’ve got into a habit of checking the newsstand at Starbucks while waiting for my Americano. This is not a surprise given the latest developments in Ukraine that claim the front-page headlines of New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal alike. I get media requests to share some insight about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict almost every day. It’s understandable, since I represent one of the largest media companies serving Slavic immigrants here, in the US. However, despite my personal insight and all the first-hand information I have at my disposal I prefer to give no comments on the matter.

The truth is, seeing the Russian-Ukraine conflict escalading is the same as watching your two children getting in a nasty fight.

You may have an opinion on who’s right and who’s wrong, but the fact that the two that grew together and share the same blood and history now clash in a bloody fight is just heartbreaking. And as long as the fight goes on, there can be no winner because no matter who overtakes, my heart will still be broken for the other.

Our Slavic community is a blend of cultures that fuse together without eluding their distinct identity. That’s what makes our Slavic heritage so vibrant and unique. I’ve learned that in my early

CONFLICT years when I listened to my grandfather singing “Взяв би я бандуру,” a traditional Ukrainian song, while my grandmother was pulling hot Russian pirozhki from the oven. And we lived in Uzbekistan. No, Russians and Ukrainians are not the same.

And neither are hundreds of other ethnic groups that share the Slavic heritage.

We are all different, and yet, we all have something in common – the legacy of the Slavic culture weaved throughout the years of history.

Unfortunately, I can’t affect the decisions made by the President of Russia or the government of Ukraine. I can’t advise the leaders of the European Union on a way to handle the escalating tension. What I can do, is encourage my community to exercise the freedoms we have here, in the United States. Make a difference where we can - in our family, our neighborhood, our country. Pass down our culture to our children while teaching them to embrace diversity and inclusion. Exercise our right to vote, and elect the people we trust to make decisions on our behalf.

This is the reason why for over ten years Russian American Media has been putting together the International Kids Festival which allows children to share their traditions while embracing other cultures.

This is the reason why we organize our

Annual Russian-Speaking Community Partners Reception at the California State Capitol, where Slavic constituents can personally meet their elected officials.

So, as I glance at the newsstands, I can only hope the decisions which our politicians make are the right ones. I hope we can learn to solve conflicts in an intelligent manner. I hope Ukrainians get to preserve their nation and their homeland. I hope Russian residents of Eastern Ukraine can live in peace knowing nothing threatens them to speak their language, and keep their culture. I hope our governments learn to collaborate with their neighbors instead of threatening their borders. Hope is our only remedy when it comes to the things we cannot change. The exhibit is a humorous yet provocative commentary on global consumer culture.

It shows that for Israelis it is not enough to accept the packaging of everyday life, routines and rituals.

The Consulate decided to bring this exhibit to San Francisco to capture part of the essence of Israel’s creative energy. We must go further in examining the most common habits, objects and behavioral patterns.

Without this constant selfexamination and creative reinterpretation, we cannot progress as a society and as a nation.

am probably not the most qualified guy to write about this subject.

I am not Russian, nor do I have any advanced education in history or geography. I am just an ex-cop, and former bounty hunter who once made his living chasing down some of California’s most notorious criminals. When I became too old to fight, but still young enough to know I did not like getting beat up, I traded my guns and handcuffs for a shovel and a tractor.

I quickly learned that the wine grapes my father planted in my hometown of Lodi, California were not getting the international recognition they deserved.

This was negatively impacting the price of my father’s grapes, and our neighboring grape growers around us.

I originally thought that Russian immigration to California began in mid 1980’s. A quick tour of some of California’s iconic landmarks would suggest otherwise.

FASCINATED WITH ALL THINGS “RUSSIAN” A Personal Journey of Discovering the Roots of Russian Immigration to California So in 2006, I went on my own personal journey: to figure out a way to introduce some of the very best Lodi, California wines to every corner of the world. I initially chose to focus my energies in two places: China and Russia. Today these countries are home to two of the fastest growing imported wine markets in the world. I already had a few close Chinese American friends that could help me better understand their culture, but I did not know even one Russian-speaking person. That all changed once I was introduced to а few local Russians who are now my very dear friends. Although I am still far from being any kind of expert on the subject, I immediately became fascinated with all things “Russian”.

Like I suppose most Americans, I originally thought that nearly all

Russian immigration to California began somewhere in the mid 1980’s through 90’s. After all, this was the time when the now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was first on the brink of becoming a failed state.

Immigrants from the now 15 separate countries that make up the former USSR came to America in droves eager to work hard and create a better life for themselves and their families. Today the greater Sacramento region alone is home to over 250,000 Russian-speaking people. I have personally found them to represent some of the most industrious, patriotic and grateful Americans I have ever met. But does this wonderful, vibrant community truly represent California’s first Russian immigrants? A quick tour of some of California’s iconic landmarks would suggest otherwise.

First named “Slavyanka” – or “Glorious” in Russian, I am told this river resembles the homeland to the keen Russian eye. It still has plenty of tall standing historic redwood trees that can provide much-desired shade on a hot summer day. The current is gentle and is relatively safe for boating, swimming and fishing.

