From the President Technology is ever evolving at the Academy. We are now in our tenth year of being a one-to-one laptop school. We no longer worry about snow days because programs like the Flipped Classroom, Educreations, and Today’s Meeting are capable of bringing the classroom into students’ homes. – Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71

Dear Friends, Autumn. I love this time of year. The beauty of nature reminds me of God’s countless blessings. And among them I consider my ministry here at the Academy one that I most cherish. As I reflect upon the last school year, I see the hand of God evident in a myriad of ways. I am particularly touched by the feeling of kinship we experience when we bring together Apostle ministries. This was especially meaningful for me during the visit of our sister Apostle high school, Cor Jesu Academy in St. Louis. Their choir joined ours for a first-ever combined concert in our beautiful Sacred Heart Chapel. That same feeling continued last summer when both schools participated in the inaugural Charism Connection, a five-day student immersion in the charism of the Apostles. It was amazing! The bond was reinforced during the Clelian Institute, a program for adult staff of our Apostle institutions throughout the country. Whenever Apostle ministries connect, it is as if there are no barriers, since the spirit of Mother Clelia serves as the conduit that brings us together. The Apostle charism is stronger than ever in our institutions and continues to be shared in all corners of our world. This year we warmly welcome our new faculty members and staff, as well as the newest member of our administration, Sibani Sengupta, Ph.D., as dean of academic affairs. Having served as a teacher here and as chair of the science department, Dr. Sengupta brings to her new role knowledge, love, and loyalty to all things Sacred Heart. We also celebrate Karen Harris, the first woman to chair the Advisory Council. Karen is the mother of Katie Harris ’10 and is associate controller for treasury & gift administration at Yale University. She has a wealth of experience in finance and investments and has great passion for Sacred Heart Academy. Technology is ever evolving at the Academy. We are now in our tenth year of being a one-toone laptop school. This fall, freshmen and faculty are using the new Lenovo Think Pad Yoga, which has the power and productivity of a mini laptop and offers the freedom and mobility of a tablet. We no longer worry about snow days because programs like the Flipped Classroom, Educreations, and Today’s Meeting are capable of bringing the classroom into students’ homes. Our Wi-Fi has also been updated, which makes it possible to work online in any area of the building. In the 2014-2015 academic year, we are pleased to offer over $500,000 in tuition assistance to 33% of our students. The Endowment continues to grow, helping support our vision of making a Sacred Heart Academy education available to any student who qualifies academically, regardless of her ability to pay. Our goal is to eventually grow the Endowment to $10,000,000. Our Master Plan is almost complete and we look forward to sharing it with you in future editions of HEART and on our website so please visit often. These wonderful things could not have happened without your support. Since tuition does not fully cover the cost to educate a Sacred Heart Academy student, we rely on generous friends like you to help us. We are forever grateful to our alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends for all that you do for us! May the Sacred Heart continue to abundantly bless you and your family. Gratefully in the Heart of Christ,

Technology and Innovation Across the Curriculum

“We have a new generation in front of us and the traditional classroom no longer meets their needs. It’s been thrilling to see how quickly the technology has evolved here.” – MaryLee Delaney

For more than a decade, the faculty and staff at Sacred Heart Academy have been on the cutting edge of instructional technology, but no one at the school has any interest in merely standing still. Teachers are continually moving forward in an effort to prepare students for their next steps in the “real world.” “Our goal is to keep the technology we’re using – and our network – current,” says Kathy Cioffi, director of technology. “We’re always researching the latest developments so we can incorporate them into our classes and provide the best learning experience for our students. Here at Sacred Heart Academy, it’s all about our students’ learning experience.” In 2005, Sacred Heart touted the addition of a single desktop computer in every classroom, a revamped school website, and web pages created by teachers. It was also reported at that time that by 2009, each student would have access to her own laptop computer, provided by the school. Those ambitious plans might now seem somewhat old-fashioned in our all-access, instant-information age, but they have all come to fruition, with even more enhancements, such as availability of Wi-Fi throughout the school

and the recent introduction of Lenovo Yoga tablets. Veteran teachers remember that at the time of the move toward a more tech-savvy Academy, the initiative was not originally embraced by everyone, but later found that becoming a laptop school presented them with the opportunity to once again become students as they learned how to best utilize technology. Elizabeth Christophy, Ph.D. who teaches chemistry, honors chemistry, and AP chemistry, was supportive of the school’s early technology efforts because she recognized that students would use these tools when they ventured out into the world. An advocate of the Flipped Classroom, Betty Christophy believes that the way she teaches has been altered, and infinitely improved, by technology. She once spent the majority of class time lecturing, and assigning homework that consisted of problems framed around the day’s lecture. That scenario is now “flipped” as students work on problems in class and view videos of her lectures as part of their homework assignments. “Students can learn at their own speed. They’re watching the lectures at home and that gives us so much more time in class. We do problems together, we do data analysis, we do more labs, and we make connections. It frees up more class time and it gets students more actively involved in learning, rather than sitting and listening to me, which is not always the best way to learn,” explains Betty. She also points out that, with boiler-plate data now available at the press of a key, more learning time is spent analyzing those findings and putting them in the context of the subject matter: “We’re teaching students to think more deeply and approach the data in a different way. We can teach at a much deeper level because we’re not worrying about the nitty-gritty mechanics. We’re thinking about the higher level of learning.” MaryLee Delaney, who teaches English and directs the annual musical, is another veteran teacher who quickly saw the need to move toward a tech-based philosophy – she cheerfully refers to the school as “Laptop Nation.” Recognizing that most students now

start first grade with at least some knowledge of computers, MaryLee says Sacred Heart is providing exactly what 21st century students require. “We have a new generation in front of us and the traditional classroom no longer meets their needs. It’s amazing how far we’ve come through the years. It’s been thrilling to see how quickly the technology has evolved here.” she shares. A proponent of the Interactive Classroom, whereby students utilize a program called OneNote, MaryLee allows her students to view her PowerPoint presentations and type in questions during lectures when there are nuances they don’t understand. Students are also able to type notes into PowerPoint lectures, which can be saved and referenced later. The Interactive Classroom allows students to anonymously ask questions and enables MaryLee to know if her students understand the concepts she’s discussing.

