from the publisher

I am always excited about our summer issues of Russian Time Magazine. Maybe because summer is my favorite time of the year. It has been so, ever since I fell in love with an adventurous soul who infected me with the travel bug.

here comes

S

he was fabulous and I was broke, we were as happy as could be. I told her I would follow her anywhere and she held me to my promise. Our first summer together we took more road trips than I had in my entire life. I’ll never forget our first 4th of July getaway. She put me in the car without telling me where we were going. “It’s a surprise,” she said, and I went along with her plan. She was next to me and that was all that mattered. We ended up on the beach in Monterrey, California. It was freezing cold and it seemed like there were a million people, sitting on the beach and waiting for the fireworks to start. I was about to ask myself what were we doing there when the fireworks began. They were launched from a ship docked near the shore. Each blast would go up in the air, explode into a million sparks, and rain down into the still ocean water creating a star-fall of

light. This fascinating illusion mixed with the electrifying excitement of the crowd imprinted deep into our memories. We decided to relive the experience and went back to Monterrey last year for the 4th of July. To our greatest surprise, there was no crowd this time, just a few people scattered here and there on the beach. Our plan failed, the city of Monterrey was no longer putting on the fireworks show. Our next option was to watch the fireworks in Santa Cruz which was an hour and a half away. We came there just to learn that the city of Santa Cruz forbids fireworks of any kind, well, at least officially. The city has been billed as the largest illegal fireworks display in the state. Thousands of people come together each year to set off fireworks on the beach and dozens of police officers are waiting there on ATVs ready to chase them away. It was quite a site to see!

We did not succeed in reliving our memories that day, but we managed to make some new ones. Those of you that share our spirit of adventure will appreciate our cover editorial “The Big Bang” that lists some of the best paces in California to watch the 4th of July fireworks. This story has great tips on making your 4th of July celebration a day to remember. If you prefer the company of friends and family over a lengthy road trip, our editorial “Seek the Sizzle” may give you handy advice on impressing your guests with a great barbecue without being a pro in the kitchen. This issue is also rich in helpful hints on looking and feeling your best for the summer, setting your kids on the road to success, and so much more! Whether it is learning about summer cooking, discovering new places to travel, or getting inspired by stories of fascinating people, I hope you enjoy this issue of Russian Time Magazine!

GRILL MASTERS: Seek the Sizzle by Timothy & Margret Okunev

Does the smell of The season of BBQ’s, grills, and barbeque smoke set sauce-stained aprons is in full your heart racing? swing. While there are a few Or is the sight of a juicy, glistening piece of steak fresh off the fire enough to get your mouth watering?

SELECTING THE RIGHT CUT OF MEAT:

of us who have mastered the art of grilling, most of us only grill a few times a year for July 4th or family gatherings. But you’re in luck, you don’t have to be a grill guru to have a blast grilling. All you need is the urge to fire up your grill! We will provide you with a few tips and lip-smacking recipes to get you started.

Putting on an envy-worth BBQ display takes more than hot coals and the fancy--no one can ever pronounce--but it’s so delicious I need to use it- -Worcestershire sauce. It begins with selecting the right cut of meat for grilling. As a matter of fact, selecting the right cut of meat is the cornerstone to having the perfect BBQ.

T-BONE:

RIBEYE:

TRI-TIP:

CHICKEN:

If you’re looking to impress, T-bone steak is the ultimate beef sampler. It includes a filet mignon and New York strip in one. It consists of a T-shaped bone with the larger side of meat containing the strip, and the smaller side containing the filet. You can’t go wrong with this cut.

This cut is pricey but so worth it! It is the perfect combination of tenderness and rich hearty flavor. In fact, it is so good that you don’t even need a marinade! Rib eyes have a thin ribbon of fat that runs through the steak. Since they have more fat marbling than almost any other cut, it’s the easiest steak to grill. They will remain tender and juicy even when well done.

Not only does it have a rich flavor, but tri tip also tends to be lower in fat than most other cuts. Of course, this means that it can dry out faster, but with a good marinade you’ll be fine. The most important thing about grilling tri tip is not to overcook it. Because it is a lean meat, it could appear underdone when actually it is ready to be served. You can find this cut in Costco or Sam’s Club for a reasonable price.

*Tip: Grill your rib eye by searing each side over high heat for 1-2 minutes to seal in the juices; then finish it over medium heat until it reaches your desired doneness

*Tip: ALWAYS let your steak sit for 5 to 10 minutes before you carve or serve it. This allows the juices to redistribute and evens out the heat

Few things wake up the flavor of chicken like roasting it on a grill. Thighs are better than breasts because they hold up to the heat and stay moist. Marinading chicken helps give it a nice moist texture. We recommend this simple recipe: mix 2 lb of chicken with one sliced onion, a cup of buttermilk (yes, buttermilk), and some salt and pepper; let it sit for a few hours. Buttermilk works as a tenderizer while onions add a kick of flavor. Shake off excess marinade, throw on some BBQ sauce, and get it on the grill.

