SD Mines men's hoopswell balancedheading into season

RAPID CITY —- The South Dakota Schoolof Mines men's basketball team hashigh hopes heading into the 2009-10 hoops season Pretty much the same high hopes that the Hardrockers and fifth-year head coach Jason Henry have every year

"Our expectations are simple/' Henry said "We want to be competitive night after night and end up in the Top 4 of the Dakota Athletic Conferenceheading into playoffs so we can have a first-round home game."

The goals are simple and to the point After a strong showing last year in which the Hardrockersmade the Top 25 NAIA Coaches' Poll, tied a school record for consecutive wins with 11 andfinished tied for fourth in the conference and made a run to the semifinals, SD Mines is poised for even more success this time out, with askilled lineup filled with experienced veterans and talented newcomers

Gone from the team are seniors Brandon Smith, Donny DeGooyer and Kyle Kurth Smith, a starter, was named DACSenior Player of the Year and DeGooyer started all seasonaswell Kurth provided a good sparkto the team and provided quality minutes as an upperclassman

This year's version looks even stronger with three seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen

"We will definitely have strength in numbers again," Henry said "This year we hope and expect some guys to really step up their games and play the majority of the minutes But we also have a solid bench and we are able to go asfar as 10 or 11 deep if needed."

Topping out the senior class isfour-year starter Robbie Fedor The 6-foot-l-inch guard knows the ins and outs of the team which iswhy he isthe captain and leader of the squad Lastyear, Fedor was the team's second leading scorer averaging 12 points a

game He is also closeto joining the 1,000-point club

Carl Johnson (center) is another senior that Henry expects a lot out of this year and at 6-10 and 240 pounds, it's easyto seewhy Johnsontransferred in as ajunior and after a year of learning the system should be ready to go Hedid suffer afoot injury in the off-season which may limit him in the early goings, but accordingto Henry, Johnsonis rehabilitating nicely Johnson averaged 4 rebounds a game last year and just under 10 points eachtime out

The final senior is Kyle Turpin, a 6-6 forward with a lot of athletic ability It took Turpin some time to adjust to a new system, but with ayear under his belt, Henry feels Turpin will have a break-out year

The junior class is led by DACAll-Conference first teamer A.J Trennepohl who is a 6-3 guard and deadly accuratefrom the perimeter Trennepohl was the Hardrockers' leading scorer in 2008-09 averaging 12.3 points a game and shot over 50 percent from the three-point line Hewill also breach 1,000 points in his SD Mines career and is a threat whenever he has the ball

Junior Kaleb Rehmer (6-5 forward) has been with the team for two full years and is a real asset to the program Henry said he outworks everyone on the floor and haslots of energy when he gets in the game

Junior Scott May (6-3 guard) is a two-year starter that hasspent time asthe point guard Henry now plans to play him at the off-guard spot aswell Starting as a freshman and running the offense has given May good basketball vision, distributing the ball to the open player on the court He led the team in assistslast year with 89 and was the team's best defender

New this year asa transfer from Minnesota isjunior Trevor Larson, a 6-5 forward from Rochester Community College Henry said Larson is a hardnosed player that isn't afraid to stick his body in there and could have one or two chargesa contest

23

He will make a great teammate but will take some time to learn the system aswill all newplayers

Junior JordanSchmitz rounds out the upperclassmen as a 6-5 forward Henry said Schmitz has had a great off-season and is becoming a good mid-range shooter Schmitz also adds experience and depth to the roster which is sure to pay off this season

Looking at the sophomore class, Nate Jacobson returns to the lineup after a mid-season shoulder injury that required surgery He started asa freshman and will be looked to asasophomore to step up hisgame Henry hopes he will continue to increase his leadership role

Another transfer issophomore Kyle Doerr, who was Jacobson's teammate in high school at St Thomas More Doerr is a 6-7 forward that also possesses a good touch around the basket and is also a strong athlete that can rebound

Tommy Smith is a player that is a threat with the ball Henry saidthat Smith has an explosive first step that allows him to quickly drive to the hoop If the 61 guard candothat consistently, hewill seealot of action this season

After spending two years on the bench (redshirted hisfirst year and suffering season-ending back injury as freshman) Friesen, a 6-6 guard, is ready and willingto contribute to the Hardrockers this year.He is one of the best shooters on the team and isable to play a couple of different positions for the 'Rockers

Add sophomore Cameron Cale (6-3 guard) and freshmen Lance Kilburn (6-4 guard), Jake Miller (6-4 guard) and Blake McPherson (6-6 forward) to the mix and the Hardrockershave a talented and well balanced roster

The Hardrockershave had a strong outside game the past couple of seasons with Trennepohl and Fedor hitting shots from around the arch andthat doesn't appear to have changed asthis season gets started

"We have two of the Top 3-point shooters in the country headed into the season," Henry said."Our point guard play hasvastly improved over the last couple years."

With the addition of some height and mass under the basket, the Hardrockers become a little bit harder to handle

"Our overall depth is a good thing, especiallyat the 'big-man spots' with two of those (players) being seniors," Henry said." And our experience in general is a positive We were a little young last year and had some growing painsat times."

SD Mines has a fairly tough schedulethisseason, taking on talented teams not only in the DAC,but also in other divisions asthe Hardrockershave bouts with four NCAA Div. IIschools.

"I am a little concernedabout our overall athleticism which I am concerned about every year," Henry said "We play so many teams that are going to be more athletic than we are We need to makesure that we rebound fundamentally andthat we just become better rebounders in general.

Looking at the conference, Black Hills State was picked to repeat asthe top team, while the Hardrockers were picked to finish fourth with Minot State and Jamestownjust a head of them

"The Yellow Jackets are obviously the team to beat," Henry said "But after that it's pretty wide open I hope to have the Hardrockersin the mix of the Top4 and make a run throughout the playoffs

"We just have to make sure we are the hardest working team in the conference, play smart and keep improving on a daily basis Hopefully we will have a chancewhen it's all said and done."
