STORY LINES

With Byron Carpenter, Kearsten Marion and Andrew Wilson returning for the Bluefield College men’s basketball team, Richard Morgan is confident the Rams will continue to put the ball in the basket. Bluefield enters its first season in the MSC, having finished 19-16 last season, including a third place spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The MSC is a step up to NAIA Division I status, and the league is loaded, with four teams receiving first place MSC votes, including Georgetown, Pikeville, Lindsey Wilson and the University of the Cumberlands. After falling to Marshall in an exhibition, 94-67 on Thursday, the games that count start on today when Bluefield hosts Virginia University of Lynchburg. Up next will be Bluefield State on Nov. 7.

NAIA TOP-25

Four Mid-South Conference teams are ranked and a fifth is just outside the poll in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The four MSC teams are the most from any one conference in the poll. Georgetown College leads the Mid-South pack at No. 3 in the poll. The Tigers -- who are projected to win the MSC the season -- received 231 voting points from the national raters. University of Pikeville joins Georgetown in the nation’s top-10 at No. 9. The Bears garnered 188 voting points in the preseason poll.
