A YMCA Family Center will be built on property next to Viera Charter School — if fundraising efforts are successful. A plan for a Viera YMCA is envisioned on 5.04 acres in Viera, and could feature such amenities as an outdoor walk-in swimming pool, a lap pool, a 6,000-square-foot workout area and a full-sized basketball court, said Dr. Brenda Fettrow, the YMCA of Central Florida district vice president of the Lake Nona and Brevard County YMCAs. Suntree Internal Medicine opens at Brevard Medical City BY MIKE GAFFEY

Brevard Medical City, an upscale, one-stop shop for residents’ medical needs that is transforming the Wickham Road corridor in Suntree, is rapidly taking shape. “The project is going as planned and everything around it is developing as well,” said Eric Hardoon, president of ME Site Works, LLC and the son of Dr. Abe Hardoon, who purchased the 24.5-acre property on the east side of Wickham Road and Pineda Court. The project’s anchor, Suntree Internal Medicine, opened in late June at its

new 31,000-square-foot facility at 6619 N. Wickham Road, moving from its old office at 903 Jordan Blass Drive. Dr. Abe Hardoon bought the land with a plan of eventually moving Suntree Internal Medicine to a larger location and surrounding it with other medical facilities. Eric Hardoon’s brother, Scott, a doctor, also works at the practice, and Eric Hardoon operates ME Site Works out of an office at the center. The expanded center offers a variety of medical services, including physical exams, 72-hour glucose testing and glaucoma screening.

Construction crews from Melbourne-based Certified General Contractors recently raised the first walls of Suntree Diagnostic Center next to Suntree Internal Medicine. The 15,000-square-foot facility is a second location for Viera Diagnostic Center, which operates at 7000 Spyglass Court at Murrell Road. “People can just walk right next door,” Hardoon said. “In fact, we have a courtyard connecting the two facilities. It’s going to be really nice between the two buildings once they’re open.” Groundbreaking recently took place for two of four planned office condo complexes, Hardoon said. Groundbreaking on the third complex is scheduled this month, and work starts on the fourth later this year. “The first two buildings will be done by Jan. 1,” Hardoon said. “They’re going in simultaneously.” Groundbreaking on a 90bed, HUD-financed assistedliving facility will be Oct. 1, Hardoon said. The facility will be named Chateau Madeleine in memory of Hardoon’s grandmother, who died last year. Hardoon said he’s also in the planning stages for construction of an independent living facility next door. The county recently approved naming the main entrance road Hardoon Lane, he added. A connecting road will link Brevard Medical City to Pineda Landings, a Fresh Market-anchored retail center also being built by Certified General Contractors just south of the complex. “There’s a side road going from Jordan Blass Drive straight through Pineda

Landings and Brevard Medical City that will come right out at Pineda Court, so it’ll be able to alleviate traffic on Wickham Road,” said Hardoon, who is also developing Pineda Landings. “This is going to be unlike anything that’s been seen here before,” Hardoon said. Hardoon is designing a contest between local artists for the opportunity to add a piece of artwork that reflects the Suntree area. The winning sculpture or mural would be outside Suntree Internal Medicine, which Hardoon said spawned the current building trend along Wickham Road. “They’re going to be

breaking ground in the next few months on a 30-plus acre townhome complex which is right next to Pineda Landings all the way to Petty’s (Meats),” Hardoon said. “This first building is what triggered everything because there was a ton of environmental issues on all of this property that we addressed through mitigation. Sale of surplus Suntree-area land nixed by Brevard County Commission

