[ Leaders ] As we reflect on the successes and challenges of this past year, one thing is clearer than ever: Sequoia Riverlands Trust is, by nature, a source of hope and calm amid flux.

In December 2013, SRT achieved accreditation by the prestigious Land Trust Alliance. This designation reflects the solid financial position and sound business practices that will ensure our continuity of operation in the decades ahead.

To our longtime donors, partners, clients and volunteers, our accreditation affirms that their time and treasure have been well invested.

California’s ongoing drought, uncertainties around climate change, and agribusiness sustainability are now perpetual discussion matters.

Although the complications arising from those issues are manifold, SRT provides institutional continuity even as we question our most basic assumptions about our relationship to the natural world: Can we adapt? Will we thrive? How must our mission change in response to new realities?

These paradigm shifts do not present easy solutions. But they drive us on to innovate and explore new ways of doing business.

SRT – whose home county land is more than 50% conserved – continues to manage six preserves, However, we have broadened our conservation mission to address sustainability.

While we expanded Kaweah Oaks Preserve this year, we strengthened our focus on mitigation services and

drought-tolerant native plant production, which are increasingly important growth sectors for SRT. We recently achieved Mitigation Land Holder certification from the State of California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Further, SRT has expanded its mission to land use advocacy and urban planning. This aims to recognize the anticipated population growth in the San Joaquin Valley and to encourage decision makers at all levels to accommodate growth in ways least impactful to our farms and ranches.

When we look ahead, another thing is clear: We cannot do this work without you. Your faith in conservation principles and in our work are of paramount importance to SRT’s future. Thank you for endeavoring with us. That partnership is more important than ever, given our changing environment.

A L E G AC Y begins by

[ Connecting ] Jody Nicholson’s major gift commemorates a love story at SRT’s Kaweah Oaks Preserve

Jody and Knox Nicholson got quite a

surprise when, out on a Sunday drive, they stumbled onto a nature preserve they didn’t know existed. Knox, a pilot and farmer who had grown up not far from the land, pulled over and took Jody for a spontaneous hike that day, just after their relocation back to their home county, Tulare.

He and Jody discovered that the land he had known since boyhood had been preserved while living away. The land was full of wonder for the couple. That day, they followed trail after trail, becoming acquainted with the Valley Oak-covered arcing pathways, each Sycamore-lined creek bank, the alkali meadows and native species who called it home.

They would return to Kaweah Oaks (KOP) many times over in their 30 years together.

In declining health in his later years, Knox loved to revisit KOP’s trails with Jody. Although Alzheimer’s was taking its toll, he asked her many times to go to KOP, to be among the oaks one more time. There they walked amid primeval forests that are home to

hundreds of native plant and animal species. Kaweah Oaks had become “their place.”

Following his passing, Jody chose to honor Knox’s memory and her memories of KOP made with him by offering a major donation to The Campaign for Kaweah Oaks Preserve some two years later.

Then she made another. And then, amazingly, yet another even larger donation.

SRT Development and Community Relations staff works hard to build relationships and attract financial support by engaging the community in our multi-faceted programming. So when a series of substantial contributions arrive seemingly without active courtship, we know there must be a great story behind it.

Jody and Knox’s story is one we won’t forget, as Jody and many other community members helped SRT acquire 22 long-sought acres for the preserve, a parcel whose boundaries placed it in a vulnerable location at the heart of the property.

Jody’s gift helped us reconnect deforested land that will be restored. Her gift will also connect to the future when, perhaps decades from now, KOP will be enjoyed by young lovers strolling along Deep Creek under the shade of a generous Sycamore tree they’ll think of as “their place.” •

Luis was a standout in the program from early on, quickly distinguished himself as an essential teammate, a highly-engaged intern full of great questions, thoughtful ideas, and palpable enthusiasm for a future career in conservation, a field which is notably short on Latino careerists.

Midway through the SRT internship, however, Luis’ family, who earn their living as migrant farmworkers, beckoned him to hit the hot July road for work in the fields. The peaches were ripening up in the northern San Joaquin Valley. Luis had committed to joining them in order to help his

6 parents make ends meet, hard-workers who struggle to feed their six kids.

Luis would have to leave the internship program. His loss from the program would be keenly felt.

Privately, SRT staff were crestfallen at his announcement, but game faces went on. The project-based learning experience had to go on to complete Blue Oak Ranch’s trail design, mapping, and documentary filmmaking, among the many challenges conducted outdoors in the midsummer heat.

Luis represented progress in outreach to the Latino community, one whose elders do not regard conservation’s outdoor work as a particularly vertical career move. They often view it with an understandably jaundiced eye, given the association with farm labor.