*Tip: Whole Foods Market at Roseville has one of the best meat departments that offers best quality meat as well as free marinades & rubs. The Fountains 1001 Galleria Blvd, Roseville, CA 95678

BRING OUT the GRILLING GADGETS Gadgets are the gifts all men want but don’t know it yet. As hard as it was for my husband to admit he needed these gadgets, he was all but delighted when I came home with a brand new meat tenderizer and thermometer.

Flavors: Not every meat is created equal. Some cuts need little if any added flavors, other have to be paired with the right spices to get truly delicious. That’s where finding the right marinade is golden.

· 1/3 cup soy sauce · ½ cup olive oil · 1/3 cup lemon juice · ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce · ½ cup minced green onions · 1 tsp ground white pepper · Dash of cayenne pepper · 2 garlic cloves, minced Combine all ingredients. Pour marinade over meat. Cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours.

These convenient grilling toys are super simple to find and easy on the wallet. They can significantly ease the grilling process and help you get your cooking just right.

MEAT THERMOMETER:

MEAT TENDERIZER:

CHIMNEY STARTER:

Let’s face it, there is nothing worse than making lame excuses for over or under cooked meat. Unfortunately, we have all been there. Frequent grillers may be able to tell if a steak is ready by simply looking at it. For the rest of us, a basic meat thermometer can do the trick. It comes with a scale that tells you exactly which temperature your food should reach depending on your preference and the type of meat you are grilling. You can find a meat thermometer for less than $10 at most any grocery store. This gadget is simply priceless.

Meat Tenderizer reminds me of a stapler on steroids and works like a magic wand that instantly adds more flavor to your cut. Tenderizer creates small holes in meat which improves meat texture and allows marinade to penetrate the entire cut. It also reduces cooking time and makes meat more tender and juicy. You can find meat tenderizers at Bed Bath & Beyond for under $20.

Grilling over charcoal produces a nice smoky flavor that you can’t get with gas. It also allows you to get super high temperatures which are perfect for searing food and getting those iconic grilling marks. The problem with charcoal though, is that it takes some time and skill to get it started. That’s where a chimney starter comes in handy. This metal cylinder with a handle on one side can get your charcoal glowing in just minutes without any lighting fuels. It’s an easy way to get your grill hot in no time with no mess. You can find one for under $10 at Home Depot.

DISH OUT the

SIDES! Meat may always be the star attraction, but what barbecue is complete without complementary side dishes? Here are a few suggestions that pair exceptionally well with grilled meats. Sides are also practical because it’s a way to be sure there is something for everyone at your table. Here are our favorites:

22

POTATOES:

VEGGIES:

CORN:

Nothing goes better together with steak than potatoes. Potatoes are filling and delicious! Before you start grilling, cut up some red potatoes, toss with melted butter or olive oil and your favorite spices. I love garlic salt and oregano, but you really can use any seasoning. Then over with foil and bake for 35 minutes at 425°F. Uncover, sprinkle some shredded cheese and cook uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes.

If you like to eat fresh vegetables with your meat instead of carbs, grilled veggies are the perfect solution for you. Bell peppers, asparagus, and zucchinis are perfect for grilling. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper, and cook on medium-low heat. Grill on both sides until desired tenderness.

You can never go wrong with corn! Clean corn and generously coat with butter, salt and pepper. Wrap tightly in foil and grill for 40-45 minutes. Turn sides every 10 minutes or so. Throw the corn on the grill while it’s heating up and continue to grill together with your meat. This way it will be done at the same time as your meat.

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Grilling is a great way to produce healthy dishes that are high in flavor. If you choose the right cut, pair it with the perfect marinade and finish it off with some scrumptious sides, you can count on hearing “hats off to the chef!” So put on your apron, grab your spatula, and happy grilling!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST CAR WITHOUT OVERPAYING I was eight years old when I got behind the wheel of a car for the very first time. It was my grandpa’s pride and joy - the venerable Soviet Lada sedan. That’s when I first realized that having a "four-wheeled friend" is a good thing while having a very good "four-wheeled friend" is even better. As I was growing up I became the biggest fan of the Russian version of America’s favorite TV “Pimp my Ride.” I remember imagining myself behind the wheel of “at least” a Ferrari, while my friend Nick was putting money away for a Bentley, and my father in the tone of an absolute authority was insisting that the best cars were made by German automakers. The boys grew up, but our love for cars remained. However, now we are much more meticulous about choosing our fourwheeled companion. Very few can afford to speed about in exotics. So what do the rest of us do? Do not lose faith my friends! For those of you seeking a good ride without paying a fortune I wish to present my TOP 5 list of cars considered best in their category. This selection ranges from luxury autos to fuel economy options and provides the best price to quality ratio. Most of these pics have been on the road for a few years so you can find a gently used car in great condition without paying top dollar for a new release. I hope this helps you find your perfect fit on the road.

