The Beauty of Growing Old

“H

ow beautifully leaves grow old,” wrote 19thcentury essayist John Burroughs. “How full of light and color are their last days.” Society doesn’t think highly of old age. Beauty products tout the supposed virtues of maintaining a youthful appearance. Older adults’ wisdom, born of much life experience, is often disparaged, ignored or not sought. But God says this about the righteous, whose lives are rooted in him: “In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap, showing that the LORD is upright” (Psalm 92:14-15, NRSV). The aging leaves of autumn can prompt us to look for beauty in the seniors among us, to notice the light and color that still abound. From all the fruit they still produce — service, prayer, love — may we learn about living faithfully until our own

Parish The Eternal God is My Refuge!

T

he Bible says, “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will thrust out the enemy from before you, and will say, Destroy!” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

On the twenty-ninth day of September 2014, I was sitting on the step of my front door blessing the Lord for His gift of a new heart. I watched the sun setting in the western sky and I thought, “God is Almighty by Himself!” My conclusion was the most beautiful part of the day comes in the cool of the evening, just before twilight. I was awed with the beautiful splendor of the sunset, and here I am alive bathing in the sun after a serious operation. It had been a hot sultry day. Time seemed to move so slowly. As the evening approached, a peaceful silence came across the face of the earth, waiting for the pageantry of the night. Slowly the sun went down, finally out of sight. What cool peace! What wonderful release! But there, for one magnificent moment, was the startling beauty of the day’s afterglow. Indescribable colors created by the sun’s rays, reflecting back upon the clouds, covered the entire western sky. He is everything! I called for my son, Tirrell to assist me back into the house, and while sitting in my favorite chair, I thought of my faith and confidence at this time in my life’s pilgrimage with the Lord. He has been faithful to me, should I do less for Him? The lines in II Timothy 1:7 invaded my thought process; “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Amen.

Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd 3

Black History, Did You Know??? Who Was Known As “Mr. Civil Rights?”

O

n October 2, 1967, “Mr. Civil Rights,” Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993), was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and sworn in as the first African American to serve as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Marshall served from 1967 to 1991 as a Supreme Court Justice.

For 25 years, Justice Marshall had affiliations with the National Association of Colored People (NAACP). He spoke out against discrimination and opposed the death penalty, promoting free speech and civil liberties. Before being appointed as a Supreme Court Justice, Judge Marshall was a lawyer. In 1954, he successfully argued the Brown v. Board of Education, resulting in the decision to end segregation in public schools. The nine Supreme Court Justices voted against school segregation, with Chief Justice Earl Warren writing the response to “separate but equal” stating, “Separate Educational Facilities are inherently unequal.” Justice Marshall retired from the Supreme Court in 1991. - Mercedese Hervey

F

ootball season has begun and many worshippers will be in the stands at any given football stadium across the United States, cheering! Imagine if Jesus came back for His bride during the “Super Bowl!” I wonder how full or empty the stadium would be?

Throughout history, men have worshiped many false gods and today we are no different. Probably, the most popular false god of modern times is the “god of Sports.” Think about the way we raise our children to worship this false god. We spend more time and effort getting them involved and interested in sports then we do in teaching them the Word of God. In essence, we are telling them “this is what’s really important.” Some of us rush around with more excitement and punctualit y to get them to practice and the game than we would ever do to get them to church on time. Not to mention the fact that many Americans are rarely so strict about our children devoting a moment of the day to devotional reading of the Bible. Fact is most families in the U. S. have lives that revolve around their children’s sports programs more than their spiritual life. It would be wise for us to look to God and His Word before we decide how much of our time and allegiance we give this modern “god of Sports.” We must make up our minds about who will really be our God. When Joshua stepped down as the leader of Israel, he challenged the people by declaring, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve … but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 4:15). With love,

Peggy LaBon

Though it would be easy for most listeners to classify Uncle Reece as a Gospel artist because he sings songs about worship; however, the Jacksonville native has already craved his own lane, stating, “I really didn’t fit anywhere, so I quit trying to fit in.” Uncle Reece calls himself the singer/rapper, whose musical style meshes together Gospel, Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae, and Contemporary Christian music. With the release of “BOLD,” Uncle Reece credits his parents for helping him find his niche. He states, “At age 13, I got a chance to see what real Christianity was, and then I got to see the fake. What my parents have is real, and this is why they told me to do what I believe, and I decided not to go.” It would be a few years before he rediscovered his faith.

