Sage Gateshead’s Silver Programme celebrates its 10th Birthday in 2015 Following a one-off singing session in January 2005, Sage Gateshead’s Silver Programme has continued to flourish and now, in its 10th year, has almost 60 regular weekly classes plus many one-off activities. The Silver Programme provides a wide variety of daytime musical activities for people over 50, within a relaxed, informal and supportive environment. There’s something for everyone, from absolute beginners to experienced players. We hope that once you become involved we can help you achieve your full potential and introduce you to things you never thought you could do. Most classes take place at Sage Gateshead and Gateshead Old Town Hall. Please check timetable for class venue. ABILITY LEVEL Beginner Returning to music after a while or you believe that you can’t sing or play a note. These groups are designed to help you to conquer your fears as well as develop basic skills and technique so that you can quickly take your musicmaking to the next level. There are no auditions and no prior skills or experience is needed. Intermediate Musician Confident in your own ability but haven’t sung in a choir or played in a group before. If you’d like to try a new genre or something a little more challenging, this is the place for you to develop and improve your skills. There are no auditions but some experience and loads of enthusiasm is required. Confident Musician Looking to perfect your skills and use your knowledge and experience to its full potential. Sessions are likely to be genrespecific with performance as a key element of the group’s aims. A commitment to regular attendance is expected. You may be required to audition.

Play&and Sing ROCK AND POP BANDS Silver Rock 'n' Roll Band (Previously Classic Rock) Wednesday, 1-2.30pm Join this Rock ‘n’ Roll band and learn to play all the classics from artists such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers and many more. Open to a wide range of abilities from beginner upwards and for those who love to ‘Twist and Shout!’ Roots Rock Thursday, 4-5.30pm A rock band line-up covering the folk and country side of rock, both American and English - Neil Young, The Byrds, Hank Williams, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and many more. Solid Rock Friday, 11am-12.30pm A large band focusing on more modern rock classics from the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s. Silver Sensations (Previously Silver Rock Band) Thursday, 2.15-3.45pm This long running group plays all the rock and pop classics from across the eras. Come and explore your inner rockstar! This group is on an ‘invite only’ basis, due to its large size.

MIXED INSTRUMENT GROUPS Silver Skiffle Band Friday, 3-4.30pm Traditional skiffle band featuring guitar, mandolin, washboard, singing, and teachest bass, playing ’20s and ’30s blues, American and English folk songs by artists such as Leadbelly and Lonnie Donegan. Silver Folk Band Tuesday, 3.30-5pm For instrumentalists and singers with an interest in folk music. Learn folk tunes and songs with the opportunity to bring your own suggestions and to work on new arrangements. No prior band experience necessary.

Silver Acoustic Band NEW and Song Monday, 1.30-3pm Welcoming all acoustic instruments and singers, this group will focus on arranging contemporary songs as a band. From Chuck Berry’s blues; rock from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to the Kinks and singer-songwriters such as Richard Thompson and John Martyn. You’ll work together as a band alongside exploring the musical skills and techniques involved with some additional help available online.

UKULELE

Silver Beginner Guitar Friday, 1-2.30pm This absolute beginner class will help you get to grips with the basics to then progress to our more advanced classes.

Silver Beginner Ukulele Thursday, 10.30-11.30am An introduction for complete beginners. Simple chord charts and well-known songs are used to develop skills within a small group, giving players the confidence to progress to intermediate classes and larger groups. Ukuleles are available to borrow.

Silver Improver Guitar Thursday 10.30am–12noon Improve your guitar skills in this intermediate guitar group that looks at a wide variety of tunes. Silver Banjo Group Tuesday 12NOON-1.30pm Develop your skills and gain experience of playing with others. Silver Mandolin Orchestra Thursday 10.30am-12noon Improve and develop your mandolin skills in a friendly group.