MERCEDES-BENZ S550

(SERIES W221, PRODUCTION YEARS 2007–2013) This is a great choice for a businessman or someone who wants to ride in style. For years the big "S-Class" Benz was universally considered the number one among the Luxury & Business class vehicles. This particular model was especially popular among dignitaries and heads of state, including Russian president Vladimir Putin, who upgraded his S-Class to an armored and bulletproof option. Why am I suggesting a car that

ranges in price between $90,000 and $120,000 when it was released? Because these days you can buy it for as low as $20–30,000 and enjoy the same comfort as someone who paid a fortune for it just a few years ago! A true bargain for anyone who wants to experience luxury and prestige. Pros: a reliable and powerful 5.5 L V8 engine, world class interior materials, comfort and safety.

SPORTS CAR -

BMW M5

(E60 SERIES, 2006-2010) This is a car for the speed fanatics who will settle for “either the best or nothing at all.” It is also great for those seeking an adrenaline rush. This model received global acclaim and became a “living legend” starting with the very first M5 that left the BMW factory back in 1980. This car has been the best in its class from 2005 to 2010, partially because E60 series was engineered before the 2008 global recession.

This model features top quality parts and material produced by the BMW’s M Division, one of the best performance car manufacturers in the world. It is equipped with a 5-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine and a 7- speed automated manual gear box and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds. M5 gets you the closest you can get to the sound and thrust of a Formula One engine and allows you to feel like a professional racer.

FAMILY CAR -

SUBARU OUTBACK (2010–2015)

When I think of a family car I cringe imagining a boring design and absence of style that became almost universal in this class. I have sorted through a large stable of “workhorses,” and found the one that can become a faithful reliable leader of your auto park the Subaru Outback. Be it daily city runs,

family outings on the weekends, or road trips – whether on the freeway or in the mountains– you can be certain that this iron horse will not let you down. Outback’s comfort, design, and versatility allowed it to righteously claim the title of the best car in its class since 2010 and forward.

Deciding on the choice of transportation for our better half is a tricky thing. Shape and color is the most common criteria women use when choosing a car. Reliability and low maintenance are the two things men consider when helping their woman find a ride. No wonder, since it is ultimately the gentlemen’s responsibility to take care of car maintenance and malfunctions. Finding the silver lining between aesthetics and practicality is quiet a challenging task. After spending some time doing the research, I found a

car that has the looks, reliability, and is low maintenance - the third-generation Mazda3. Not only the designers did a great job giving this model a lovely shape, they also achieved a technological breakthrough equipping the Mazda3 with a very efficient SkyActiv engine. As a result you get a beautifully designed automobile, with great fuel economy (30 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on a highway), reliable high-tech engine, and an extremely attractive design. A perfect find for a woman!

All of us have different criteria when it comes to choosing a car. Some value speed, others demand comfort, while the rest of us seek efficiency and reliability. There is no glove that fits all when it comes to personal preferences. Whatever it is you are looking for in your ride, you don’t have to compromise or scrape pennies saving for a car you like. The five models featured in this story range anywhere from $8,000 to $30,000 and can fit any kind of taste and objective.

ECONOMY CAR -

TOYOTA PRIUS (2010–2015)

Efficiency is the term that gets increasing attention these days, with the fuel prices constantly on the rise. That’s where technological solutions from the Japanese automakers come to the rescue. Historically, Toyota Motor Corp had to claim its place in the American market as a foreign automaker. Now, years later, it has a strong presence in the USA. Efficiency and reliability are the two factors that have everything to do with that. 26

California’s TOP

4th of July

FIREWORK Displays by Olya Ivannikov

Although the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, I somehow find it a bit ironic. It is the official celebration of the States independence from Europe and at the same time it is the day when the US feels the most like the old world.

BIG BANG the BIG the

We Americans are very sensitive about our personal space. We like to have our own place to call home, get our own ride to work, and reserve private rooms at restaurants for special occasions. According to the latest research, most American homeowners don’t even get to know their neighbors. We somehow manage to close our garage doors before we get to see who lives next door. Europeans on the contrary, have a very close sense of proximity. Living

in overpopulated old cities, people feel fine in big crowds. They share their living space with their friends and relatives, get around on jam-packed public transportation, and buy their groceries at crowded farmers markets. July 4th celebrations make us Americans, experience life the old world style. We suddenly don’t mind crowded parks and cramped beaches. We go outside to the street to see if

our fireworks can beat the ones set up by our neighbors. We make ourselves comfortable amidst thousands of strangers waiting for the fireworks to start. It’s a beautiful tradition that gives us a reason to step outside the box and share some excitement with the people around us. California offers a lot of great opportunities to do that with some of the most amazing 4th of July shows on the West Coast. We wish to suggest the top four firework displays in our state. URBAN AFFAIR

San Francisco If you are a city person and prefer the urban environment to the great outdoors, the San Francisco fireworks display will most likely win your vote. Being an iconic landmark of its own, San Francisco draws thousands of visitors from all over the world, especially for the 4th of July weekend. The best place to watch fireworks in San Francisco is by the waterfront along the Embarcadero Avenue. The fireworks are launched from the foot of Municipal Pier and barges north of Pier 39. Coit Tower, Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square also offer a spectacular view of the show.