In a surprise reversal, the Brevard County commission voted unanimously against selling surplus land it owns in the Suntree area that might have been home to at least 100 new families with access in and out through the Springs of Suntree neighborhood. “I have to admit I came here prepared to support this,” District 1 Commissioner and Chairman Robin Fisher said to about 150 residents at the July 7 meeting, “But you’re bigger than the $2 million we would have got from the sale,” he said, reading some of the names of the 30 residents who filled out a card to speak in opposition. “Quality of life has to be considered as a factor when we are also trying to make sound business decisions.” Dist. 4 Commissioner Curt Smith, who lives along the Indian River Lagoon near Post Road in the same district as the proposed development, acknowledged that the 114 acres under consideration had been historically plotted for residential development, and that what looks like a vacant lot along Rock Springs Drive was plotted for a street. However, it had become all but forgotten as the Springs of Suntree essentially landlocked it in. “It’s a case of trying to put your underwear on after you’ve got your pants on,” he said, seconding Dist. 3 Commissioner Trudie Infantini’s motion to decline plans for the land sale. The area is north of Spyglass Hill Road, behind Suntree’s Devons Glen neighborhood ― which has a secondary access road to the property for emergency use only. The land most recently had been planned for rapidunderground disbursement of reclaimed water during times when supply exceeded demand for irrigation of Suntree golf courses and communities. It was declared surplus by the Brevard County Utilities Department

Several suggested the best use of the land is to retain it so as not to impact flood control while allowing it to remain a home for more than 400 documented endangered gopher tortoises, which would have cost $400,000 to relocate. “Who’s going to stand up for them?” asked Emi Enrique, the teenager joining her father, Eric, at the podium as he protested what he said would be the destruction of the quiet street and route to the community’s focal-point Springs of Suntree clubhouse and playground. She added that a documented bald eagle living in the adjacent wetlands preserve frequently uses the area to hunt. Many residents pointed out that congested traffic flow out of Springs of Suntree onto Holiday Springs Road north onto Viera Boulevard would snarl an already jammed intersection ― planned for improvement by The Viera Company in 2017 ― as they attempted to access U.S. 1 to the north. The County Commission will study the best use of the land, with Dist. 2 Commissioner Jim Barfield inviting residents to serve on the search committee. If it were to be a nature

With little discussion, Brevard County commissioners July 21 unanimously approved The Viera Company’s request to allow more houses to be built in the rapidly growing community while reducing the amount of buildable office space. The company had proposed an amendment to its countyapproved master plan that would permit 800 additional units of detached senior housing, 150 additional units of attached senior housing, 468 additional units of detached single-family homes, 256 additional units of multi-family housing and eight extra hotel rooms. In exchange, the amendment would shrink general office space that can be built by nearly 400,000 square feet. Todd Pokrywa, senior vice president of land use, planning and development for The Viera Company, said the master plan needs to be amended to keep pace with rising demand for housing. The request, he said, conforms with the development order and has been reviewed without objections by the Florida Department of

Economic Opportunity, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Regional Planning Council and Brevard County staff. The exchange does not increase traffic, reduce any open space or impact any conservation areas, he added. Two people spoke against the exchange. Ronda Witt of Viera expressed concern about tax differences between businesses and homes, the added impact on schools, extra traffic and a potential loss of jobs from a reduction of business space. “I can understand why real estate agents want more houses, but more isn’t always better,” she said. “Brevard wants to develop but I think we need to develop wisely, and increased demand shouldn’t always immediately, without a lot of foresight and study, be recommended.” Pokrywa said he was pleased with the 5-0 vote. “The commission understands that the market is dynamic, and our development order was crafted in such a way that it gave us the ability to make those changes in response to the market, but coming back to them so that they’re advised as to what those changes are,” he said. Fettrow said the Viera YMCA Family Center is envisioned at about 27,000 square feet, but could be larger or smaller depending on community needs and financial support. The new facility would have a groupexercise classroom, lockers, showers, restroom facilities and office space, Fettrow said. “If a major donor comes in and wants a diabetes prevention center and a healthy eating café, this space might become a little bit bigger,” Fettrow said. “We have a zero-depth swimming pool on the drawing board, but if I have a donor who wants a naming opportunity and wants a lap pool and is a competitive swimmer, we may start to build a lap pool first. As we see donors in the community step up, it could take on a different configuration.” Once about $3.5 million in donations is raised, the YMCA of Central Florida, which operates 26 Y’s in six counties including Brevard, would select engineering and architectural firms and a builder to start the process in earnest, Fettrow said. “We’re looking at models around the country and looking at timeless architectural styles,” she said. “We want it to be appropriate in the Viera area and relevant 20 or 30 years down the road.” Dori Madison, chief marketing officer for the YMCA of Central Florida, envisions busy young

