INTRO: Hi everyone, Welcome to our 3rd issue of S40 Local. We’ve now delivered over 8000 copies and I‘m glad to say that the word is spreading. We have many new local businesses and tradesmen who are keen for us to shop with them or use their local services, we’ve expanded to 24 pages too! Much of this growth is down to you with your interest and input to the community page and ‘What’s On’ guide. I’ve been contacted about the services and items we’ve listed and feedback is still very positive about what we’re doing. Please keep it coming to mail@S40local.co.uk it’s great to get your messages and it means people across our community can get together or find out what’s happening round the corner. Don’t forget, we want to hear from you if you; • Can share information or write an article about something relevant to S40 • Want to advertise your business to the 4000+ addresses & 13,000 readers in the distribution area • Are organising a local event and want people in S40 to come along and support you we list this for free on the “What’s on Page” • Have any ideas to improve the magazine • Have taken a great local photo that we can feature on the front cover. A plea from us at S40 Local – if you need services, keep it local, use the people in S40 local and tell them where you saw the advert. This is especially important for the shops as I’m not sure this feedback always gets back to the proprietors. But back to this issue – lot’s of activity in the community, it’s bike week in June and the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign are organising events to get us on our bikes, so check out their article. The 3rd Brampton Scout Group have been in touch, so have a look at their article and see if you can spot anyone you know. Oh and don’t forget Fathers Day on the 21st June – perhaps he’s always fancied learning the guitar, or you could treat him to a Chinese take away, pampering treatments at one of the beauty salons, beers from the brewery, fitness club membership or (perhaps a little excessive) a new bike? Anyway any of these services can be sourced locally through businesses advertising in S40 Local, so we know a man who can, so to speak. Thanks again for all your support and please remember to mention S40 Local! Paul. Call: Email:

Chesterfield Cycle Campaign & Bike Week What is it? The Chesterfield Cycle Campaign was formed as a pressure group to try to improve the infrastructure for cycling in the Chesterfield area and we currently have over 300 members. We believe that cycling can be a realistic sustainable transport solution for journeys around the town. We have regular meetings and dialogue with both Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council to further our aims. Members receive a quarterly newsletter which is available to non members at various outlets in Chesterfield. Our next edition will be published in June to coincide with Bike Week. How can I get involved in Bike Week? We will be holding various events during Bike Week as below to which anyone is invited. Saturday 13th June: A cycling information stall in New Square together with 'Dr Bike' where you can come and get a free check up on your bike. Sunday 21st June: We will lead a 10 mile ride from Tapton Lock Visitors Centre at 2.00pm out through Inkersall and back along the canal using the Trans Pennine Trail. Wednesday, 24th June: We have an evening ride starting from outside the Queen's Park Cafe at 6.30pm. This one is about 4 miles, out along the Holmebrook Valley Trail, across Ashgate on quiet roads and back to the park on the Hipper Valley Trail. Alternatively why not make the biggest change and try cycling to work if you’ve not done it before. There is a growing network of safe cycleways across Chesterfield which may well enable you to get where you need and avoid major roads and routes. Still not convinced? Check out www.ehow.com/how_2312216_making-excuses-not-bikingwork.html it features the 7 most refuted reasons why people won’t bike to work and offers ways round them. So go on get on you bike and get involved. More details of Bike Week events and much more can be found on our website www.chesterfieldcc.org.uk. If you are interested in becoming a CCC member the please get in touch, the greater our members numbers the more chance we have of making a difference. Contact the Secretary, Alastair Meikle tel 01246 520820 or via the website above.

Local Artist Wins Country Living Magazine Award Brought up in S40, local girl Clare Gage has been awarded the 2009 Editor’s Choice Award at the Country Living Spring Fair in Islington, London. The five day event showcases the country’s most talented artists and small businesses and it was Clare’s first time exhibiting this year. Her fledgling business needed to keep costs down so Clare’s stand was in a ‘shabby chic’ style, made from salvaged wood and cupboard doors rescued from a skip. The materials were restored and remodelled to make an elegant display for Clare’s textile inspired ceramics. The stand was put together with help from the businesses around her studio on Chatsworth Road: Ian Morris donated many of the materials, Rebecca

from Hudson’s florist and Libby Morris helped with everything from packaging to styling the stand. “Richard Wood does most of the building work around four7nine and generously donated his time to build the stand. My whole family mucked in with stripping cupboard doors to stitching hessian curtains. I couldn’t have done it without them” said Clare. Much to everyone’s surprise and delight, Clare was presented with the Editor’s Choice award at the end of the fair’s first day. This award is selected personally by the editor of Country Living magazine and means that Clare has been invited back to the 2010 event with a free stand. She was also presented with a congratulatory bottle of champagne which she shared with all those who made her win possible.

CARA’s CHALLENGE If any of you have been wondering how Cara got on with her Challenge she has been in touch. “Thank you so much for your help in raising awareness of my challenge - we've had an amazing response, and several people have mentioned S40 Local when sending me donations, so you're obviously doing a good job with readership! Some of the people I don't even know, so it's amazing - thank you! So far I am up to £3,809.77 and it is still coming in, I can't believe it.

Incinerator Update In our 1st issue Julie Harrington wrote an article outlining plans for a Commercial Hazourdous and Non-Hazardous waste incinerator on Dunston Road in Chesterfield. Julie informs us “a decision on the planning application will be made by Derbyshire County Council after the June elections. We have more information of jobs at risk if plans for the incinerator go ahead and of the list of waste types that are likely to be burned there. We are keen for people to make up their own minds and encourage you to look at the application and our website (www.againstincineration.org.uk) to understand both sides. However, if you are concerned please write to Derbyshire's Planning Department, via Kevin Finn quoting ref: CW2/0708/56 or email kevin.finn@derbyshire.gov.uk. You can also join the Chesterfield Against Incineration Facebook page to keep up to date with our campaign .” Walton Evangelical Church Services are every Sunday, 10.30am and 6.30pm – all welcome and they have a Kids Friday Club (KFC) for all primary school aged children: Fridays 6.157.30pm

The first half marathon in the vale of Belvoir was nice and steady, I ran with a colleague and it was his first half marathon - we finished in 1 hour 44 minutes, which was excellent for his first race. However, the following week the London Marathon was a different ball game. I developed a knee injury 4 weeks before but had taken things steady so as not to aggravate it. The marathon was an amazing race and the crowds were unbelievable, but at mile 19 my knee became very painful and just got worse and worse. Then at mile 22 I saw my brother and he gave me such a big cheer I just had to keep going. The crowds pulled me the rest of the way and I finished in 4 hours and 2 minutes, but at least I completed the course. Needless to say, the last half marathon in Trieste was tough as my knee hadn't recovered, but the atmosphere was great and the sun was shining, so I can't complain! I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported me, whether it be with sponsorship, or with amazing support every step of the way. I wouldn't have been able to complete this challenge without this support, everyone's encouragement has been invaluable. Thank you so much, from me, but also on behalf of the charities I have run for - Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Parkinson's Disease and Diabetes UK. Thanks again for your help and support Paul, I really appreciate it.” Cara