If you want to make your experience truly unforgettable, you may consider watching fireworks from the water. This way you get to enjoy the show and a view of San Francisco skyline altogether. The prices for the water transportation differ dramatically. You can take a budget ride on a ferry boat which will cost you under $20, reserve a bay cruise for around $80, or go for a luxurious private yacht tour. Blue & Gold Fleet and Red & White Fleet are the two most popular companies for bay excursions. You should reserve your tickets in advance as the tours sell out quickly. photo by: Sergey Ivannikov

FOREVER YOUNG

Huntington Beach If you are more of a beach bum than city folk, Huntington is your 4th of July destination. Huntington beach is a true paradise for all those who enjoy lots of sunshine, water, and sand. Nicknamed “Surf City, the beach is famous for its speedy waives, perfect for surfing and body boarding all year long. It is known to be among the safest, cleanest and largest public beaches in California and is equally appealing to young people and families with kids. Huntington stretches for 8.5 miles and has one of the longest piers on the West Coast (1,850 feet). Huntington is one of the places where you truly feel the thrill on the 4th of July when the lengthy shoreline looks a lot like a beehive. The beach attracts myriads of people that come there to watch the fireworks. The city offers a spectacular show, which is almost half an hour long and engages 1,300 rounds of fireworks with 500 of them released during the last 60 seconds of the grand finale! The show starts at 9:30 at night, but the beach offers a lot of attractions that can keep you entertained all day long. Aside from laying in the sun and catching the waives, you can enjoy free volleyball nets, rent a bike and cruise the ocean front trail, or do some shopping at a variety of unique boutiques right across the street from the pier. 30

THE FUNKY TOWN

Santa Cruz

If you are wild at heart and love fun and spontaneity, you may find the Santa Cruz Boardwalk a pretty interesting place to be on the 4th of July. The city of Santa Cruz has earned a reputation of a hippie town where time stands still. The Boardwalk, city’s iconic landmark, is a perfect example of that. It is a vintage amusement park right on the beach. This place seems to remain unchanged ever since it was built back in 1907. Their famous Giant Dipper, is a wooden roller coaster that opened in 1924, still thrills riders. The admission to the park is free so you only have to pay for the attractions you like. Here you can also enjoy a variety of arcade games and typical fair foods such as deep fried Twinkies and giant corn dogs.

Santa Cruz 4th of July celebration deserves special attention. The city does not put on a firework show and officially prohibits any type of fireworks. So, what happens when you ban fun in a hippie college town filled with free-spirited students? You end up with a massive illegal fireworks display put on by the city residents themselves despite the strenuous objections of local police. It goes kind of like this: you have a beach filled with a few thousand people loaded with all kinds of fireworks. You also have a squad of policemen on ATVs ready to seize anyone who fires up the firecrackers. At one point, fireworks start shooting from everywhere and the police get busy trying to chase down the reckless rebels. Watching the chase might be just as much fun as watching the fireworks.

WORLDS AWAY

Lake Tahoe If you have the travel bug but can’t go away on a lengthy trip, Lake Tahoe offers a weekend getaway that may feel like an overseas escape. Tahoe’s breathtaking mountain top skyline and the world-famous epic blue lake dramatically differ from a typical Californian landscape. Lake Tahoe is a MUST SEE destination that attracts tourists from all over the world – and for a good reason. From hiking and swimming to parasailing and jet skiing, Tahoe is heaven for any kind of outdoor activities. Tahoe’s Lights on the Lake show is rated as one of the top ten displays in the nation. The fireworks take place all around the lake with the biggest one held in South Lake Tahoe. The show is spectacular and brings in thousands of people so you may want to reserve a spot on a beach in the morning to assure a good view. You can also watch the fireworks from the water by booking a steamboat dinner cruise. Ask a local for advice on a place to eat. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover a unique food joint that offers a gourmet menu made from fresh local ingredients. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Daddy’s

show time by Lika Emelyanova

How come it never surprises us to see a park full of women with children, but the minute a man walks onto a playground with his kids - he becomes the center of attention?

Parenting has long become a shared responsibility, but there is still something special about seeing a man spending time with his offspring. Psychologists proved that interaction between a father and a child is more than the “Aww, that’s so cute” factor.

Research shows that the role of a father in a child’s life stretches far beyond a provider or a caregiver.

Leatherby’s serves dozens of old-fashioned ice cream creations of all shapes and sizes. Their famous ice cream Sundae garnished with house-made chocolate fudge and strawberry sauce is a mile-high and is enough to share for the entire family. The restaurant also offers a great food menu in case you need some real food before a killer dessert. some quality time. Having fun together is the easiest way to bond with children. Sharing a positive experience creates good vibes and builds memories that last a life time. So, the easiest way for a father to connect with his kids is to unleash his inner child and have some fun. Here is a few simple ways to do that.