families grabbing healthy meals to go from a café at the Y after a late afternoon workout instead of driving to a fast-food restaurant. “It’s our goal to make all good choices easy,” Madison said. “We want to help people to change unhealthy eating habits. So that’s one reason we are investing in this healthy-eating space, because when people dine together, they’re more like to make smarter choices.” The facility would have about three to five full-time employees, 20 to 30 parttime workers and a host of volunteers, Fettrow said. The Viera YMCA would be the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations’ fourth Brevard County facility. Other YMCAs are in Suntree, Cocoa and Titusville.

Fettrow anticipates that the Viera location will have little negative impact on the 17,500-square-foot Suntree facility, which is about six miles away at 6300 N. Wickham Road, Suite 114, inside the Centre at Suntree Plaza. “I believe I-95 is a little bit of a barrier perhaps, and there’s an established community here with Suntree and Baytree and some other areas, and so this community likes the Suntree Y and supports the Suntree Y,” Fettrow said. “And Viera west of 95 is going to be booming as homes are built. We’ll be busting at the seams pretty rapidly. So it’s two different communities, two different service areas.” The Y hopes to partner with Viera Charter School, which lacks a gymnasium, Fettrow said. A fence likely would be erected between the school and the center for security reasons, she noted. This fall, Fettrow plans several events to further publicize the potential new facility. “I’ll invite community and business leaders to share the vision, tell the story and build excitement,” she said. The Viera Company already is thrilled with plans for a new YMCA. “Today’s YMCA is so much more than just a gym: Today’s YMCA is about youth development, healthy living and social responsibility and we have no doubt that the Viera community will support the YMCA,” Miller said. “Throughout our travels across the country visiting other award-winning master planned communities, the presence of a YMCA has

It’s been quite a summer for the Viera/Suntree Little League All-Stars. The 9-10 softball team won the District 2 and Section 2 championships, advancing to the state tournament. Big League Baseball, the only team in the district,

went to the sectional playoffs, but came up just short of moving on. The 9-10 baseball Gold team reached the district finals. Then there is the 1112 baseball team, which breezed through the District 2 tournament, going 5-0 and outscoring opponents 72-13. That put the VSLL in the

sectional tournament, which took place July 25. “I’m really proud of these boys and all of the hard work and effort they have put into this,” 11-12 manager Damien McDermott wrote in an email. The team certainly went into sectional play on a roll, hitting 21 home runs in five games — including six in a row and 10 overall in the championship game. J.T. Smith went 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBI in the 15-5 victory against Palm Bay East in the district finals. Cole Teply and Brett Anderson also hit a pair of home runs in that game while Joshua Mack, Peter Petracco, Liam Samuels and Sean Rodney also homered. For Big League Baseball, Nathan Beck, Jake Buck and Devan Pichalsky pitched well all summer and Jakob Hadad went 4 for 8 with two walks and two runs scored during the course of a threegame series in the sectionals against Port St. Lucie. The 9-10 softball team, meanwhile, got great play from Anna Brait, Skylar Waggoner, Jace Jackson, Tori Morris, Gracie Soehnlein, Taylor Koshlap, Natasha O’Neill, Jaydin Gentile, Lauren Allison, Madison Ford, Delilah Datta, Brooklin Hedges and Grace Rush all summer. “The girls played fantastic,” manager Paul Soehnlein wrote. “They were the only true Little League team in the

to become better teachers,” Blazer said. “The comment he made to me was, ‘I’m trying to learn as much as I can to be the best golf instructor I can be when I have that opportunity.’ When someone in their 20s says that, that’s impressive.” Having completed several internships, including a stint at the Nike Golf Camp in Pebble Beach, Calif. and graduating from college, the 22-year-old Moore has found the opportunity he was looking for. He’s a new golf instructor at Duran, and sees a lot of potential for the growth of the club’s academy program. “I think there are two key parts for golf instruction,” Moore said. “There’s obviously the results, but there’s also the relationship. With all of my certifications, I bring a good knowledge base, so the results are almost guaranteed. But at the same time, I’m creating a good relationship with them. “It’s all about having that good experience. From the moment they get there, they’re going to experience what they normally don’t experience at a golf lesson.” Moore and Blazer share a similar vision of the academy in that they want to turn it into a tour-like experience, where players are given a number of different avenues to enhance their game.