And, like Betty, MaryLee utilizes technology to go well beyond the walls once imposed by

traditional education. In teaching everything from grammar to Hamlet, she has the opportunity to use OneNote and YouTube to provide compelling illustrations for lessons. “For something like Hamlet, we can introduce some higher-level concepts and introduce deeper philosophical questions in real-time. Students can explore some of the bigger themes of the piece,” offers MaryLee, who also raves about utilizing a program called Virtual Stage Manager for theatre productions. While math teacher Stephanie Elder still likes to utilize some tried-and-true educational delivery methods, she has also implemented the Flipped Classroom and Educreations, which makes available lecture videos for students to access at any time, which she feels is valuable outside the classroom. “Students have the ability to learn at their own pace,” Stephanie shares. “Even though my class is scheduled from 8 - 9:30 a.m., that doesn’t mean that’s the best time for those students to learn math. Students have the ability to go back and forth and look at the lesson and look at the examples at a time when it’s good for them, when it’s beneficial. Some do better in the morning, some like to study at night, and some do better in the afternoon – whatever works for them.”

The approach to technology taken by Carmen Martinez, Ph.D., Spanish teacher and chair of world languages, aids students in both language preparation and their understanding of the core values of Sacred Heart Academy. “We had just finished a lesson and I was thinking about what I could do to expand on what students learned,” Carmen explains. “We wanted to do something different, and at the same time we were talking about the core values – Catholic Community, Compassion, Excellence, Integrity, and Social Justice. I asked the students to create something using Movie Maker about one or two of the core values, using the language and the vocabulary. We presented the students’ work at Open House to show what they were learning and how they were integrating the resources in the classroom.” Carmen has also implemented Tell Me More as part of a virtual language lab that offers activities and programs for Spanish and French students to strengthen their speaking and comprehension skills. Students work for one hour each week away from the classroom and turn in their work on Saturday mornings. Students applaud Sacred Heart’s high-tech initiatives, although some admit they enjoy combining technological advances with traditional approaches to education. “I really like that we have our own laptops and are allowed to type our notes in class,” Kathleen Quinn ’16 says. “We have drop boxes to hand in our assignments without writing them out, which saves paper. To some people, it might be a distraction, but I think it’s important to implement technology in our classrooms.” “I still like taking my own notes, but sometimes I wind up typing my notes because it’s another study skill,” Erinn Halasinski ’15 added. “Teachers use PowerPoint, giving students the ability to take notes right on the screen. It can be really helpful.” While maintaining methods that have traditionally characterized teaching and learning, Sacred Heart has never failed to also embrace innovative methods – especially when it comes to the latest in technology. Through initiatives across the curriculum that include the utilization of laptops, tablets, interactive classrooms, Educreations, Flipped Classroom, and a host of other inventive software programs, 21st century learning is alive and well in Sacred Heart classrooms and labs, and there can be no doubt that the best is yet to come.

Bonnie Burke Pan ’94

B

y the time the technology boom arrived at Sacred Heart Academy, Bonnie had already graduated. That did not prevent her, however, from staking out a career with companies that have either been technology industry leaders or have leaned heavily on technology in their operations. Bonnie, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in drama in 1999 from Catholic University and a master of fine arts degree in theatre management and producing in 2005 from Columbia University, currently works as executive vice president of programming for Los Angeles-based Maker Studios, which earlier this year was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. Described as a “technology first, talent-driven media company,” Maker Studios is the top producer and distributor of online video for an audience of some 450 million subscribers. But for Bonnie, who oversees Maker Studios’ four business units across the Gaming & Sports, Life & Style, Family, and Entertainment division, the job is about helping people tell their stories. “I have a really unique role with technology now,” Bonnie says. “Part of what I do on a day-to-day basis didn’t even exist until a few years ago. My background is in storytelling, theatre, and performing arts, and when broadband started to expand and people had opportunities to have high-speed internet in their homes, the creation of YouTube made it possible for people to start telling stories from their homes. So what I do now is actually work in an industry that develops and manages storytellers from around the world.” A member of just about every performing ensemble during her days at Sacred Heart, Bonnie previously worked as senior director and head of programming at Yahoo! Video and was also director of programming and operations for Yahoo! Entertainment. During her time with Yahoo!, Bonnie supervised the original video and programming teams and forged beneficial relationships with entities like Sony Pictures Television, Red Hour Digital, Playtone and others. Before joining Yahoo!, Bonnie worked on Broadway in both commercial and not-for-profit producing offices, including two years in the office of the executive producer of the Manhattan Theatre Club. While high-tech learning wasn’t part of the Sacred Heart curriculum during her days here, Bonnie says she received much in the way of learning about the entertainment industry – namely, how to entertain. “I was involved with theatre and musicals and drama club,” shares Bonnie, whose husband, William Pan, is the founder of Latbash, a site for planning group trips and getaways. “At Sacred Heart there was always an opportunity to share through different mediums. In religion, we would use music to talk about an expression of individuality, and in French, we’d write stories that were basically creative writing exercises. That’s really what the internet has empowered us to do today – tell stories through YouTube, Vine, SnapChat, and Instagram. Everybody’s a creator.” SACRED HEART ACADEMY

Kathleen Burke Mitic ’87

K

athleen has enjoyed a distinguished career in Silicon Valley that includes working with a host of the titans of high-tech, including Facebook, Palm, and Yahoo! While there wasn’t much in the way of instructional technology available during her days at Sacred Heart, Kathleen was able to master one of history’s greatest communication tools. “We had some great typewriters!” Kathleen quips. “Learning how to type at Sacred Heart saved me when computers did show up.”

