Isla Contoy A lovely boat ride up the coast from Cancún is Isla Contoy, known to many as “The Island of the Birds.” This spectacular 8km- (5-mile) long Caribbean nature reserve only accepts up to 200 visitors a day and no overnight guests, except for the rich wildlife that overruns the island. During a day trip to Isla Contoy, a sharp-eyed adventurer just might see hermit crabs, a stingray, sea turtles and some curious iguanas, not to mention the colorful birds flying overhead, welcoming you to their own little tropical destination. I traveled to the island last year with a group of friends, and we were instantly fascinated by this piece of paradise. Hundreds of bird species call Isla Contoy home, and I was able to hone my birdwatching skills throughout an amazing day. For visitors
El viaje en barco a la “Isla” (como lo llaman los lugareños) es uno de los mejores momentos para disfrutar, con aguas color turquesa coronadas con la vista de Cancún, Isla Mujeres e Isla Blanca. A medida que llegue al muelle, le esperan varias opciones. La mayoría de los visitantes cruzarán la calle y rentarán golf para recorrer la isla durante el día y ver hermosas casas frente a la playa, las pequeñas ruinas mayas, un santuario de tortugas y hasta una gran hacienda construida hace mucho tiempo por el pirata Fermín Mundaca, quien se enamoró perdidamente de una chica de la isla. Isla Mujeres es también famosa por su vida marina, con viajes de avistamiento del tiburón ballena en el verano y buena pesca, buceo y esnórquel durante todo el año. En la punta sur de la isla se encuentra El Parque Natural de Arrecifes Garrafón, donde se puede hacer senderismo, esnórquel, kayak en la zona e incluso nadar con los delfines. También puede visitar el santuario de la tortuga gigante, donde estas maravillosas criaturas marinas están a salvo de los depredadores. Otra opción en el centro de Isla Mujeres y comer en uno de sus restaurantes maravillosos. Después de un almuerzo relajado, disfrutar de un paseo lento por la Avenida Hidalgo con sus tiendas, restaurantes y bares. También encontrará artesanías mexicanas, plata y pinturas de colores caribeños, hechas por artesanos locales. Al final de la Avenida Hidalgo, pase por el colorido cementerio y llegue a la famosa Playa Norte. Este pequeño tramo de costa está bordeado
de arena blanca, con sombrillas, palmeras y acogedores bares de playa donde se sirven bebidas refrescantes de coco. Sin embargo, lo más destacado de Playa Norte es el agua. Imagínese un océano cristalino sin olas... el agua sólo le llegará hasta la cintura y la arena blanca y suave bajo los pies, con los yates anclados y lanchas rápidas que salpican el horizonte. Isla Contoy Cerca de la costa de Cancún se encuentra Isla Contoy, conocida por muchos como “La Isla de los Pájaros”. Esta espectacular reserva natural de 8 kilómetros de largo sólo acepta un máximo de 200 visitantes al día y nadie puede quedarse durante la noche, a excepción de la rica fauna que habita la isla. Durante una visita a Isla Contoy, un aventurero de vista aguda podría ver cangrejos ermitaños, tortugas marinas e iguanas, así como las coloridas
aves que vuelan por encima, dándole la bienvenida a su propio destino tropical. Viajé a la isla el año pasado con un grupo de amigos, y quedamos fascinados al instante por este pedazo de paraíso. Cientos de especies de aves viven en Isla Contoy, y yo pude perfeccionar mis habilidades de observación lo largo de un día increíble. Para los visitantes que buscan aprender sobre la zona, la isla cuenta con un museo fascinante, selvas exuberantes, manglares y un hermoso faro. Nuestra mañana pasó volando con recorridos por los manglares de la isla, dunas y lagunas. Para el almuerzo, comimos pescado fresco preparado al estilo tikin xic, un platillo favorito en Yucatán. Isla Mujeres Visitors have a variety of organized trips to choose from, many of which include lunch, snorkeling and time for exploring, or they can take the ferry and discover the island at their own pace. The boat ride to “Isla” (as the locals call it) is one of the highlights with picture-perfect turquoise water framed by views of Cancún, Isla Mujeres and the far-off Isla Blanca. As you pull into the ferry dock, several options await. Most visitors will cross the road and book a golf cart for the day, making their way around the island to see beautiful beachfront homes, small Mayan ruins, a turtle sanctuary and even a grand hacienda built long ago by pirate Fermín Mundaca, who lost his heart to a local girl. Isla Mujeres is also famed for its marine life, with whale shark trips in the summer, and great fishing, diving and snorkeling year-round. On the southern tip of the island is El Garrafón Natural Reef Park, where you can hike, snorkel, or kayak. You can also swim with the dolphins on Isla or visit the giant turtle sanctuary, where these wonderful marine creatures are kept safe from predators. Alternatively, stick around in downtown Isla Mujeres, eating in one of the wonderful restaurants. After a laidback lunch, enjoy a slow walk down the pedestrianized Avenida Hidalgo, filled with shops, restaurants and a few fun bars. You’ll also find Mexican crafts, silver and even colorful Caribbean paintings by local artists. At the end of Avenida Hidalgo, pass by the colorful cemetery and step out onto the famous Playa Norte (North Beach). This little piece of coast is lined with white sand, umbrellas offering shade, palm trees and cozy beach bars serving refreshing coconut drinks. However, the highlight of Playa Norte is the water. Imagine crystal-clear ocean with no waves… just waist-high water and soft white sand underfoot, with anchored yachts and speedboats dotting the horizon.
