2009-10 ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEASON PREVIEW

W

ith only three returning letterwinners who bring a combined four years of Division II college experience, it might be easy to nay-say the Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team’s chances in 2009-10. Of course, that wouldn’t take into account the high-level talent of those returners, or the impressive resumes of the nine Seawolf newcomers, or the proven winning system of head coach Rusty Osborne. As such, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference coaches paid a bit of respect to the Seawolves by picking them to finish fourth in the nine-team league in their annual preseason poll. UAA received 53 points in the balloting, slightly behind 3rd-place Central Washington and co-favorites Seattle Pacific and Western Washington. “It’s a new team, and we’ll need to gel quickly,” said Osborne, who is 93-57 in his first five seasons at the helm. “Obviously our most experience is in the backcourt, and I’m comfortable that those veterans can ease the newcomers into our system. We are inexperienced in the frontcourt, though, and it’s up to our coaching staff to get them ready to battle at a championship level.” Already battle-tested in the UAA lineup, junior guards Kevin White and Brandon Walker are the proven commodities after making a combined 47 starts in 2008-09. White, one of four Australians on the team, is the only player remaining from UAA’s 2008 Final Four squad. The 6-4 combo guard had a breakout season as a sophomore last year, averaging 8.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and shooting .435 (60-138) from three-point range. Walker brings more of a traditional shooting-guard mentality, looking to slash to the basket or spot up for the three, where he shot .423 (40-104) in his first year after transferring from Div. I Loyola Marymount. Despite his position, the California native is UAA’s leading returning scorer (11.4 ppg) and rebounder (5.7 rpg). Kevin White’s brother, Steve, is the third letterwinner back from last season, having averaged 2.3 points (.511 FG) and 1.3 assists in 27 appearances as a true freshman. UAA also returns one redshirt, and an important one at that. Junior forward Casey Robinson was the Seawolves’ leading scorer (15.0 ppg) after three games last season, but his campaign was cut short in early November by a knee injury. A deadly three-point and free-throw shooter, Robinson was the second-leading scorer at the 2008 NJCAA national tournament, playing for Eastern Wyoming College. Five players join the Seawolf backcourt for the first time, including JC transfers Donnie Lao and Drew Robinson – both Utah natives and former Scenic West Athletic Conference rivals.

RIGHT: Junior Brandon Walker is UAA’s leading returning scorer (11.4 ppg) and rebounder (5.7 rpg). The former D-I transfer had three double-doubles in 2009-10. BELOW: Brothers Steve (left) and Kevin (right) White are two of four Australians on this year’s team.

A natural point guard who can play either backcourt position, Lao averaged 10.8 points and 3.7 assists as a sophomore at Snow College last year, earning All-SWAC second-team honors. Drew Robinson, meanwhile, comes to UAA from Salt Lake CC, where he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 assists and shot 84 percent from the free-throw line for the NJCAA national champions. True freshman guard Bryce Arnott, a 6-1, 200-pounder, played for his native Australia at the FIBA 2009 Under-19 World Championship in New Zealand this summer. In the frontcourt, the Seawolves appear to be slightly short on depth, but may be able to offset that with superior talent. At small forward JC transfer Nick Pacitti brings good size at 6-6, 225 pounds. After picking up basketball in his early 20s, the L.A. native averaged 13 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists as a sophomore at L.A. Trade

Tech JC in 2008-09. Center Malcolm Campbell (6-9, 265) possesses both girth and unlimited, raw talent. The transfer from Div. I Hartford was part of a nationally ranked prep squad at traditional L.A. power Fairfax High School, averaging 11.0 points and 9.0 rebounds for its 2007 CIF Southern Division title squad. The tallest Seawolf this year will be 6-10, 235-pound Liam Gibcus, another Aussie. Osborne is excited about having Gibcus for the next four years, citing both his competitiveness and his knack for understanding the game. Forward Aaron Stevens join the Seawolves as a transfer from Highline (Wash.) CC, where he averaged 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds as a freshman for the NWAAC West Division champs. The 6-8, 200-pounder will be a familiar face to Alaska hoops fans after starring for South Anchorage’s 2008 state title team.

