Club Bulletin 17th March 2015

President’s Paragraphs We’re halfway through March and it is hard to believe how quickly another Rotary year is passing. As we look towards the end of this Rotary year and start planning for the next, it’s important to think about where we are going as a club and what we want to achieve in the future. And Rotary has lots of great tools and resources to help us along the way. If you’ve been in Rotary for a long time it’s easy to think, yes been there done that, heard it all before. But Rotary is constantly evolving and if we want to continue to be relevant in our communities we need to keep moving, exploring new ideas and adapting to meet the future needs of our communities. So with district assembly fast approaching on Sunday 29th March at Murray Bridge, let’s ensure we have a strong representation from our club. Consider it as an opportunity to, not only to brush up on the latest ideas and thinking coming from district and Rotary International, but to meet other likeminded Rotarians from around the district, network and even contribute your own ideas. With the district conference in Ballarat now only a month away from April 16-19 it is also not too late to register and take the opportunity to get inspired by some wonderful speakers including

Meeting 10th March On 10th March we had the pleasure of hearing from Meri King about Interplast and the vital work they do overseas bringing specialised surgical expertise to people in disadvantaged communities. We learned statistics like 11 per cent of the global burden of disease can be treated with surgery. Two billion people have no access to basic surgical care. Out of 234 million surgeries performed worldwide, the world’s poor get 3.5 per cent and the world’s richest get 73.6 per cent. Countries like close neighbour Papua New Guinea spend around US$76 per capita on health expenditure compared to US $3,382 in Australia. And so Interplast sends surgical teams to places like these and remote communities to not only treat local patients but to provide specialised surgical training and equipment to local doctors.

Interplast provides training and mentoring , including specific mentoring programs in burns management, cleft lip and palate, head and neck surgery and hand surgery. Local surgeons and surgical trainees work closely with Interplast teams during their visits so that they can eventually develop the capability to conduct their own surgical services. We saw the loads of equipment

Brenley that had to be transported and saw how burns patients and cleft lip patients were transformed by the wonderful work that they do. We also heard about Siti Aisyah, a young girl who developed a serious blister rash on her face as a young child that developed into a noma, an infection caused by bacteria which led to the destruction of a substantial portion of her upper lip and cheek, leaving her horribly disfigured and facing extreme difficulty just eating and drinking. Through Interplast and a number of surgeries her life has been transformed into one of opportunity where she is now in pursuit of a successful nursing career.

Meeting 17th March On Tuesday 17th March, we were entertained by the stories and recollections of Scott Thiele, an author who wrote a book about his life titled “Sailor, Spy, Ordinary Guy”. Scott explained that he believed everyone had a story in them and was passionate about people getting their stories down on paper. His own story began after his friends jokingly said he should write a book so they didn’t have to listen to his stories each week at golf. We heard about his life as a sailor and how he was on watch on the HMAS Melbourne in June 1969 in the South China Sea, when it collided with the USS Frank E. Evans at about 3 am and cut it in two during a SEATO joint training exercise, leading to the loss of 74 lives. The Evans had inexplicably turned straight in front of the Melbourne which could not stop, and it turned out two junior officers were steering the Evans while the Captain was taking a break. In the aftermath to the subsequent joint board of enquiry and court martial a training film, “I relieve you Sir” was produced which can be seen on You Tube. We also heard about his life working for ASIO during the cold war monitoring Soviet operatives and then his life as a private investigator after

leaving ASIO, where he got a bad back sitting in cars spying on people pretending to have bad backs. He related some of the stories and the lengths he went to, to video and expose fraudulent WorkCover claimants and dole cheats. All in all a colourful life indeed and a number of members obtained signed copies of Scott’s book on the day.

The Four Way Test Of The Things We Think, Say or Do:

March is Rotary Literacy Month.

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all Concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Literacy is not only a significant goal for Rotary but it is also a special goal for Rotary because we know that literacy is a key factor in overcoming poverty and all that goes with it. Rotary considers it to be so important that it is one of the 6 areas of focus for The Rotary Foundations Future Vision – basic education and literacy.
