broker’s note director’s note If the temperature does not tell you summer is here, the number of visitors certainly should! The Destin and South Walton areas are overflowing with families on vacation, filling their days with beach life and evenings with village life, many considering the purchase of their own home away from home here in the area. Sandestin Real Estate has a place, a space and a price for you. Statistically the property choices are fewer every day. At the end of the first quarter of 2013 there were 345 properties on the market (available inventory), in contrast to 419 this time last year. This equates to roughly 82% of last year’s inventory or an 18% decrease in inventory for sale in the resort. In the first quarter, Jan. 1 to March 31, 2013, real estate associates closed 97 transactions in Sandestin ranging from $35,000 Inspiration fractions to $3,100,000 Burnt Pine homes, including ten homesites with sales ranging from $68,000 to $325,000. Sandestin Real Estate’s service, knowledge and expertise extend from the Destin bridge (to the west) to Rosemary Beach (to the east) … and from beach to bay. Oh what a difference a year or two makes. The real estate market in the Sandestin area is improving, and it sure feels good to say so. Shout it from the rooftop or whisper it to a friend, but the facts and figures show it to be the truth. Today there are 73.6% fewer distressed properties listed than the same time last year and, in fact, there are only five currently for sale in Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. What does that mean? With fewer distressed properties for sale, prices are stabilizing and in many instances increasing. I have found through the first quarter of 2013 that there is upward pressure on pricing as the inventory of available homes and condominiums shrinks, and more buyers return to purchase in this amazing and wonderful community along the Emerald Coast. Overall inventory is down, properties are selling faster today than last year and many communities are seeing sales prices increase. Sounds like an improving market to me, and now is a great time to review your real estate portfolio. If you or someone you know is thinking of buying or selling property, please give us a call. lephant Walk, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort’s elegant beach-front eatery, is back. From 1985 to 2003, Elephant Walk was the Gulf-front dining spot, whether patrons were seeking fine dining, lively libations or simply one of the most spectacular waterfront views along the coast. Restaurateurs Tom Rice and Wayne Lewis, known for owning several area restaurants including the Marlin Grill in The Village of Baytowne Wharf, have re-opened the signature eatery and revived many of its rich traditions. The excitement about the restaurant’s return reached a fever pitch on the resort as well as the community before its opening in early April. Opening a new restaurant is a challenge. Reopening an iconic piece of Sandestin history is even more challenging. Rice acknowledged that many guests have shared their memories of Elephant Walk, setting the bar high for the revitalized restaurant. “There are as many different memories of Elephant Walk as there are people here,” Rice said. “It means so much to so many people.”

General Manager John Perry agreed. “People have told us they had their first date at Elephant Walk,” he said. “One couple remembered that they eloped and ate at Elephant Walk. Everyone has fond memories of this place.” Rice took the charm and history of the restaurant and served up a more-up-to-date version of the classic. “We wanted to bring in all the mystique and nostalgia of Elephant Walk but also bring it into today,” he said. The history of the restaurant can still be tasted in Elephant Walk’s new menu. “We made sure to include some of the favorites that people remember,” Rice said. “The menu has today’s versions of the popular Grouper Elizabeth and Filet Mignon Henry the VIII. And the house dressing, the Raspberry Vinaigrette, is still served. We have even kept the old Elephant Walk phone number: 850.267.4800.” One of Rice’s goals was to ensure that the menu offered a wide range of options, from “date night” elegant

options to lighter fare and delightful sandwiches. The notion was to welcome all to the restaurant, including those who may have spent the day on the golf course or at the beach and want something on the simpler side. Yummy appetizers such as Gulf Shrimp Cocktail and Yellow Fin Tuna Carpaccio, and a range of salads, among other items, tempt those wanting lighter fare. The Elephant Walk Burger and Crispy Grouper Sandwich are also featured. Seafood, pasta and steaks round out the list of entrees. A dynamic and excellent wine list is part of the new Elephant Walk, Perry noted. “We will grow our reserve list as we come to better understand our customers’ preferences,” he said. “Of course, we elevated the art of martinis, serving them tableside. Our single malt Scotch menu is outstanding too.” The Elephant Walk theme is evident in the restaurant’s décor but spiced up with an updated perspective. The

interior design now also evokes a South African hunting lodge retreat, according to Rice. “We’d like diners to imagine they are enjoying a wonderful dinner after a full day on safari,” he said. An integral part of the Elephant Walk experience, The Governor’s Attic, is also back. Encompassing the top floor of the restaurant, the Attic serves dinner and drinks in its sophisticated lounge areas and wraparound bar, all framed with those unbelievable Gulf of Mexico views. Patrons also enjoy dining at the downstairs bar or out on the deck. Elephant Walk began serving lunch in mid-May. Elephant Walk accommodates about 225 diners. The renewed beach-front restaurant has hosted many celebrations and is available for corporate events and semi-private functions. Grouper Elizabeth as served at Elephant Walk 4 Portions (serves 4)

2 lbs., fresh grouper fillet 1 cup flour 2 eggs (for eggwash) 9 oz. white wine and cream sauce 1 oz. shaved almonds (roasted) 4 oz. jumbo lump crabmeat 4 oz. butter – clarified Worcestershire sauce – to taste Lemon juice – to taste Salt – to taste White Wine and Cream Sauce 1 pint heavy cream 1 oz. butter – clarified 1 cup green onions – diced Salt – to taste White pepper – to taste 1 bay leaf

Method to Cook Grouper Season the fish fillets with a few drops of Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice and a little salt. Dip the seasoned fillet in the flour, coat all sides, shake excess flour off and then dip into the eggwash to coat. Saute in hot frying pan on both sides until golden brown. Method to Cook Sauce The moment the grouper is in the pan you start your sauce in another pan. Heat the butter first then add green onions and saute those for a couple of seconds. Add the crabmeat and all other sauce ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer until the sauce is reduced and thick enough to coat the fish. Divide the sauce evenly over the fish and garnish with the roasted almonds.

Sandestin Triathlon: Aug. 24, 2013 27th Annual Triathlon will lure 700 participants for a half-mile Gulf of Mexico swim, a 20-mile bike along the coast and a 4-mile run through Sandestin’s beach and bayside community. Proceeds benefit Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast. Sandestin Bicycle Tour: May, 2014 Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort on Florida’s Emerald Coast will be the backdrop for the Sandestin Beach Bicycle Tour. As hundreds of cyclists venture through Northwest Florida, this weekend bicycle event is designed for all road cyclists. Participants will get an opportunity to soak in a scenic bike ride alongside pristine beaches, including a rest stop in charming Seaside and also enjoy post-ride activities and mechanical support. Proceeds benefit local charity.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding Stand up paddle boarding offers a completely different way to experience and enjoy the water and wildlife. Some people compare the experience to “yoga on water.”

Canoeing Cruise around Choctawhatchee Bay and enjoy use of canoes from Baytowne Marina with your Sandestin resort key card. Open March through October.

June 19–23 The Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin has set the new precedent for world-class sportfishing tournaments along the Gulf Coast. Ranked 5th Richest Tournament in the World by Marlin magazine, sanctioned by the World Billfish Series and part of the International Game Fish Association Off-shore circuit this event gives serious angling teams their shot at winning a huge payoff while receiving the royal treatment from the Destin fishing event’s hosts and sponsors.  With cash categories for dolphin, tuna and wahoo as well as individual angler trophies, fishermen have a multitude of ways to stake their claim on Destin fishing tournament history!
