2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES VOLLEYBALL

2

F

ollowing back-to-back 21-win seasons and NCAA Tournament first-round berths, Alaska Anchorage volleyball coach Chris Green is eager to see his team take the next step in 2015. Led by a veteran core of four returning starters, the Seawolves have also won at an 83 percent clip in Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches over the past two years, coming just one win shy of sharing the past two league titles. If the Seawolves are to return to the top of the GNAC and make it past the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009, those junior and senior leaders will need to play the biggest roles. Leading the way offensively should be Green’s honorable mention All-America duo of seniors Katelynn Zanders and Julia Mackey, who have combined for 1,818 kills and five All-GNAC awards in their Seawolf careers. “Katelynn and Julia were thrown into the fire as true freshmen and have really grown to become the heart and soul of our program,” said Green, who is 132-66 in his first seven years at UAA. “Their talent ability to provide a threat from either side of the court should keep opposing defenses honest and open things up for our middles to do some damage as well.” Zanders, from South Anchorage High, was an AVCA Second Team All-American as a sophomore in 2013 when she recorded career-best numbers of 3.69 kills per set, .237 hitting, and 2.75 digs per set. Last season the outside hitter was one of just two unanimous all-league selections, ranking fourth in the GNAC in kills per set and second in aces per set. Already with 1,017 career kills, she is just the four player in program history to surpass the 1,000 plateau. Mackey, from West Valley High in Fairbanks, is on track to join the 1,000-kill club and possibly earn her fourth career All-GNAC honor in 2015, having led the Seawolves in kills in all five of their European tour exhibition matches this summer. Playing on the right side, Mackey boasts career stats of 3.08 kills, .259 hitting and 0.58 blocks per set. After playing limited rotations her first two campaigns, Mackey also broke out as an all-around player in 2014, more than doubling her previous digs average to 2.12 per set. The team’s third senior is 5-11 Caitlin Hanson (formerly McInerney), who adds versatility along the front row with her ability to play right-side or middle blocker. The former Western Wyoming transfer saw her first two seasons shortened by injuries, but has the chance for a breakout season in

RIGHT: Junior seƩer Morgan Hooe has helped the Seawolves to a 30-6 GNAC record in her first two seasons. BOTTOM: Senior Julia Mackey is a 3-Ɵme All-GNAC right-side hiƩer and could challenge for AllAmerican honors in 2015.

2015. Hanson has averaged 0.95 blocks per set over her 2-year career. UAA’s two returning juniors are middle blocker Erin Braun and setter Morgan Hooe, who both garnered All-GNAC Honorable Mention awards last year and figure to be among the best players in the West Region at their respective positions. The 2013 GNAC Freshman of the Year, Braun enters her third season as UAA’s No. 2 career leader in attack percentage at .303, and is on pace to challenge the program’s total blocks record with 185 so far. She averaged 1.76 kills per set in her sophomore campaign, delivering at least eight kills in eight of the final 17 matches. Hooe is coming off a strong sophomore season that saw her dish 10.63 assists per set in GNAC play, helping UAA to a 15-3 league mark. The former Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year saved all four of her 50-plus assist performances for nationally ranked foes in 2014 as the Seawolves split six matches against the Top 25. The Seawolves’ final returning letterwinner is sophomore setter Kristi Farley, who shared time with Hooe in 17 matches last year, averaging 3.75 assists per set. The Las Vegas native had her season-high 18

assists in a win over defending NCAA East Region champion LIU Post, and her presence gives Green one of the most talented setting combos during his tenure at UAA. The six veterans will be joined six newcomers, all of whom could play a major role in the Seawolves’ quest for a sixth NCAA Tournament berth in the last seven seasons. Further bolstering a strong front row, two-time Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year Leah Swiss, a 6-0 outside hitter, is back healthy after taking a medical redshirt in 2014. Swiss showed flashes of her potential in three matches as a rookie before sitting out the remainder of the season, and now is joined by former Dimond High School teammate Chrisalyn Johnson, a 5-8 outside hitter who helped the Lynx to consecutive state runner-up finishes. The last addition to the 2015 recruiting class, Utah product Alex Garrett could challenge for playing time at middle blocker after the 6-footer had a quality showing on UAA’s European Tour. The final three newcomers – Alaskans Taylor Noga (East Anch.) and Mikayla Sweet (South Anch./Central Arizona College), and Oregonian Kyla MilitanteAmper – will battle for the libero jersey.

