SOUTHWEST EXPLORATIONS

The outdoors beckons, and we are responding to the call! Travel near or far for a wonderful exploration of the Southwest. We also are teaching about the region in the classroom, where we look at ancient and contemporary cultures. Whether you want to hike the terrain or sit comfortably in discussion, Southwest Explorations has a class for you.

NEW! RAILROADING IN NEW MEXICO, 1878 TO THE PRESENT HANDS-ON INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WITH DSLR Learn the basics of using your digital SLR (DSLR) camera through classroom demonstrations, discussions, a photo assignment and a field session. Topics include the different types of DSLR cameras, how to use aperture and shutter speeds, white balance (what it is and how to use it), camera filters, the basic principles of effective composition and more. This class is recommended for those new to DSLR photography as well as film photographers who want to switch to digital. Students must have a digital SLR camera. Railroads have played a key role in New Mexico’s history from 1878 to the present. Amtrak service continuance, funding for the Rail Runner commuter train and other elements began with the Santa Fe Railroad Company and the dozens of other railroad companies to follow. Transportation, economics, labor law and land use are all affected by railroads. New Mexico had new, respected jobs with the development of the railroads. ANIMAL TRACKING Learn more about those animal tracks you’ve noticed on your walks or hikes. This class covers tracking techniques, perceptual widening, different track patterns, scale and animal gaits, rates of track deterioration, clues to animal behavior and animal interaction with the landscape. Students must provide their own transportation. An itinerary is provided after registration. Class size is small to allow for more personal attention, so early registration is encouraged.
