From The Board of Directors

Our MISSION as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents. Board Of Directors - Article

Steve Taillie tailliesteve.scov@gmail.com Sun City Oro Valley Clubs by Steve Taillie

This month I would like to talk about SCOV’s clubs. Currently there are over 120 active clubs and groups in SCOV. We have everything from Astronomy to Vistoso Helpful Hands. When Judy and I first moved into SCOV, we had no idea that there were so many options. Initially, we joined four or five different clubs and, within six to nine months we narrowed them down to two or three that we were truly interested in. There is something here in SCOV for everybody, and if you have an interest in something that others might like that is not listed in the Tipster, you may start another club. Many clubs offer instructional classes for beginners such as stained glass, silversmith or woodworking. In addition, SCOV also offers a number of educational venues. Examples include computer techniques, retirement options, southwest travel, tax assistance and ILR (Institute of Learning in Retirement) to name a few. If cards or games are of interest to you, there are clubs that offer not only instruction but within the club there are groups of different levels of expertise as you sharpen your skills. And let’s not forget our award-winning golf course. Whether you are a duffer or an experienced player, or just beginning to learn to play, there is always room for improvement. What a beautiful place to play!

What we have all been calling the Café for several years has a new name; The Views Restaurant. There were a few motivators for changing the name, yet the primary reason was to emphasize the expansion of offerings from a focus on breakfast/ lunch to include Happy Hour and special dinners, plus improvements in service and food quality. Of course, the above-noted motivators are combined with the restaurant renovation/expansion. When the project is completed, the restaurant facility will include a lounge with a large built-in bar and a beautiful covered patio with a fireplace. There will be sliding doors between the restaurant and lounge, plus folding doors and windows between the lounge and patio. During days when the weather is pleasant, which is often in Oro Valley, these windows and doors will be open creating an expansive, open area for all to enjoy. The end result of this project will be more than a doubling of the current capacity. With that increased capacity, the goal will be to create a fun, sociable environment that will attract considerably more residents and individuals who live in the nearby areas. In order to attract more of our residents to frequent The Views Restaurant, an effort will be made to determine what will encourage them to stop by for a meal, snack or drink. There’s no doubt that when the project is complete, which should be in June, it will be a very impressive facility for our current residents, potential home buyers and nearby neighbors. Although the “bones” will be excellent, the most important factor is that the food, drinks and atmosphere meet the expectations of our residents and guests.

Heroes Among Us Award By Don Coleman, President SCOV Board of Directors Photo By Steve Taillie

The Board of Directors is most honored to recognize this year’s recipients of the Hero’s Among Us Award, Lei and Gene Bammel both have worked diligently for almost 20 years to improve our community and to enrich the intellectual lives of our active adult community. The Bammels moved to Sun City in May, 1997 after retiring from West Virginia University as Tenured Full Professors.

In 2002 Gene formed a board and offered the first ILR (Institute of Learning in Retirement) courses in the fall of 2003. Over the years, membership has grown from about 90 that first year to over 800. Likewise, the number of courses have increased from six a year to 30 or more. Between the two of them, they have served 26 years on the club’s board in various positions with one of them as President for seven. In addition to continuously serving as officers, they have taught over 45 courses. Gene also writes a weekly Philosophical Review. In 2015, the ILR contributed $16,000 to the SCOV Library for renovation, equipment, and materials. The ILR has also allocated up to $18,000 to SCOV for audio and visual renovations at Catalina Vista. The club also

rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 917-8070 Use of the Golf Course by Non-Golfers

At SCOV, we provide a unique benefit by allowing walkers the enjoyment of our golf course during posted hours. Residents may walk meandering pathways through lush green grass, enjoying the beautiful landscape and wildlife along with the stunning mountain views. Our golf course provides important income with fees paid by annual pass holders and daily golfers. Their use of the golf course is essential. All who walk the golf course should understand how to make this a win win situation for both the golfer and the walker. Posted walking hours provide ample opportunity for walkers to enjoy the course. If there are still golfers on the course during those times, it is important to follow walker etiquette so they can finish their game. The Board has developed a policy to assist with understanding the requirements for walkers on the course. Please familiarize yourself with Board Policy: Golf Course – Pedestrians (GLF 003) which is on the SCOV website. When golfers are teeing off, stop behind them, stand quietly and allow each of them to tee off. If you are walking the pathways and golfers are on the fairway, they cannot take a shot if there is any chance of hitting you. Please try to move quickly to get out of their range. The Hiking Club offers three to six mile guide-led golf course hikes on Tuesdays. Check out their website for additional information. Enjoy this amenity, but be an informed golf course walker.