They also want to build a sense of a community among the younger players who will push each other to improve. “The whole model of a one-and-done lesson, having a lesson for one hour and then sending them home and saying, ‘See you in a week,’ … my vision for this golf academy is to have a collective effort to push each other forward and be a part of much more than just that one hour of time,” Moore said. Developing relationships with players, helping improve their game and

their life are just part of what set Moore apart from other instructors. “Not only does he get it and is up to date with what’s going on, he has that knack to learn and want to be the best and give each student that walks up to his lesson tee the best possible lesson,” Blazer said. “It’s not half done, or (thinking), ‘I’m just out here.’ “He’s going to give you everything he has. That’s the type of instructor I want to be around and I want at our academy.” VV

It’s been a good year for members of Duran’s Academy of Golf. Cash Luck began playing golf last June and enrolled in Duran’s Junior Summer Golf Camp. Within a year, he has won two Space Coast Junior Tour events in the 9-10 year-old division. Viera High’s Calvin Sierota was the Cape Coast Conference Player of the Year as a freshman last season and has been selected to the Florida Cup, which will be played Aug. 3 and 4 at the Vero Beach Country Club. Then there is Asher Joseph, who finished fourth in the U.S. Kids Golf European

Championship in Scotland this past May and is now preparing for his third trip to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst. For their first competition, these karate kids didn’t mind the hoopla at the massive U.S. Open held July 4th weekend at a Disney World resort in Orlando. Nineteen of the 26 members of Team MAS, for Michael A. Smith Dojo in Rockledge, competed against other Florida-based schools. “They did very well, especially for their first time. We’ll be going back next year for sure,’’ said Smith, a fourth-degree black belt who opened the dojo in 2003. “We have beginners through advance, yellow belt all the way through brown belt,’’ said team coordinator Joe Schwarz, stepfather of team member Sophia Wargo, 12, who has been involved for eight years. “I think a lot of them were surprised with the size of (the U.S. Open), but based on the results of it they did great,’’ he said. Kimberly Egoroff, 14, of Viera has been involved in the sport for two years and earned a huge trophy. “There were so many people there. I like watching other people do forms. It’s like dancing, but more intense. It’s nice going to the tournaments to see the different types,’’ she said. She competed along with her dad Ron Egoroff, 60, who got inspired by his daughter. “She’s done ballet, soccer, figure skating and theater on ice,” he said. “This is actually a lot safer than the other sports. I signed up when she did two years ago. It’s nice to have the exercise, but I get to keep up with her. By doing it, I understand it better. I’m even thinking about competing next year.” VV

Students at Manatee Elementary School will be coming back to a “new” school inside and out when the 2015-16 year starts Wednesday, Aug. 12. A $100,000 grant through the Brevard School District has provided more than 200 new computers, and new paint outside the school will change the facade from the familiar salmon and gray to teal and fawn. “This is an amazing investment in high technology that our students are going to be able to enjoy,” said Aaron Marcus, the school’s technology and network support associate, who now oversees 600 computers for students and staff. One hundred IBM Lenovo Thinkpad laptops will provide full PC access with the ability to create files in Office 2013, use interactive learning and testing websites and do Internet research, plus take tests. Threequarters of the laptops are on three 25-unit mobile carts to classroom checkout and the remaining 25 in a fixed computer lab.

