity; rap music blared in the background. My friend sat next to me. The popular girl had turned over in her seat and was staring at us waiting for an answer. I gaped. I could not for the life of me understand what she was asking; I definitely did not understand what being straight, like a line, had to do with my friend or myself. I remember through my confusion, the quickness with which my friend answered. “I’m straight,” my friend said. “Me too,” I chortled. I quickly brushed off the incidence, deciding it was better to be ignorant than seem like a fool. In middle school, I had two best friends, a girl named Ronny (short for Veronica) and a girl named Mona (short for Simona). Mona was noticeably not like the other girls; she wore boys’

30

// 9.17.2014 // SFGN.com //

clothes, cut her hair short and hated all things girly. Now, if I had known what being transgender was back then, my life and his life would have been made a lot easier. I didn’t understand why she got repulsed when she saw my bra or why she always refused a sleepover at my place. I remember at one point she brought up a discussion about what her name would be if she were a boy; she decided Simon. I went with the conversation and came up with a boy name for myself — Nicholas, obviously. I didn’t think twice about the importance of it. It had never ever occurred to me that someone born with female genitalia could actually be a boy. In our first year of high school, she revealed to me that she was always depressed, even when she was with me, her so-called “best friend.” I didn’t understand it was because she was actually a boy trapped in a girl’s body. I also didn’t realize how wrong it was to leave someone who confided in me that they were chronically depressed. Why would I? I had enough problems on my own as a diagnosed insomniac dealing with my first year of high school, and my fourteen-year-old self did not have the time to figure out why she was acting that way. I dumped her. I mean, how could someone not be happy around their friends? Later that year she began to use the name “Simon.” I felt cheated on, like my entire life had been a lie. Why hadn’t he told me? I let my pride and anger get the best of me. I still refused to talk to him and avoided him. During the summer before tenth grade, I went soflagaynews //

to my first Pride Parade, completely by accident. My family was in San Francisco for a hiking trip in Yosemite and ended up staying in San Fran during the time of the Pride Parade. My mom, being LGBT-accepting (though, she still thinks most gay guys wear polos and tight pants and tote toy dogs around with them), thought it would be fun to check out. Thus I experienced an amazing, eye-opening event. The colors and just the infectious attitude bedazzled and changed me forever. I got caught up in everything and wore my long rainbow socks and tie-dye shirt proudly. I waved my rainbow flag and felt like I belonged, despite my lack of “gayness.” The other people didn’t seem to care what I was. It was a judgment-free zone, and I felt a sense of belonging and validation, that it was OK to be whatever I wanted whether it be straight or lesbian, boy or girl. That year, I joined my high school’s GayStraight Alliance. During my high school years, a few of my friends came out to me, and I embraced them and their uniqueness with open arms. I met more LGBT plus people, and though I did not wear a label like theirs, I tried to understand what it was like to be them, and I became more accepting and understanding and open. Many of us carry around our scars, invisible to the naked eye. It’s especially difficult if we are LGBT plus. We’ve lost friends due to their fear or misunderstanding. We’ve been hurt by family members. And tormented ourselves out of confusion and hate because of what we believed we were and what society kept secret. We believed what other people told us — whether

SouthFloridaGayNews

it was that we were a boy when we knew that we identified with our sister’s Barbie dolls — or that we would go to Hell if we decided to date the person we loved because she had the same genitalia as us. For us, as we go about our day, we laugh it off, we tell ourselves it doesn’t matter, that it didn’t hurt when we were rejected because of our personality, our identity, that we’ve overcome it. In speaking out, you can help other people, the people like past-you, who might still be experiencing the pain because of accidental ignorance. You could help the people who stupidly dismissed their friends because they did not understand. I leave this newspaper asking for readers to do what I do: Spread the word and continue to learn about people who are different from you. At least every once in a while, read up on something, a gender orientation or sexuality that you don’t know about. Read the transgender article in the paper; try watching Orange is the New Black. Understand people before criticizing them for acting a certain way. And confide in them what you understand is true about yourself and who you are. You could most definitely save a life, whether through mutual understanding or shared awareness. And maybe, one day, instead of dismissing your past, laughing it off, you can talk about it and how far you’ve come. Be proud. You’re a fabulous, flawed human being, and you have a community that accepts you, sad backstory and all. *Names have been changed to protect the identity of people in the story.