Only a couple of hours drive from Sacramento, the Russian River has become one of the favorite “off the beaten path” destinations. It still has the feel of a wild and natural wonderland, offering an eclectic variety of accommodations and unfortunately often fully booked campgrounds. It’s close to several magnificent beaches and has some of the best farm-to-fork restaurants in all of California. If you are looking for Kremlin-like architecture or former KGB agents, you will be sorely disappointed. On the other hand, if a large city is something you are looking forward to escape from, I encourage you to take a drive down “Moscow Road” along the Russian River.

Recently while taking a relaxing cruise up California’s gorgeous Highway One with my girlfriend, we stumbled across Fort Ross in Sonoma County. Fort Ross is located on a wave-cut marine terrace between the ocean to the southwest and the coastal hills to the northeast. The park contains 3,400 acres of spectacular wild lands. According to the parks website www.fortross.org “In addition to touring the fort compound, historic orchard, and Russian cemetery, Fort Ross State Historic Park promises fantastic vistas, a front-row seat to the Pacific Ocean, and more”. “More” being quite the understatement. This breath-taking beautiful place was once the southernmost Russian settlement in North America, primarily between 1812 and 1842. Fort Ross served as an agricultural base from which northern Russian settlers in Oregon, Washington and Alaska could be supplied with food. Most of this settlement was predicated upon a strong desire to do trade with the residents of then Alta California.

In 1841, John Sutter purchased Fort Ross from the Russian-American {Fur} Company, but some say he never paid the promised amount.

Safe to say the statute of limitations to initiate a civil lawsuit has expired.

Today many modern day Russian-speaking Americans can still be found hiking around Fort Ross, especially during the mushroom and abalone season, but this fabulous state historic park truly belongs to all who are inspired by its incredible nature and fascinating history.

Named after a Ukrainian seaport located on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula, this “big little town” is a place where the art-loving community from the San Francisco Bay Area can find its nature refuge. Previous apple and plum orchards have mostly been replaced with premium wine grapes. Similar to “Moscow” on the Russian River, Sebastopol is breathtakingly beautiful and serene, yet bares little resemblance to its original namesake.

One thing that both Sebastopols have in common is their vicinity to the sea. The California Sebastopol is only 20 minutes away from Bodega Bay, which also has its own unique Russian history. Ivan Kuskov and his crew of 130 native Alaskan males, 20 native females and 40 Russians came hunting for sea otters. Between January and October of 1809 they gathered over 2000 sea otters pelts which they brought back to Alaska. Today’s

Alaskans and Russian Americans are much more likely to donate to a non-profit dedicated to the protection of sea otters rather than to kill even one of these beautiful, endangered animals.

Many landmarks of California remind us that Russian immigration is not new, nor in many ways all that unique. Throughout history, ordinary people have been motivated to travel in order to improve their lives. While a sword in the hand can often create change faster, mutually beneficial international trade has proven throughout history to create much longer lasting positive results. Although often not celebrated, the struggles and triumphs of everyday common people is what creates the best history.

I personally prefer to sell California grown food and wine at a fair price as opposed to fighting in the streets. After all, there is enough room in the sandbox for us all to walk in.

RUSSIAN HILL

A quick tour of some of California’s most iconic landmarks would suggest otherwise.

RUSSIAN HILL: This prestigious neighborhood in San Francisco includes Ghirardelli Square, “the world’s most crookedest street”, the San Francisco Art Institute, and some of the most incredible views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands.

Prior to the Gold Rush era this was just yet another green hill, favored first by elks and then by Spanish horses. Spanish explorers named this area “Yerba Buena” – for its year-round tall, juicy grass that was perfect for their livestock. Today a different kind of “good herb” can be found there, but I digress.

Things changed dramatically after the ships of “gold diggers” started to arrive to the Port of San Francisco in great numbers during the mid-19th century. Crossing the Pacific was a daring adventure at the time and many sailors died in the journey. The ship commanders chose the hill as a site for the cemetery for those somewhat lucky souls who did not get thrown overboard. If you believe in ghosts, visit Russian Hill at night.

If you are really interested in the Russian history of San Francisco, visiting the Richmond District is a much better choice. Make sure to check out the spectacular Holy Virgin Church on 6210 Geary Street.

ne of the greatest indicators to knowing where you are headed in life is by looking at where you have come from.

Beyond looking at your own life, understanding your culture and heritage shed light on the great things you might accomplish in the future.

Like many of my friends in Sacramento, I’m a first generation immigrant who is at a crossroad of fully embracing a new culture, or keeping alive the traditions of my ancestors. Slavic history is embedded with great minds that have transformed the way the world thinks, from novelists such as Fyodor Dostoevsky to psychologists known as Isaac Pavlov and chemists, Dmitry Mendeleev. My family comes from Belarus a country near Russia and Ukraine, and one of the greatest things that I have been taught is to always be there for my community. In Eastern Slavic countries, a helping hand is never too far away when someone needs it and communities strive, by helping one another. The culture here in the United States is more individualistic and each person tries to build their own empire of success, but there is no longer a sense of oneness and community. One of the first things immigrants lose when they move to a new country is their sense of identity and upbringing and are quickly swept away by the nuances of everyday life. I want to revive these principles in our community here in Sacramento and would love to see us all unite and embrace who we are so we can all help each other become history makers. Instead of bringing each other down we need to build each other up, so that we can open doors for the next generation of Slavic people in Sacramento. Everyone has their strengths and talents, and when we combine our different talents we can truly impact this city in a phenomenal way.