has established an outreach program. Over $7,000 has gone to support various Tucson or Pima County educational programs such as Tucson YOTO (Youth on Their Own) and the Thunderbird Resource Center at Painted Sky Elementary. Lei is currently in her third year as president of the Stained and Fused Glass Club where she also teaches various classes and workshops. In earlier years she had also been president of the Clay Club and the Table Tennis Club. In 2005 Gene and Lei represented SCOV and Arizona at the National Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh, PA. She and Leslie Esparza won Bronze medals for women’s doubles, and both Bammels placed in the top seven or eight in two other events. She has also been an officer in the Tucson Native American Flute Circle. Join the Board of Directors in congratulating the Bammels for some justly-deserved recognition.

psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 917-8077 More Construction

The Administration does everything possible to make SCOV a better place for residents to live and enjoy and keep up-to-date with other communities in the area. The new Pro Shop is being well received and the construction of the new terrace and enlargement of the previous Café will be something that the entire community will enjoy and profit from. I realize that changes are bothersome to most people but learning to accept them will make life easier. There will always be changes in your personal life as well as the community. Always look ahead about anything to see how the change will improve your future. Community Services - Katy Mosier

February showed a 10% increase in library usage even though it was a short month. Patron visit statistics totaled 2,355. This figure includes a growing number of patrons who sign into the library from home. It’s exciting to hear from residents how much they appreciate being able to place books and movies on reserve from home, and we feel the love when they show up at the library ten minutes after the automatic email was sent notifying them that their item is ready for pickup. Many Academy Award-winning films have arrived, including: Room (Best Actress Brie Larson), Spotlight (Best Picture), Inside Out (Animated Feature), The Big Short (Adapted Screenplay), The Hateful Eight (Score) and Ex Machina (Visual Effects). Other new arrivals: Treachery at Lancaster Gate by Anne Perry, in fiction; The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin, in large print and Cometh the Hour by Jeffrey Archer, in audio.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis

ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 917-8073 Ten Minutes of Exercise

Daily exercise is ideal, whether you are doing some yoga, push ups, jogging or really any type of physical activity that challenges your body. Given how much the average person sits each day, daily exercise becomes even more important. Consider creating a simple 10-minute morning routine of exercises like push ups, bodyweight squat and dynamic stretches. It can be a game changer for you if you have trouble with consistency, or only workout a couple times per week. My bet is, you will notice results in just a few days as your strength, energy and flexibility improve.

Association-Sponsored Fitness

Purchase a punch card from the receptionist at the Administration Office in the Welcome Center, $20/10 classes. You may use this card for all SCOV-sponsored fitness classes. It can also be used for your guests. There is $3 drop-in charge if you do not have a punch card.

Have you ever had back pain? Who hasn’t? If so, come to a presentation called Spine Health As We Age on Friday, April 15, 1 PM, Auditorium. See Coming Events for details. This is our last presentation for this season. We are beginning the planning for 2016-2017 and would appreciate any ideas for topics. Our goals for these presentations are that they are research-based, focused on keeping us active and healthy, support a holistic body, mind, spirit, approach to health and not of a commercial nature. Feel free to email the chair or contact any other committee member with your ideas. AFC Advisory Committee

Chair Michael Takerian 520-256-3213 michaeltakerian@gmail.com First Wednesday, 11:30 AM, WC1 afc@suncityorovalley.com

The committee wants to remind all residents and guests that before you enter the Fitness Center or Pool area, you must scan your facilities access card or fob. This is a requirement of our community. If you have family members or guest(s) joining you, they are to be registered at the monitor’s desk. Upon scanning, encourage those behind you to do the same. Allowing others to enter without scanning may cause a security risk. On another important note, please remember to stay hydrated during your activities. Water is still the best hydrator. As always, we look forward to your comments. Just fill out a comment card and place it in the suggestion box in the lobby, or email us. Architectural Review

