Club Bulletin 19th Aug 2014

President’s Paragraph We've had a productive couple of weeks with the Harvey Norman BBQ on August 910th to raise money for St Mary's Kitchen, and helping out the Rotary Club of Glenelg in the Cold Plunge last for Those in Need last Sunday to raise money for St Vinnies and Anglicare Glenelg. A big thanks to all our members who put their time in on the BBQ and who supported myself and Peter Ochota to take the plunge with the water temperature at 13ºC the beautiful sunny morning had little effect other than to cheer our spirits as we slowly froze. The cold plunge was a great idea and I can see great potential for this to grow into something much bigger in the future for the Glenelg club and for Rotary in general. Well done to Jessie Vun and the rest of the club for a well run event and also getting the plunge promoted on News.com and the local media. Thanks to Matthew Carey and Rajni Vasan from the Blind Sporting Council for coming in to speak to us again last week. It is always a pleasure to hear about the great work they are doing and the humour with which Matthew recounts the challenges he faces going about his daily life. This week we had another inspiring TED talk presented to us by Michael Garland from Ziauddin Yousafzai, the father of Malala the young Pakinstani school girl shot in the head for her activism to promote women's rights and their right to an education. It gave us a sobering reminder of how lucky we are to enjoy the free-

doms that we do in this country and the work that is still to be done around the world, not just to feed and clothe people, but to educate, promote peace, goodwill and understanding. Finally as I mentioned at our last meeting, next Tuesday's meeting on the 26th August will be an open club forum. So get your thinking caps on and come to next week with any and all ideas or comments you have on how you think our club is travelling, what we are doing well, what we could do better, news ideas for fundraising or community service, or anything that you feel is important and needs to be discussed. Next week is your chance to get involved so make sure you give it some thought and come prepared

Meetings - 12 Aug/19th August Brenley very cleverly sent around a ‘Cold Plunge’ sponsorship sheet which saw him net a bucket of notes. Peter O decided it was so easy he might have a plunge too (albeit Meredith’s suggestion!) And I got the impression the Board is still working on a date for the wine bottling, but we were assured the vintage was first class this year. Our guests were Matthew Carey and Raj from the Blind Sporting Council. They are both old friends who we have supported for some time. Matthew supplied some interesting insights into being blind by telling us about the challenges associated with simply moving house and having to learn a new transport routine. Raj informed us about the latest developments at the Coun-