She started her teaching career just south of Suntree at Longleaf Elementary in 2002, where she taught second grade and fifth grade. Trosset moved to alma mater Rockledge High to teach ninth- and 10thgrade Intensive Reading. She became a literacy coach in 2010, serving at Rockledge High, McNair Middle, Andersen Elementary and Sherwood Elementary schools. “My focus will be on getting to know Suntree families, students and teachers and building those relationships,” Trosset said. While she learns the ropes, Suntree principal Mecheall Giombetti’s focus will be on helping students adapt to new Florida evaluation standards to measure learning outcomes, which lean heavily on reading comprehension and response. “We live in an information society, world. We need kids to be able to read and understand on a deep level, higher levels,” Giombetti said. In response to growing frustration expressed by parents unable to help their children with their math homework, she’ll plan a family education night for parents to acquaint them with how students learn the same information they did, but take a different route.

Local military and public service players skate for charity BY MIKE GAFFEY

They came from as close as Viera to as far away as Anchorage, Alaska. Some 17 military and public service personnel from Brevard County who share a passion for hockey took to the ice in front of more than 200 spectators at Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge on July 11. The charity game pitted the local Wounded Warriors Hockey Club against the Tampa Bay Firefighters Hockey Club. The home team won 5-1, but the Tampa Bay Firefighters left the Iceplex with $2,200 raised for their charity, Camp Hopetak’e, a free weeklong overnight summer camp for children ages 5 to 17 who survived burn injuries. It was the second game for the Space Coast team, which is in the process of forming a nonprofit to formalize its standing as a charitable entity and continue to play for good causes. Their first game, a 10-6 loss to the Florida Institute of Technology in April, raised $2,340 for the Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP serves veterans who suffered physical or mental injuries since Sept. 11, 2001, and their families. The charity games with this roster are the brainchild of Master Sgt. Aaron Trudel, AFTAC’s radiochemistry lab superintendent. The Lowell, Mass. native formed an outreach of the original Wounded Warriors Hockey Club. With help from fellow hockey player and coworker William Hungate of Viera, the two assembled a team of hockey players with ties to government service from the surrounding community. The original Wounded Warriors Hockey Club was founded by Brevard County resident and retired firefighter Keith Schneider and features players with professional and college hockey experience, which includes Hungate. Chefs from three Viera-area senior communities will join chefs from four other facilities from around Brevard to battle for the Best Barbecue, and the smack talk is amping up in close-knit culinary circles. A V-J Day rememberance video premiere with live music will accompany the barbecue tasting on Friday, Aug. 14 in Cocoa to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive” is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Space Coast Convention Center at Holiday Inn Express, 301 Tucker Lane, hosted by Viera Voice sister newspaper Senior Life. Does barbecue veteran Darran Greenup, who will be cooking with workmate and soul food-expert Trevor Delaney from Wuesthoff Town Square in Viera, think his team will have it all but sewn up? He once had a company that toured the BBQ HQ region of Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. “As long as they bring their A game, they’ll be all right,” Greenup said with a smirk. While many senior communities are plucking top chefs from upscale restaurants to attract residents to resort-themed dining rooms, Viera Manor’s Brandy Nahass says she knows her “family.” “I cook like I would for my family because they are my family. They love meat and potatoes, so lots of meatloaf, roast beef, pot roast,” Nahass said of her residents, 95 percent of whom are veterans. Barbecue ribs are a specialty, so Greenup, take notice. Cottages in Rockledge team up to tap a variety of ethnic dishes, from Gurley’s native Germany to Lucier’s favorite Mexican dishes. But make no mistake, their menu “from blue jeans to black tie” includes many barbecue favorites. The remaining senior living communities in the battle for Best Barbecue include Buena Vida Estates, Brookdale, Grand Villa and Victoria Landing. Dessert samples will be provided by Consulate Health Care of Melbourne. Millennial videographer Alex Edwards of Melbourne has been capturing first-hand accounts from Space Coast residents who share their remembrances of that August day. The film will preserve memories for future generations. “It’s great hearing their experiences,” Edwards said. “It’s amazing to watch these wonderful people, some older than my grandparents, as their faces light up, remembering that single moment. Each one has a different perspective and I feel privileged to be able to participate in helping them share their stories.” Singing group Hot Cocoa will perform songs from the 1940s, and visitors can view exhibits. Attendees are encouraged to dress to reflect the era and recreate the iconic image of “Rosie the Riveter” or that of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square in New York City. Admission is free but tickets are required at this limited-capacity event. Donations collected will help send World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. with Space Coast Honor Flight. Flag Act gets blue ink after green light BY LINDA WIGGINS