Kathleen resigned from her position as director of platform & mobile marketing at Facebook in 2012 to start her own business, Sitch, a startup expected to launch in 2015 with a phone app that will connect people with fun and inventive events and activities in their communities. While technology was in low supply at Sacred Heart in the late 1980s, Kathleen says much of what she learned enabled her to find her footing in the always-changing and often volatile world of entrepreneurship. The foundation of her career was set at SHA. “One of the greatest skills I learned at Sacred Heart was problem-solving,” Kathleen says. “When I look at the business opportunity I’m trying to crack in technology, it doesn’t matter which industry, which application, which platform, etc. – it all comes back to ‘What’s the opportunity we’re striving for? What’s the problem we’re trying to solve? What are the different ways in which we can approach this problem?’ At SHA, I learned about ways to frame opportunities and think about the problems before they arise.” As an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, Kathleen says the foundation of developing products is math and science, two subjects she tackled with relish at the Academy. “I remember fondly my algebra class with Sr. Eileen Bridge, ASCJ and my chemistry class with Sr. Jude Ruggieri, ASCJ. They taught the foundations of math and science and gave me an intense curiosity to always learn more because they were great teachers. Those were super valuable classes for sure.” One of the most critical building blocks of a successful startup is the development of teamwork, something Kathleen learned about in and out of the classroom. “I recall lots of projects at Sacred Heart where we worked in teams. I remember dissecting pigs in pairs in biology class. And I played volleyball and tennis, which was great for teambuilding. Everything in technology happens with a team,” Kathleen explains. She and her husband, Scott, an identity theft expert and entrepreneur, live in Palo Alto, California. With new worlds to explore and conquer in the technology realm, Kathleen continues to appreciate and call upon the foundation she began constructing at Sacred Heart when technology was still the subject of science fiction movies.

PRESIDENT to PRESIDENT Student Council President Ashley Heidtmann ’15 Interviews Sacred Heart President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71 WHAT INCENTIVES DO YOU USE TO ENCOURAGE TEACHERS TO MOTIVATE THEIR STUDENTS?

In my role as president, I am not directly involved with the teachers or the curriculum like the principal. Per the president/principal model, that is Sr. Maureen’s job, and that allows me to devote all my energy to promoting the vision of the school, with particular emphasis on our core values and the Excelsior Woman. When the faculty and staff gather before the start of the school year, we spend an entire day revisiting the mission and vision. I also talk about the charism of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart, which is the foundation – from curriculum to discipline to extracurriculars – of everything we do here. I also discuss our goals as we move forward. This year we have three specific goals which we want to remain cognizant of throughout the year. First, we strive to continue to provide an academically challenging curriculum that is enhanced by recent developments in technology and pedagogy. This is why our faculty members work so hard promoting critical thinking and the use of alternate forms of authentic assessment, some of which are explored in HEART’s feature article. Second, our hope is to increase Sacred Heart’s national profile. I am very proud that teachers and students have been published in national magazines and that we have received recognition from national organizations. Lastly, we aspire to make a Sacred Heart education available to any young woman who qualifies academically, regardless of her ability to pay.

Ashley Heidtmann ’15 sits with Sr. Sheila.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE UPCOMING MUSICAL, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN?

I love the Sacred Heart Academy musical. It is such a significant part of our rich tradition; the first musical was performed in 1947, the year after the school first opened its doors. Like all of our musicals, I know that Singin’ in the Rain will be a first class production, and I am very happy that so many of our students are involved. IN WHAT WAY DO YOU PLAN ON CARRYING OUT THIS YEAR’S THEME, “THE EXCELSIOR WOMAN”?

In short, the Excelsior Woman is the woman we want each Sacred Heart Academy graduate to be: a woman of integrity and compassion, formed by the Catholic community of our school, ever in the pursuit of excellence and social justice. Director of Campus Ministry Sr. Lany Jo Smith, ASCJ, will integrate the theme into each of our First Friday Masses. After Mass, I will address the student body about some aspect of the Excelsior Woman. Additionally, the school has been decorated with references to the Excelsior Woman to serve as a constant reminder to our students.

WHAT IS THE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM INITIATIVE AND WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH WITH IT?

Sacred Heart is committed to educating the whole person, beyond just what occurs in the physical classroom. We emphasize pedagogical tools that allow teachers to expand upon all the wonderful things they already do in their classes. The Beyond the Classroom Initiative is a concrete way to incorporate these principles. We have encouraged our faculty to invite guest speakers into their classrooms, take students on more class field trips, invite speakers to address the entire student body at least once a quarter, and offer after school activities to enhance student learning. HOW ARE YOU INTRODUCING OUR CORE VALUES TO THE INCOMING FRESHMEN?

It begins in the classroom when our faculty integrates the core values into their teaching. I work to ensure that there are constant reminders of our core values throughout the building. For example, I ordered a banner listing the core values for the school cafe. I have also distributed prayer cards to the girls, explaining our mission, the Excelsior Woman, and our core values. F

ounded by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sacred Heart Academy and Cor Jesu Academy in St. Louis have recently instituted new programs to bring together the student bodies of both schools to explore their shared charism. Every July representatives from Apostle missions from across the country participate in the Clelian Institute at the Mount Sacred Heart Provincialate. Over the course of five days, participants explore ways in which the spirituality and charism of Mother Clelia Merloni, Foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, can be more fully integrated into daily life and work. This year, however, Sacred Heart and Cor Jesu Academy administrators realized that students should also have a similar opportunity since they are an integral part of spreading the charism of Mother Clelia. As a result, the inaugural Charism Connection, an Apostle leadership and service opportunity for SHA and CJA students, took place this June at Sacred Heart on the Lake in Higganum, Connecticut. Jeanne Lawlor Mazzariello ’77, chair of the theology department and pastoral counselor at Sacred Heart, was one of the pioneers of this experience. Says Jeanne, “A leadership program like the Charism Connection was designed to give students from both Apostle schools an opportunity to be formed in integrity, courage, compassion, justice, and generosity, always informed by the heart of Christ.” Following the arrival of the six Cor Jesu students, Cor Jesu President Sr. Barbara Thomas, ASCJ, ’71, Principal Sr. Kathleen Mary Coonan, ASCJ, ’76, and theology teacher and retreat coordinator Linda Martin, Sacred Heart Academy students, along with President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71, Principal Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81, and Jeanne

