RAY DOVELL CLASS OF 1954

Ray Dovell arrived at Broad and Vine in 1950, hailing from St. Francis Xavier parish in Fairmount. Ray quickly established himself as a skilled basketball player at Roman, as well as a leader. By the time he was a senior, Ray had become one of the best players in the Catholic League and was chosen as the team captain. He helped lead the Cahillites to a respectable 8-6 record and Ray was the 2nd leading scorer in the Catholic League that year with 19.2 ppg. His outstanding play that year earned him an All-Catholic selection. Ray was also selected as one of six “Men of Distinction” in the 1954 RCHS Yearbook. Following graduation from Roman, Ray attended St. Joseph’s University and was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society. He received a B.S. in Accounting in 1958. Ray coached basketball and baseball for 10 years in the Juniata Park Boys Club and was also inducted into the Brewerytown Fairmount Hall of Fame. Ray retired as a Construction Engineer for the City of Philadelphia and was a Master Chief in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He is also a former member of the Professional Society of Civil Engineers. Ray and his wife Margaret raised 3 children (Grace, Raymond, and Joseph) and now have 7 grandchildren. The SHOF committee is proud to induct Ray Dovell into the RCHS Sports Hall of Fame.