The All American Flag Act bill that was originated by Viera High School students and approved by Florida legislators this spring will come to Brevard in August for a ceremonial signing by Gov. Rick Scott. “We are beyond thrilled at the accomplishments of our students,” said VHS senior Army JROTC instructor retired Lt. Col. Tim Thomas. The students began work on the bill two years ago that requires government entities across the state to purchase their U.S. flags in America from Americanmade parts. The bill fell short of approval last year and survived a last-minute threat in April as Thomas and former VHS teacher Matt Susin rallied supporters back home. The team made several trips to Tallahassee to press for support. Local photographer Natalie McCain wants women to love their bodies, especially mothers. She knows all too well the self-scrutiny that comes along with postpartum bodies and she wants to change that. “I want my daughter to know that she is more than what size her pants are … I want her to love herself. I want to show her that I am comfortable in my own skin and that she should be, too,” McCain said. That motivation pushed McCain to launch The Honest Body Project, a photography journey that has led to photographing nearly 50 area women of all shapes, sizes and ages. “Women are told how they should look and feel about their bodies, and it makes us uncomfortable in our actual bodies,” McCain said. “I started this project to show

women that their bodies are normal, and that other women look like they do.” McCain photographs the women at no charge at her home studio. The photos and accompanying stories are posted to the project’s website and Facebook page, which has more than 7,000 “likes” from people all over the world. The project has grown beyond simple images, though. The photos and stories have sparked impassioned online discussions on breastfeeding, bottle feeding, fighting cancer, grieving and more. McCain plans to turn the varied portraits and stories into a book. Titusville mom Amanda Sulick says that posing for The Honest Body Project was empowering. “Right before this project, I was in a state of selfloathing, hating that even though I had lost all of my pregnancy weight, my

clothes still didn’t fit the same. I was terrified to see how my pictures would turn out,” she said. “When I saw the photos for the first time I cried, but not tears of sadness. Tears of happiness. Seeing my daughter hug me tightly and smile in each of the pictures helped me learn to embrace and love my new, softer postpartum body.” For Rockledge mom of two Sonya Quertermous, the photos were about making a statement. “I wanted to show that you can have the same emotional connection with your baby if you bottle feed. And that there should be no shame in how you decide to feed your baby. As long as they are happy and healthy, that is all that matters,” Quertermous said. Golf tournament raises money for Alzheimer’s

Wawa, a convenience store chain revered by customers for its fresh sandwiches and coffee, is coming to Suntree. Work crews are clearing land at the northeast corner of Wickham Road and Pineda Causeway for the new store, one of four to six locations planned for Brevard County, Wawa Media Supervisor Colleen Labik said in an email. “We hope to open our first Brevard County stores in the second quarter of 2016,” Labik said. Suntree likely will be the first. In 2014, Wawa announced that it would open its first Brevard County store in West Melbourne. “We continue to work through the planning and development process with the local communities,” Labik said. Wawa has developed a devoted following of customers for its made-toorder hoagies and freshly brewed coffee. Stores offer hot breakfast sandwiches, made-to-order specialty

beverages, soups, sides, snacks and surcharge-free ATMs. Customers can order food items on computer touch screens. Most Wawas are open 24 hours a day, and about 400 stores sell gasoline. “They are one of the better thought-of convenience store chains in the country by any standard,” said Jeff Lenard, vice president of strategic industry initiatives with the National Association of Convenience Stores in Alexandria, Va. “I think what really draws customers to Wawa is their emphasis on people. You can see it in the stores. They put a huge emphasis on culture, getting the right people in the stores and making the stores feel like a welcome place to be. On top of that, they do a pretty good job with food and getting the right products. Because you can have smiles all day, but if you don’t have the right food and the right drinks, you’re not going to get people to come back.” Based in Wawa, Pa., the