Sing 'n' Strum Thursday, 12.30-2pm For those interested in singing and playing the guitar. This performance group is for the more experienced guitar players, however there are still opportunities to improve and learn new techniques. Pick 'n' Mix Thursday, 1-2.30pm For those who want to learn advanced techniques including finger picking, soloing and slide playing. Silver Bluegrass Band Tuesday, 1.45-3.15pm For singers and instrumentalists who are keen to learn Appalachian and American roots music. Guitar, ukulele, banjo and mandolin players all welcome.

Silver Improver Ukulele Friday, 11am-12.30pm The next step once you have learnt the basics. Develop skills and gain confidence within a smaller group


Silver Ukulele Extra Thursday, 3.45-4.45pm Gain confidence and master new chords and repertoire used in the Silver Ukulele Band. This group is for those who have moved from the Improver Ukulele group and are new to the band.

Silver Chimes Monday, 2-4pm A group using bellplates (a modern alternative to hand bells) to play harmonised arrangements of folk, classical and popular music. The ability to read music is helpful though not essential, but regular attendance is important. People with different levels of musical experience can enjoy playing bellplates, working together and sharing ideas. Peer led.

Silver Ukulele Band Thursday, 2-3.30pm For those who have got to grips with the basics of ukulele playing. A friendly, fun and relaxed group with a varied repertoire. Soprano, tenor and baritone ukulele players all welcome. NEW

Silver Ukulele Ensemble Thursday, 12.30-1.45pm The perfect group for those who have experienced the beginner and improver groups. Here you will develop skills within a larger group setting which will be applied to a broad repertoire of styles. The repertoire will be relatively challenging and a good place to learn to then be able to move on to the Ukulele Band or Ukulele Extra groups. Silver Rock and Pop NEW Ukulele Monday, 3.30-5pm A ukulele band with a rock edge, you’ll learn to play arrangements of classic rock and pop hits from the 60s through to modern day. Accompanied by drums and bass guitar.

PERCUSSION Silver Sambanistas Wednesday 11am-12.30pm This energetic samba band plays traditional and original pieces. Using traditional Brazilian drums and hand percussion, this group will get you into the carnival spirit. All levels of ability welcome. African Percussion Wednesday, 1-2.30pm Explore African rhythms using traditional instruments including djembes and bells.

APEX (advanced percussion ensemble) Wednesday, 3-4.30pm This exciting advanced percussion ensemble plays a range of complex and intricate pieces. Experienced percussionists will enjoy the challenge. New members welcome.


WIND INSTRUMENTS Silver Beginner Recorder Friday, 2.30-4pm Get to grips with the recorder in this introductory group. Open to all abilities whether you can read music or not. Peer led. Silver Improver Recorder Friday, 10.30am-12.30pm For players who are ready to move on from the beginner group. Peer led.

STEEL PANS Silver Pan Bands See timetable for individual class ability levels Monday 3-4.30pm & 4.30-6pm Thursday 12-1.30pm & 1.30-3pm Friday 9.30-11am, 11am-12.30pm, 1-2.30pm & 2.30-4pm We currently have seven Silver Steel Pan Bands and a beginner group. You can join any group but some have been going longer than others so you may need time to catch up with old repertoire, as well as learning new tunes given to the groups. All groups have the opportunity to perform throughout the year. Please contact us to find out more about each group.

Silver Recorder Ensemble Thursday, 3-4.30pm Learn a wide variety of repertoire from medieval dance music to The Beatles. Peer led. Silver Recorder Consort Thursday, 3-5pm An informal group of competent players who play mainly 5-8 part music written for early instruments. Music is provided and occasionally ordered from publishers, with members paying for their own copies. Peer led.

Silver Wind Band Tuesday 10.30am-12.30pm Do you play a brass or woodwind instrument or have you played in the past? Join this ever growing ensemble which covers a broad range of repertoire and brush up on your skills. Some familiarity with the instrument required but no previous ensemble experience is necessary. Silver Sax Monday, 3.30-4.45pm Improve and develop your saxophone skills alongside an experienced tutor whilst covering a broad range of exciting repertoire. Some experience of the saxophone required.


