Dear Southern

I wonder what they packed for college. In the years following World War II, what did the female students who moved into Talge Hall (a women’s residence at the time) bring? I doubt the rooms were equipped with a phone line; a personal typewriter would have been a luxury. Beyond the suitcases, I wonder what intangibles they carried. They had watched fathers and brothers go to war. Now it was their turn to change the world. Today Talge Hall is home to 750 residents. With the help of the dedicated We-Haul crew (see page 30), they carried a few more gadgets into their rooms this past August than their 1950s counterparts. But many of the intangibles were undoubtedly the same: hope, a love of learning, a desire to serve. These are heavy things, but they are carried in the heart and mind and become lighter when shared. – Kendra Stanton-Lee, assistant professor