Another cornerstone of Slavic society has been fashion and expressing their sophisticated ideologies through extravagant clothing. I was taught since childhood to always present myself in the utmost professional manner wrapped in a sense of beauty. I want this part of our identity to continue to live on and accomplish this by encouraging fashion, for appearances change how people are perceived. The way we dress and look has a powerful impact on our credibility, and our voices will never

“Blue” competed successfully for a dozen years, and sired offspring who are proving his value as a sire of performance horses. In a limited career, “Blue” amassed a rather phenomenal record. He completed the “Tevis Cup” 100 Mile Endurance Race five times out of five attempts, which is a world record for a stallion.

HERITAGE If horseback riding along the beach and ocean kayaking in the sea caves can freeze precious moments in your memory, the next adventure we recommend will take you back in time. Take a ride on the historic Skunk Train that departs from Fort Bragg and experience a fantastic journey through miles of railroad run through the majestic redwood forests, scenic mountain meadows, and over 30 trestles bridging the pristine mountain waters of Northern California.

The railroad originated in the late 1800s and was used to accommodate loggers during the timber rush. The view alongside of the railroad has pretty much remained unchanged. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery from a cushy seat in one of the covered cars or step outside onto the open car and experience the scenery firsthand while grasping some crisp mountain air. The railroad winds through the countless bridges, zigzags thought the canyons, and runs through two rustic tunnels.

Halfway through a four-hour ride the train makes a stop at Northspur - a little railroad station in middle of the sequoia forest. The scenery and the station have frozen in time since the old days. It is a perfect spot to take pictures with the old engine and grab some great barbecue grilled on firewood right in front of you. Either we were really hungry, or the polish hot dog we bought was the best we have ever tasted. The ride on the train offers some fun entertainment as well.

The famous “train singer” puts on a show that makes both children and adults laugh, take photographs, and sing along.

то время как перспективы серьезного ухудшения российскоамериканских отношений кажутся более реальными чем когда-либо за последние несколько десятилетий, было приятным сюрпризом узнать, что новый пример активного сотрудничества между учеными двух стран находится прямо пососедству. Причем взаимодействие имеет место в совершенно новой области. Предмет изучения – мы все: выходцы из бывших советских республик. История наших достижений и потерь, побед и поражений, счастья и трагедий, в общем, история наших эмиграционных судеб – это, как выяснилось, ценнейший источник научных исследований. Феномен русской эмиграции в Америку не может не интересовать. По многим параметрам – это пример наиболее успешной интеграции в новое общество огромного количества людей, причем в большинстве случаев уже в первом поколении. Изучение этого явления давно интересует ведущего российского специалиста в области демографии и миграции населения Сергея Рязанцева. Он уже много лет следит за тем как выходцы из стран бывшего Советского Союза строят свою жизнь в самых разных уголках мира. В частности, у него были исследовательские проекты в Бразилии,

Аргентине, Австралии, странах Юго-Восточной Азии. Однако больше всего его интересовали, конечно, Соединенные Штаты. «Америка – это великая и уникальная страна эмигрантов,говорит Сергей, - опыт интеграции русских здесь очень интересен с точки зрения своей феноменальной успешности». Неудивительно, что когда два года назад появилась возможность поучаствовать в конкурсе на получение гранта фонда Фулбрайта, он постарался не упустить этот шанс. И вот теперь, после многочисленных рецензий на его работы американских и российских ученых, обсуждений в Москве и переговоров о научном центре, под эгидой которого будет проводиться исследование, член-корреспондент Российской академии наук Сергей Васильевич Рязанцев на шесть месяцев обосновался в столице Калифорнии в университете Дэвиса. Ему выплачивается научная стипендия, компенсируются расходы на книги и прочие необходимые для работы материалы, а также даётся возможность привезти с собой кого-то из семьи. Сергей Васильевич возглавляет международный проект исследующий экономическую интеграцию русскоговорящих иммигрантов в США.

По словам отца, в местной школе ему понравился многонациональный состав учеников в классе, дух свободы мышления и возможность заниматься теми предметами которые больше интересуют. Хотя по России он, конечно, как когда-то в Японии, тоже скучает. «Жилье я искал сам, через знакомых из университета, с которыми сотрудничаю уже много лет - говорит Сергей, беседуя со мной в уютном дворике довольно просторного дома в мексиканском стиле на одной из тихих улочек городка Дэвис - но аренда мне компенсируется. В общем, у меня есть все необходимое для работы. Хозяин дома – Луис – прекрасный человек, которому очень интересна Россия и русские. Мы подружились». Единственное о чем российский ученый сожалеет, наблюдая за предоставленными ему условиями – так это о том, что таких программ нет у него на родине. Как специалисту, ему очевидно, что наука и образование способны ликвидировать барьеры и непонимание между политиками и странами, позволяют людям лучше понимать друг друга. Главная задача нынешнего проекта профессора Рязанцева – это проверить рабочую гипотезу, которая сформировалась у него после