nswered Prayers TV Series, Roma Downey, will soon share modern-miracles. As the host of “Answered Prayers,” this six part series was set to premiere in July on TLC. Through heart-wrenching interviews, thrilling re-creations, and dramatic real footage, the hour-long episodes will paint vivid portraits of ordinary people who have faced extraordinary circumstances, and miraculously lived to tell them. From a young boy buried under 11 feet of sand for hours, to the horror of a pastor stabbed 37 times and a family that survives their car plunging upside down into an icy river bank. The episodes focus on how each person’s unwavering faith and trust in the power of prayer transformed potentially heartbreaking situations into stories of true inspiration.

Hearing Loss What did you say? Hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the U.S. What’s alarming, now nearly 36 million Americans report they have loss of hearing. When hearing goes, it may affect the quality of life and relationships. Advanced age is the most common cause of hearing loss. One out of three people, age 65-74, has some level of hearing loss. After age 75, that ratio goes up to one out of every two people. Noise wears down hearing if it is loud or continuous. In some workplaces, ears are exposed to dangerous noise levels every day. Even musicians, who literally create music for our ears, are at risk for noise-induced hearing loss. Some wear special earplugs to protect their ears when performing. The earplugs allow them to hear music without harming the ears' inner workings. Certain medications can impair hearing and, or balance. Certain illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes put ears at risk by interfering with the ears' blood supply. Trauma, especially that which involves a skull fracture or punctured eardrum puts ears at serious risk for hearing loss. Infection or ear wax can block ear canals and reduce hearing. At the early stage of hearing loss, high-pitched sounds such as children and female voices, and the “S” and “F” sound become harder to decipher. Other symptoms of hearing loss include:       

Trouble understanding phone conversations, hearing above background noise Trouble following a conversation when more than one person is speaking at once Perception that people are not speaking clearly or mumbling Often misunderstanding what people say and responding inappropriately Often having to ask people to repeat themselves Frequent complaints by others that the TV is too loud Ringing, roaring, or hissing sounds in ears known as tinnitus.

Treatment depends on the type and source of hearing loss. Surgery may reverse some hearing loss caused by disease, scar tissue, or infection. If you think your hearing loss stems from the use of medication, talk your doctor about alternative medicines. Most people with permanent hearing loss can benefit from using a hearing aid, yet only one in five eligible people use them. Other sound-enhancing technologies include personal listening devices that allow you to tune in to what you want to hear and mute other sounds. TV-listening devices make it possible for you to hear the television or radio without turning the volume way up. Different kinds of phone-amplifying devices are available to make conversations possible on home and mobile phones. Finally, cochlear implants are also available, but mainly for young children, but are becoming popular among older adults with profound hearing loss. Prevention is the best ticket to healthy long-term hearing. Wear earplugs when you are exposed to sounds louder than traffic. Lawn mowers, power sanders, vacuums, and most concerts are all loud enough to harm unprotected ears. When possible, move away from the source of the noise. If you work in a noisy workplace, talk to your employer about ear safety. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that employers in noisy plants install barrier walls or mufflers to protect workers' hearing. Hearing loss is often permanent, so do what you can to protect one of your most valuable natural assets. Hearing!!!

TIP (Teens-in-Progress) Ministry The Beauty in Marching Bands By Lauren Dixon

W

hen most people think of marching bands, they think of marching bands that solely play for football teams. But this is not reality. Reality is marching bands are on a whole separate level from what is perceived from the media.