Chair Lou Gard 520-825-4773 lougard@q.com Second and Fourth Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3

Are You Thinking of Putting Your Home Up For Sale? If so, why not contact the ACT (Architectural Compliance Team), a subcommittee of the ARC (Architectual Review Committee). ACT will come to your home to do an evaluation to insure it meets the existing Development Standards. If there are any violations you, as the home owner, can make corrections prior to putting your home on the market. Remember, this evaluation will need to be done at some time so why not get it done prior to a pending sale when it goes into escrow. If you wait until escrow and there are violations, the sale of your home may be held up or you may need to negotiate with the prospective buyer, to who resolves the issue. Contact Katy Mosier, the Community Services Coordinator, at 917-8058 and she will arrange for an ACT representative to do the evaluation. If you are a neighbor or friend of someone putting their home up for sale, remind them of this service. Consumer Referral - Vendor List

Whether you crave classic favorites, ethnic dishes or vegetarian options, The Views Restaurant provides all the fresh ingredients necessary to make your dining experience a pleasant one. The way foods taste drives us to eat particular foods time and time again. We are all increasingly aware that what we eat directly affects our health. Our outstanding staff is ready to answer any questions you may have regarding preparation. A big thank you to the volunteer greeters. Your assistance with special dinners, Happy Hours and Sunday Brunch has been outstanding. Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library thank those of you who purchased a ticket to the Books and Authors’ Luncheon. We had enjoyable and informative presentations from Margaret Coel and Lynne Cullen. The money raised will go a long way to help fund our library. Is your membership in the Friends of the Library up to date? If you are not sure, ask the volunteers behind the desk. Since the computerized system became active on July 31, 2015, and through February 16 of this year, 1,000 audio books and 5,000 DVDs have been checked out; 16,224 items checked in and 17,158 items have been checked out. In the month of January alone there were 2,300 patron visits. What a fantastic use of our library. Be sure to bring your winter visitors in to see all the materials that are available. Did you know the library has children’s books and DVDs?

Loan Room - Community Assistance

Chair Gay Russell 825-5763 Tuesday and Thursday reservations and pickup 8-9 AM Meeting Third Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The Loan Room is a great place to find needed items such as rollaway beds, cots, tables and chairs, children’s and medical items that you only need for a short time and don’t want to purchase. Medical items are loaned for two months and most other items are for loans of two weeks. The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM, for reservations and pickup. You may reserve items up to two months in advance. We do not have a telephone reservation system at this time. Please come and see what we have in our store. On March 1 we delivered 460 pounds of cans to the recycling center; we received $184, which brings our year-to-date total to $1,008 for the Loan Room-Community Assistance Committee. Marketing and Publicity

Barbara Ross 818-0701 bfgnye@gmail.com Fourth Thursday, 3 PM, WC1

The Marketing Committee continues to explore new and additional avenues for two-way communications with SCOV residents with the goal of building a strong culture of trust, respect and credibility. Members of the committee and other volunteers have written monthly articles for the Tipster (Page 4) for the past two years, celebrating the active lifestyle of SCOV residents. The first article was published in April 2014 and we continue with the Page 4 articles. We will meet April 28. Neighborhood Pride

Chair Tempe Johnson 825-6994 Third Tuesday, 2 PM, WC3 Once Again – Spring

We got rain showers early this year along with exceptionally warm temperatures in February. Because of those showers and warm temperatures, spring came early, and weeds are popping up everywhere. When weeds are small, they are easy to remove. It is time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus or flowers. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they bloom, at which time they need to be removed. Please trim any trees or shrubs which overhang the sidewalk or street. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards, no matter how cute they may be. Winter residents need their yards maintained during the summer months, so the home looks cared for while it’s empty. Be sure to notify Administration of your summer mailing and current email address, in case they need to reach you while you are away. Please continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice when you return as when you left. Posse

