R

usty Osborne’s Alaska Anchorage squad is hungry for more postseason success. Coming off consecutive NCAA 2nd Round appearances, the Seawolves will be without the services of now-graduated AllAmerica center Taylor Rohde in 2012-13 as they retake the look of a more traditional Division II club. Luckily, Osborne – in his 9th year as head coach and 22nd overall at UAA – has a number of reliable veterans on his roster, including Second Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference guard Travis Thompson. Thompson, a 6-1 junior from Anchorage’s Dimond High School, averaged 11.8 points, 3.9 assists and shot a GNAC-best .476 from the three-point stripe to help the Seawolves post a 23-7 record last season. The team’s second-leading scorer also paced the league in assist-turnover ratio (2.7) and ranked 4th in FT% (.846) and 5th in assists (3.9). Fellow junior guard Kyle Fossman gives UAA two returning double-digit scorers as the Haines product averaged 10.5 ppg, shooting 46 percent from long range and 84 percent on free throws in a breakout sophomore season. A third Alaska prep product, 6-3 guard Colton Lauwers (Dimond HS) logged 23 starting assignments in his debut season and is another dangerous three-point threat, knocking down 34 treys a year ago. Senior center Liam Gibcus is the program’s lone 4th-year player and will get a chance to prove himself in 2012-13. The 6-10 Aussie has been one of the best shooters in UAA history, nailing 55 percent from the field. After filling a ‘6th man’ role as a junior transfer, senior forward Abebe Demissie also returns, looking to improve on his numbers of 5.9 ppg and 3.2 rpg. “Our returning players are a battle-tested group,” said Osborne. “All five of them have several games of postseason experience, playing in one of toughest leagues and regions in the country. I think we have lots of candidates to step into leadership roles and show a very talented group of freshmen and transfers what it takes to win at this level.” After missing out the 2011-12 season with a broken hand, sophomore forward Christian Leckband also returns for Osborne, having sprouted an inch to 6-7, while adding several pounds to reach 205. Six newcomers enter the fray, including JC transfers Stephan Heard, Mike MacKelvie and Teancum Stafford, and accomplished preps John Erickson, Jalen Little and Collin Spickerman. Heard, a 6-7, 210-pound forward, will be one of the most athletic players in the GNAC, having posted averages of 12.9 points. 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks at Long Beach City

LEFT: All-GNAC 2nd Team guard Travis Thompson has helped UAA into the GNAC Tournament tle game two years in a row. BELOW LEFT: As a sophomore last year, guard Colton Lauwers posted UAA’s lowest turnover rate at just one per 27.1 minutes. BELOW RIGHT: At 42.5 percent from long range in 2011-12, Abebe Demissie was one of three Seawolves among the GNAC’s top 10 in 3FG%.

College as a sophomore last year. Another junior, MacKelvie comes north after posting 10.6 points and 4.4 rebounds for an Eastern Arizona College club that won 21 games. The 6-4 guard originally hails from Oregon, where he was the 2010 Northwest Oregon Conference Player of the Year at Wilsonville. Stafford is coming off a big freshman season at Snow (Utah) College, where he put up 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds after returning from a 3-year absence for a Church mission.

A trio of true freshmen brings championship experience from the prep ranks. Spickerman, a 6-8 forward, was a shotblocking force at Jesuit High School in Portland, helping the Crusaders to a repeat Oregon 6A state title. Little, a point guard from Colorado Springs, led his Sierra High squad within a point of its state title, while Erickson, a 6-4 guard, led Sisters (Ore.) High to a conference title and a 5th-place state finish last spring.

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to seven straight winning seasons — including five NCAA Tournament appearances — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 146-68 (.682) over the past seven years, including victories over seven Division I teams and 12 nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2011-12, Osborne piloted the Seawolves to a 23-7 record — the secondbest winning percentage (.767) in program history — and their second straight NCAA 2nd Round appearance. In fact, UAA is 6-3 in NCAA play in its last three appearances, with two of those losses coming to the eventual national runner-up. The 2011-12 campaign was Osborne’s third with 23 or more victories as UAA produced the Div. II Bulletin National Player of the Year and GNAC POY in senior center Taylor Rohde. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach-ofthe-Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to the Div.

Osborne’s teams have also gained a reputation for defense, leading the GNAC in points allowed in five of his eight seasons. From 1991-2004, Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns’ chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons (1988-91) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. W

ith members in five states and the province of British Columbia, and with a strong presence in or near the largest city of each, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has established itself as one of the top NCAA Division II athletic conferences in the nation during its 11-year history. Founded in 2001, GNAC teams have had a remarkable 62 NCAA Division II top 10 national team finishes in 14 of the 16 sports it sponsors. The 2011-12 academic year was perhaps the conference’s best ever, highlighted by Western Washington’s national title in men’s basketball and Alaska Anchorage’s top-10 NCAA finishes in four sports. Along with newcomers Montana State Billings (2007) and Simon Fraser (2010), the GNAC is comprised of charter members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In the last five years, the GNAC has produced two national team titles (2009 SPU women’s soccer, 2012 WWU men’s basketball), three national runner-up finishes, four NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (including three by UAA), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross country placings by both SPU and UAA.

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

T

he Seawolves host their home games on campus in the 1,000-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans. Along with a refurbished playing surface in 2010, the gym recently received a facelift with the addition of new plastic bleachers to replace the former wooden seats. Seawolf basketball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation. At Thanksgiving, the Seawolves move their home to the 8,700-

2012-13 ALASKA ANCHORAGE MEN’S BASKETBALL Chancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

T

om Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011. A retired 3-star Air Force Lt. General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated Aerospace corporation. The 1969 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam. Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fighter wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command. He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands. After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA. During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in NCAA Div. II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the Final 4. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State.

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 students through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the University’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addiction Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.
