CELEBRATING MILESTONES Dear Friends, During the Y’s Centennial year, I’ve been thinking about milestones. From the time we’re born, we are always moving forward, reaching new milestones with every achievement or life stage. From a baby’s first steps to high school graduation, from marriage to retirement, we stop to celebrate or at least take note of the goal post we’ve just passed. If we’re lucky, or determined enough, we find ways to challenge ourselves throughout our lives, keeping new milestones always in sight.

February, 2003 - grand re-opening of the Y after our expansion/renovation project

This year, the Rye Y is celebrating 100 years of supporting the hopes, dreams, resolutions, and milestones of our members. Ask any member about their family’s Y experience, and chances are you’ll tap memories that span the generations. From the senior citizen who fondly recalls his first job as a counselor at Camp Mohican to the young parent watching her child learn to swim, our members can say “the Y was there for me when…” A milestone is a moment in time (even if it’s celebrated for a whole year!). It can signal the end of an era, but it is not the end. Like our members, the Rye Y is always growing, improving, moving forward, reaching for the stars. I hope you will join us as we celebrate your milestones and ours during this very special Centennial year.

Gregg Howells Rye Y Executive Director

The Y: We're for Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility

FOR COMMUNITY Inch by Inch, Row by Row

Take one curious child. Add dirt, water, seeds, sunshine and a few good teachers. It’s a recipe for learning, for growth, for confidence. We believe that giving students the opportunity to garden fosters healthy eating and physical activity habits that last a life time. As Angel Torres, a 4th grader at JFK Magnet School in Port Chester remarked “I like to harvest and plant outside because it's fun to get your hands dirty.” Gardening also gives kids the opportunity to think about the bigger issues: where does my food come from? How is it grown? Does everyone in my community have access to healthy food? And it allows teachers to present classroom curriculum in fun, engaging ways, connecting math, science, writing, and technology with the natural world. Since 2008, the Rye YMCA has supported schoolbased edible gardens by connecting schools with the resources they need to start, expand or sustain their gardens. We’ve secured grants that have helped 6 schools in Rye, Mamaroneck, Rye Neck and Port Chester start or enhance edible gardens. We’ve hosted two major workshops that brought together parents, teachers and gardening experts to share information and inspiration. And we’ve conducted an online survey to learn more about the successes and challenges facing schools that have, or want, gardens so we can support their efforts. Fall is the bountiful season, the season of harvest, of children returning to school inches taller, ready to learn and grow and get their hands dirty. What better way to launch the new year than in an outdoor classroom?

FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES “It’s hard to write this note without tears. Having been in one of the most painful seasons of transition for many months, our new Y membership comes as no small miracle. I am not exaggerating when I say that the generous assistance for a single parent family membership has sparked fresh courage and creativity that the 'new normal' of our future will be good. More than good. I am so grateful to be able to take my little ones swimming, enroll my daughter in camp, and in general be part of such an amazing community. Thank you.” – note from a Y Cares financial aid recipient