Sky High Trampolines

Looking for a fun away to spend the day in the city? How about some roller coasters, rides, water attractions, go karts, arcade games, and a pretty awesome miniature golf course all in one? Scandia Family Fun Center got famous for its entertaining Dutch style mini golf course, but a few people know about a compact amusement park located right on the premises. The park features some of the most popular attractions including a water ride, a giant slide, a go kart track, and a brand new roller coaster. Its most visible attraction, the Sky Screamer, is worth a separate note. The ride mounts on top of I-80 and tips over the freeway making riders hold on for dear life. It’s a great and inexpensive place that guarantees to keep both parents and children busy for a few hours.

Are you tired of stopping your children from bouncing off the walls? Try joining them instead! Sky High Sports Trampoline Park offers a great opportunity to spare some extra energy on huge indoor trampoline courts. The courts feature specially designed trampolines that provide more bounce, softer landing, and a great opportunity for all kinds of tricks. Even the walls are covered with trampolines all around to assure safety and eliminate any opportunity to fall off the court. Here you can literally bounce off the walls, do tricks and flips, or develop your team playing skills while shooting some dodgeball. Sky High was co-founded by two brothers that were looking to build a fun and safe place to play with their kids.

Anthony Hughes,

Attorney at Law and a proud father of 8 month old baby Cali Hughes went to Law School following his father’s dying wish not knowing that he will someday head a prominent law firm helping thousands of people get out of debt. Hughes became one of the most acclaimed bankruptcy attorneys in California and helps clients all over the state.

A successful legal career wasn’t the only passion ignited by Anthony’s parents. When he was 12 years old they gave him a few pieces of workout equipment for Christmas. The boy began to explore the gift and soon got carried away with weight lifting and body building. He is still fully engaged in exercising and believes it helps him be more productive in his legal career. A little over a year ago Anthony discovered a new passion – being a dad. “I thought I knew

what it means to be a father until I saw Cali for the first time,” recalls Hughes, “But it only dawned on me when I heard her heartbeat at the ultrasound session. I realized that I am now entrusted with a new human being whose life I am able to touch, form, and shape. It is an unparalleled feeling!” Cali is still just a baby but Anthony cherishes every single moment with her and makes time in his busy schedule to be next to her as she explores the world.

ILLUMINATING FACE MASK

TROPICAL FACIAL

This easy tropical mask contains a power house of natural ingredients used in the most expensive skin care products. Special acids and enzymes found in papaya help brighten dull skin, and remove dark spots, freckles, and blemishes. Honey is a strong antimicrobial which reduces inflammation and helps fight acne and pimples. Lemon juice is full of antioxidants and vitamin C which rejuvenates the skin, reduces excess oil, and improves overall skin-tone.

This easy exfoliating technique does wonders for you face! It consists of two simple ingredients, pineapple and baking soda, takes less than 15 minutes, and leaves your face visibly smoother, cleaner, and more even-toned. The secret is an enzyme called bromelain found in fresh pineapple. Bromelain instantly breaks down proteins and helps remove dead cells and dirt from your skin without the use of any harsh scrubs or expensive treatments. Since pineapple removes a thin outer layer of your skin it also helps reduce dark spots and fine lines. Despite the fact that pineapple is quite acidic, it is alkaline so it does not irritate the skin.

YOU WILL NEED:

· ¼ ripe papaya · ¼ fresh avocado · 1 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice · 1 tbsp. of raw honey

· About 3 1-inch cubes of fresh pineapple · 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda

HOW TO: Combine all four ingredients in a food processor or blender. Blend mixture until it form a fine paste. Apply to a clean skin avoiding eye area. Wait for 15 minutes. Rinse away with warm water. Follow with a balancing toner or a moisturizer. You can do the pineapple facial while taking a shower in the morning. It will cost you under $4, take less than 15 minutes and leave your skin renewed and smooth. Follow it with the illuminating face mask, and you’ll get your face glowing and ready for that sheer tinted moisturize and summer sunshine! RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

HOW TO: Rub a cube of fresh pineapple all over clean skin avoiding the eye area. Wait 5-10 minutes. Do not leave the mask for too much longer to avoid irritation. Rinse pineapple away with warm water. Doing this in the shower will add some extra steam which will help soften your skin even more. Next, mix baking soda with a few drops of water to create loose paste. Gently massage it into your skin with circular motions. Make sure to never rub or apply any pressure to avoid damaging new skin. This process should never hurt. Rinse away well. Follow with a moisturizer. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

Connections and money, the two things that define success of an artist mostly anywhere in Russia. A new grad with a degree in arts, Alisa had neither one. However, the young artist was too ambitious to give up on her dream, so she dared to chase it. She left the life she knew behind and moved half way across the globe to the US in pursuit of new

opportunities. “The change was drastic and I was completely unprepared for it, recalls Alisa. Everything seemed unfamiliar and strange, from spread out landscape of Los Angeles suburbs to a new language and culture. Now, four years later, Alisa embraces her new homeland and the opportunities she discovered here as a young artist.

