PRESENTACIÓN CUADERNOS PARA LA DOCENCIA La Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria puso en marcha, en 2001, una convocatoria anual dedicada a la publicación de manuales docentes para la enseñanza universitaria, realizados por el personal docente de nuestra institución. Esa iniciativa pretendía ofrecer unos manuales docentes que tuvieran un diseño uniforme y unos contenidos rigurosos, adaptados a las exigencias de nuestras titulaciones. De esa manera, la ULPGC mostraba y sigue mostrando su compromiso con la mejora de la calidad de la docencia, de la investigación y de los servicios que presta a la sociedad. Debemos, por ello, felicitarnos por el éxito alcanzado en el camino recorrido. Sin embargo, la experiencia acumulada a lo largo de estos años, así como la respuesta obtenida por parte del profesorado y la revisión de las publicaciones efectuadas, hace necesario que se introduzcan nuevas colecciones que dinamicen el sistema de publicación y que, al mismo tiempo, hagan más accesibles los materiales a los alumnos para garantizar que los recursos de apoyo al aprendizaje sean adecuados y se ajusten a sus necesidades. En esa línea trabajarán, en los próximos años, el Vicerrectorado de Comunicación, Calidad y Coordinación Institucional, el Vicerrectorado de Profesorado y Planificación Académica, y el Servicio de Publicaciones y Difusión Científica de esta Universidad para desarrollar todos los sectores relacionados con la calidad, la cualificación y el aprendizaje permanente. La nueva colección de Cuadernos para la docencia, editada por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, surge como una alternativa para la publicación de materiales docentes de las diferentes materias o asignaturas que se imparten en los títulos de la ULPGC, en su modalidad de

Enseñanza Presencial para que haga más dinámico el desarrollo de la docencia y facilite el seguimiento de los contenidos por parte de los alumnos. Deseo agradecer a los autores de estas publicaciones su empeño por adaptar sus contenidos a las exigencias editoriales de esta colección, así como su generosa predisposición a redactar unos materiales docentes que se ajustan a los requisitos de este tipo de publicaciones. Espero y deseo que los estudiantes que van a utilizar estos cuadernos sepan apreciar el valor del trabajo bien hecho y el esfuerzo que sus autores han puesto en su realización. Introduction English for ICT and Maths. A student's book aims at filling a gap in the study of English for computing sciences. The book has been designed and written by four University teachers from different disciplines enrolled as members of the Education Innovation Group "Las matemåticas avanzan" (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), making a volume that is unique in scope. The present manual combines features pertaining to English for Maths and English for Computing so that students of computing science may easily follow descriptions of computing processes involving algebraic, or any other type of mathematical formulae. In this volume, the students will practise all the four skills of a language with an outcome of a B1 level, while learning the basics of the linguistic terminology associated with the study of scientific English, including textual production and analysis. This is achieved by specific training on reading and writing, but also on speaking and listening the language in the two fields covered, namely computing science and maths. The contents are organized into sections dealing with specific aspects of English. We have labelled these sections, as follows: •
Reading comprehension. It presents a real text, and this is followed by a set of questions concerning the contents of the text. The student may be asked to write specific texts on the topic of the reading. This is highly beneficial because the students are giving explicit advice on 9

how to write their texts, and the language associated with that specific text along with the way in which information is organized into coherent chunks. •
Grammar review. Although our main intention is not to describe linguistic and grammar features of English, we have thought important to cover and review some grammatical points, which are fundamental in scientific writing, e.g. the use of imperative. For this reason, this section is intended to succintly review these grammar points with short descriptions and examples, and all this is complemented with activities.

Vocabulary booster. This section concentrates on vocabulary related to computing science and maths. The activities included in this section seek to increase the learner's stock of vocabulary in the disciplines under study: crosswords, synonyms, definitions, etc.

Pronunciation corner. Students will learn the sounds of English. This information is very helpful in their way to become autonomous learners of the language. They are shown how sounds are pronounced, and where they can get phonetic information concerning new words. We have been very careful with the amount of phonetic information included in the Units. It is extremely important that students acquire this new knowledge smoothly so that they do not feel overwhelmed by the amount of new concepts they have to deal with.

Text-types and genres. This section covers aspects of discourse analysis. Genres are the way in which information is organized in texts, and represent an important part of research in the field of specialized English. By knowing genres, students will be able to write their own texts. A manual of instructions, a scientific abstract and a letter are examples of what students will be trained in. Text-types concern with the language associated with particular texts. An instructive text-type is used in genres such as the manual of instructions, and instructive text-types are often associated with

certain linguistic units, such as imperative verbs, time expressions, and nominalizations, among others. A final section of this book presents two new texts for students to review and practice the contents they have learnt in this manual.
