13-15 August 2015

Folkworks Durham Gathering is a festival springing from the wealth of folk and traditional musicians working as tutors at Folkworks Summer Schools, which take place in Durham in the week leading up to the festival. The festival shines a spotlight on these musicians, including Karine Polwart, Eliza Carthy and Sam Sweeney, and the day of outdoor music on Saturday features many of the Folkworks Summer Schools’ participants giving a unique insight into the work and fun of the week.

Women of Rebellion: Songs of protest and revolution Karine Polwart, Nancy Kerr, Bella Hardy & Bryony Griffith and Gina Le Faux

The inspiration for this concert comes from Durham University’s exhibition, Magna Carta and the Changing Face of Revolt, marking 800 years since the signing of Magna Carta. Folk music has always had a connection with protest and dissent. Karine Polwart has been researching the exhibition’s archive and will be presenting new material as her response to this. Other themes which take us to the present day will be explored by BBC Radio 2’s ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ Nancy Kerr, nationally acclaimed singer Bella Hardy, fiddle, mandolin and guitar player Gina Le Faux and the remarkable English folk singer and fiddle player Bryony Griffith. The Adult Summer School Folkwords group will also take some of this material as their theme for this year and will contribute to this concert. Tickets: £12 (Concessions: £10) Unreserved seating