SRT’s innovative Internship Program is a collaboration with Porterville Unified School District’s Pathways program, a work-based learning program that exposes students to a variety of fields and real-world career skills they’ll need. The Environmental Sciences Academy collaboration is

important in that it offers exposure to an important but somewhat obscure career path for area high school students. But it is especially important to attracting diversity in an overall conservation field that is not especially known for it, in an area whose Latino population is less conservation-oriented than the largely white audience that supports conservation nonprofits like land trusts.

But a change of heart came to Luis. On the day he was to leave for the fields, he made a decision. Despite his commitment to help his family, he knew that his long-term career goals and their wellbeing were better served by staying with the internship to learn the skills that would better his place in life, to learn GPS technology, staking, native species protection and identification, teamwork, and many other skills that he was gaining. Luis had broken out. He was taking the first major step toward his future.

Even a little stinging nettle wasn’t enough to make Luis sorry he stayed the course. But that offered a breakout of another kind. •

OUR ROLES are

[ Expanding ] Habitat restoration finds a home at Denmark’s Ingleby Farms’ California location SRT is well known as both advocate and steward of the Central California heartland’s important conservation lands. But SRT’s role is expanding. We’re significantly increasing our capacity, impact, reach, and expectations via our collaborations with numerous partners in agribusiness, education, and conservation, among other fields.

One such advance is reflected in SRT’s habitat restoration design services recently provided to Ingleby Farms & Forests, a worldwide agricultural producer committed to helping feed the world in a sustainable way. You could sum up Ingleby’s approach to farming with this phrase ... “to do well by doing good.” Carl’s Island, on Ingleby’s Burrel Ranch in western Fresno County represents an innovative fusion of artistic habitat restoration amid productive agricultural land. The vision is to reconcile harmonious conservation and agribusiness objectives visa-vis its creative use of irrigation water reservoirs. These formerly single-use basins, part of the irrigation system that waters Ingleby’s pistachio groves, now also serve in

restoring and enhancing valuable habitat for the region’s native and migratory wildlife species.

“A lot of farms have holding basins, but they’re generally just barren and utilitarian rectangles.

Industrial farmers typically work hard to keep out anything but their crops,” says Andrew Glazier, SRT native species nursery manager who helped design the island’s habitat and propagated most of the recently established indigenous plants at SRT’s native plant nursery. “But Carl’s Island is now a rich habitat amid a 3,800-plus acre pistachio farm that encourages biodiversity by setting aside a safe place for native flora and fauna. It gives the farmer the ability to work with nature – and not see nature as an enemy,” said Glazier, who attended Otis Parsons School of Design.

Maya Lin’s artwork entitled 11 Minute Line, an earthwork in Sweden, inspired the island’s design, in part. “We were discussing how her sculpture is visible from space on Sweden’s 10,000acre Wanås Estate and sculpture art garden. SRT Board member Rob Hansen brought up that we could do something similar on Carl’s Island. Upon looking at the California farm from space [using Google Earth satellite imagery], I saw such rigidity in the rectangular pond, with its rectangular island amid the grid of thousands of straight rows of trees, that

I was inspired by the lifeaffirming shapes of artists like Braque, Calder, and Miro,” Glazier said of the kidney or amoeboid shapes that define the island’s high points. “From space, they appear whimsical. When the pond floods, they form individual islands where duck eggs can now be found,” Glazier said. In addition, the Ingleby company logo will be planted using native grasses.

Integrating “scruffy” areas of habitat into intensively farmed agricultural land is more common in European farming, Glazier points out. For example, he cites England’s hedgerows, which were initially just walls. “But over time they became habitats that are now

a national treasure. Farmers now know that beneficial insects help keep crops free of harmful insects while avoiding the vulnerabilities familiar to mass farming’s typical monocultures. “Carl’s Island is a great example of mixed use,” Glazier added.

Hansen, Professor of Biology and Ecology at College of the Sequoias and the principal biologist at Hansen’s Biological Consulting (who introduced his client, Ingleby, to SRT for the project), says that venues like Carl’s Island “could serve as a learning habitat for school children from the local community, or for organized groups of visiting bird watchers and nature photographers. These habitats are the hallmark of astute farmers

who pursue ecological intensification ... an ideal that seeks to increase yields while reducing the environmental footprint of crop production.

“Such wildlife-friendly farming (using minimal farm chemicals) is compatible with wildlife, including raptors like red-tailed hawks, Swainson’s hawks, and barn owls (the owls use over 100 owl boxes maintained by Ingleby for nesting at the Burrel Ranch) and beavers – numerous San Joaquin Valley native species,” Hansen said. “We counted seven bird species on the island at the project outset. The Carl’s Island bird inventory is now approaching 50 species,” he said.

To ensure that the island’s plant species thrive under the care of the Ranch’s field crews, Hansen and Glazier developed a bilingual pamphlet of plant-recognition photographs that details both native and nonnative plants. Now, in addition to their work to ensure a thriving pistachio crop, non-English speaking workers can become familiar with Spanish names for plant identification.