People from different backgrounds and with different ideologies come together as one to show off their talent, skill, and to perform for their audience; themselves included. Marching band is a skill based form of art where performing requires each and every member to participate in practicing the music and the drill that they will perform in front of hundreds of people. The activity itself can be made to look like it is all fun. Not true! Marching band is extremely difficult. But because of the efforts and time members spend practicing, the performances are the best. For this reason, marching band is one of the most beautiful elements of performing arts, because of the cooperation and dedication combined among a group of musicians is beauty. The Ayala Band and Color guard is no exception coming from personal experience. Every member who joins the band not only becomes a better musician, but a better person. Band teaches its members many life skills like gathering information and analyzing it, then applying it to daily life. It also teaches members to become more determined to be greater than what they are and to strive for excellence in all aspects. The Ayala Marching Band has become the home for hundreds of students and adults, and it is an amazing activity to be a part of. Plus, it is an amazing and fantastic performing ensemble to view in person. For those who live in California and are familiar with the Ayala Band and Color guard, or other high schools’ marching bands, listed are a few dates to keep in mind if anyone would like to attend a performance. Dates and Places Listed:  Saturday, October 10, 2015. Vista Murrieta Field Tournament  Saturday, October 17, 2015. Ayala’s Music in Motion held in Chino Hills  Saturday, October 24, 2015. FINANCIAL EDUCATION SERIES Tip #8 Achieving Your Financial Goals from Competitive Edge Education and Business Services: 7. Evaluate Your Insurance Coverage Ensuring that you have adequate insurance coverage is vital to protecting your family and your assets. Key policies to review include health, disability, life, automobile and homeowners insurance. Make a checklist of your policies and the amount of coverage you have. Determine whether changes in your financial and family life warrant adjusting coverage. For example, if you recently started a business in your home, you may need to augment your homeowners insurance to protect equipment or other related items. If you were single (or married to someone else) when you bought your life insurance policy, you may need to update the policy’s beneficiary designation to reflect your new status. And remember to check the beneficiary designations on your retirement and pension plans and update them as necessary—you might still be carrying your ex or your deceased great Aunt Josephine as your beneficiary. Two-income couples should compare the health care coverage their employers provide and decide whether it makes sense to maintain individual coverage or switch—as employee and dependent—to the plan with better benefits Renee C. “Big Ups to SBC Children’s Ministry!”

Dr. J. P. Harris

We look forward to the second Annual Acts of Faith Playoffs coming May 2016! The Annual Acts of Faith Plague will be on display in the G.G Bailey Hall, which includes SBC 2015 AOF Champion Paije Jenkins. Also on the Third Sunday of October 2015, those who participated, as well as the alternates, will receive accolades for their display of Bible Scholarship during the AOF Playoffs! Let’s give a big round of applause to our SBC Children’s Church Ministry……..

Being exposed to: Men fighting wars winning them single handedly with weapons that were not considered effective to fight and win; animals that aided them and spoke the truth to them; granting Nations to Men, inspiring great Architecture to withstand Great Floods; the ability to confront bullies who look like giants; parting large seas to allow the righteous to escape to freedom; the courage to stand up to unbelievable and unfathomable tasks, it is safe to say, if you ask a SBC Children’s Church member to recount their knowledge and understanding of faith, they will have a vast detailed, astute understanding of the power and the realness of the possibilities of faith, just look at our Bishop!

It has been a great opportunity to participate in this activity, teaching and inspiring our youths about the glory of God and how much He loves us. With this activity, our youths have been exposed and have become astute Bible Scholars. In addition, they have become very knowledgeable and aware that they can accomplish anything.

The Children’s Ministry was inspired by the many accounts of faith discussed in the Old Testament because they had experienced this first hand, witnessing their Bishop receiving a new heart transplant which was successful. As Bishop says, “God are good! Because “is” is just too small to describe what he has done for us.

Our Children’s Ministry was very engaged and motivated on the subject of Faith with what they had experienced. So we began our research studying the meaning of faith including, but not limited to, God’s view of those who had faith, examples of faith, and the great miracles enacted because of faith.

The birth of the AOF Playoffs came out of the excitement for our Bishop receiving his new heart transplant successfully. SBC Children’s Ministry was very inspired to accomplish this because our Bishop is our “Miracle on Shamrock.” This excitement led to a Bible lesson on faith (Hebrews 11: 1).

Congratulations to Paije Jenkins our 2015 Acts of Faith Champion! Also, a special thanks to the SBC Children’s Church Ministry Staff and Faculty for your support! Wow! What an event that started in May 2015.

The Finals presented a matchup between Number Three Seed, Kavaugn Leary and Number Four Seed, Paije Jenkins. Both contestants were neck and neck with answering the first set of questions. However, Paije Jenkins jumped out to a three two lead and never looked back.

The children of Second Baptist Church (SBC) should be commended for their efforts and Bible Scholarship displayed during the First Annual Acts of Faith Playoffs (AOF) 2015.

“Thanks to Our Miracle on Shamrock, It’s our Time to Shine!”