CHRIS GREEN Head Coach • 8th Season

A

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to its unprecedented seventh straight winning season, UAA head coach Chris Green (132-66, .667) continues to establish himself as the most successful coach in program history and one of the top mentors in the NCAA Div. II ranks. A two-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2009, 2013), Green has now led UAA to NCAA Tournament berths in five of the last six seasons, capturing the program’s highest-ever seed with a No. 2 regional ranking in 2014. (In the 28 years before Green’s arrival, the Seawolves made just two NCAAs). UAA has won at a .724 clip for the last two campaigns, including a 26-6 (.813) mark in league play, finishing runner-up by just one match in both 2013 and ‘14. The 2014 campaign saw Green’s Seawolves finish 21-6, establishing school records for best winning percentage (.778) and fewest losses. Sophomore transfer Kayla McGlathery also became the fourth straight Seawolf to earn GNAC Newcomer of the Year and the fifth in his seven seasons. Under Green’s tutelage, the Seawolves have also produced two GNAC Players of the Year (Calli Scott, 2009; Jackie Matthisen, 2011), three All-Americans, two GNAC Freshmen of the Year, nine All-West Region performers and 18 All-GNAC Team honorees. Green’s 2010 and 2011 squads recorded identical 18-9 marks and advanced to the NCAAs, with the 2011 team coming just one win shy of sharing the GNAC title. After being picked to finish seventh in the 2009 GNAC preseason coaches’ poll, UAA wound up winning the league by three full matches, boosted by a school-record 13-match win streak. The Nebraska native earned both the GNAC and NCAA Div. II West Region coach-of-the-year awards as the Seawolves tied for the thenbest winning percentage (.742), posted the second-most victories in program history (23). UAA capped its historic 2009 season by winning its first-ever NCAA match, upsetting Hawaii-Hilo in a 5-set thriller. In 2008, Green took the reins of a Seawolf program that had gone 17-58 over the previous three campaigns and produced a 15-14 mark. The Seawolves captured the title of their own SpringHill Suites Invitational and recorded their first win over a ranked team in almost a decade. Under Green’s guidance, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell also became UAA’s first volleyball All-American. Following four straight NJCAA Final 4 appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from JC to the NCAA Division II level in 2008. He spent the previous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff,

The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Green’s seasons. In his final three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s tutelage, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. In 2011, Green was inducted into the NJCAA’s Hall of Fame (encompassing all sports) for his accomplishments at WNCC. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

Green and the Seawolves celebrated their first GNAC tle in 2009.

In between those stints, Carvalho was the head coach at junior college program Western Texas College from 2010-12, collecting three consecutive 20-win seasons and a 67-40 overall record. Among her other accomplishments, UAA’s career record-holder for assists per set (10.64) piloted her team to the GNAC title and its first-ever NCAA Tournament Second Round berth as a senior. Scott was also the 2008 GNAC Newcomer of the Year and the UAA’s 2009-10 Bill MacKay Athlete of the Year. UAA ADMINISTRATION

2015 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES VOLLEYBALL CHANCELLOR

TOM CASE

T

om Case, Lt. Gen. USAF (Ret.), became chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. Upon completing his Air Force career, he was appointed dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), where he served nearly six years before becoming president and chief operating officer of the state-owned, independently operated Alaska Aerospace

