At around 7 p.m. every weekday evening at Hacienda Sisal, next to The Royal Sands, Mexico’s favorite musicians, the Mariachis, serenade diners with famous folk tunes. It is just one aspect of the country’s rich and vibrant heritage celebrated at one of Cancún’s most popular restaurants. It is located in a striking yellow building inspired by the late-19th-century estate houses, or haciendas, built in the Yucatán during the boom in henequen, a native agave plant that yields a tough fiber called sisal, used in ropes. With a large courtyard, colonial fountains, intricate balconies, hand-tiled vaults and murals showing sweeping vistas of Mexican landscapes, Hacienda Sisal evokes all the romance of the country’s past. Its menu is also influenced by the country’s many fresh, flavorsome ingredients and cooking styles, including salsa made from the famous habanero chili, sizzling beef, chicken and shrimp fajitas, Tikin Xic-style grilled fish from the Yucatán and melted cheese and chorizo from Mexico City. “The specialties of the house are El Patrón mixed fajitas, shrimp and lobster enchiladas, shrimp flambéed in tequila and table-side guacamole prepared just the way you like it, whether mild or spicy,” says restaurant manager Jaime Huerta Uribe. If tequila is your tipple, Hacienda Sisal offers an excellent selection. The restaurant has also been accredited with a “Distintivo T” award from CRT, the Tequila Regulatory Council, which guarantees the purity and authenticity of its tequila. “We are also the only family restaurant in Cancún where you can combine a casual dining experience with a fun and authentic dinner show,” explains Jaime.
