ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

D

Daytona Beach vacations are known for the three S’s: surfing, sunshine and speed. After you’ve soaked up the sun on 23 miles of spectacular hard-packed sand and dawdled by the pool with a magazine, get ready to step out and have fun. If you crave thrills on the water, Daytona Beach has the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard as well as skim boarding and wind sailing. Afterwards, follow the sound of music along the boardwalk to bistros where dancers sway to the beat long after dark.

Family attractions designed to amuse all ages include the NEW Stingray Touch Pool at the Marine Science Center where you can reach out and touch three types of rays (It’s okay, Their stingers have been removed) as they swim by. Daytona Beach is a top destination for golfers seeking championship courses. Most are within minutes of the beach,

6

including the top-rated links at the LPGA International and courses designed by legends of the game. And our pro shops offer golf workshops at all levels. Manatee Daytona’s popular tour boat, has a totally The Manatee,

NEW look. Painted inside and out, she’s shipshape and

gorgeous! Once you see our natural waterways and bays you’ll understand why the freshwater Intracoastal can be a Zen-like fishing experience. Not far from the beach, you can ramble through forests of tall pines or swim in a natural spring. Whether you’re here on a golf outing or just trying to relax, lighten up, forget your techno-driven world and bike along the beach or the quiet shady roads on the Ormond Beach Scenic Loop. Life is good here in sunny Florida!

DINING

a world of dining choices

W

When shadows lengthen and the sun slowly burnishes the clouds with pink and golden streaks, it’s time to think about where to dine. Dining out can be the best part of your vacation, especially when the meal is served outdoors on a balmy evening. Florida fish, broiled, blackened or sautéed, and fresh caught shrimp, oysters and clams are as healthy as they are delicious. There’s a scrumptious selection, from a late night supper of grilled grouper, paired with sparkling wine, to a basket of crispy, coconut shrimp served on a deck and washed down with a frosty mug of draft beer. Catch the sunrise and the NEW Harbor Breakfast Special, a notable value, served at the Inlet Harbor Restaurant on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s a great way to start the day.

18

If your taste buds crave adventure, we have chefs who specialize in Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish and French cuisine. They take pride in using herbs, fresh Florida fruits and vegetables that can transform a meal into an unforgettable memory. This SEE guide is a great source for the best values and places to eat, even when dressing for dinner requires nothing more formal than shorts and sandals. Whether you eat at a sidewalk café downtown or on a deck overlooking a sleepy river, our restaurants have menus that are designed to please you. When the stars come out, you may be inspired to take a leisurely walk on the boardwalk or the beach. That’s a perfect excuse to have an ice cream cone, hand-dipped chocolates or a slice of key lime pie.

SHOPPING

a shopper’s dream

I

In some ways shopping while on vacation is like a mini adventure, full of surprises every time you open a door or catch a glint of something sparkling through a window. When buying gifts, you may find a special purchase that will become a warmhearted vacation memory. Friendly coastal neighborhoods have revelations on every block. Look for bead and shell jewelry, fragrant candles, and glitzy sandals. Tucked along the way are artsy shops displaying paintings, photographs and other treasures to take home. If you’re in a tropical mood and ready for a change, resort wear is our specialty. Choose fabrics that are cool, softly comfortable and all about ease. Silky, shimmering blends in a subtle palate of colors are flattering at night and enhance your tan! The Sandbox NEW is celebrating their 40th Anniversary! This store is a local favorite for fitting any shape, any body, from size 3 to 60, with the latest in mix-and-match bikinis.

28

Be sure to stop by to congratulate them and ask about their specials. Off the beaten path around town you’ll find consignment boutiques, and in Deland, a NEW hip, recycled furniture shop called NEST with a beer and wine bar. People love to stroll under the palm trees in Historic downtown Daytona Beach where decorative wrought-iron archways add character to art deco and neoclassical architecture. The riverside shops offer antiques, home furnishings and collectibles, art galleries, jewelry, clothiers and several nice cafes where people congregate. On Beach Street you’ll find yummy chocolate treats to take home at the Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory, a landmark here since 1925. Watch the goodies being made the old fashion way, and after the free tour, everybody gets to sample!