наблюдений и размышлений над процессами русской иммиграции в Америку за последние два с половиной десятилетия. Ее суть в том, что развитие экономики русскоговорящей общины в США и миграция из стран бывшего СССР являются взаимосвязанными явлениями. Кстати говоря, доктор экономических наук Рязанцев считает, что термин «русскоговорящие общины» выглядит более научно обоснованным, чем другие наименования выходцев из России и других постсоветских стран. Он приводит для этого три довода, которые показались мне интересными. Во-первых, выходцы из стран бывшего Союза за границей недостаточно консолидированы для термина «диаспора», хотя, конечно понятно о чем идет речь, когда он упоминается в разговоре. Во-вторых, русский язык является фактором, который экономически скрепляет мигрантов из России и бывшего СССР, имеющих разную этничность, религию, традиции и другие признаки самоидентификации. В-третьих, как известно, язык очень сильно влияет на экономическое поведение, т.е. где и как мы стремимся работать, и что и где покупать. Причем, это влияние иногда настолько заметно, что профессор даже предлагает использовать термин «русскоговорящая экономика».

В настоящее время в США проживает одна из самых крупных русскоговорящих общин за пределами бывшего СССР. По данным переписи населения США 2010 года в стране живут 3,2 млн. выходцев из России. Русский язык входит в первую десятку самых распространенных языков США.

В то же время в данных переписи населения США доступна информация об использовании языка в семье. Сравнивая эту статистику с нашим экономическим поведением, исследователь оперирует именно языком как главным признаком той группы населения, который его интересует. Итак, если гипотезу, положенную в основу проекта изложить простыми словами, то она будет звучать примерно так. С одной стороны, вновь прибывающие иммигранты из России и стран бывшего Союза интегрируются в американское общество чаще всего через предприятия созданные их предшественниками, т.е. такими же мигрантами, которые в буквальном смысле слова говорят с ними на одном языке. Именно здесь они приобретают первый опыт работы и жизни в новых условиях, и это своего рода социально-экономический «трамплин» для новых иммигрантов. С другой стороны, предприятия «русскоговорящей экономики» расширяются и процветают благодаря постоянной подпитке со стороны иммиграции из России и бывшего Союза. Это и новые работники, и покупатели товаров, и потребители услуг. А порой развитие «русскоговорящей экономики» в сочетании с другими факторами становится стимулом для новой иммиграции. Насколько можно судить по итогам первых двух месяцев работы, в основном эта гипотеза подтверждается. Хотя есть и интересные сюрпризы. Одно из неожиданных открытий, которое доктор наук Рязанцев меньше всего ожидал обнаружить в Америке, заключается в том, что чем более человек аполитичен, тем он более успешен на рынке труда. Пока это

явление подтверждается только на уровне интервью, но оно обращает на себя внимание. «Думаю, - говорит Сергей , продолжая беседу во дворе дома, из окон которого при желании можно увидеть три-четыре плаката местной избирательной кампании – что это связано с тем, что у работника больше времени заниматься своим делом, он полностью им поглощен, работодатель это замечает и его продвигает». Вместе с тем, российский ученый напоминает, что речь идет об адаптации на рынке труда, что это не следует путать с процессом полной интеграции в новое общество. Со временем, когда человек достигает определенного уровня материального благополучия, появление интереса к политике вполне возможно. Хотя, по мнению Рязанцева, русскоговорящим мигрантам более интересна и значима с точки зрения жизненных приоритетов включенность в экономику, чем в политику в Америке. Наиболее интересным наблюдением ученого наверное является то, что сравнивая тех у кого сложилась жизнь успешно, и тех, кто по разным причинам этого сказать о себе не в состоянии, можно определить причину того почему некоторые русскоговорящие плохо приспосабливаются. Так успешные прежде всего отличаются общим высоким уровнем образования. При этом они стараются учиться дальше, особенно придавая большое значение своему английскому. У них, как правило, был высокий социальный статус на родине и они стараются восстановить позиции. При этом очень интересно, что обладая хорошими предпосылками к адаптации в новой для них культурной среде, первоначальный рывок к успеху тем не менее они очень часто делают в рамках экономики русскоговорящей общины.

В отличие от успешных, неуспешные не стремятся получать образование, не учат английский язык, поэтому попадают в «ловушку» языковой среды и теряют стимулы для личного роста. Особенно показателен для иллюстрации контраста жизненного пути успешных и неуспешных распад их браков. Если в семье кто-то успешен, а кто-то нет, брак часто распадается, и новый брак, как правило, заключается с представителем близкой социальной среды, т.е. тот из бывших партнеров по семейному союзу, кто был более успешен находит себе пару из числа успешных и наоборот. Говоря о хорошем, пожалуй самое приятное открытие для российского ученого - это то, как много представителей русскоязычной общины с очень высоким уровнем профессиональной подготовки и мастерства работает в самых разных отраслях американской экономики. Для специалиста по трудовой миграции уже давно не новость десятки тысяч программистов в Силиконовой долине, но он с удовольствием фиксирует такую же картину и в образовании, и в медицине, и в средствах массовой информации, и в биологии, и вообще практически во всех возможных сферах экономической активности. Причем иногда в таких, о которых в самой России может даже еще и не слышали. Один за самых ярких примеров, приведенных Рязанцевым – это история успеха Майи из Лос-Анджелеса, которая не просто сделала потрясающую карьеру судебного переводчика, но сейчас принимает экзамен у всех своих коллег в стране, которые переводят с русского на английский, для получения ими сертификата. В конце нашей встречи, Сергей Рязанцев признался, что после завершения проекта ĜĜĜǤ ĚĘĘĎĆē ĒĊėĎĈĆē ĊĉĎĆǤĈĔĒ

