Calving Ease Ratings Bulls denoted with a Calving Ease Gold Standard symbol are recommended for use on heifers. They all rank at the top of the breed for low birth weight and/ or calving ease. Use these bulls with confidence that they will provide calving ease.

These bulls have been used successfully on heifers and all rank well above breed average for low birth weight and/or good calving ease or have strong progeny proof information showcasing excellent calving ease through the commercial sector that haven’t been reflected in the EPD’s. They are excellent choices to be used on both heifers and cows but use on heifers with some caution.

Sexed Semen Symbol & Disclaimer

Due to varying degrees of popularity and the qualifications to import semen to Canada, some bulls may become limited in availability due to high demand.

Homozygous Polled - These bulls have a 99.9% probability of being homozygous polled, having been verified through DNA testing. All calves from these sires will be polled. Heterozygous Polled - These bulls are polled but carry one polled gene and one horned gene, therefore they may sire horned calves when mated to horned cows or other hetero polled cows. Horned - These bulls carry the horned gene and will only produce horned calves when mated to other horned females. Homozygous Black - These bulls have a 99.9% probability of producing all black calves when mated to non-diluted red and black cattle. These bulls have been verified through DNA testing. Heterozygous Black - These sires are black but carry one red gene therefore will produce some red calves when mated to red females. Dilution Genes - Cattle carrying dilution or spotter genes will be grey, red or yellow. Purebred - Purebred is defined as having the blood percentage of the breed at 99.9 % or less and have some influence of blood from another breed.

WW – Weaning Weight

Fleckvieh - Fleckvieh is the German or Austrian term for Simmental. This term is used to describe fullblood cattle that are represented in the Semex program with a high percentage of the pedigree derived from original German or Austrian pedigrees.

M&G or MWWT – Milk & Growth

Full Fleckvieh - Full Fleckvieh cattle are described as having 31/32 of the animals pedigree sourced from Austria or Germany.

The symbol denotes the sire within that breed that will have sexed semen available, however due to a number of factors that affect the production of sexed semen we cannot guarantee availability at all times.
