I feel like I’ve come home," said Debbie Smith, a 1984 graduate of Hiwassee Dam High School. Smith is the new family nurse practitioner at the school’s health center. She serves students from the elementary, middle and high schools, and Ranger Elementary School who range in age from 10-19. The health clinic is an entity of the Cherokee County Health Department and is funded with a state grant. The grant’s focus is to ensure that all students have access to health care. The health center offers a variety of services. One of the current goals of the health center is to ensure that all enrolled students have their immunizations up to date. In addition, the clinic’s goal is to address prevention with emphasis on therapeutic life

styles. "We want to identify children at risk for developing serious chronic health conditions like diabetes and cardiac disease," Smith said. "We also provide students with their athletic physicals.
