Monday August 9th 1869, the proposed list of tolls for the ‘Halfpenny’ bridge accepted by the Saltburn Improvement Company as agreed with Mr J T Wharton on February 15th 1869.


The toll boards stood at both ends of the bridge until the end of its life and read:“This bridge, being Private Property, the public are permitted to use it on payment of the following tolls for each time of passing the Toll collector from 6am to 10pm.

For every person not being in charge of a Horse or Vehicle One halfpenny For every saddle or led Horse, Mule or Donkey 1d For every carriage drawn by One Horse 2d do do Two Horses 3d do do Four Horses 6d Every Cart or Wagon drawn by One Horse 2d do do Two Horses 3d do do Three Horses 4d For every Cycle or Perambulator 1d No vehicle carrying more than Two Tons at one load will be permitted to pass over this Bridge.