он собирается написать книгу о русских за рубежом. Возможность поработать в Америке обогатила собранный за все предыдущие годы материал о русской эмиграции критическим образом. Особенно интересно в этой связи ему работать именно в Сакараменто, потому что до сих пор в поле зрения исследователей было больше Восточное побережье, а здесь он увидел много нового. На вопрос, что ему запомнилось больше всего, он почти сразу вспомнил экспозицию бизнеса и карьеры этой весной. Он обратил внимание на то, что организаторы мероприятия, пригласили всех потенциальных работодателей, а не только представителей экономики русскоговорящей общины. Российский исследователь оценивает это как то, что «организаторы вышли за рамки узкого понимания общины. Ведь они же сделали это событие для всех, для всего местного социума. Это говорит о том, что у них есть понимание социальной миссии. По-моему, - это лучший пример успешной интеграции русских иммигрантов в США!», восхитился профессор. При подготовке этого материала, я то и дело возвращался к мысли о том, что образ русского американца со временем конечно меняется и будет неизбежно меняться. Однако те масштабы и та скорость, с которой русские становятся американцами пожалуй определят черты этого образа в наибольшей степени. Понятно, что реализуя американскую мечту, русские в большинстве случаев просто осуществляют свои представления об успешной жизни. Но если возможность воплотить мечту в реальность сделала Америку Америкой, то может быть способность мечтать и шанс реализовать мечты делают из русских американцев?

Феномен русской эмиграции в Америку - это пример наиболее успешной интеграции в новое общество огромного количества людей, причем в большинстве случаев уже в первом поколении. ĚĘĘĎĆē ĎĒĊ ĆČĆğĎēĊ ǣǣ 43

Bob Smiley is one of the most in demand comics in the United States today. He performs to sold out crowds everywhere he goes. His comedy is smart, quick, yet is packed with message and purpose. Who would have thought winning a college comedy contest would foster such an amazing performer? Dare I say, comedic minister.

What does Smiley attribute to “starting-it-all?” Well, according to his website he was a broke college student and heard about a comedy competition. If he won, the prize money was a commanding and much needed $500, that would pay the rent for his “efficiency” closet (the very small living quarters he called home) for five months…he signed up. Though young Bob Smiley had never stepped on a stage, and the only prior laughs he had gotten were due to his “colossal leprechaun ears”, he went for the gold. He won the hearts of his fellow students and the added bonus of making his rent payment. Later, he cut his teeth as a Merchandise Manager for Christian music acts like Newsboys and Third Day. Before he knew it, he was opening for these acts at concerts and festivals all over country. The rest is history.

Recently I was at the filming of his new DVD (available at major retailers and at bobsmiley.com) ‘Mullets on Fire’. MoF was filmed over two nights at Bayside Church in Granite Bay to a standing-room-only crowd boasting an attendance that went well over 5,000 people. Once again, Bob delivered an amazing show that you can experience too in this side splitting DVD. The best thing about this and every performance is that not only are Smiley’s shows ridiculously hilarious, they are completed with not just a real and heart felt acknowledgement of God, but are jam packed with an absolute pronouncement of the Gospel. He is unabashed about what he does and why he does it. He fires off jokes like he’s firing a machine gun which captures your attention right away; he also captures your heart just like he did his fellow students at the competition that started it all.

In this interview, Bob talks about his family and the impact that his father had on him as he grew up. He talks about the importance of family what it means to him to be a father and a Christian entertainer. I’ve gotten to know Bob over the past few years and not only is he as funny in person as he is on stage, but he is also a class act. In this brief interview, you get to see a glimpse of the man behind the comedy and how he feels about the family behind the man.

1. Telll me abbout your family.

My dad is very funny. I’ve since learned that my brother is funny also but growing up he never got a chance to talk thanks to my dad and me. So we didn’t know back then.

Anyway, dinner times were always the best. We’d sit down and recap the day into a funny monologue.

It was a lot like a comedy club… especially because my dad always tried to charge admission. Kids from my town would try to get invited over to our house for dinner so they could hear the stories. So growing up, comedy was a very big part of my life. My dad was also the superintendent at my school so we were always pulling jokes on each other. My ears are pretty big so one

time he announced on the intercom “Bob Smiley, you left your ear muffs in the parking lot. Please get them because the busses cant back out.”

I got him back by telling everyone I was his son. So jokes were surrounding us all the time.

2. How diid thosse experienncess shaape you?

Everyone loved my dad at school.

He’d eat lunch with me in the cafeteria and our table was the most populated. So I learned early on that comedy was a great tool that drew people to you. At the time i didn’t know what God wanted me to do with my life but I knew comedy would be a big part of it.

3. Whenn did the idea of

I did a stand up competition at my college (yes...I did go to college!).

