Greetings from Lynn... Welcome to the Christmas edition of Evelyn’s Portraits. Spring is finally around the corner. Hopefully we can put this wet and wild winter behind us and start to enjoy our village gardens again! The village has been very busy with our Romeo & Juliet celebrations. It was great to see everyone get behind it! October was Wellness Month, which we celebrated with some fun activities. During the summer, we will be helping out at the Orewa Boulevard Festival. We will be driving a shuttle for the public and the money raised will be going to our Ryman charity, Alzheimer’s NZ. The silly season is fast approaching and we have a range of great activities for you to

get involved in, including Christmas dinners, carols by candlelight and the santa parade. I will be away during Christmas to spend some time with my family in England, but you will be in safe hands with Raewyn McLachlan and Karen Sears. Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year! in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

Romeo & Juliet Our village celebrated the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet with a fantastic masquerade ball. The village centre was filled with colourful gowns and gorgeous masks. It was lovely to see the staff and residents mingle on the dancefloor, two lovely young men from our local school joined in and took the residents for a spin around the dancefloor. Everyone also had the opportunity to take some memorable photos in our very own photo booth. It was a very popular spot as everyone wanted a snap or two to mark the event. We loved the masquerade and we hope everyone enjoyed it too.

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus will combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.

“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.” Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations.

America's Cup Parade We might be crazy Aucklanders but when the New Zealand team wins the America’s Cup we have to go and see their winning parade. The team made everyone proud by finally winning the “Auld Mug” in Bermuda earlier this year after a very disappointing loss against the USA in 2013.

“Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused.

The team’s march down Queen Street was an event not to be missed! Unfortunately, the weather didn’t really do us any favours but it was nothing that a raincoat and a brolly couldn’t fix.

Christmas tree cookies Makes approx 10 trees Ingredients: • 2 cups flour • ½ tsp baking soda • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 1 cup (220g) firmly packed soft brown sugar • 150g butter

1 egg Cookie cutter, one shape varying sizes

Royal icing sugar: • 2 egg whites • 2 cups icing sugar • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Sift flour, baking soda and ground ginger together in a bowl. Add butter. 3. In a separate bowl beat the egg and sugar until light and fluffy. 4. Mix everything together. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes. 5. Roll out on a lightly floured surface and cut out the shapes. 6. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden.

Keep an eye on the smaller cookies so that they don’t burn. 7. Remove from oven and cool on baking rack. 8. Assemble the tree by using a bit of icing sugar between the layers. Royal icing sugar: Beat egg whites in clean, large bowl with mixer at high speed until foamy. Gradually add sugar and vanilla extract. Beat at high speed until thickened.

Cashin Scholarship open for entries Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life. Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle. Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time. Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply. Entries close November 24. For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com

Weekend special

During August, the spec ial care unit residents proved once and for all that pineapple belongs on pizza as they created delicious Hawaiian pizzas. Everyone helpe d out to garnish the tw o pizzas and of course th ey then devoured them . It was a great treat and we will definitely do th is again. The only thing to decide is what type we want to make next!

Introducing William Locking Hello! My name is William Locking and I am the van driver for Evelyn Page. I love the atmosphere and kindness of the village. I was born and grew up in Birmingham, England. I am a qualified plasterer and for five years I worked for the local council. I met my wife Angela in 2005 in Birmingham while she was on vacation. Angela was also originally from Birmingham but had immigrated to New Zealand in 1982. After two wonderful years in England together we decided to make a permanent move to New Zealand. I have now been here for nearly half my life and love the lifestyle, the beaches and the outdoors. In my time here, I have

been fortunate to work in sport. I completed a sport’s diploma and have been working in football for over 10 years. I decided l with ith to contract into other sports tto h help fundraising, sponsorship and marketing. All my life I have been either playing football, or working in it, and now my two children, Jessica (7) and William (4) also play. olin C & s i o L t Mee Meet Lois and Colin McGough. In 1964, Lois and Colin met at a local dance in Auckland. Lois came from a railway background, and Colin, then a student at Auckland University, came from a farm in Waikato. Wedding bells rang in 1967 and by the late 70s Lois was a stay-at-home mum to a growing family. Colin became a lecturer at Auckland University of Technology, finally retiring in 2012. When health problems arose in their late sixties, it became obvious that a change

of lifestyle was needed, and moving from their home in Stanmore Bay to a retirement village was the preferred option. They visited several villages but, while each had their own congenial atmosphere, Evelyn Page ticked all the boxes. In 2011, they moved into their new apartment. They have two sons living in the Waikato and a daughter in Auckland, each with young families. Lois and Colin really enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, especially when they come to stay. Not too many children can boast of staying the night in a retirement village! They both love their sport, with outdoor bowls remaining a firm favourite. Writing has become a special joy for Lois, while Colin – with wry acknowledgement to the enforced piano practice endured in his youth – spends many enjoyable hours playing the village piano. They believe the decision to move to Evelyn Page was absolutely the best for them. In their own words “we love being a part of the ‘Corsair Bay Family’ and really enjoy the ongoing good fellowship and peace of mind the village gives us.”

Midwinter breakfast We jumped at the chance to treat our residents to a midwinter solstice breakfast. We decorated the dining room in blue and silver to create a winter wonderland. Once again, the chef delighted us with his fantastic creations, including the all-time Kiwi favourite bacon and eggs. It was a cold winter’s morning but we greeted the residents with a glass of champagne or juice and a smile to ward off the cold.

A day with the cowboys Our residents love an opportunity to dress up and to dance, so we decided to combine the two! We hosted a barn dance as our monthly village event and decorated accordingly – right down to the hay bales! The residents dressed the part with boots, cowboy hats and denim. The whole shebang! The kitchen provided yummy southern fried chicken, pecan pie and even a pumpkin pie. The band played some great tunes and no one wanted it to end!