M

oscow, Russia’s “Big Apple,” is a fascinating city ranked among the most expensive places on the planet. Moscow is rich in history, culture, and architecture. It is also plain rich; the city hosts Russia’s top dollars and has one of the largest millionaire per capita ratios in the world. It’s a concrete jungle that spits out anyone who can’t keep up with the cost of living that far exceeds any other city in the nation multiple times. Being a Moscow resident is a privilege not taken lightly. Our featured guest is a Moscow native who left Russia’s historical landmark and moved to the suburbs of Orange County, near Los Angeles, California. It was a leap of faith that could either bring her closer to her dream or leave her broken on the ground. Young, scared, and completely unprepared for such a change, she still considered the stakes worth the risk and took a step into the unknown. Now, four years later, Alisa Shtykar is living the dream, perfecting a fascinating gift she was born with. She is a young artist whose work and style have already created a buzz in the art community. Her paintings are exhibited throughout California and captivate both spectators and artists alike.

“Americans love to see the stereotypes being broken, and that is what I am good at,”

42

“An opportunity to develop and prosper as an artist is a privilege distinctive to the US. As much as I love and miss my homeland, I sadly admit that talent, skillset, and artistic passion are not enough to become a successful artist in Russia these days. You have to know the right people or have lots of money to put yourself on the grid. I know lots of brilliant

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

artists who had to put their talent on a back burner and take on regular jobs to make a living. This is a great waste!” admits Alisa. American audience happen to be especially receptive of Alisa’s style. The artist exhibits her paintings in the Ego Gallery in Redondo Beach, California, and gets great feedback for all of her pieces. Her industrial landscapes are especially popular. “Americans appreciate and encourage any form of art, and I truly admire this about the US. This country gives artists an opportunity to grow and develop their talent. It elevates art to a career, rather than a hobby. This allows artists to fully invest in developing their skill and thus make a living from their work.” Alisa’s artistic style and subject matter catch people by surprise. Her gallery features six-foot tall rough industrial style paintings displayed next to dreamy portraits and pasteltoned still life compositions. What is especially fascinating about Alisa’s work is that her impressionism-infused paintings portrays just as proficiently as her industrial pieces. This might be one reason why visitors of Alisa’s gallery have trouble believing that all the pieces displayed in her exhibition are created by the same artist. It is rare when an artist can use a variety of techniques and master all to perfection. Another challenge the artist has to face has everything to do with her youth and the way she looks. “I have the hardest time convincing the guests of my gallery that I am indeed the artist,” smiles Alisa. Looking at Alisa you can understand why her art fans have trouble

believing she is the mastermind behind her large daring pieces of art. It is hard to imagine this fragile young woman the size of Thumbelina is capable of creating six-foot tall industrial landscapes. The discord between Alisa’s fragile looks and the size and themes of her paintings surprisingly aligns with her artistic vision. “Americans love to see the stereotypes being broken, and that is what I am good at,” says the artist. “My art is meant to make people think. It encourages them to depart from their usual perception so they can see the world from a different perspective. I believe each piece of art should trigger a thought or an emotion; it should also remind us of what’s truly important, make us think about our goals, and redefine our values,” says Alisa. While Alisa’s work inspires people, she finds inspiration all around her. “Inspiration is curious and unpredictable,” says the artist. “It appears from nowhere and can be triggered by the most surprising things, such as a good song, a mess in the closet, or a weather change.” Inspiration is hard to incite, but it starts from observing the world around us. “Art is a form of meditation which one can only achieve by being perfectly still.” Alisa’s favorite form of meditation comes with the sunrise. “I love those days when I can sleep in with no need to rush anywhere. Then I can simply dwell somewhere between the sleep and the reality and recall my dreams.” Alisa starts each new painting by observing the object she is about to draw. She lets her theme dictate the technique and style of her future painting.

This country gives artists an opportunity to grow and develop their talent.

“Art is a form of meditation which one can only achieve by being perfectly still.”

“Each object I paint calls for a different style. Just like you don’t use the same tool to eat soup and plant flowers, artists don’t use the same technique to pain different themes,” says Alisa. “If I paint an apple – I play with the colors and light to make it look tempting and ripe. If I paint a construction worker hanging on the edge of a rafter of a skyscraper, I use sharp strokes and a dim color pallet to express the emotions behind this piece.” Art is a tricky trade. The majority of the most famous artists in the

history of mankind lived a life of destitution and died broke long before their work was recognized. Alisa belongs to a new generation of artists who are not frightened by the gloomy fate of their forebearers. “We live in a digital day and age. Technology makes it easy to connect an artist with its audience. Internet and social networks allow artists to instantly streamline their work to people who can then further share it with their friends. These days it is much easier to gain recognition if people like your work,” says Alisa.

The young artist has big plans for the future. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Art and travels throughout California displaying her art exhibition. She plans to open her own gallery and participate in art shows all over the world, including Japan, Europe, and Russia. “South America, Africa and Australia are also on my top visit list,” says Alisa. You can find Alisa’s art portfolio on the internet or visit her exhibition in the Ego Gallery, Redondo Beach, California.

the SMARTEST Kid in School

Help your child Master Math

by Jeff Pudewell

Ever wonder why, during summer vacation, some kids forget everything they learned last year, while others return to school knowing even more than they did before?