The food we eat gives our bodies the “information” and materials they need to function properly. If we don’t get the right nutrition our bodies ability to breakdown food and transform it into energy suffers and our health declines. If we get too much food, or food that gives our bodies the wrong instructions, we can become overweight, undernourished, and at risk for developing a variety of diseases and conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines medicine as: “The science and art dealing with the maintenance of health and the prevention, alleviation, or cure of disease.” According to this definition food can act as medicine as it works to maintain, prevent, and treat disease. In short, what we eat is central to our health. This is particularly true for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Not only do PLWHA need proper nutrition in order to maintain and improve health but many of the medications they are prescribed must be taken with food. Good nutrition is important even from the early onset of HIV infection. Nutrition education at this initial stage gives the person a chance to achieve the following goals: build healthy eating

habits, improve the quality of the food they purchase and to learn about the proper cultivation, storage and cooking of food. Poverello plays an active role in seeking to achieve these goals. Through recent funding provided by The Smart Ride, Poverello was able to hire a part time nutritionist. The Poverello nutritionist provides both one-on-one nutritional counseling and nutrition education seminars. These services are augmented by periodic healthy cooking classes. All seek to help clients achieve an understanding of the value of proper diet and how to prepare nutritious meals in order to achieve optimal health. These services are extremely important for PLWHA. When nutritional needs are not met, research shows that recovery from illness takes longer. In addition, a person with HIV/AIDS may be receiving treatment for opportunistic infections and combination therapy for HIV. Good nutrition will reinforce the effect of the drugs taken. And perhaps most importantly, good nutrition can help extend the period of time that the person with HIV/ AIDS is well, working and active in the community.

Curaçao - Putting Gay Pride on Display in the Caribbean Denise Royal

4800 N. DIXIE HIGHWAY, FORT LAUDERDALE JUST SOUTH OF COMMERCIAL BLVD.

Curaçao is described as one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets. If you’re not a geography expert, Curaçao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast, that forms part of the Dutch Caribbean. It is home to more than 40 beaches and has a unique mix of culture and history. This island, complete with its natural beauty and ideal weather, is one of the few gay-friendly locations in the Caribbean. Curaçao shares a climate with the 34 other Caribbean islands, but it’s very different than its neighbors. Unlike Jamaica and other former British colonies in the Caribbean that inherited colonial anti-sodomy laws, Curaçao has always welcomed the LGBT community with great accommodations, events and attitude. In fact, Curaçao boasts 17 IGLTA (International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association) members, the largest in the Caribbean. “From a Curaçao standpoint [being a native], we carry and breathe the Dutch lifestyle in form of a “Live and Let Live” mentality. We call it on the island “Biba i Laga Biba.” And you know that the Dutch are quite open minded, progressive about this. This has translated over the years into a more ‘all welcoming’ attitude towards the LGBT traveler,” says Curaçao Tourist Board Marketing Manager at Andre Rojer. And now, for the second straight year, Curaçao takes its LGBT celebrations to a new

level with its second annual Pride Week. Festivities run from September 24-28. “Pride Week has grown from just a local party to an impressive flow of visitors from all around the world, that chose to combine the discovery of a new and different destination with the island happenings and parties that week. Pride continues to grow and is fun and festive. The Floris Suites Hotel is the host property being the most welcoming property of the Caribbean,” said Rojer. “Live and Let Live” may be Curaçao’s motto, but during Pride Week, it seems to change a bit to “Party and Let Party.” Curaçao Pride is a 4-day long event filled with plenty of festivities and activities. Curaçao is located just two and a-half hours from South Florida by plane. Visitors can enjoy the vast beaches, 18-hole championship golf course, amazing dolphin interaction program, casinos and more. “For someone who hasn’t been there yet my best recommendation would be to immerse themselves with the island’s culture, taste the local cuisine, visit places of interest and learn bits of our native and local language; Papiamentu. The island offers so much, it would be a pity to just spend your vacation on the beach,” Rojer said. Visit www.CuracaoPride.com for more information.

oys Don’t Cry” is B film HOMO HISTORY 101 madeanin independent 1999 based on

the true story of trans man Brandon Teena.

