RunRocknRoll.com Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end. A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands. Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end? Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point. Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

SAN JOSE Gateway to the Bay

San Jose leads the charge in more than just technology. The city holds many “biggest,” “best” and “first” titles that put San Jose on the map for more than just housing many of the world’s top digital and tech companies. Enjoy some interesting San Jose distinctions: 20

Rock ‘n’ Roll SAN JOSE ½ Marathon

• California’s first state capitol building was originally in San Jose, just steps from where Sunday’s finish line concert will take place. • San Jose is the No. 1 recycler among the nation’s largest cities. • Discovery Meadow in downtown San Jose is home to the world’s largest Monopoly board game. Spanning 930 square feet, it monopolizes quite a bit of its own real estate.

For Those Who Crave the Outdoors and Recreation If outdoor adventure is your niche, you have come to the right place. San Jose’s temperate climate coupled with an abundance of parks, pools, natural hiking trails and sporting activities, make San Jose a hot spot for any outdoor recreation enthusiast. Check out some of our favorite recreation activities in San Jose:

Run, Hike or Bike San Jose is surrounded by foothills and mountains with trails galore! Lace up your shoes and don’t forget your camera; these trails have views you will want to remember. • Guadalupe River Trail: flat, paved and conveniently runs through downtown; best for running or riding • Rancho San Antonio: hilly trails but the views are worth the burn; best for running or hiking • Los Gatos Creek Trail: scenic, shady and peaceful trail system with a mixture of paved and dirt trails; best for running or hiking Entertainment Looking for some pre- or postrace entertainment? Whether you like history, thrills, art, sports, theater, or shopping, you can get your kicks in San Jose. Below are a few of our favorite San Jose stops.

• Winchester Mystery House: Take a tour of the third most haunted house in the U.S.— The Winchester Mystery House. For the thrill seekers, check out the Fright Nights, where on select nights in September and October the already haunted house turns into a terrifying Halloween experience. • Santana Row: Shopaholics won’t want to skip Santana Row. Shop till you drop, then stop by one of the swanky new restaurants for a bite to eat or enjoy a thirst quenching happy-hour drink. For the Winos & Foodies at Heart Fuel up for Sunday’s race at one of our favorite San Jose restaurants. Whether you enjoy savory fine dining, spicy challenges or local favorites, San Jose will satisfy your cravings. • J. Lohr Winery Tasting Room: There’s no whining in San Jose, only wine-ing. Come to

the J. Lohr San Jose Wine Center 1.5 miles from downtown to taste some of the finest wines harvested close by in the Central Coast. • Smoke Eaters: If heat is what you crave, check out Smoke Eaters. Featured on the Travel Channel’s hit TV show, “Man vs. Food,” for its Hellfire Challenge, this hotspot is famous for some of the world’s hottest chicken wings. Do you have what it takes to take on the “five minute afterburn?” • Original Joe’s: Original Joe’s is a San Jose staple that has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a San Franciscan flair since 1956. With its generous portions and a menu that ranges from omelets and American comfort food to seafood and Italian, Original Joe’s will satisfy even the hungriest visitor.

Headliner ECHOSMITH

Headliner Concert featuring gether,” “Cool Kids” and the debut’s title track, the video for which was directed by famed actress Clea Duvall (Argo, American Horror Story).

Echosmith has gone from little-known Los Angeles altpop gem to Warped Tour’s undeniable breakout band. Basking in the glow of a summer spent playing to thousands of fans all over the country, the quartet— which consists of Sierota siblings Jamie (vocals/guitar), Sydney (vocals/keyboard), Noah (vocals/bass), and Graham (drums)—is event more excited to share their music with all the people who weren’t able to see them on the annual punkrock summer camp.

One song that seems to get the loudest crowd response is “Cool Kids,” a dreamy Smiths-esque strut that encourages people embrace our differences because that’s actually what makes each every one of us cool. With a blend of style and substance, it’s no wonder Echosmith is connecting with both critics and fans. Alternative Press named them as one of the “100 Bands You Need To Know in 2013.”

In June, Echosmith released a 3-song Summer Sampler, featuring tracks from the LP, including fan favorites like “Come To24

Respect the Distance

RX to Rock

ADVICE FROM THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MEDICAL DIRECTOR, P.Z. PEARCE, M.D.

For many of you, this will be your first half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

TRAIN

HYDRATE

SALT

PLEASE

It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes.

Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your preplanned schedule.

Fill out the medical information section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars.

If you have questions, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On… 30

Race Day Checklist

The final two days before a race are very important. Follow this checklist to ensure that you get the most out of the hard training you’ve done.

—By Matt Fitzgerald

48:00 | Do a short, fast workout

47:00 | Start carbo-loading

Be sure to consume high-carb foods and beverages at every meal.

31:00 | Get a good night’s sleep

Getting adequate sleep is critical the final days before a big race.

22:00 | Do a short, easy workout It relieves mental and physical tension and keeps the body primed for performance.

21:00-10:00 | Keep carbo-loading

Maintain your high-carb diet throughout the last day before you race. Choose familiar foods that have always worked well for your body in the past. Now is not the time to experiment.

20:00 | Get your gear together

Take some time to get all of your gear together; create a race gear checklist that you use for every race. 32

Rock ‘n’ Roll SAN JOSE ½ Marathon

18:00 | Plan for race morning

Make a concrete plan for race morning that includes a wake-up time and a route to the race venue

3:00 | Wake up early

Set an early alarm to give your body plenty of time to get up to speed. Try to climb out of bed at least three hours before the start horn blasts.

This trail is an awesome display of nature in close proximity to urban culture. “Regularly run that between Willow Glen and Los Gatos and even up into the hills if I need some hill work.”Dorian M.

Guadalupe River Trail

Great if you are near downtown San Jose, this trail runs 11-miles along the banks of the Guadalupe River. You can enjoy a fresh sea breeze on the north side, and the cool scenery of urban engineering closer to downtown. “This is pretty much going to be my training trail for the next two months before Rock ‘n’ Roll San Jose!” Allen M.

Rancho San Antonio Trail

West of San Jose is Los Altos, Calif.; this is great spot to jog and relax to beautiful views of the whole South Bay. With a variety of trails to suit whatever your workout needs may be. Parking is limited, so early birds get the worms, and a great sweat to kick start your morning!