The secret is simple – if you balance your summer activities wisely, you can use this precious break to get ahead without giving up your play time. This is also true about math, and math has special importance.

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

All of us, kids included, think that if you can do math, you’re smart! And there are a few things that come close to feeling like the smartest kid in school when you show up for the first day of class.

47

Being good at math is not just a matter of being the smartest. It is also one of the most important factors that determine whether a child will succeed further on in life. Sounds larger than life? Not so much!

M

ath is one of the toughest subjects to crunch for most of the kids (and parents trying to help them with homework). At the same time math skills affect the GPA which then determines whether a child can attend a good college, receive a reputable degree, and get on a successful career path. So how can you help your kids get set for success? Use their summer time wisely! Most people think that summer is the time for pool parties, BBQ’s, and picnics in the park. And it’s true! This is the best season to enjoy the great outdoors. But here’s a secret: you can balance your kids’ summer activities between playing and getting ahead with math. The easiest way to do that is to budget a reasonable amount of time every week for math lessons, much like you would plan taking piano or swim sessions. Planning summer learning is great and effective, but it might get tricky. That family vacation you planned for the middle of July or your kids’ summer camp programs may get in the way. The key is to find something

flexible that works for you. Several local Mathnasium Learning Centers took on this challenge and came up with the Summer Readiness program which balances maximum flexibility with optimal results. It includes 24 2-hour sessions which you can use anytime you want, starting with the beginning of summer to the end of August. For example, your child can attend Mathnasium five days in one week, three days another week, and maybe not at all the next week if your family is out of town. Every enrollment begins with a detailed assessment of your child’s ability and the creation of a personal curriculum which your child will study during the summer. In other words, they start by testing your kid to see what he or she knows in math. Then they create a custom learning program that helps your child catch up on the stuff they missed and learn new material to get ahead. It’s quite possible for a child to advance an entire grade level over the summer and excel in their math classes next school year. I hope this great learning trampoline can help your child become the smartest kid in class. Good luck!

"A robber demands either your wallet or your life. A bad doctor takes both." William Shakespeare Did you know that the top eight places on the list of the best paying jobs in the US are claimed by medical professionals? However, America is still missing almost 90,000 doctors. And here is why: • Tuition to earn an MD, ranges anywhere from 100,000-460,000 depending on the University and field of studies. • It takes 9-14 years of dedicated studies to receive a degree • Medical programs are extremely competitive and require a high GPA, SAT exam, and jumping through a whole lot of hoops

A real-life story of faith driven perseverance, and dedication

A STEEP CLIMB INTO A NARROW FIELD by Olga Garicichina

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

• Last but not least, most conversations that doctors have with their friends and family, end up with requests for free medical advice Now try to imagine, how much bravery and dedication you need as an immigrant from a low income family, not only to become a doctor, but to open your own clinic at 27 years of age. The subject of my interview is Dr. Gregory Tovmassian. His life story is proof that professionalism, believing in ones dreams, dedication to succeed, and never wanting to give up, can help you achieve your goals. Especially when such goals are based on God’s calling. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

51

Gregory, a path to a medical degree usually starts with either a childhood dream or a family history. What was your motivation to become a doctor?

So how does a young man engaged in a family auto service business end up being a doctor? What was your turning point?

Statistically speaking, becoming a doctor is a very expensive career choice. Average student loans go anywhere between 100,000-460,000 and the time spent studying is more than a 60 hour work week. Didn’t such statistics scare you from becoming a doctor?

52

Neither one. I never imagined myself in scrubs. Moreover, the thought of medical offices and hospitals used to bring on a deep sense of sadness. There are no doctors in my family so I am actually the first one. We moved to the United States when I was 11. My father and brothers worked day and night as car mechanics to provide for our family. Growing up I helped them as much as I could, but deep down inside I knew it was not for me. It was a conversation I had with my brother (Renald). He once asked me whether I would consider becoming a doctor. I admitted that perhaps it is not my calling since it hurts me to see people in pain or agony. That’s when he said a phrase that changed my life: “You shouldn’t focus on the pain people are in, but rather think of how you could take that pain away. This way you’d be able to turn suffering into happiness.” I knew that it was not going to be easy from the very beginning. I was also determined to not become a huge burden for my family so I worked part time to help support myself through some of my schooling. It was hard, but I was dedicated and my family was always there to support and encourage me. Without my faith in God and my families support, I would not have been able to achieve my goals. Also, we live in an amazing country which offers a lot of financial resources to help those who have a dream of earning a degree.

You practice a new and very specialized medical field – Podiatry* How did you chose your specialty?