In this way, the partnership with SRT has been able to add interest to the work lives of the farm’s employees. Knowing how to recognize and encourage the plant species which promote desirable habitat, food, and cover for native wildlife provides a stimulating and educational new dimension that can enhance the enjoyment of Ranch employees’ daily work lives.

“More and more recharge basins are being built as municipalities realize they must bank their water.

So, instead of being maintained as just single-use facilities, as these areas are enhanced and populated with wildlife, they can have trails, interpretive signage for both kids and adults, and ultimately provide conjunctive-use benefits including landscape aesthetics, recreation and groundwater recharge,” Hansen said.

This new thinking about holding reservoirs and recharge basins promises to be a growth area for SRT as California water management becomes ever more crucial amid our ongoing drought and concerns over climate change. •

THE ART of

[ Engaging ] An artist-farmer brings his multidimensional talents and perspectives to SRT

Artist. Farmer. Business owner.

Brand manager. Musician. Conservationist. Philosopher. Family man…. Renaissance man. Paul Buxman wears all those hats and more, on any given day. And fortunately for SRT, when he isn’t farm-

ing or painting somewhere on his acreage, he generously engages his multi-faceted talents for the benefit of the organization.

Those various forms of work are, to him, like meditations on sustenance and sustainability. They reflect sensibilities honed when he nearly lost son Wyeth to leukemia, which Paul attributes to ag chemical exposure. All of Paul’s seemingly disparate roles are highly consistent expressions of his value

as he delicately put it, he did not have in mind Buxman’s skill nor loving vision of the land he knows and treats so well.

for living well within nature’s constraints.

One important way he and Ruth partner with SRT is via the farmland easement SRT holds on Sweet Home Ranch, the northern Tulare County land that he and wife Ruth have farmed since 1980. “This voluntary agreement ensures that this land will be conserved. I see the easement as adding real value,” Paul said.

“A little more than one percent of the earth’s surface is actually farmable. That’s it. Only that one percent enables us to survive. I don’t think people realize that. When you remove arable land and put it into something non-productive - at least in the way of producing food and fiber – to bring it back into some kind of agrarian use is a massive undertaking,” he said.

He recently hosted SRT’s innovative mentoring program, in which at-risk youth are paired with conservationists who shepherd them toward conservation field careers.

Paul’s art is also part of SRT, proudly displayed with an inclusion in its plein air landscape collection. SRT staff helped organize a group exhibition at Arts Visalia, a regional nonprofit arts space that featured Paul’s magnificent paintings, with sales proceeds that benefited both SRT and the arts organization. Clearly, when writer Gerald Haslamobserved that California’s heartland “resisted poetry”

One such expression was Buxman’s founding of California Clean, an organization dedicated to working with farmers to promote healthful agricultural practices. He and wife Ruth farm their 55 acres only according to certified organic practices.

Through both his art and farming, Buxman knows intimately his land, the varying atmospheric conditions, the quality of light, the soil – everything that makes a great farmer and a fine artist. He works alongside his wife, Ruth, and son Wyeth along with the family retriever, Ned, at Sweet Home Ranch, with their own packing operation that ships the Buxmans’ produce.

He has appeared on CBS, 60 Minutes, Bill Moyers Journal and NPR, among many other U.S., Canadian, and Australian media outlets.

SRT expanded mission and enhanced standing with LTA accreditation in 2013 SRT reached many important milestones in 2013. Perhaps most important among them arrived when SRT achieved accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance (LTA), the national organization whose mission is to ensure best practices for U.S. conservation nonprofits like SRT. Following a rigorous review process, SRT was determined to

Collins is a noted smart growth advocate and practitioner, as principle in the urban planning firm Collins & Schoettler.

His leadership has proven useful with regard to organizational priorities around land use, the urban/ rural interface, and an increased focus on mitigation services.

In addition to continuing expansion of SRT’s mission, spheres of influence broadened as well.

SRT Conservation Director Hilary Dustin organized a major tour for guests from Google Executive Chair Eric Schmidt’s 11th Hour Project, an organization devoted to values shared by SRT. Corporate sponsors Southern California Edison, Sempra, and Alcoa/Kawneer remained faithful partners in executing our mission to conserve California’s heartland.

Also in 2013, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife bestowed Mitigation Landholder credentials on SRT, thereby greatly enhancing our ability to provide

mitigation services.

SRT staff were key players at the California Economic Summit, where the subject working landscapes was one of eight priority areas for the state, particularly the importance of regenerating rangelands and watershed management to California’s economic success and environmental sustainability.

This sampling of SRT’s 2013 accomplishments represents major advances in the company’s standing, network, and mission, situating the organization well for more progress in upcoming years. •

In addition to her SRT commitments, Exedcutive Director Soapy Mulholland continued her numerous involvements in organizations beyond SRT, such as the Tejon Ranch Conservancy Board, the Leavens’ Ranch Board of Directors, the Stewardship Council, and the Aldo Leopold Award, among others.
