SPEAKING THE TRUTH WITH CONVICTION AND CLARITY R. ALBERT MOHLER JR. PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN B A P T I ST T H E O LO G I C A L S E M I N A RY

The gospel ministry has always had challenges; just look at the lives of the apostles. There’s no reason to think those challenges will go anywhere soon. Those who minister in the name of Jesus Christ will face every one of those challenges, and then some new ones. Today’s pastors, missionaries and Christian leaders will be witnesses to one of the most comprehensive and fast-paced moral revolutions ever experienced by humanity. The velocity and breadth of this revolution are breathtaking, and the consequences are yet incalculable. This society is dismantling the very structures that have allowed for the enjoyment and preservation of human liberty and respect for life. We cannot pretend that this is not happening. We cannot delude ourselves into believing that it will not matter. Many of these new challenges will come with an invitation, or perhaps a demand, that the Christian leader compromise his convictions and join the moral revolution. This kind of compromise is precisely what biblical Christians cannot do. When the opportunity comes to compromise what Scripture says, the Christian minister must speak truthfully and lovingly to a society that increasingly sees us as the moral outlaws. But abandoning the truth of God’s Word is not an option. This holds true for individual Christians, and it also holds true for theological institutions. From 1859 forward, Southern Seminary has said, “Here are our convictions. This is what we believe, and this is what we teach.” Through all the convictions that we so boldly hold before the world, we make a statement publicly and permanently about what it is that we believe; and we make no plans to amend those convictions. As a theological institution, we must be relentless about the task of training this generation of gospel ministers to stand firm as ambassadors of the gospel, preaching it in churches and taking it to the ends of the earth. And we must be steadfast in training these ministers and missionaries to preach the gospel with conviction, not shying away from declaring the whole counsel of God. We know what kind of world it is into which we send our graduates, and we are aware of the demands the world will make on them, but Southern Seminary will go to whatever lengths needed to make sure that this generation of Christian ministers and missionaries is prepared.

VISION

The gospel in life See the gospel come to life as you learn in community.

Studying at Southern is about more than taking classes; it’s about learning in community, making lifelong friends and seeing the gospel come to life. Students can live on campus, attend bi-weekly chapel services and conferences that feature well-known speakers, join a professor-led shepherding group and enjoy the rest of the resources that make Southern more than just a place to study.

Jason Meyer was drawn to Southern Seminary because of its commitment to “the importance of the local church and how they put that emphasis into practice through local church involvement.” Meyer hopes to embody that same commitment in his ministry as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minn. In May, 2012, the membership of Bethlehem Baptist Church overwhelmingly voted to accept Jason Meyer as its pastor of preaching and vision, succeeding John Piper in that role.

BIBLICAL COUNSELING With humble confidence in God’s Word, counselors can minister to God’s people and the complexity of their problems. Southern’s programs are designed to equip students to approach people skillfully and knowledgeably, fully assured of the redemptive power of the gospel.

Rebekah Hannah G R A D U AT E , M . D I V.

When Rebekah Hannah decided to attend Southern Seminary, it was because of the biblical counseling program. “I wanted to be in a place where I could learn how to use the sufficiency of Scripture to help hurting people,” she said. Now, having graduated with a master of divinity in biblical counseling in 2010, she’s doing just that. Hannah currently serves in a variety of roles, including working long-distance with seminary professor Stuart Scott and 180 Counseling and Education and teaching and discipling women as a women’s ministry fellow on the campus of Columbia University in New York City. “Seeing God act as redeemer in people’s lives is an absolute privilege,” said Hannah. “Counseling others with God’s Word is one of the best things you could ever do.” Hannah’s time at Southern gave her a strong theological basis that she uses to counsel women on a daily basis. She said, “Learning how to apply what seminary teaches outside of the classroom is where you truly grow to be more like Christ and learn how to have a truly effective ministry.”

“We expected hardship heading into seminary. Along the way, God added two boys to our three girls, changed my job from part-time to full-time and placed me in difficult leadership roles. Through it all, God gave us grace immeasurable, providing us with what we needed financially, professors who met with us and prayed for us, campus resources that our children miss to this day and a local church where we were able to minister and be ministered to.”