arrived at the rustic setting in Higganum. Immediately the students were struck by the kindred spirit between them; it seemed as if they had known each other for years. As a student participant relates, “As soon as we came together, it didn’t matter that some of us were from Sacred Heart in New England and some from Cor Jesu in the Midwest. This spirit, our kindred spirit, is here in the midst of us. It is present in and through and among us. I can feel it.” The highlight of the week may have been the bond between them but there was also remarkable spiritual growth. Says Jeanne, “Each of the girls became more aware of Mother Clelia’s charism and the way in which this is lived within their daily lives.” In October, thanks to the marvels of technology, the schools held a joint online prayer service in preparation for the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart. Students gathered in their respective gyms and via Skype were able to “meet” online in order to pray and sing together. The prayer service featured reflections from students who attended the Charism Connection, giving those students the chance to reconnect “face to face” for the first time since the summer retreat. “It was really wonderful seeing the Cor Jesu team again,” offers Isabella Siegel ’15. “When we were on the retreat, we felt such a strong connection between the two schools, and we all bonded so easily because of our shared spirit. Over Skype, we could feel that shared spirit again, but this time with the whole school community. It was a really special moment.” In another first, members of the Cor Jesu Academy choir traveled east last spring to visit their sister school and participate in a joint concert in the Mount Sacred Heart Chapel. The girls hit it off immediately comparing schedules, talking about the future, and sharing their love of music. Shares Kanita Mote ’14, “I was surprised by how

(Top) The Charism Connection Teams with the Sisters during their July retreat. (bottom, left) The Sacred Heart Charism Connection Team and (right) praying with Cor Jesu via Skype.

completely similar we are. Befriending the Cor Jesu girls was second nature. But sisters are the most natural of friends, after all.” Now the joint charism of these sister schools is not merely an abstract idea but has been lived out in shared experience. The Charism Connection, joint concert, and joint online prayer service, have created great excitement for what sort of collaborative efforts

the future holds. And through those efforts it is certain that the spirit and charism of Mother Clelia will live on. “Education is not about filling buckets,” says Jeanne, quoting William Butler Yeats. “It is about lighting fires.” We are eager to see how the collaboration between these two schools will spread the fire of love and compassion of the Sacred Heart.

Alumnae Give Back to the Academy Because of the many meaningful experiences our students have at Sacred Heart Academy, many alumnae choose to continue participating in and contributing to school life after graduation. We appreciate all the alumnae who give back to the Academy, whether by volunteering their time, sharing their impressive talents, or making important monetary donations. Our school community owes much of its success to the generosity and continued charitable commitment of our alumnae and friends. How will you give back to Sacred Heart Academy?

Cheryl Cronin ’84

Cheryl Cronin ’84 Professional photographer and alumna Cheryl Cronin has been no stranger to the Academy since she graduated. She serves as the primary photographer for HEART magazine, our website, and various other publications. The decision to use her artistic talent to benefit the school was an easy one: “I had four of my best years at Sacred Heart Academy and have always held it close to my heart. This is the best way I can give back.” After graduating from Fairfield University with degrees in political science and Latin American/Caribbean studies, Cheryl was debating a career in either history or law. While pursuing a master’s degree in history at Wesleyan University, she worked as a paralegal at a law firm in New Haven. Almost by accident, she discovered a love of photography while taking an elective at Wesleyan. Before long, she was juggling her work as a paralegal with part-time photography. Eventually, Cheryl’s photography began taking up the majority of her time, and

14

she moved on from her career in law. After working as a photographer’s assistant for six years, she opened her own business, Cronin Photography, in Branford. Now she is able to live out her passion every day and use her photography to help the Academy. “Photographing relationships is my passion and I have been so blessed to be able to do that as a career,” she says. “I love the energy of Sacred Heart and every time I look through the lens, that energy shines through each and every student and faculty member that I have photographed. They have an excitement that I love to capture, and I always look forward to finding out what fun awaits me when I enter the building.”

Patricia Milazzo Parolise ’72 For Pat Parolise, mother of Kristen Parolise ’08, volunteering as a math tutor at Sacred Heart goes beyond the simple desire to assist students in need of a little extra help. It’s a vocation, one that she felt called to do after chronic back pain forced to her to retire early from a twenty-seven year teaching career.

Patricia Milazzo Parolise ’72

Janet Gambardella Bracale ’77

“I was devastated, and I prayed that God would help me through it and lead me to where he wanted me to be,” she says. “He must have heard me, because a few weeks later, I saw Sr. Mary Jane Paolella, ASCJ, ’65, at morning Mass and knew right then what I was meant to do.”

“Many people with chronic pain feel worthless and stop living. Volunteering at Sacred Heart has freed me from this; it is the escape from my constant pain. I am a cheerleader, an advocate, alive once more in the celebration of my student’s successes!”

Returning to Sacred Heart Academy to tutor spoke not only to Pat’s desire to move forward with her life, but also to show her gratitude for the experience she and her daughter had as students here. As one of five children, her parents made a huge sacrifice in sending her to the Academy. Pat still believes that it was one of the greatest gifts that they gave her. She calls the education of both her heart and her mind while at Sacred Heart simply “priceless.”

Janet Gambardella Bracale ’77

On a deeply personal level, Pat is grateful for the opportunity to be an educator again, sharing herself and her knowledge with students. It’s something she feared she had lost after a difficult surgery and the resulting pain forced her into retirement. “Volunteering has given me a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning,” she offers.

Dance Unlimited studio owner and choreographer Janet Gambardella Bracale, stepmother of Adrianna Bracale ’18, was practically born dancing. Beginning at age two and continuing on through high school, Janet had dance solos in Academy productions of Irene and The King and I. She later attended Quinnipiac University where she thrived, thanks in no small part to her experiences here. “I loved my time at Sacred Heart and it really prepared me for college and for everything that came after,” says Janet. “I learned how to conduct myself in my personal and professional life, which helped when I opened up my own business thirty-three years ago.”

