Meet Don

A precious showcase

Greetings from Louise... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Charles’s Chapters.

What a great way to learn about a culture different to our own.

Despite the cold weather we've had some pristine winter days that make living in Kapiti so great!

In other news, our care team is very excited to roll out the myRyman Care app. This new system means that staff will have more time to spend with residents as there is less paper work because everything is done electronically. There will also be a tablet available in every resident's room.

What a busy time we've had since our last edition! We've enjoyed many great events at the village, the Rose Party and the mid-winter solstice celebrations were both highlights. Another great event was our harvest auction. A big thank you to the kitchen and activities teams for all their hard work. Throughout July we are celebrating International Month with various activities and events to showcase our fantastic culture. Our Filipino staff will introduce their culture to our residents through stories, culinary delights and dance!

Remember to stay warm and wrapped up, and if you have any queries my door is always open. Kind regards,

Louise Trilloe Village Manager

A musical moment Recently the village welcomed Ryman favourite the Andrew London Trio for an afternoon of music. The Trio once again delighted and entertained our residents and visitors. As always we enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea to conclude the concert. We are looking forward to their next visit! Katie

Our Rose Party Recently the village centre was transformed for our fabulous Rose Party. We chose the theme as we thought it would complement our gardens. The residents from all areas loved it and proceeded to wear rose coloured garments, fascinators, jewellery and a few gentlemen sported rose button holes! On the night Double Blend provided entertainment, and the dance-floor was filled with residents and staff enjoying their evening. Our fabulous kitchen provided us with plenty of yummy finger food, which was quickly devoured. Dessert was a delicious selection of cheeses and lemon meringues. It was a very successful night and we can’t wait for the next one! Above: Ruby Lawrence and Janice King on the dance floor. Right: Residents Ray and Sandra Savory.

It’s got to be

good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.

“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Don

a percussion band, which I joined because I was interested in playing drums. I thoroughly enjoyed the classes, and the positive experience meant that I eventually chose teaching as my career. I emigrated to Aotearoa with my first wife when I was 23 years old. At the time, the New Zealand Government was actively looking for teachers, and from Britain it was arranged that my first job in New Zealand would be at Nelson College. My next job was at the Wellington Polytechnic where I taught physics, electronics and electrical theory. I was very happy there and I stayed until I retired. The academic life, creative thinking, discussing new theories in the field, and the ability to pass my skills and knowledge to younger generations, has always been my passion and has kept me going.

I retired early and travelled around the world… I started a bucket list of things I wanted to do. Hello, my name is Don Brooks and I am a hospital resident. I was born in Bristol, England on 11 February 1936. When I was six or seven, my parents sent me to Miss Downing, a music teacher, in order to learn to play the piano. Miss Downing also ran

I retired early and travelled around the world. I have visited all the continents! I started a bucket list of things I wanted to do. The first one was walking in the Grand Canyon and the next was to see Mount Everest. Later, I went on a safari in Africa and even flew over to Antarctica. Now I find myself here at Charles Fleming and couldn’t be happier.

A visit from Zippity Zoo We had the most unusual visitors recently, and our hospital residents were delighted and amused by our four-legged guests. A donkey, goat, sheep, several rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens all came, along with Beverly, the owner of Zippity Zoo. The animals were very well behaved

and our residents loved spending time with them. Everyone wanted to pet the donkey. It certainly was a memorable visit and we can’t wait for the next one! Pictured: Residents Monica Wilson and Margaret Dean.

Pink Ribbon Breakfast

A delicious treat

We held our village’s first ever Pink Ribbon Breakfast and it was a great success. Everyone got in the swing of things and wore pink, and we had a raffle and challenging puzzles. At the end of the day we raised just under $700 for the Breast Cancer Foundation! Well done!

Our staff decided to help make pikelets for our resthome residents. Everyone was very excited and the residents queued up for the delicious treat. It was such a tremendous success and we will be prepared for the next onslaught!

Introducing Lisa

amazing, they are caring and kind. Recently, I won the Staff Appreciation Award; I am honoured that my colleagues believe that I am an amazing person and that I am hardworking. I love doing my best for the residents and the rest of the staff. I look after the village like my own home and I am honoured that I can be of service to this wonderful village. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

A precious showcase Recently we invited serviced apartment residents to bring a precious object to an afternoon showcase. Everyone had the chance to talk about their particular object, and to share their memories of why this piece was so important to them. We had some wonderful and interesting objects. Some were very old – such as an old Christmas card dating back to the 18th century! This was a fascinating afternoon and the residents really enjoyed the session. Of course, we also enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea supplied by the fabulous Charles Fleming kitchen. Above: Resident Lois Roberts brought her 3D picture that she had made a few years ago. We were all very impressed. She has a few of them hanging in her room. Well done Lois.