Corporation. Since returning to UAA as Chancellor, Case has focused on helping students succeed in their college goals. In 2011, UAA became one of only 11 universities nationwide to open a VetSuccess program on campus. UAA opened a Veteran’s Resource Center in 2013 to support its growing military and veteran student population. With support from Chancellor funds, UAA established the INNOVATE awards in 2011 to provide an incentive for innovative research. Seawolf Holdings was approved in 2012, establishing a pathway toward the commercialization of UAA research. In February 2013, ZENSOR, LLC became the first startup company incorporated in Alaska based upon research by UAA faculty. A second startup incorporated in June 2013. Currently, UAA has 31 invention disclosures with 12 patents pending. Under Case’s leadership, UAA opened a new Health Sciences Building, the new Alaska Airlines Center, and received funding to complete a new Engineering and Industry Building, slated to open in 2015. Married to his wife Susan for 45 years, they have a daughter Donna, sonin-law Daniel, and three grandchildren. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Case received a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the National War College, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Air War College, and Emory University’s Advanced Management Program. He is an active member of the community, having served on the boards of the Alaska World Affairs Council and World Trade Center Alaska, and is immediate past president of Commonwealth North. He is an avid pilot and, of course, a great Seawolf fan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

KEITH HACKETT

E

ntering his third year as Director of Athletics at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015-16, Keith Hackett has positioned the Seawolves’ 13-sport NCAA program for unprecedented growth and success. Since arriving on Oct. 1, 2013, Hackett has overseen planning and logistics for the department’s transition into the $109 million Alaska Airlines Center – a state-of-the-art sports, community and concert venue that has transformed the UAA campus – along with a major expansion of the Seawolves’ hockey facilities at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Under his leadership, the department has developed a strategic plan that lists priorities, guiding the decision-making process and allowing the department to maintain focus on the Mission of Seawolf Athletics. A university and administrative management executive with 38 years of higher education experience, Hackett values connecting with the Anchorage community and building positive relationships with campus faculty, students, staff and U-Med District partners. In addition to reorganizing the internal management structure of the department, he has also entered into agreements with several national leaders in collegiate brand advancement. Hackett has developed partnerships with industry leader Spectra to manage the Alaska Airlines Center and UAA’s ticketing operations; Learfield Sports – the industry leader in media rights and sponsorships; and its newest partner, Basketball Travelers, to assist UAA in developing the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Hackett has worked closely with corporate partners GCI and Alaska Airlines – and national TV partner CBS Sports Network – to bolster the vitality of UAA’s most visible event, the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. Other important areas that Hackett has targeted include external development, revenue generation, and enhancing the ‘Seawolf Fan Experience.’ Since Hackett’s arrival, over $3.2 million new dollars have been raised for facility projects and Student-Athlete support, total sales revenue has increased yearly by 36 percent, and significant enhancements have been made to the in-game fan experience and the level of service provided to season-ticket holders and Seawolf fans. Along with his behind-the-scenes contributions, UAA’s success in the competitive arena has also been apparent in Hackett’s first two years, with the Seawolf program finishing among the top 12 percent of all NCAA Div. II institutions in the Learfield Director’s Cup both times. All told during his tenure, the Seawolves’ D-II programs have qualified for NCAA postseason competition at a 90 percent rate, producing 42 All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans®, and seven Great Northwest Athletic Conference team titles. Even more impressively, UAA student-athletes have continued their tradition of academic excellence under Hackett’s leadership, combining for better than a 3.15 overall grade-point average in his of his two years at the helm. Hackett came to the Seawolves after working from 2004-13 as the senior associate AD for internal affairs at the University of Nevada, where he oversaw the football, track & field/cross country and baseball programs. Prior to his time in Reno, Hackett served as Executive VP for Special Projects and Director of the St. Gregory’s University College for Working Adults in Tulsa, Okla. He also served as Executive VP and Provost at St. Gregory’s from 1997-2004, and as VP for Admissions and Enrollment Management/Dean of Admissions for Law, Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions at Oklahoma City University from 1992-97. He worked at OCU as Dean of Students from 1986-89. From 1989-92, Hackett was the Associate AD at Northern Illinois University, where he oversaw eight Division I sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. The native of Nanuet, N.Y., began his college coaching and teaching career at Baker University in Baldwin, Kan., where he was head baseball coach from 1978-83 and assistant football coach from 1977-83. From there, he went on to coach offensive line for the football program at Div. I Memphis from 1983-85. Hackett earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tarkio (Mo.) College in 1976 and an M.S. in education from the University of Kansas in 1979. He and his wife Patricia have been married for 39 years and have two adult children, Katie and James.