With locations in both Branford and Hamden, Dance Unlimited is a successful business with numerous accolades, including a spot on Dancer Magazine’s list of best dance schools in Connecticut. This year, Janet is lending her expertise and talent to Sacred Heart’s annual musical, Singin’ in the Rain, acting as volunteer choreographer to a cast which includes eight of her studio students. Her daughter, Erica Martone, is also helping choreograph the musical. “Since Sacred Heart is my alma mater and so many of my students are participating, it would have been hard to say no to the opportunity to help,” Janet says. “This year’s musical is not performed often. It’s a rare opportunity to take part in choreographing the tap numbers for a musical that so few people perform.” Janet truly enjoys working with musical director and English teacher MaryLee Delaney as well as the musical’s dedicated cast: “The kids are great. They are so committed and they give so much to me; it makes me happy to give back to them.”

Of Skyscrapers and Bears The Excelsior Summers of SHA Faculty

S

acred Heart Academy students are notorious for their commitment to service and education, even during the summer months. Many students find their calendars brimming with mission trips, summer jobs, internships, immersion programs at universities, and academic workshops. So it should come as no surprise that our teachers, so often an inspiration to their students, also take time during their vacations to enrich themselves. Eileen Halloran ’04, a member of the Social Studies Department, was one of forty teachers selected nationwide to spend a week at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. “The American Skyscraper,” the workshop that she attended, included lectures given by guest architects (one who even Skyped from Hong Kong) and tours of the city to view historic sites. All of this was done, says Eileen, “with a special emphasis on how to bring architecture into the classroom for different disciplines and learners. I’m already planning activities, including a timeline of architectural history with my sophomores.” Eileen also plans to use her experience as a vehicle to get students to think more analytically about history. “Some parts of history are presented as a very simple cause and effect,” she explains. “For example, history textbooks will only tell you that William Le Baron Jenney invented the steel-framed skyscraper, and because of his invention people stopped building heavy masonry structures. In reality, it was a much more complicated transition over time with many far-reaching effects. For instance, many bricklayers – mostly poor immigrants – lost their jobs which triggered strikes and protests that increased the anti-immigrant sentiment in our country.” It is Eileen’s hope that by teaching her students the intricacies of history she can help them overcome common misconceptions and arrive at a deeper appreciation of the past and present.

Lily, the bear that began the adventure.

In the Science Department, Fran Saukas’ love of biology and wildlife inspired her to spend four days in the remote forests of Minnesota. She and six other women observed and interacted with wild bears. This trip was the culmination of a deep passion which began for Fran in 2009. “A fellow AP biology teacher mentioned that there was a dencam in Minnesota. The subject was a pregnant female bear. I checked it out and immediately fell in love with this bear, Lily. Since then I have followed the saga of her life and the lives and deaths of her offspring, as well as other bears that live in the same area.” After following these animals closely for years an opportunity presented itself that she could not refuse when she was invited by the lead biologist of the program to enroll in a field study course on those same bears. So she made her way to the Minnesota wilderness in order to observe and even closely encounter the animals she had known since birth. “I have followed these bears online for five years. To observe them up close was for me like meeting celebrities. Being in the woods with them made me feel a new connection with nature; it was a very spiritual encounter,” she says.

16

When asked about common misconceptions people have about bears, especially their supposed viciousness, Fran offered a wealth of information. “Black bears are often seen by the public as fierce predators. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. They are not predators: their diet consists largely of insect larvae, foliage, berries, nuts, and roots. Their big canine teeth and claws are actually adaptations that allow them to tear apart rotted logs to get at the ant or termite pupae inside. They also use their claws to climb trees. In the very rare event that there actually is a bear attack, it is not due to ferocity. If someone is in a place where a bear is used to seeing humans, it will most likely ignore them. When a bear is surprised by a human, it exhibits bluster behaviors: blowing, clacking teeth, lunging, or even charging. This is a signal that the bear is nervous and one should speak calmly and back off. That will usually end the encounter,” she explains. Especially fascinating is her clarification of long-held wisdom regarding bear attacks. “One should not ‘play dead’ in the presence of a bear.

Where in the

Bears sometimes scavenge dead animal carcasses, so if you were to lie still on the ground, the bear might think you are a dead animal and try to take a taste!” When asked how she intends to bring her experience into the classroom, Fran offered a wide array of ideas. “I use the research from the Bear Center as an example of one way in which science and scientists work. I use hibernations to talk about cellular respiration, and the videos of the birth of cubs and maternal care are useful when talking about reproduction.” Sacred Heart is blessed by the presence of these two teachers, both of whom go to great lengths to enrich themselves in order to enrich their students. In addition to Eileen and Fran, many other teachers also took trips or attended conferences over the summer out of their devotion to education and service. Holy Father Declares 2015 The Year of Consecrated Life to Celebrate Religious Life

WAKE UP T H E WORLD 2015 Year o ! f ConsecrateJourneys Alumnae Reflect on Their Vocational dL ife

“It’s a call to celebrate and grow in our fidelity to the Lord, the Church, our own charisms, and to the people of God.”

Beginning in 2015, the Church will recognize the important work of its religious men and women by celebrating what Pope Francis has designated The Year of Consecrated Life.

“The Holy Father’s plan is to consider this year in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, looking closely at the spirit of Vatican II and recognizing how that spirit is integral to religious life,” says Director of Alumnae Relations and newly appointed Vicar for Religious for the Archdiocese of Hartford, Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77. “It’s a call to celebrate and grow in our fidelity to the Lord, the Church, our own charisms, and to the people of God.” Sr. Mariette describes the three main points that the Holy Father has outlined for those celebrating consecrated life: to embark on a grateful remembrance of the past, to look forward to the future with hope, and to live in the present with passion. –Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77

In her role as Vicar for Religious, Sr. Mariette has been tasked with implementing a number of special events, initiatives, and celebrations in response these points. “Our goal is to start initiatives that will remain long after the year is over. And it’s exciting that this special year can address religious life in many forms, beyond the clergy. We’ve been given the chance with The Year of Consecrated Life to acknowledge the great gift that all religious men and women are and have been to our Church. Life is an adventure, and God’s plan for each one of us is continually unfolding. For me, it's been particularly wonderful to see God’s life unfolding within my own, and my life in His,” she offers.