Golf Head Golf Professional - Kim Griggs

kgriggs@theviewsgolfclub.com 917-8053

We have noticed a lot of cigarette butts on the course and in the parking lot areas; be courteous and deposit your cigarettes into your own ashtrays, or the receptacles that are provided for you. We would like to keep the golf course and community as clean and beautiful as possible. If you haven’t already, stop by our brand new fully-stocked Pro Shop and check out our wide variety of merchandise: golf balls, men’s and women’s clothing, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats for protection from the sun, golf shoes, and more. Annual pass holders receive 30% off and residents receive 15% off (excludes sale items, equipment and golf balls). Since the weather is nicer and the days are longer, if you are a walker or a person driving your golf car on the golf course enjoying the views there will be golfers still out on the golf course. Please yield to the golfers and then proceed after they have hit their shots. We have walking hours posted, and we ask that you abide by those specific hours. This is not only for your safety, but for the golfers to enjoy their paid round of golf. Thank you for your cooperation. Rick Sample and I are available to provide lessons. The cost is $45 for 30 minutes and $55 for 45 minutes. We are both Class A PGA professionals with a lot of teaching experience. Our ball machine has been moved near the driving range. You may buy range tokens in the pro shop. They are $5 for a small basket (approximately 25 balls) and $7 for a large basket (approximately 50 balls). Our driving range dress code is the same as it is for playing the course: a collared shirt is required, no denim, no gym shorts, no swim suits or flip flops.

Golf for the Cure 2016 10

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011

Superintendent - Michael Kropf

scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 917-8063

April is the time of year when the golf course transitions from overseeded winter rye grass to underlying Bermuda grass. The goal is to minimize the impact of rye grass on Bermuda grass and improve golf course conditions in spring and early summer. Last fall during the fairway overseeding, we reduced the seed rate of the rye grass. This reduces competition between the two grasses. With less competition the underlying Bermuda grass has better access to sunlight, moisture and nutrients over the winter months. The fairway conditions were very acceptable during the winter months, so the reduced rate of seed did not impact playability. With the mild weather the Bermuda grass has already started to come out of dormancy, and the fairways are becoming greener and thicker as the weather warms. This year the rye grass will be chemically eliminated over a longer period of time with a mixture of chemicals. Instead of spraying a chemical in one or two applications in late May as in previous years, we will spray one type of chemical in late March and mid-April, then another chemical in mid-May. This should reduce the negative impact of brown and dead fairways in late May, while allowing the underlying Bermuda grass a chance to start growing earlier in the summer. Overall, the golf course should have better playing conditions in early summer. Any areas that still need repair will be done in June, so the course can get back to good conditions more quickly. Golf Advisory

Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 First Wednesday, 2 PM, WC3

It has been a busy spring for the Golf Advisory Committee. We have developed recommendations for improving The Views Golf Club to provide input to the annual budgeting process for the community. The most significant recommended change is modifying the fairway grass bunkers on Hole #4. This change will be reviewed by a golf course architect prior to the work being performed by the crew this summer. Looking forward, many of our residents will be departing, for the summer. My term as chair of the committee is almost over. I want to thank those who have served with me for all of the hard work that was put into making the committee an

Pres. Vernon Barr 395-0525 Membership John Rowe 651-325-8122 Play Wednesday

We are winding down the spring golf season. We have a new Club Champion, the Views Cup is done, and the premier men’s event (Member/Guest Tournament) is about to begin. There is still time to sign up if you haven’t done so. We start play this month with a two-man scramble, followed by the Member/Guest Tournament. April 20 we will have our Patriot Scramble followed by our last Bash of the spring. The new board members will be introduced replacing board members Vern Barr, Dave Hablewitz and Sam Phillips. We thank them for their hard work and efforts for the men’s club. We finish the month with a two-man scramble. This time of the year we start to say our good-byes to those heading back north for the summer. They will be missed, but there is still golf to be played. Have a great summer. The Views Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club Pres. Jim Mitchell 818-2893 Membership David Chatterton 520-204-5636 Play Thursday The annual Guys and Dolls golf event was held on February 25, this year hosted by the Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club. A total of 49 members of the 9-Hole Women’s Golf Club and 34 members of the Men’s Nine-Hole Golf Club, along with one guest, participated. The competition was a team game with each team having members from both clubs. Each player played their own ball with the two low net scores of each hole for the foursome being added together to make the team score. Four places were paid for both the front and back nine holes. Following golf was a catered meal provided by The Views Restaurant along with a raffle and the awarding of prizes. Fifty percent of the money raised by the raffle went to Cure For Cancer. The Men’s Nine-Hole Club Tournament started March 24 and continues on four consecutive Thursdays. The results of that event will be in an upcoming article. This month’s golf quote comes from an anonymous source, “Golf is an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.” The Views Women’s Golf Club