First prize was $500 which was 4 months rent for the room/closet I was living in at the time. So I did it and won... Not because I was good but because everyone else was terrible. (Ask me about the guy with the sombrero!) Anyway, two years later I graduated and then got a call from a college friend of mine who saw me do that stand up competition. He was now road managing Clay Crosse and they needed a funny emcee as well as someone to handle the merchandise on the tour. He asked if I had a job and after we both had a good laugh at that, I flew to Nashville to go on tour with

clay. Clay liked me and kept me on touring with him through the summer. Then the Newsboys asked me if I’d go on tour with them and Third Day. It paid so I said yes. (I had good parents that taught me that lesson) that turned out to be the number 1 tour that year and many youth leaders started asking me to come to their youth group and do a comedy show for them. My act had the word booger three times in it so I did really well. I then toured with Supertones, Mercy Me, Toby Mac, Audio Adrenaline, and a bunch of other bands who didn’t have the internet back then in order to find a better comic.

That’s how it all started.

People told me all through my life that I should be a comedian but I didn’t want a life traveling from bar to bar. When I discovered I could do clean comedy in a room full families I was hooked. I starting seeking out churches that wanted to laugh and hopefully be inspired.

I was in 2nd grade and the teacher asked me to help a kid up at the board who couldn’t figure out a math problem. The problem was “5 birthday candles + 3 birthday candles equals how many birthday candles?”

I jumped up and said, “5 birthday candles + 3 birthday candles is 8 birthday candles. Come on, its a piece of cake!” No one laughed except my teacher but afterwards she pulled me aside and thanked me for making her laugh. She was having a bad day and she said the laugh cheered her up. So, even though that wasn’t the funniest thing I ever said it was the first moment when I realized how much power there is with being able to give someone a laugh. So when I started doing comedy I remembered that moment and decided I was going to share the gospel as much as I could throughout my jokes. I hoped to cheer people up but steer them toward the source of real joy. Plus,

when you’re a comedian you talk about what you know. I’m Christian first before any other title, so from the very beginning Christian was going to come before the title comedian.

I don’t get many negative comments now (except for family reunions) because I’ve been doing Christian comedy long enough that people know where my heart is. But when I first started I’d run into people saying things like, “how can you crack jokes in a church building? That is sacrilegious!” The first few times I heard that I had to look up the word sacrilegious because I went to public school and didn’t know many big words. But later on I would ask them, “shouldn’t Christians, more than anyone else, be the happy ones?

Shouldn’t Christians have more of a right to laugh and enjoy themselves than anyone else in this world? We can’t tell people about the joy of knowing our Savior personally and then walk around with a stern frown all the time. We are set free to laugh and enjoy ourselves because we know this is not our home.” I don’t know if that answer ever made a difference because they usually walked away after they stopped talking, but I think it’s a solid point.

I remember 6 weeks after our first son was born he was sleeping in his room across the hall from my office. I was looking at my future show dates and there were only 3 of them for the next 5 months. I was really in a panic doubting my career in comedy. I felt I wasn’t going to be able to provide for my family. All the thoughts of the enemy were rattling around in my head. I got up and went to my newborn’s room. I cracked the door open and a small slice of light lit up his sleeping face. I stood there feeling peace come over me. It didn’t matter what I did for a living. It just mattered that I was a Christian, a husband and a father. I needed to be good at those 3 and everything else was extra. The next day I decided to look for a job to tide me over ‘till I could do those 3 dates on the books. Then I would quit comedy and get a teaching job.

(That’s what my degree was in.) I got a job interview a couple of days later to work in a warehouse making banners. I was just getting ready to leave the house for the interview that morning when the phone rang.

It was the rock band’s The Newsboys office. The guy asked how many dates I had for the spring. I told him I didn’t want to brag but that I had 3!

He laughed and said they had 64 and wanted to know if I wanted to tour with them again. I never doubted that God would take care of us after that. He was and is our guiding force and as long as I take care of my 3 jobs he would take care of the rest.

The other problem when I first started was that there weren’t that many Christian comedians out there.

So a lot of churches had never put on a comedy show. I had a hard time talking them into trying me out.

They had the comedy club mentality that comedians were dirty. I couldn’t blame them but I was determined to show them that there was still plenty of clean things to laugh at. It’s much easier now because there’s way more Christian comedians and almost every church has put on at least one

You can look at our ER receipts and tell that me and my 3 boys are very active people. I find that when you live life to the fullest you create a lot of adventures that you can then share on the stage. So about 80 percent of my stage act is about my family. The other 20 percent is about snuggies.

Also, I mentioned earlier that a comedian writes about what he knows.

When I’m not traveling my entire life is wrapped around my family so I end up writing a lot about them.

Great question that I was going to work in if you didn’t ask me. The new DVD is called “mullets on fire”. I filmed it out in california to a packed house of 1,800 people. It’s 70 minutes long and 62 minutes of it is really funny!

9. Whatt adviice woould d you givee up and com ming ennterttainnerrs? rs I’ve been doing stand up for 17 years.

My hotel shampoo collection is huge! I normally do between 90 to 100 shows a year. So 16 times 90 is.... Well, we

don’t need to bring math into this. I’ve done a lot of shows. I think that’s the trick. When I first started out I would do shows for junior kids at a church lock-in at 2am right after the shaving cream fights. I did a show once for 300 elderly people who called their group “60 and better!” But there wasn’t a person there who could remember being 60 years old. I once did a show in the middle of a car race in the center of the track. The audience was 100 yards away in the stands and I had to stop talking every time the cars came by.