Sr. Luisa Villegas, ASCJ, ’93 As one of the formation directors for the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sr. Luisa guides young women as they begin their religious vocations. everything about the Apostles, from the way they pray to the way they share in the upkeep of the convent. “When I was teaching at the Academy, I loved providing opportunities for young women to grow in their relationships with God and each other,” she says. “My job as a formation director is a more intense way of continuing that work.” Sr. Luisa knows firsthand the important work of spiritual formation, having attended the Academy for her junior and senior years after relocating to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic with her family. While fulfilling her service requirement at the Clelian Heights School, she was struck with the way the Sisters related to the students, adults, and one another. She entered the Apostles after high school and, after traveling extensively during her own formation, returned to Sacred Heart to teach. SACRED HEART ACADEMY

Sr. Carolyn Severino, ASCJ, ’58 with Saint Mary's students.

Now as a formation director, Sr. Luisa strives to impress the same values upon her novices as she once learned at the start of her own vocation. “It’s an essential part of maintaining any community to be able to form new people in the faith, and help them understand what their charism is and how they can grow that within themselves,” she explains.

Sr. Carolyn Severino, ASCJ, ’58 As with so many others before her, Sr. Carolyn first entertained the thought of becoming a Sister during her junior year at Sacred Heart. That thought was reinforced during her senior retreat, when she had what she calls a “God experience,” which led her to make the decision, on the spot, to pursue a religious vocation. “It was not an easy step, but I knew that was where and how God wanted me to serve Him,” she says. By focusing on education throughout her formation process, Sr. Carolyn gained extensive experience teaching and working as a principal

for a wide range of grade levels. She served an important role in the Faith Formation Program at St. Mary’s Parish in Branford for many years. Now Sr. Carolyn is beginning her third year as principal of St. Mary’s School in Branford, following what she believes was a “direct line from God,” and finding herself open to a host of new experiences.

Tracy Salemme Church ’79

W

hile attending her 35th reunion last summer, Tracy was reminded of the significant pull Sacred Heart Academy still has on her. “I have a lot of good memories,” Tracy says. “Obviously there’s the education, discipline, and strength we built intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. It explains in part where I am in my personal life and my professional life. Sacred Heart Academy was a fabulous, challenging learning environment, with a really wonderful esprit de corps and a family of like-minded young women who wanted to be the best they could be and realize their potential.”

After moving back to Connecticut three years ago with her husband Ed, having lived on the West Coast for several years, Tracy now serves as senior vice president and chief human resources officer for Hartford HealthCare, a network with some 19,000 employees and $2.4 billion in net revenue. what capacity. Her time at Sacred Heart, though, directly influenced the way she viewed the Sisters and the concept of a religious vocation. She credits the dedicated spirit of the Apostles during these years as a major motivator in her own choice to become a Sister following graduation, saying that while her desire was clear, God simply “put the right people in front of me.” Sr. Shawn’s path very closely mimics the heart and spirit of The Year of Consecrated Life. She saw the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus working joyfully together during her time at the Academy and found in them the inspiration to embark on her own vocation. “The Holy Father talks a lot about joy, and about how having a joy-filled presence in what you’re doing every day can just be so contagious. And I think that having that kind of vocational awareness, of appreciating your own vocation publicly, makes it more appealing to others,” she shares.

With nearly three decades of experience in the healthcare field, Tracy says her days at SHA had a major influence on her career choice. “I often point to those formative days and years at Sacred Heart,” she offers. “I’m a HR practitioner and I’ve been in this profession, which I really refer to as my calling, for almost thirty years. It really is about service and leadership, both of which were instilled in us early on at Sacred Heart. I would point to what the Sisters are about and what the mission of the school is about. I get my energy and my passion from helping people who help people.” Now that she’s back in the neighborhood, so to speak, Tracy is once again plugged into Sacred Heart, having recently hosted “a cozy alumnae gathering” at her home where Sr. Shelia O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D. ’71 and Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, ’77 spoke about the school and their vision for its future. Tracy also accepted a recent invitation to join the SHA Advisory Council and serve on the building and maintenance committee. “Serving on the Advisory Council gives me an opportunity to give back to an institution that has given so much to me,” she says. Tracy, who has three grown children, also has a new connection to the school: her niece, Maddie Salemme ’18, enrolled this fall. And for a brief, shining moment, Tracy once again recalled the hold Sacred Heart Academy has on her. “Maddie went through a lovely discernment process. The night before she had to commit, my sister-in-law texted me and said, ‘I think she’s going to do it.’ Maddie then texted me and said she had accepted and I was beaming. I know what this means for her. And I told my brother, ‘This is the first step of a journey that’s going to change her life.’” You inspire us Tracy, this issue’s Excelsior Woman!

New Archbishop Celebrates Enthronement Mass In October, Archbishop Leonard P. Blair, S.T.D., the new Archbishop of Hartford, presided over the Academy’s Annual Enthronement Mass. Enthronement is one of three events on the Sacred Heart calendar that has taken place each year since the school was founded in 1946, along with the May Crowning and the annual musical production. Enthronement often takes place on the First Friday in October in commemoration of the feast day of Saint Mary Margaret Alacoque, who pioneered devotion to the Sacred Heart in the 17th century. “We were delighted to have Archbishop Blair here for this longstanding tradition. At Enthronement, we symbolically crown Jesus as the King and Center of our lives and make our Act of Consecration to His Sacred Heart, reaffirming the vows of our lifetime commitment of faith that we made at our Baptism which we also confirm when we receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony includes a court and one senior is chosen by her class to crown the Sacred Heart,” said President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D.,’71. Senior Lennix Cuffy ’15, an example to all of the virtues expressed by the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was voted unanimously by her class to do the crowning. Sacred Heart Academy students plan the Enthronement Mass, do the readings, and select special music under the direction of Sr. Lany Jo Smith, ASCJ, director of campus ministry. Parents of those in the court are invited to share in this special Mass. Following Enthronement, there was a reception for the Archbishop. He was then given a tour of the school, visited classes, and met with faculty and students. (Above) Archbishop Leonard P. Students and Faculty Illuminated by Saint John’s Bible

22

Sr. Sheila was thrilled that Archbishop Blair, who became the fifth Archbishop of Hartford in 2013, graciously accepted her invitation. We are hopeful that this is the first of many visits from the Archbishop!