Trouble-free Computer Presentations in SCOV Meeting Rooms

SCOV has many meeting rooms equipped with digital projectors and large screens. Our building monitors set up the rooms to be ready for your presentation, but you are responsible for ensuring that your computer will connect to the projector and speak its language. All SCOV audio-visual systems connect to computers by means of either standardsize HDMI or VGA connectors. Most flat-screen TVs also have these connectors, so you can easily try your connection and practice your presentation at home. If your computer does not have the correct size or type of connection, you are responsible for providing whatever type of cable or adapter is required. Different computer brands and models have different ways of connecting to the second screen that the projector (or your TV) represents. Before heading for the meeting room: • Try your presentation at home using your TV. • Be sure to bring any necessary adapters to connect to standard HDMI or VGA. • Set your computer to Airplane Mode or turn off WiFi, so it won’t accidentally try to update during your talk.

It’s hard to believe we’re in our last, full complement month of painting here in our studio. Come and view the fine works on display. Our members collectively would like to thank our president, Mellanie Herbert, for all the hard work she does for our club each year. She keeps the club affairs on track, organizes artwork hanging, stimulates us to produce our best works and is just a pleasant and resourceful person. Kudos to you, Mellanie.

People are frequently interested in learning the laws and regulations about carrying a gun, what is required to obtain an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit and our local shooting range. Club members are encouraged to bring any new or interesting guns/accessories to the meeting for people to see or any guns they want to sell/ trade. At some meetings, we have guest speakers from law enforcement or other gun related organizations. Hand and Foot

A recent hike included a closeup view of the wildlife tunnel recently completed as part of the Oracle Road widening project. Unfortunately, our club members did not spot any wildlife during their brief visit. On March 26, we enjoyed the annual meeting, our last social gathering of the season. A brief business meeting followed our guest speaker from the Desert Museum, whose topic was From Hawks to Hummingbirds. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments ended the event on a festive note. Our sincere gratitude goes to Jim Brandl as well as his very capable committee for planning and presenting this event. Our best wishes to those who will be leaving for the season. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. We look forward to your return. Horseshoes

Mark your calendars for the big event of the SCOV Pickleball Club spring season: the spring meeting and social gathering on Thursday, April 7, 5 PM, Activity Center/Kiva Patio. The board scheduled this event earlier than usual this year, in the hope that more of our pickleball-playing seasonal residents can attend. All club members and spouses are invited to this potluck party. As the days get longer and the sun gets hotter, pickleball under the lights becomes an increasingly appealing option. Evening play takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 PM. All members are welcome. To register to get updates and advisories, contact Al Womac, biggdawg46@hotmail.com. Pilates

The Joseph Pilates system of exercises has never been in such high demand. His exercises have been around now for 40 years. Fortunately, Sun City offers the Joseph Pilates classes here twice per week. People ask, “Can the benefits of this Pilates method, which come from the strengthening and stretching exercises we do, really develop the body’s core (abdomen and back muscles), increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a definite “Yes.” Additional benefits you’ll see from taking our group mat classes will include better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. We have two instructors who are both very experienced in the Joseph Pilates system. The cost is only $8/class and the annual club dues are $20 pp. Please feel free to stop by and watch one of our classes. Contact Mary Ayers. Pinochle

Water Volleyball players are anxious to see the upgrade to the Desert Oasis pool completed. Club leaders purchased a new super light water volleyball to try on non-competitive days. Much easier on the fingers, but plays well. Highlands water volleyball club uses this type of volleyball. In March, Highlands of Dove Mountain hosted SCOV for a friendly water volleyball competition. Planning is in progress for SCOV to host Highlands this fall. Wallyball players may see some water volleyball players practicing serves in the racquetball court, keeping up the skills and improving for play on competitive days.