economy and business climate, its growing population and its large number of transplanted Northerners who have moved south attracted Wawa to the state, she said. Wawa opened its first Volusia County store June 12 in Port Orange. An Orange City location opened July 2 and a second Port Orange

store was scheduled to open Aug. 6. Each new store employs about 60 people, according to the company. “In general, we are opening 25 stores a year in the state of Florida,” Labik said. Dogs might be man’s best friend. The same can’t be said for cars and dogs, especially during the … dog days of summer. “The best way to prevent a pet from overheating in an unattended vehicle is to leave them at home where they are safe, sound and happy,’’ Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. “Our pets will always enjoy the cool environment of our home much more than they will being left unattended in a hot vehicle.’’ Going for a ride could be fatal for the family dog, even if it only means for an errand or two. “There’s been some research done and, within 10 minutes, the temperature goes up 20 degrees in a car from the outside,’’ said Dr. Ian Birkbeck of Island

Animal Hospital at Viera, who has worked there since the facility opened three years ago. “In 20 minutes, it goes up 30 degrees. That’s independent of the outside temperature. Even if it’s 70 degrees outside, cars trap heat. It can be more than 100 degrees in 20 minutes. People let their guard down when it’s cooler out. The car is never safe.’’ When the temperature lingers in the 90s, as it will almost every day through the end of September in Brevard, that backseat of the car will be around 115 degrees within 10 minutes of the engine being shut off along with the air conditioner. Add another 10 minutes and it could be 145 degrees. Dogs don’t perspire and they can’t pant enough in that temperature to cool off despite an open window. The question for a good

Samaritan is what to do when a dog is found locked in a car. “Often I am asked if it is legal for a citizen to break a window or to enter another’s vehicle in an effort to save a pet’s life,’’ Ivey said. “While there is no Florida Statute that permits citizens to enter into another’s vehicle for the specific purpose to save a pet, the probability that the person trying to save a pet’s life would be charged is minimal since there is no intent to commit a crime. Essentially, to be charged with burglary of a vehicle, a person would have to have intent to commit a crime within. However, in this case, the only intent is to assist in saving a pet that they believe is in a dire emergency.’’ Ivey recommends that people who encounter a distressed dog locked in a vehicle:

The District will hold two public hearings on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 6:00 PM at the Faith Lutheran Church, 5550 Faith Drive, Viera Florida 32955. The purpose of these public hearings is to consider the adoption of the District’s budgets and to determine and levy assessments. The District imposes special assessments each year on the residents’ of the District, the purpose of which is to fund the District’s general administrative and maintenance budget and to provide the funds necessary to pay debt service on outstanding bonds reflected in the District’s debt service and enterprise budgets. Three new types of memberships will be considered at the meeting, along with an increase in the discount for daily fee golf offered to all CDD residents. The Platinum Membership will offer 7-day full access to the course, while the Gold Membership will be for those players seeking only to play Monday - Friday. The third membership will be an Associate Membership, designed for non – CDD residents, and seasonal visitors to the area. In a major move, the board will consider an increase of the discount for daily fee golf offered to all CDD residents, from 10% to 25%. If approved, this discount will eliminate need for CDD residents to purchase an advance greens fee card in order receive a 22% discount. The district operates and maintains drainage facilities, recreational facilities, including the Viera East Golf Club, roadways and other capital improvements. The budget is adopted each year after consideration by the Board and after the holding of a public hearing. This year, as in the past, the District will be collecting the assessments on the Brevard County Tax Bill. Each unit in the District is assigned an assessment per the District’s assessment methodology on file at the offices of the District Manager, Governmental Management Services, located at 135 W. Central Boulevard, Suite 320 Orlando, Florida 32801. The District expects to levy no more than $678.35 per residential unit in Fiscal Year 2016. Please note that you have the right to appear at this public hearing and express any comments or suggestions you may have pertaining to the budget. Copies of the proposed budget are available on the District website at www.vieraeastcdd.com. No copies of the budget will be available at the meetings on August 27, 2015.

Coco had 15 teeth pulled, and Casper had four taken out. It was pretty rough at the time, but now we feel so much better.