In summer 2014, faculty members Sr. Mary Anne Sharron, ASCJ, ’64, Eileen Halloran ’04, and Donna Scaramella attended a workshop entitled Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible at the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven. This handwritten and illuminated Bible, commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey of Collegeville, Minnesota, is the first of its kind to be produced in five hundred years and is currently on exhibit at the museum.

In September, the Sophomore Class, along with their theology teachers, visited this exhibit. There they experienced firsthand what is described as an “extraordinary presentation . . . conceived as an expression of faith relevant to the modern world. It is a visual record of a new generation’s perception and artistic interpretation of an age-old historical and literary document.”

Offered President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, “I am delighted to have Sibani in this role, as she brings a knowledge, love, and loyalty to all things Sacred Heart, experience as an outstanding classroom teacher, and a strong desire to be a part of the administrative team that will continue to lead Sacred Heart as a highly respected Catholic college preparatory school for young woman…true to its motto Excelsior! All of this and more make her a perfect fit for the position of dean of academic affairs.” Dr. Sengupta and her husband, Dr. Tapas Bandyopadhyay, are the proud parents of Mitali ’16 and Ronit.

Sacred Heart Students and Faculty Gather Weekly to Pray for Peace Confronted daily with the growing strife in the world, Math Department Chair Kathy Gniadek decided to respond. She approached Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, ’81 with the idea of praying the rosary in the small school chapel after school for peace. “Our Lady has constantly asked us to do this when she has appeared and Sr. Maureen thought it was a great idea,” shares Kathy. After receiving six hundred rosaries from the Knights of Columbus, Sr. Lany Jo Smith, ASCJ distributed them to the entire student body in September during First Friday Mass. The students were invited to gather on Thursdays after school and pray for peace in the world. “We have been faithful to this since the Thursday after that First Friday Mass,” says Kathy, with the hope that it continues on throughout the school year. 26

Her licenses, certifications, and memberships include: Certified Public Accountant, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. Karen has volunteered by serving on the Executive, Investment, and Finance Committees of the Advisory Council, the Yale University Tercentennial Committee, the Bethany Lutheran Church Stewardship Committee, the United Way of Greater Hartford’s Allocations Committee, and the St. John Lutheran Church Audit and Steering Committees. She also held the position of treasurer at St. John Lutheran Church. Elaborates President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71, “I am thrilled to have Karen as our new chair. She has ardently supported Sacred Heart Academy since her daughter Katie ’10 was a freshman, and she recently endowed a scholarship in memory of her former high school principal. As a former parent and active volunteer, she understands our culture and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the areas of finance and investment.” We wish Karen a fulfilling and productive tenure on the Advisory Council. Sister to Sister — A Sense of Community Across Generations Sister to Sister, one of Sacred Heart Academy’s newest student organizations, connects students with retired Apostles at the Manor where the Sisters reside. Meeting twice a month after school, the club has been a remarkable success, boasting eighty devoted members. The relationships built between the students and Sisters are beautiful examples of the strong bonds formed among those who share an Apostle connection. One such example is the relationship between Sr. Clelia Mazza and Caroline Kohnert ’14. Sr. Clelia had begun knitting an afghan but unfortunately fell ill and did not feel that she would be able to complete it. At a Sister to Sister meeting, Caroline showcased her knitting skills, which inspired Sr. Clelia to ask for her help. “Sister was impressed with Caroline’s knitting skills,” says Karen Walsh Reidy ’74, a moderator of the Knitting Club. “She asked if Caroline would be able to help her complete the afghan, and Caroline was more than happy to help. She completed two of the white strips and I did the third and put them all together. Caroline did a wonderful job.” The afghan stands as a symbol of the sense of community fostered across generations at Sacred Heart Academy.

Dear Friends, Four years ago, Sacred Heart Academy adopted the President/Principal leadership model. Since the arrival of President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ and Principal Sr. Maureen Flynn, ASCJ, the Office of Mission Advancement (OMA) has not only grown in leaps and bounds, but has been refreshed, rededicated, and focused on the responsibility of carrying out the mission of the Academy. With incredible support from alumnae, parents, students, friends, and corporations, our team of ten has accomplished a great deal. I personally thank each and every one of you for all that you have done to help us succeed. Here are some highlights of the ways OMA has changed the face of Sacred Heart Academy: We have more than quadrupled tuition assistance for students needing financial support. In 2010, $100,000 was allocated to financial aid. For the 2014-2015 academic year, more than $500,000 has been designated to students in need. We are proud to report that 33% of our student population is now receiving assistance. We created and implemented Grandparents’ Day for our sophomores, a Legacy Mass for alumnae moms, Catch the Spirit events for new classes, in-home gatherings with alumnae, parents, and friends, and the President’s Club to recognize leadership donors. The Office of Alumnae Relations has reformatted our annual reunion event and moved it to the spring, expanded the Red & White Line in HEART magazine, and developed a young alumnae gathering program at Connecticut colleges. We’ve also changed the look and feel of SHA by revitalizing and expanding HEART and upgrading the Honor Roll of Giving. We’ve revamped our website, added social media to our creative outlets, and started a Heart to Heart blog for our community. The admissions application process has moved to the digital age and is now online and paper free. Special Events have also been enhanced. We now hold the FantaSHA Auction annually, a wine tasting in the fall and, thanks to the efforts of committee members, our Scholarship Golf Tournament is more successful than ever. The Office of Mission Advancement has set and met new challenges. We are thankful to you, the members of the Sacred Heart Academy community, for embracing these challenges with us. This year, in particular, we are extremely grateful for your support of Sacred Heart Academy and its emphasis on excellence in Catholic education. Your gifts enabled us to maintain our strong financial position and exceed our fundraising goals. We are forever grateful for your friendship and your faith in Sacred Heart Academy. With appreciation,

