Corinna is located on Maine’s historic Moosehead Trail (Route 7), with thousands of travelers passing through town annually. Only minutes from Interstate 95 in Newport, Corinna offers a recreational destination for travelers and a quiet community for resident commuters to nearby Bangor, Waterville and Augusta. A small town known for its hospitality, Corinna is a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and experience small town peace and tranquility. Corinna offers more reasons for travelers to stop every year. Corinna has a new bandstand which hosts weekly concerts throughout the summer months. Walking the boardwalk, fishing at Corundel Lake and attending the yearly town celebration are popular activities. ATV and snowmobile trails abound and are well maintained and marked for enthusiasts to enjoy. Corinna is also home to interesting historical sites. The town’s library and municipal office are housed at the Levi Stewart building. This building, built in 1898, is a two-story brick structure with a working clock tower and belfry. Dexter is located along Moosehead Trail (Route 7) in the

southwestern portion of Penobscot County, about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. Moosehead Trail takes travelers from Interstate 95 in Newport north toward Dover-Foxcroft and the Moosehead Lake Region and passes through the heart of Dexter’s commercial and recreational districts. Lake Wassookeag, a 1,062 acre lake, named by the Penobscot Indians for “shining water,” borders Dexter’s busy business district. The lake is known for its supply of landlocked salmon, trout and togue, and is a favorite year round fishing spot. Most of the lake is navigable by boat, with the addition of a new boat launch to the Little Wassookeag side of the lake in 2000. The lake also provides the town’s water supply and is subject to several town ordinances to protect water quality. Dexter also offers a municipal 9-hole golf course, driving range, public beach, campgrounds, picnic areas and a small regional airport. Dexter is the original home and namesake of the world famous Dexter Shoe Company. The town is actively involved in economic development focusing on future opportunities for Dexter’s progressive and skilled workforce.

Exeter is an agricultural community bordering Sebasti-

cook Valley in the upper reaches of the Kenduskeag Valley. Exeter proudly boasts having more cows than people! This picturesque farmland still retains its heritage of potato growing, but is building a new reputation as prime dairy land. The town’s showcase farm is Stonyvale Farm (Fogler Farm), which claims a daily milk production of 7,900 gallons a day from its herd of 1800. Stonyvale Farm is also on the forefront of renewable energy and heat production through its use of anaerobic digesters which turn manure and other organic waste into energy. Exeter is also home to Memory Lane Museum, which houses a unique collection of antique vehicles. Enjoy the displays and be transported back in time to experience what life used to be like. Due to its focus on stewardship and innovative farming practices, Exeter should be known as “The Agricultural Center of Penobscot County” for generations to come. For more information on Exeter go to http://townofexetermaine.com

Hartland is located on the edge of Sebasticook Valley’s wilderness, at the outlet to

Great Moose Lake, a beautiful destination for sportsmen and recreational travelers in all seasons. The shores of both Great Moose Lake and of smaller Morrill Pond attract a growing community of four-season and seasonal residents. A public boat launch on Great Moose Drive provides access for fishing and recreational boating. ATV and snowmobile trails offer enthusiasts easy access to the local wilderness. The Irving Tanning Community Center, located alongside the Hartland Consolidated School, is the result of a unique partnership among the school district, the local community and Tasman Leather Group, LLC. This facility is for the use of for both community and school. In addition to the Hartland Consolidated School, Hartland is proud to be home to the recently constructed Somerset Valley Middle School serving grades five through eight. Come to the Valley for Recreation!

The Chamber promotes our diverse recreational opportunities emphasizing the fact that one can enjoy the real Maine without the crowds and traffic……snowmobile, snowshoe, biking, hiking & ATV trails, lakes of all sizes for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, boating, f ishing… or any kind of activity you could want. Bird watching and wildlife viewing are also attractions. Come to the valley and choose your fun!! In order to promote our unique opportunities in the Valley for tourism – quiet recreation and cultural/historic assets - we need to market them and collaborate with others to obtain opportunities and funding sources. In mid-2013, the Chamber’s Strategic Planning Committee held forums with interested parties to brainstorm on how to encourage more business in our area by promoting Recreation, Retirement & Relocation (RRR). The first project to come out of this focus is to develop a recreational trail map. The Chamber teamed up with HealthySV which took the lead as this project fit within their work plan. GPS training sessions were held for community volunteers who would document the locations of the trails. To date, several towns in the Valley have participated. As Pittsfield completed the trail locations first, their trail map is near completion. Each completed town trail map will be posted on the websites of the Chamber, HealthySV and the participating town. The more that we can develop and enhance our marketing campaign to bring more people to the valley for recreational purposes, the more we can support our businesses and communities. is nestled in a valley with a lake and mountains as a photogenic backdrop. The St. Albans Union Church marks the village center.