New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH

north america’s second oldest city

32

N

New Smyrna Beach is an old coastal town with a stretch of colorfully painted shops, galleries and eateries that give it an inviting bohemian atmosphere. To say the lifestyle is artsy is an understatement. Flagler Avenue merchants have preserved historic buildings along the five-block “main drag” from ocean to river that is famously free of traffic. It’s a paradise for shoppers looking for art and handcrafted collectibles without the crowds you came to escape. Anytime you need a break, stop by NEW A Shore Thing for a slice of pizza or a cheese steak sandwich. And to keep cool when the sun is hot, get the laid-back look of stylish cottons at Gone Bonkers. The beach side of town is bordered by 13 miles of pristine, powder sand, natural dunes and low-rise dwellings. It’s connected to the mainland by only two causeways, and to the south it’s protected by the pristine beaches of the Canaveral National Seashore. New Smyrna is the perfect place to go to enjoy nature, excellent backwater fishing and peering into the ruins of the Turnbull Plantation established in 1767 (it’s the second oldest colony in the state after St. Augustine).

Free-spirited artists have always been drawn to this tight-knit Old Florida community. Exhibitions by prominent Florida artists are offered at the Atlantic Center of the Arts at Harris House, a historic Lutheran parsonage reborn as a community center and art gallery. Downtown on the mainland, explore the Clay Gallery on Riverside Drive for a selection of unique paintings, jewelry and art objects in pottery, wood and glass. Art and collectibles by Florida artists can also be found nearby at Arts on Douglas Fine Art, a unique commercial art gallery located in a district that is a time machine of old-style buildings. Charming seasonal festivals to celebrate music, art and seafood are also reasons to take a trip to New Smyrna Beach. While you’re here, take a tip from the locals, you can always rely on the Grille at Riverview for casual waterfront dining.

3 Day Itinerary DAY ONE: Afternoon Arrival – Welcome to Daytona Beach, a town that really knows how to play. Notice the breeze ruffling the palm trees and take a deep breath of salt air. Feel like you’re in the islands? The Atlantic Ocean stretches as far as you can see. You can imagine Morocco due east on the coast of Africa. Late Afternoon – A brisk swim will get you ready for an evening out. Read SEE Daytona Beach magazine (naturally) and check out the calendar of events so you won’t miss a thing. Early Bird Special – Sunset specials every evening at Inlet Harbor Restaurant are a must-do if you ‘really’ want to watch the sun go down in the west.

DAY TWO: Good Morning – With a good night’s rest, and possibly coffee and a granola bar, you’ll be ready to walk the beach. Beach combers find the best treasures at dawn after a high tide. Mingling – Hang out with the hometown crowd on Saturday morning at the Farmers Market at City Island next to Jackie Robinson Ball Park. Pick up fresh fruit and local offerings to take back to your room. If you’re here on a Thursday afternoon, check out the Ormond Beach Farmers Market. Time to Explore – Take a “Go and Do” shuttle tour with Roni. Rent a Harley. Shop Historic Downtown Daytona Beach; Ormond Beach off Granada; New Smyrna Beach on Flagler Avenue. Wildside Rides – Airboat tours take you deep into marshlands. Try surfing lessons for the fun of it. Loop the Loop – A scenic way to end the day. The Ormond Scenic Loop is a quiet canopied roadway in a environment that is uniquely Florida. Evening Fare – Caribbean Jacks, north of Main Street on the mainland, is where locals gather. Or take a drive to the RiverGrille on the Tomoka River and relax on the deck. For family fun, try nighttime miniature golf at Go Kart City and Congo River. A Moonwalk – on the beach is mesmerizing…not to mention romantic.

DAY THREE: Get up and out on the beach, don’t dawdle. Photograph the sun rising out of the ocean from Ponce Inlet Jetty. The seabirds will pose in the foreground while you compose your shot. At this point you may start planning what you’ll do on your the next trip, but try not to do that. There is more to see NOW before you head home. What is your pleasure? Pick up a souvenir at the beachside shops for your favorite aunt. A real lifeguard hat will impress your buddies and chocolate or salt water taffy will please everyone. Please visit www.See-DaytonaBeach.com and tell us what you like best about our beach town.

Bike Week has rocketed to fame from its humble beginnings on the beach in 1937.

The first motorcycle racecourse was 3.2 miles on hard-packed sand and public roadways with sand-banked turns. That year the winner of the first Daytona 200 averaged 73 mph. After World War II, the nation’s interest in motorcycles expanded. A new beach-road course was lengthened to 4.1 miles. The race moved to the Daytona International Speedway in 1961. During the next two decades, crowds unofficially topped 50,000. But by the 1980s Bike Week was better known for raucous crowds than races. Chamber president George Mirabal and beachside businessman Alan Robertson put together a plan in 1998 that successfully discouraged the troublemakers and welcomed biker fans, which now numbered about 90,000. Today the chrome plated machines are recognized as much for their gleaming beauty as their speed. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts come to show off their bikes and enjoy the races, street festivals and rallies.

The photos on this page and cover were taken by local award winning photographer, Tony Giese. They capture the glitzy chrome and iridescent colors of bikes today.
