2013-14 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2013-14 ALASKA ANCHORAGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

2

L

oaded with four returning starters from last season and a trio of all-conference performers, the 2013-14 Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball squad is hungry for a return to the NCAA Tournament. After barely missing their third straight ‘Big Dance’ with an 18-9 overall mark last year, the Seawolves will feature one of the nation’s top backcourts, led by All-America candidates Kyle Fossman, Teancum Stafford and Travis Thompson. “I’m excited about our four returning starters and two returning redshirts being the core of our group,” said Osborne, who has compiled five NCAA berths and a 175-93 record in nine seasons at the helm. “We have a lot of experience and a lot of options in our backcourt, and I feel this group is very focused on the team concept and sets high goals.” A First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference pick last year, Fossman is one of two players with three years in the Seawolf system, along with Thompson, a junior guard who was Second Team All-GNAC as a sophomore in 2011-12. A 6-foot senior from Haines, Fossman led the Seawolves and ranked seventh in the GNAC with 14.8 points per game as a junior, along with top-5 league ranks in three-pointers per game (2.6), three-point percentage (.445), free-throw percentage (.854) and minutes per game (36.2). A career .457 three-point shooter, Fossman combines with Thompson (.463) to give Osborne two of the top four long-range bombers in program history. Thompson, a 6-1, 195-pounder from Anchorage (Dimond HS), averaged 11.8 points and led the GNAC with .476 three-point shooting and a 2.7-to-1 assistturnover ratio two seasons ago before choosing to redshirt last year. Meanwhile, Stafford burst on the scene with 14.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in his first season after transferring from Snow College, earning Second Team All-GNAC honors as a sophomore. The 6-5, 205-pound swingman averaged 17.7 points over the second half of the GNAC schedule and finished with 22 double-digit scoring efforts. Another Dimond High product, senior guard Colton Lauwers started 26 of 27 games as a junior, posting 6.2 points and 3.4 assists per contest. Osborne calls the 6-3, 215-pounder his ‘utility guy,’ saying he expects to use Lauwers at multiple positions. Not to be forgotten after sitting out a required redshirt year, point guard Brian McGill has the coaches excited about his debut, too. “There were a lot of days last year when Brian was the best player in the gym during practice,” Osborne said of the 6-2, 180-pound transfer from league rival Western Oregon. “He’s a creative, dynamic player who brings a unique skill set to our backcourt. He’s also matured physically since his freshman year.” Pushing the regulars will be junior shooting

Travis Thompson returns from a redshirt season to give UAA three all-conference performers in its 2013-14 lineup.

Sophomore forward Chris an Leckband is UAA’s lone returner in the frontcourt a er logging 22 starts last year.

Junior swingman Teancum Stafford averaged 14.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in his debut season last year. guard Boomer Blossom, who returns to the program after honing his skills at the JC level, and freshman point guard DeVante Baisa, a walk-on who enjoyed a standout prep career in Tracy, Calif. (Kimball HS). Blossom, a Soldotna product who played his freshman season at UAA, averaged 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds at Minnesota State Community & Technical College last year. While the UAA backcourt enters the season as a known commodity, the frontcourt will be the wild card. Sophomore forward Christian Leckband is the only returner who stands 6-6 or taller, although the 6-6, 205-pounder from Nome delivered good numbers of 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and .431 three-point shooting in his rookie campaign, logging 22 starts. “There’s not much depth of experience on the interior,” Osborne said. “We have been pleased with the progress of (junior post) Brad

Mears, who we feel will compete favorably with the best big men in our conference. We’re looking for one or more players to step up and fill that frontcourt position.” Mears, a 6-9, 230-pounder from South Jordan, Utah, comes to Anchorage after a solid two-year career at Snow College, where he was formerly a teammate of Stafford. Joining Mears as newcomers in the post are a pair of freshmen in 6-7, 180-pound Jacob Craft (Sandy, Utah) and 6-7, 205-pound Jackson McTier (Rockhampton, Australia). Craft comes north as an older rookie, having served a 2-year Mormon mission and redshirted at Central Wyoming, while McTier enters as an 18-year-old true freshman. Another recruit, 6-8, 260-pound post Kalidou Diouf, will redshirt for the Seawolves after an all-star prep career his home nation of Germany.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to eight straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tournament appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 164-77 (.680) over the past eight years, including victories over nine Division I teams and 12 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the secondbest winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2011-12 campaign was Osborne’s third with 23 or more victories as UAA produced the Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY in senior center Taylor Rohde. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach-ofthe-Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to the Div. II Final Four for the first time in 20 years. The Seawolves produced a pair of AllAmericans, rising as high as No. 4 in the national poll and earning their first-ever No.

ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 11-year history. Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 71 NCAA Division II top 10 national team finishes in 14 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The 2012-13 academic year was another banner season for the league, highlighted by top-4 NCAA finishes for UAA’s men’s cross country team (3rd), Simon Fraser’s men’s soccer team, and Western Washington’s basketball squads. Along with later additions Montana State Billings (2007) and Simon Fraser (2010), the GNAC is comprised of charter members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In the last six years, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, six NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (including three by UAA), and top-5 NCAA cross country placings by both SPU and

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

T

he Seawolves host their home games on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf basketball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. At Thanksgiving, the Seawolves move their home to the 8,700-seat Sullivan Arena in Midtown Anchorage, where they host the annual Carrs/Safeway. In August 2014, the Seawolves will move into their new home in the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – slated to be the premier NCAA Div. II facility in the nation.

ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.

SEAWOLF ATHLETICS

Nicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country. UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic. Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Seawolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991. In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field. Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented success in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGE W

ith city boundaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 290,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Hundreds of flights arrive daily at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, shuttling about 5 million passengers per year through the heart of one of the world’s top tourism destinations. Anchorage is a recreational paradise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved

and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, it is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. In fact, the Chugach is one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach, Anchorage is located in a relatively temperate zone, with a climate that resembles San Francisco in

STATE OF

ALASKA A

laska is the largest state in the union — one-fifth the size of the contiguous 48 states and more than twice the size of the second largest state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Alaska holds the real title in that department with more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. The 49th State is home to Denali, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Also known as Mt. McKinley, the collosal mountain is located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, located 200 miles north of Anchorage, and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wildlife viewing and colorful wilderness expanses, along with the state’s six other National Parks.

the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 15-20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s comfortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 moose, many often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addition, black bears, grizzlies, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, Dall sheep and bald eagles are just some of the animals that make their homes here while red and king salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.