Pier Angelo

People:

Renée Richards (born Richard Raskind - 1934) is an American ophthalmologist, author and former professional tennis player. In 1975, Richards underwent sex reassignment surgery. She was denied entry into the 1976 U.S. Open by the United States Tennis Association, citing an unprecedented women-bornwomen policy. She disputed the ban, and the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor in 1977. This was a landmark decision in favor of transgender rights. Through her fight to play tennis as a woman, she challenged gender roles and became a role model and spokesperson for the transgender community. Italy’s Vladi Luxuria (born Wladimiro Guadagno- 1965) is the first transgender member of Parliament in Europe (elected in 2006), Although Luxuria lives exclusively as a female, she has not

undergone sex change surgery and she remains legally male. She has stated on occasion that she perceives herself as neither male nor female. Luxuria has long been a strong advocate for gay rights and a participant in events promoting equality for homosexuals. She helped organize Italy’s first gay pride festival in 1994 and continued her activism throughout her tenure as a politician; in May 2007, she took part in the second Muscovite gay pride parade. She used her prominence in Italian politics once elected as a platform for advocating gay rights. In the lead-up to her election, Luxuria made gay rights an issue of her campaign and felt herself to be a representative of the LGBT community, saying, “We don’t want privileges – we want our rights.” In addition, Luxuria called for civil unions to be enabled for gay couples and for Italy to accommodate political asylum for “all gays who try to get into Italy from countries where homosexuality is punishable by death”.

New Zealand’s Georgina Beyer (born George Bertrand - 1957) is a trans woman who became the world’s first openly transsexual mayor, as well as the world’s first openly transsexual Member of Parliament, and from 27 November 1999 until 14 February 2007 was an MP for the Labour Party of New Zealand. She was also among a very small number of former sex workers to hold political office.

Showbiz

Boys Don’t Cry is a 1999 American independent film directed by Kimberly Peirce and co-written by Andy Bienen. It is a dramatization of the reallife story of Brandon Teena, a trans man played in the film by Hilary Swank, who is beaten, raped and murdered by his male acquaintances after they discover he is anatomically female. The picture explores the themes of freedom, courage, identity and empowerment. The film was distributed

by Fox Searchlight Pictures and was released theatrically in October 1999. Swank was awarded an Oscar for Best Actress. The film was named after the song of the same name by The Cure, and a cover version of the song appears in the film.

Exhibit “Transcending Gender: Bodies and Lives” addresses the

intersection of gender and transgender people as part of the larger LGBT acronym. Exploring the interconnectedness and separateness of gender and sexual orientation, the exhibit presents language and etiquette addressing transgender people and subjects, as well as a timeline of the cultural and human rights struggles of transgender people in the United States. Because Beefsteak’s is part of the Boardwalk Bar, you can imbibe freely with your meal, from classic mimosas to my own new favorite, the Lava Flow, a classic piña colada blended with light rums poured over a strawberry purée. I must admit I did also like their ‘Brunette Slut Mojito,’ or was it just the young muscular brunette dancer? I forget. Even the names of the drinks are erotic and entertaining. You can try Ramon’s African Cum shot, the x-boyfriend, or a ménage a trios- all drinks designed to leave you smiling. The establishment also features a 2 for 1 Happy Hour from 3 to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Fortunately, the staff of SFGN went for a