Sing ROCK AND POP Silver Rock Singers Monday, 1.30-3pm This singing group looks at harmony arrangements of classic and contemporary rock songs. Quicksilver Friday, 1.45-3.15pm Vocal performance group looking at arrangements of classic pop songs, accompanied by a small band. Silver Soul Friday, 3.30-5pm A choir singing popular soul repertoire from both sides of the Atlantic.

VARIOUS STYLES Silversmiths Wednesday 11am-12.30pm This blues, jazz and gospel group covers a wide repertoire. No previous experience is necessary - just passion and enthusiasm. NEW Silver Shantymen Wednesday, 1-2.30pm This is a new peer-led group for men interested in singing sea shanties. The approach will be informal with improvement the main objective.

Silver Divas Wednesday, 1-2.30pm Accompanied by piano, this group works on everything from popular songs to Broadway classics. The emphasis is on energy, enthusiasm and most of all fun. No experience necessary. Opera d'Argento Wednesday, 3-4.30pm Songs from operas, operettas, opera choruses and arias from around the world. There will be occasional classical and sacred pieces and traditional folk songs. These fun and lively workshops are suitable for anyone who can follow a part. Shades of Silver Friday, 11am-12.30pm Sing a mixed repertoire, including popular classical, pop, music from the shows and more. Accompanied by piano. Silver Breves Monday, 11am-12.30pm A classical music singing group for those who would like to attempt more complicated and challenging sacred and secular work. Accompanied by piano.

Silver Madrigals Tuesday, 11am-12.30pm Madrigals were written around the time of Queen Elizabeth to be sung for fun in mixed voice parts. This unaccompanied small singing group is both fun and challenging; a subtle communication is developed among the singers to establish tempo and dynamics. This is not an auditioned group, but you would need to be experienced in partsinging and able to follow written music. Silver Chorus Monday, 1.30-3pm An auditioned choir with a mixed repertoire of show tunes, pop, folk, classical, world and gospel. There’ll be 3-part singing with some solo work within choral arrangements. A mix of accompanied and acapella.


SILVER SINGERS

Welcoming and sociable groups singing a wideranging mix of repertoire in parts to suit any level using tutors from Sage Gateshead but in venues around the region. This is a good starting point if you’re not sure which singing style is for you. No experience necessary. There are a few parking spaces within the gates of the church and other car parks nearby. There are parking spaces in the car parks at the front and the side of Gateshead Old Town Hall with Blue Badge parking spaces in both.


Theory&and Tuition Music Theory Level 1 Tuesday 10.30am -12noon An introduction to some of the basic elements of music theory to give you a good grounding whatever instrument you play. Covering areas including naming notes on the stave, constructing major/chromatic scales, understanding major/ chromatic intervals and creating basic diatonic triads. Basic rhythm reading will also be introduced. Music Theory Level 2 Tuesday, 1-2.30pm Following Music Theory Level 1 to consider diatonic 7th chords, analysing basic chord sequences, changing the key of a song, navigation chord charts and expanding upon rhythm reading. You will need to have completed the Music Theory Level 1 sessions before commencing the Music Theory Level 2 sessions.

Music Theory Level 3 Tuesday, 3-4.30pm Following Music Theory Level 2 to further explore examples of popular chord progressions / songs, begin work on semi-quaver rhythm reading and begin looking at some of the ABRSM graded theory material (3/4). There may also be some opportunity for student input into the direction of the sessions.

Multibuy Discount If you book onto more than one session you will receive a discount of £5 (full term) or £2.50 (half term) for each subsequent session booked. For example: Full Term Half Term 1 session a week £45 £22.50 2 sessions a week £85 £42.50 3 sessions a week £125 £62.50 Discounted rates are only available on sessions which cost £45 per term or £22.50 per half term. Adult Programme The Adult Programme provides a wide variety of evening vocal and instrumental classes. If you enjoy performing there are plenty of opportunities for you to show off your skills.