(This is a true story). Some gigs are not perfect but they will always help you grow. 17 Years into this I can walk into any situation and do standup because I took every gig I could early on and learned from it. It’s not fun but it’s what you do if you are dedicated to being the best you can be.

С медициной и традиционным подходом к решению проблем я знакома не понаслышке. Шесть лет медуниверситета не прошли даром. Тем не менее, даже у меня было весьма смутное представление о том, чем же именно занимаются врачи-кайропракторы. Ответы на мои вопросы мне помогла найти врач – кайропрактор, Надежда Швец. После нашей короткой беседы мне стало ясно, что и звание и имя ей даны не зря. На приеме у такого врача, надежда на излечение появляется с первых минут и перерастает в убежденность уже после первых процедур.

Надежда, чем было продиктовано решение стать врачом — кайропрактором? Еще до отлета в США, мне довелось поработать около 2-х лет с опытнейшим врачом- кайропрактором. Я перенимала ее опыт, старалась понять все тонкости этой специальности. По приезду в Америку, изначально планировала получить образование в ортопедии, но в итоге кайропрактика мне показалась на порядок интереснее и многограннее. Я сделала правильный выбор, и пусть впереди меня ждали долгие месяцы напряженной учебы, те знания, которые я получила — спасают сейчас жизни моих пациентов. У большинства сложилось представление, что к врачу кайропрактору стоит в основном обращаться только после какихто травм или когда традиционная медицина становится бессильной. Правильно ли это?

Наша культура посещения врачакайропрактора разительно отличается от американской. Мы, к сожалению, бежим к врачу, когда боль становится невыносимой, доводя свою болезнь до запущенного состояния. Нет ни одного человека с идеальным позвоночником. У большинства травмы начинаются уже с рождения, ведь различные осложнения при родах оказывают существенное влияние на дальнейшее развитие ребенка. Родители мучают себя вопросом — почему ребенок отстает в развитии, почему постоянно болит животик, или почему он до сих пор не ходит. На все эти вопросы можно дать ответ, если посетить грамотного врача — кайропрактора. Расскажите об одном из последних случаев в Вашей практике с детьми? К слову сказать, ему было год и три месяца и он не ходил. Каково же было удивление матери, когда уже после второго визита кроха начал ползать, а через три месяца мама не верила своим глазам: он залезал на печку. Своевременный визит также позволяет спасти от проблем в будущем, ведь тот же сколиоз (искривление позвоночника — прим. ред.) может быть следствием родовой травмы, в результате которой было смещение дисков. Кстати, многие мамочки тоже обращаются за помощью после родов для стягивания тазобедренного сустава. Облегчение после данной процедуры наступает практически сразу. Поддаётся ли лечению без операционного вмешательства такое часто встречаемое явление, как грыжа позвоночника? Конечно таких пациентов много, особенно после различных аварий. Есть еще такой нюанс — в молодом

Приведу еще один недавний случай из практики: на прием пришел парень с диагностированной грыжей 5-ой степени. Мы подобрали индивидуальный комплекс упражнений, внесли коррективы в питание, добавили натуральные препараты и уже через 2 месяца на ядерно-магнитном резонансе было подтверждено, что грыжа уже была не 5-ой, а 3-ей степени. Были в практике и лежачие пациенты, и те, кому приговором звучало присуждение инвалидности. Я рада, что смогла помочь им вновь почувствовать вкус жизни и вернуть утраченное здоровье. Получается, подход к решению проблем пациента заключается не только во вправлении позвоночника и массаже?

Конечно нет. Подход к решению проблемы должен быть только комплексный. Мы лечим не симптомы, мы ищем первопричину заболевания и направляем все силы на ее устранение, применяя для этого и лазеротерапию, и инфракрасное излучение, и ультразвук, и индивидуальный комплекс физических упражнений, и правильный рацион питания. Если мы заговорили о питании, то какие продукты стоит добавить в черный список, чтобы помочь организму подольше оставаться здоровым и бодрым? Ощущаете нехватку знаний и навыков? Вы обязательно всему научитесь, все сможете и все преодолеете, но для этого необходимо прежде всего желание! Наблюдая за малышом, вы замечаете как он растет. Ни в один из периодов своего развития человеческий организм не растет с такой скоростью, как в первые месяцы жизни, всё как в сказке – «не по дням, а по часам...» Мы взрослые, знаем, что детство длится не долго. Примерно одну десятую жизни человека. Наблюдая и изучая характер ребёнка можно понять, какой характер будет у него, когда он вырастет. Ухаживая за детьми, родителям очень свойственно идеализировать своего ребенка. Хочется подмечать в нем что-то особенное, что отличает его от других. В этом нет ничего плохого. Но для объективности не мещало бы знать что именно ваш малыш должен уметь и знать в соответствии своему возрасту. Начиная с рождения, ребенок познает мир через ощущения, он полностью зависим от вас и сосредоточен на себе. Постепенно, в течении первого года жизни, малыш начинает воспринимать звуки, зрительные образы, слышит тон разговора. Первый год жизни – это необыкновенный период! Ежедневно вы замечаете перемены в малыше,