1 p.m. lunch, so no one got to have ‘Sex with the Bartender.’ Don’t get the wrong idea. That’s just the name of another one of their many creative and unique drinks. The main dishes are presented under the outdoor awnings and on their breezy patios, with flexible table settings capable of holding large parties. There is an outdoor bar, TV screens, and occasional karaoke nights. The bottom line is you can dress informally, eat plentifully, and the costs are modest. While the menu is typically American, it includes Victor’s homemade shepherd’s pie and you never know when he might show up with a wiener schnitzel special. Sometimes, he even prepares his very special secretsauce-melt-in-your-mouth meatballs, a recipe guarded like Coca Cola. Whether you are seeking out a hearty and healthy salad or indulging in a nacho frenzy, your group will have a wide variety of choices, including the menu’s star- Fort Lauderdale’s ‘Most Outrageous and Expensive Angus Cheeseburger,’ which requires two hands to hold and a large, wide mouth to eat. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Beefcakes opens at 11 a.m. for brunch. If you are looking for late night snacks, their kitchen is open until 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends. It’s casual dining, with generous portions and a pleasant atmosphere with good food and a friendly staff combine to create an entertaining and enjoyable dining experience.

Straight From Broadway GableStage Snags Rights to Latest McNally Play J.W. Arnold Submitted Photo

“Mothers and Sons” Weeks before the Tony Award-nominated “Mothers and Sons” closed at The Golden Theatre on Broadway, the enterprising artistic director of GableStage, Joseph Adler, landed the rights. This weekend, South Florida audiences will be among the first across the country to see Terrence McNally’s critically acclaimed, gay-themed play. The 90-minute, one act show explores the real time reunion of a mother who lost her son nearly 20 years ago and his former partner, who is now married and raising a young son with his husband. “First of all, I’m a huge fan of Terrence McNally,” explained Adler. “He’s one of our great American playwrights and this is one of his better plays. That’s saying a lot because he’s written so many great plays.” Adler cites McNally’s “consummate craftsmanship, structure and ability to provide so much background about the characters without it sounding like boring exposition,” as appealing qualities, but ultimately he was drawn to the story. “This woman has just dropped in on somebody and in that time, you find out so much about their relationships, the three of them and the son she lost,” he said. “It’s a beautiful play that evokes laughter and tears.” Adler believes “Mothers and Sons” was the first Broadway or Off Broadway play to feature a married gay couple with a child, making the show an important commentary on the advancement of LGBT rights and acceptance. For the regional premiere, Adler assembled a distinguished cast of award-winning actors, including Angie Radosh in the role created by actress Tyne Daly (“Cagney & Lacey”) on Broadway and actor/playwright Michael McKeever as her son’s former partner. He said of the dream cast, “This has been an absolute joy. I’ve worked with Angie once before and I’ve known Michael for a long time, but never worked with him in a play. I don’t think I’ve had a better time. They’re so dedicated. It’s almost too easy.”

As a playwright, McKeever brings a unique perspective to his role, noting the big changes in the way LGBT families are viewed by society. “It really says a lot about how our world has changed,” McKeever commented. “Twenty years ago, there was such a stigma around AIDS and in just a few years, so much has changed. Getting married and having children is now the norm. [McNally] presents these issues in a really tight, smartly written hourand-a-half play.” When he learned he had attained the rights, Adler substituted “Mothers and Sons” into the last slot of his 2013-14 season, largely because of the opportunity to shape opinions in the community. An unabashed liberal, Adler warned, “We have a mid-term election coming up here in a state where the attorney general and the governor are doing everything they can to keep same sex marriage out of the law books. The play not only deals with [the issue], it makes a compelling case.” He quickly added, “Unfortunately, 50 percent of the assholes in this country are dinosaurs and a lot of them live in Florida.” As for Adler’s audiences, well, they’re used to edgy plays that tackle the issues society currently faces. Next season, the theater company will present two important LGBT-themed plays: “Choir Boy,” by the internationally-acclaimed gay playwright and Miami native Terrell Alvin McCraney, and “Casa Valentina,” Harvey Fierstein’s comedy set at a Catskills resort that caters to crossdressing men that also recently played on Broadway. Terrence McNally’s “Mothers and Sons” opens Saturday, Sept. 20 at GableStage, 1200 Anastasia Ave. (in the Biltmore Hotel) in Coral Gables, and runs through Oct. 19. Tickets are $47.50 – 50 at GableStage.org. FREE tickets are available for LGBT audiences to the preview at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. Call the box office, 305-445-1119 to reserve seats. soflagaynews //