I had trouble deciding what specialty to choose until my friend (Yelena Barnyak) introduced me to an amazing doctor that influenced my decision. His name was Dr. Alexander Reyzelman and he has been practicing Podiatry since 1998. At the time, Dr. Reyzelman was seeing patients once a week at Manzanita Medical Clinic, one of the most pronounced medical offices in the Slavic Community. I was working there as a medical assistant at the time so I shadowed Dr. Reyzelman every time he’d come. He showed me what a good doctor should be like. I was surprised at how diverse his specialty was. But most important, how drastically it changed the lives of the patients after receiving treatment from him.

You have successfully completed your residency at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, California and had an opportunity to stay and practice at Kaiser. You ended up coming back to Sacramento. Why?

It was a tough decision to make. I had great chemistry with my colleagues and Kaiser is a great place to work. However, deep down inside I knew that my community back home had a need for a doctor of my specialty. At that time Dr. Reyzelman could no longer see patients in Sacramento and no other Russian speaking Podiatrist was serving this area. I listened to my inner voice and came back.

Gregory Tovmassian, DPM is the owner of Sacramento Foot and Ankle Center. The clinic provides diagnosis and treatment of various foot and ankle conditions. The office is located at 6600 Mercy Court, #150, Fair Oaks, CA 95608. Telephone: 916-459-4398 photos by: Olha Melokhina | www.olhaphotography.com

You opened your own clinic upon your return. Now you had to become a businessman on top of being a doctor. More than that, instead of joining an existing practice which already had a financial base and clientele, you opened a brand new clinic starting from zero. What made you take such a risk?

I’ll be honest, at that point I did not have a precise business plan. But I knew that God will not let me fail, as my sole intent was to help those in need of my skills/knowledge among the general population and the surrounding medical offices. Thanks to the huge support of my mentor, Dr. Reyzelman, and the Russian clinics of our region, we opened the doors of the Sacramento Foot & Ankle Center in July of 2012.

Considering the need for a clinic of your specialty, I assume your office has been swept with patients from day one?

On the contrary, in the beginning we had no patients at all! We had periods when we would see one person in a span of three weeks. You see, when it comes to health, people do research before choosing a doctor. They want to know whether the doctor is good and what other patients are saying about them. It took us some time to build a good reputation. However, in about half a year, our waiting room was full!

I am pleasantly surprised that you are married. It is next to impossible to make time for personal life while studying for a medical degree and establishing your own practice. Your wife must be a very supporting and understanding person. Gregory, as a Podiatrist, could you please answer one question that bothers women all the time. Is it safe to walk in high heels?

Three tips from a doctor for a long and healthy life.

Absolutely! My wife (Tanya) is my continuous motivation and support. During the toughest periods of my life, she believed in me and convinced me that I will make it. Her love was the best inspiration and protection, all in one. She is the most fascinating woman, wife, friend, and confidant I could have ever wished for! We do believe that narrow high heel shoes contribute to certain foot problems. But there is no research proving that walking in high heels can cause problems in the future. Of course that depends on how high the heel is, how long a woman walks in them for, whether the toes get pushed together and so on. But overall, fans of high heels can sleep soundly. Diet, diet and again diet! I am not talking about starving yourself or staying away from unhealthy foods; I am talking about making healthy eating your lifestyle. A healthy diet prevents most disease. Each extra pound increases pressure on your feet by 5-6 times when you are walking and up to 10 times when you are running. Remember, we don’t live to eat, we eat to live.

*Podiatry or podiatric medicine is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower extremity. Within the field of podiatry, US trained podiatric physicians rotate through major areas of medicine gaining exposure and practice to areas including but not limited to: surgery, sports medicine, biomechanics, geriatrics, internal medicine, [3] diabetes, vascular, neurological, pediatrics, dermatological, orthopedics, or primary care. Challenging the Status Quo

As the world has been and is changing, our education system has remained somewhat, if not exactly, the same across the last century or more. We wish to bring your attention to a charter schools system that decided to question how things have ‘always been done.’

TO BETTER SERVE OUR CHILDREN

Our guest is Dr. Cindy Petersen, the Superintendent and CEO of Gateway Community Charters, a Sacramento area nonprofit dedicated to partnering with the community to create quality public school choice. “What do our children need to learn today to be ready to capitalize on their future – and how do they need to learn it?” Gateway WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

Community Charter (GCC) schools are trying each day to answer this question in order to best serve the needs of the students today and prepare them for their best possible future,” says Petersen referring to the innovative charter school construct. GCC are driven to provide the best possible opportunities so that all children may learn. The schools place a particular

emphasis on serving the needs of those that have historically been unserved or underserved such as English learners, vulnerable, at risk, unserved or underserved populations. The charters incorporate eight different schools. We wish to spotlight four that have incorporated significant technology such as Smart Boards, computers, chrome books, and laptops in their classrooms.

Dr. CINDY PETERSEN is Superintendent and CEO of Gateway Community Charters. Dr. Petersen was the 2012 recipient of the Education Inclusion Recognition awarded by the Russian Speaking Community in partnership with the California Legislature as well as receiving the 2013 Association of California School Administrators Superintendent of the Year for Region 3.