A

fter leading Alaska Anchorage to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2006-08 — including a run to the ’08 Final Four — Rusty Osborne has clearly established himself among the top coaches in both Division II basketball and school history. Under Osborne’s leadership, UAA has gone 82-41 over the past four seasons, including victories over D-I power Southern Illinois and eight nationally ranked D-II teams. In 2007-08, Osborne earned the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach-ofthe-Year award as UAA posted the best record in school history (29-6), won its first GNAC title, and advanced to the Div. II Semifinals for the first time in 20 years. The Seawolves produced a pair of AllAmericans as they rose as high as No. 4 in the national polls and earned their first-ever No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed. In the last four campaigns, Osborne’s teams have finished top 10 in the NCAA Div. II national stats every year in both three-point and free-throw percentage. Last

From 1991-2004, Osborne spent 13 seasons as an assistant with the Seawolves, including 11 years as Charlie Bruns’ chief assistant. The Houston, Texas, native joined the UAA staff after serving under former Seawolf coach Harry Larrabee three seasons (1988-91) at Div. I Southwest Texas State. The Seawolves have won 64 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. As an assistant, he was responsible for the recruitment of five All-Americans, 12 allregion players, 28 all-conference performers and five league Players of the Year. Overall,

Recent Seawolves such as Luke Cooper (14), Carl Arts (34) and McCade Olsen (right) have gone on to play professionally overseas after their UAA careers.

Osborne and the Seawolves cut down their homecourt nets after winning the 2008 NCAA Div. II West Regionals. 17 of his players have gone on to the professional ranks in the United States and abroad, including recent stars such as Carl Arts, Peter Bullock, Kemmy Burgess and Luke Cooper. Since coming to UAA, Osborne has been involved in organizing Seawolf Outreach games in Barrow, Kotzebue, Kenai and Fort Richardson. He is also the director of the Sullivan Arena Jumpshot Basketball Camp and has put on many clinics in rural Alaska. Before moving to the collegiate ranks, Osborne worked for one year as an assistant at Hyde Park Baptist High School in Austin, Texas, helping the Panthers to a 36-8 finish and a state championship. Osborne prepped at Alief-Elsik High in Houston, where he was a two-time alldistrict selection. Collegiately, he lettered his freshman season at Mary Hardin-Baylor, and redshirted at Eastern New Mexico. He and his wife Staci are the parents of five children — sons Sagan, Austin and Kylan, and daughters J.J. and Kadyn.

THE GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE/SEAWOLF FACILITIES

S—

tretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana — and soon to Canada the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most successful league in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC currently features nine institutions – Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington. In 2009-10, the GNAC will become one of the first leagues to

welcome Canadian schools to the NCAA as Simon Fraser University, of Burnaby, British Columbia, will increase league membership to 10. In the last two years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (SPU women’s soccer, 2009), three national runner-up finishes, and three NCAA Final 4 placings (all by the Seawolf basketball teams). UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

DR. STEVE COBB

Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic

department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

MUNICIPALITY OF

ANCHORAGE W

ith city boudaries that stretch to nearly the size of the state of Delaware, more than 275,000 people are lucky to call Anchorage home. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland, and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city (more than four times larger than the second-largest town), an international air crossroads, and the business and cultural center of the state. Almost 300 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational paradise as well, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. In addition, the city sports dozens of

lakes, softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and six scenic golf courses. Chugach State Park is located 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage. With 495,000 acres, Chugach is the third-largest state park in the United States and offers a variety of year-round recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt. Anchorage’s climate resembles that of San Francisco in the summer (highs of 75 degrees) and a Rocky Mountain ski resort in the winter (lows of 20