он начинает играть сам с собой, агукать, узнает людей и реагирует на них. Постепенно начинает хватать, учиться ползать, сидеть, стоять и как правило, к одному году начинает ходить. Следующий год значительно отличается от первого. Малыш пошел и ежедневно совершенствуется в этом! Но у него еще нет «тормозов», его трудно удерживать и останавливать, ребенок полон решительности и жаждет исследовать окружающий мир. Но ваш малыш по-прежнему сосредоточен на себе и требует к себе внимания. Еще слаба координация его движений, он может концентрироваться только на одной вещи, думает только о том, что видит, часто непослушен и стремится подражать взрослым. Говоря о третьем годе жизни, следует отметить активность малыша, его импульсивность и склонность проверять «границы дозволенного». Развиваясь, ребенок становится более независимым, многому учится, сравнивает себя с другими, он любопытен и легко внушаем. В этом возрасте уже формируется довольно богатый словарь, появляются предложения из 2-3 слов, малыш понимает гораздо больше, чем способен произнести. Молодым родителям очень важно понять и усвоить, что для формирования характера ребёнка очень важна домашняя атмосфера, конкретно микроклимат вашей семьи.

В жизни вашего ребенка, появляются уже не только воспитатели , но и учителя, меняется прежний свободный режим дня, появляются обязанности, предъявляются требования, ребенок становится взрослее. Наряду с этими переменами, меняется и отношение ребенка ко взрослым. Он уже может строго разделять, кто свой, а кто чужой, и скорректировать своё поведение по отношению к разным людям, а также создать различное представление о разных людях. В 7 лет весь внутренний мир ребенка меняется до неузнаваемости. У некоторых детей может наблюдаться замкнутость, неуправляемость, ребёнок может стать непослушным, отвергать ранее принимавшиеся им же требования, может начать конфликтовать с родителями и другими членами семьи, либо просто игнорируя их слова, либо открыто их отвергая. В это время оправдаются усилия тех родителей, которые смогут правильно организовать досуг своих детей, чтобы научить ребенка рационально проводить свободное время. Детей этого возраста необходимо приучить к обязательному выполнению школьных домашних заданий и своих

домашних обязанностей. Ребенка, также необходимо обучить ставить перед собой конкретные цели и достигать их. Хорошим помощником в этом деле могут стать занятия спортом, музыкой, каким-то серьезным увлечением. В этот период закладываются дружеские отношения между детьми и родителями. Возьмите себе за привычку в конце каждого дня обсуждать его с ребенком. Больше слушайте и задавайте вопросы. Вместе рассуждайте. Анализируйте. Мягко и ненавязчиво наставляйте. Дорожите доверием своего рбенка и не используйте его откровения в якобы воспитательных целях. Раннее детство - самый важный период. Воспитание ребенка в ранние годы переоценить невозможно. Уроки, которые он усваивает в первые семь лет жизни, оказывает на формирование его характера больше влияния, чем знания, воспринятые им в дальнейшие годы. Уважаемые родители! Любя и воспитывая своих детей, помните, что в любом возрасте все ваши поощрения и наказания обязательно должны быть мотивированы! eing a successful person in the 21st Century will take a new set of skills. As the leader of the Gateway Community Charter schools I find it important to have a vision for the future and for preparing our children for the new world they will be entering. What do I mean by ‘new world’? The world that is different from the one I was born into, the one that didn’t have an internet, software, cloudware, social media, gamification, virtual learning, and open source access to almost any information. Not only have all these new areas of contemporary technologies arrived on the scene (and more daily) but our students arriving in our school are different. They have grown up in a world of constant access to information and inputs. There is evidence that today’s children’s brains are physiologically different, more elastic, built on a world of multiple inputs and hyperconnectedess. And yet the institution of school has only changed in a limited fashion from the schools of my youth.

As we look back on the past years of best practice in our schools, there are many beliefs and practices that have had a positive impact on students and on their academic achievement as measured by grades and standardized testing. As we move into this new world and begin to integrate more technology, it is important to note that technology can never replace rich caring relationships between teachers and students. Our call now as we move into a new set of California State Standards (Common Core State Standards) and a new testing system and philosophy (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress - CAASP) is to take this time and this moment to look at what we are teaching, how we are teaching and how we will help our students be prepared to flourish as they move on from the K-12 system into college, work, and life.

So what does 21st century education mean? Our current school system was built on a factory model, with the

mindset that all students are grouped by age, and proceed at the same pace along the ‘conveyor belt’ where facts and information are poured into their open brains. Our 20th Century school was based on desks in rows facing forward, memorizing facts, multiple choice answers, and the teacher as a ‘sage on the stage’ in front of the class.

How will we transform our schools into more engaging learning environments, where students take more responsibility for their own learning, where technology is utilized to personalize, enhance and propel education?

As we look at how to transform schools, many people will feel discomfort.

Change is hard and we often hold on with great fervor to ‘the way we’ve always done things’ primarily because it is comfortable. For those of us that have been in education for a while, learning new technologies and new ways of teaching can be intimidating.