Debbie Camner Director of Mission Advancement

“On Giving” A loyal and longtime donor who supports Sacred Heart through generous monthly gifts and donations to the Annual Fund, Mona Breault Hendrickson ’71 still values the high level of education and sense of community she experienced here as a student. It’s what motivates her to give to the Academy more than forty years after graduating. “My Sacred Heart experience prepared me to go on and accomplish the things I have in life,” she says. “I am not afraid to assert myself as a woman and I have a keen sense of self. If I can help another girl experience these feelings through my giving, it’s worth it.” What Mona has accomplished is indeed impressive. After graduating from Albertus Magnus College in 1975, she began a career with the United States Air Force as an intelligence analyst. She traveled extensively, obtaining her master’s degree in international relations and eventually met her future husband, who was also in the Air Force. The couple is now retired from the service, though her husband, Keith, continues to work as a government employee. They have one son, Kyle, who upheld family tradition by joining the Air Force as well. Meanwhile, Mona keeps busy by “dabbling” in photography and quilting. She and her husband help support children in the Philippines and Guatemala and are involved with organizations that provide assistance to soldiers…the USO, Quilts of Valor, and Wounded Warriors. In addition to her broad charitable reach, Mona continues to give back to SHA because of all it gave to her. “My years at Sacred Heart were the best. I was focused, happy, and secure. I have a lot of pride in the kind of women the school turns out. I hope that Sacred Heart continues to produce women who care about the communities they live in when they choose their careers.” Sacred Heart Academy is incredibly proud of Mona and her accomplishments and we are forever grateful for her recurring monthly gifts. Will you join her? SACRED HEART ACADEMY

The 2013 -2014 Year in

n support of the musical production of Annie, Sacred Heart Academy students raised nearly $67,000 selling advertisements for the 2013 Ad Campaign. In return, the school purchased new flat screen televisions for the cafeteria as well as televisions and Mac computers for the library. High-tech rewards for a job well done!

Thanks to more than 100 parent volunteers, the gymnasium glittered in gold, feathers, and pearls with more than 300 guests dressed for the occasion. The decadence of the 1920s was displayed with over150 beautiful baskets, over 400 silent auction items, and incredible live auction gifts. The highlight of the evening was Hands Up for Heart, which raised more than $70,000 in support of need-based scholarships. Many thanks to the Hands Up committee, chaired by Robert Nastri, for a job well done!

Jacqueline O'Brien ’16 with her grandparents.

Sophomores and their grandparents enjoyed a continental breakfast, a Spanish language presentation, songs performed by the cast of Annie, and a special cheer from the cheerleaders during the fifth annual Grandparents’ Day. The morning included a beautiful prayer service in the Chapel honoring the “strong bonds” between granddaughters and their grandparents. Special thanks to Kathy McGarry ’77 for sharing her photography talent with us that day. On the First Friday of Advent, students celebrated the legacy tradition with alumnae mothers and grandmothers at the annual Legacy Mass. Guests were greeted by the “Greene Street Girls” who served as representatives from the original 1950s graduating classes. Our FantaSHA Auction 2014 raised more than $150,000 in support of Sacred Heart Academy. Hosted by chairs David and Kristen Falls “The Roaring Twenties – Gatsby Style” was certainly a swell affair with a twenties flair!

The foursome of Emmett Christie, Bill Christie, Cindy Christie, and Mike McConville.

The sun shone brightly for the 22nd Annual Sacred Heart Academy Golf Tournament which took place in May at the Wallingford Country Club. With the help of many sponsors, donors, and golfers, more than $34,000 was raised to benefit the Golf Tournament Scholarship Fund, enabling more young women in need of financial assistance to attend the Academy. The day was “FORE the girls,” but was enjoyed by all. Thank you to parent chairs Pat Bowman and David Ditta, and the entire golf committee, for making this year’s tournament a huge success.

ongratulations to Sr. Judith Musco, ASCJ, ’61 and Sr. Christine Kiley, ASCJ, ’61 who are celebrating their golden jubilees this year, commemorating fifty years of consecrated life as Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sr. Judith is dean of student activities, new teacher mentor, and teaches math at the Academy. She was also honored during the First Friday Mass in April in front of the entire Sacred Heart Academy community. Reunion Day 2014 Feeling blessed…what a glorious Reunion 2014! Many, many thanks, especially to Sr. Mariette, who is the heart of the Alumnae Association. Her dedication and tireless effort are at the root of all we accomplish. Thanks, also, to the many alumnae and current students who helped on Friday and Saturday – you are true treasures! And last, but not least, to all the alumnae who attended, celebrating their respective reunions – it was heartwarming to see you reconnect, remember, and reaffirm your friendships and ties to Sacred Heart Academy. The culminating Mass with Bishop Rosazza and the superb soloists Cheryl DeMaio Lombardo ’74, Carissa Terranova Mastriano ’94, and Andrea Sanchez ’15 – was a beautiful way to end such a memorable day. Looking forward to next year and hoping many of you will join us. Excelsior! – Barbara Tracchio Romano ’60 Reunion Committee Chair

It was a very special day! I remember Sacred Heart days fondly. We were cared for so well by the Sisters. It felt that way at Reunion ’14 as well. Thanks for the memories! - Beth Flannery ’89

“The four short years we were here as students truly have had such an everlasting impact that as alumnae we carry with us throughout our adult lives. I’m sure all would agree that our SHA experience is truly the fabric woven into all of our lives. It was an awesome event — I will never forget Reunion ‘14!”

cafeteria, a classroom, or the Chapel and feeling like it was all just yesterday – not twenty years later. As time passes, the more I appreciate SHA for its education, community, and ability to bring us all together to laugh and reminisce ‘like it was yesterday,’ reminding us that we will always be part of the SHA community.” - Kate Peccerillo ’94