The town is both a lakeside and farming community. Located between the mountains and Big Indian and Great Moose Lake, St. Albans is an outdoor recreational destination, summer and winter. Public access is available to Big Indian Lake via the Town Landing Road off Route 23. A small park has been established at the lake’s outlet, close to the general store and town hall. The town’s business is conducted from an historic town hall, meticulously restored in recent years to an earlier splendor. Regular community suppers are often held at the historic Grange Hall on the same street. Townspeople celebrate their surroundings annually with Summerfest, “from the mountains to the lakes”… featuring a parade, community meals, a play and games and activities for all ages.

Plymouth, located along Route 7, is home to the Plymouth General Store which serves

today much as it did in the 1800s offering goods, services, and conveniences to residents and travelers. The former Plymouth Grange Hall is the site of traditional and spirited town meetings and has a meeting hall for community and family events. The town hall houses both the office of the town clerk, the selectmen and the U.S. Post Office. For outdoor enjoyment, Plymouth has two ponds within the town limits which offer fishing and boating. Plymouth Pond is a landmark on the Moosehead Trail (Route 7) while Gray Pond, also known as Round Pond, is another popular spot. Both seasonal and year round residents have made their homes along the shores of these ponds. Plymouth Town Office PO Box 130 Plymouth, ME 04969 (207) 257-4646

“In the Middle of Everything That’s Maine”

Stetson is a rural, residential and recreational haven on the edge of Sebasticook Valley. Home to many lifelong residents, it offers respite and recreation for commuters working in neighboring communities and for travelers and vacationers on the shores of Pleasant Lake. The community takes great pride in its local history and natural resources whether at the historic Stetson Meetinghouse, the fish population at Pleasant Lake or the varied wildlife in Goodwin Stream Marsh. The fish population is aided by a new fishway installed by the Maine Department of Marine Resources as part of a long-range effort to restore historic fisheries to the Sebasticook Valley via the Kennebec River. The 1843 meetinghouse is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places and still houses town meetings. The building is rivaled only by the town’s new combined fire station and library, constructed in 1998.

Sebasticook Valley is crisscrossed

move your car for parking, so others can launch after you head onto the water. East Branch of the Sebasticook RiverSebasticook Lake to Corinna To get to the launch site, travel north on Rt7 out of Newport. About 3 miles, turn right on the Old County Rd. Watch for wetlands crossing with parking area on the right. Stay to the right of the channel to access the stream north under the bridge; to the south is Sebasticook Lake. The water shallows but a canoe will pass through the water plants easily enough. The best route upstream is close to the right-hand side of the river, making several inlets accessible.

with lakes and streams with a variety of watercraft experiences available. Our larger lakes offer state-maintained boat launches, watch for the blue signs in Newport, Hartland, Dexter, and St. Albans. Several streams and ponds offer canoe and kayak access for a natural waterway experience complete with an abundance of waterfowl and wildlife, serene photographic opportunities and possible wet-foot portages in low water. Canoe Trails:

Alder Stream in Corinna. 2 hour trip north. From Corinna village, travel east on Rt 222 towards Newport. About ¾ of a mile turn left into a small town park . Enter the water on the right-hand side of the stony beach. The left side is muddy and rocky. It’s possible most of the season to pass under the Exeter Road, about a half hour into a trip north, with another 45 minutes paddling on the upper side before running out of depth for paddling.

Sebasticook River-Peltoma Ave, Pittsfield Find the launch site on Outer Peltoma Ave., off Route 100, in Pittsfield. About 3 miles to the Peltoma Bridge. The launch site and parking area are on the right before crossing the bridge. Leaving the launch, travel upstream under the bridge. A short distance upstream the East and West branches of the river meet. The right-hand channel leads to Detroit. The power lines mark the halfway point upstream. The stream narrows and requires a short portage to continue upstream. Little Indian Pond, 2 hours Travel north from St Albans village on Routes 23/152 for 1 mile. Bear right on the Grant Rd and after a mile and a half,

Corundel Pond, Corinna 2 hours Access to Corundel Pond was hidden for years, after a federal clean-up you can reach the pond, turn onto Corinna’s new Main St and pass the new gazebo. Just past the housing complex bear right and go to the end of the access road. Launch there and

turn right on the Ballard Rd. At the end of the Ballard Rd, turn right on the Ripley Rd and in about 1/10 mile cross the big culvert and you’ll see Little Indian on the left and Big Indian on the right. Park on the left to launch and be sure to leave the launch path open for others by parking up next to the road after unloading.

More information on these identified trips in Sebasticook Valley is available at:dougspalding.com/Paddling/paddlemaine.htm

Madawaska Bog, To reach the bog, turn onto the Madawaska Rd. at the (old) Palmyra Elementary School on Rt 2. The dam and launch site are across from 213 Madawaska Rd, about a mile from Rt 2.

On Maine waterways, please remove any vegetation on your watercraft after leaving the waterway and before launching in a new waterway. Take your personal flotation device, water and snacks enough for the trip, a change of clothing, camera, binoculars, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Plan for weather changes. Enjoy.

West branch of Sebasticook River, Pittsfield: the trip begins at the local Pinnacle Ski Club at the west side of the bridge on Waverly Avenue in Pittsfield. Launch and head upstream, passing beneath the I-95 bridges. The
