GAY MARRIAGE

Contrary to Obama’s ideas on the Bush tax cuts, Romney would like to make the cuts permanent. He would like to make the lower corporate tax rate across the board to 25%, and cut taxes and regulations to encourage business. He also expressed wanting to cut government spending by 5% in order to avoid exceeding income over a certain amount of time.

Romney opposes Roe v. Wade, and believes states should be able to ban abortions. He originally supported abortion rights, but changed his mind in 2005 while preparing to run for presidency. In the Republican debate at Simi Valley, CA on 5/3/07, the following conversation took place: (http://mittromneycentral.com)

Governor Romney believes that marriage is between a man and a woman, and pushes for a constitutional amendment to define such beliefs. Similarly, Romney does not favor civil unions because he believes they are practically the same as marriage despite the title. “I stood up to fight sam- sex marriage. I was one of the nation’s leading advocates of traditional marriage,” Romney said. (http://content.usatoday.com)

If elected, Governor Romney plans to immediately utilize a system in which individual states craft a health care plan that best suits the citizens, in lieu of Obamacare. Romney plans to allow the states to regulate “local insurance markets and caring for the poor, uninsured, and chronically ill.” From this, he hopes to “restore state leadership and flexibility, promote free markets and fair competition and empower consumer choice.” (http://www.mittromney.com/issues/health-care)

ECONOMY

Obama believes a woman can get an abortion if she wishes, and he supports Roe v. Wade. While this case extended women’s decision to have an abortion, it also allowed the state to regulate abortions to the extent that they feel necessary. Obama also criticizes Supreme Court decisions upholding bans on partial birth abortions. (http://cnsnews.com)

Obama would like to get rid of Bush tax cuts for households earning more than $250,000, and have lower taxes on manufacturing industry. He would also like to promote stimulus spending and tax cuts on the middle and lower classes to improve the economy, as well as cut spending and raise taxes on wealthy to lessen the deficit.

PRO-CHOICE

ECONOMY

Under Obamacare, President Obama is pushing to provide a health care system that not only assures access to preventive care, but also protects people from abuse by insurance companies. Obama plans to “help those with Medicare save on the care they need to stay healthy, hold insurance companies accountable, and end the insurance company practice of charging women more than men for the same coverage.” (http://www.barackobama.com/health-care/)

Since stepping up to the political stage in 2004, President Obama’s views on gay marriage have shifted. However, as of May, Obama became the first American President to publicly support gay marriage saying that he is “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex marriage. “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said. Malala

14-year old Malala Yousafzai (a 2011 nominee) became internationally renowned for her fight for girls’ education rights. She and Two other girls were attacked by the Taliban on their way back from school in their hometown of Swat Valley, Pakistan. Now receiving treatment for the gunshot wounds in her head and neck out of her home country of Pakistan, Malala has become an even bigger target for the Taliban. In one interview, Yousafzai said “They cannot stop me, I will get my education, if it is in-home, school or any place. This is our request to the whole world that [they] will save our schools, save our world, save our Pakistan.” Read Malala’s Blog: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/ south_asia/7834402.stm

Amina (last name undisclosed for privacy puposes) was born and raised in Ghana, Africa, where she worked at earning a strong education for herself. However, as a young teen, she was threatened of being taken out of school and forced into marriage. This is a common situation in several African countries for young girls to be put straight into marriage without getting a proper education. Amina was spared from the arranged marriage by her teachers and local authorities, and because of her passion for children’s education, Amina started the “Achievers Book Club” at age 16. Her organization strives to provide education for children by distributing books and money to the struggling schools in Ghana. Amina hopes to continue the fight for educations rights, and hopes to spark a light of inspiration to young people all around the world. Anyone can make a difference. photos provided by childernspeaceprize.org

Anwara Anwara, 16, (last name undisclosed for privacy purposes) from the West Bengal region in India, gained notoriety for her fight against the human trafficking in her area, specifically of young girls. Anwara’s father died when she was nine years old, and she was traded to a local trafficker in exchange for some money and a share of her monthly salary. In 2008, Anwara was freed by a local NGO (non-governmental organization), and since then has helped to get 200 children back into school, and has stopped several cases of young human trade. In addition, she has put pressure on local authorities, which has helped prevent numerous early marriages.

Kesz Kesz (last name undisclosed for privacy purposes) grew up in the midst of poverty in the Philippines. As a young boy, he was horribly abused, beaten and abandoned by his family. After three years of unbearable mistreatment, Kesz ran away from home and lived with a local social worker. When asked what he wanted for his seventh birthday, Kesz response was simple: something to give to the impoverished neighborhood kids around him. From there, Kesz started the “Championing Community Children” program which aspires young people living in poverty to take life into their own hands by accessing education, jobs, and resources. The organization also distributes “HOPE GIFTS;” packages with slippers, clothing, soap, toothbrushes and toys. Over the past seven years Kesz’s organization have given out over 5,000 “HOPE GIFTS” and helped 10,000 children. Learn more about Kesz: https://www.facebook. com/kesziam

Fashion Statement Are Ashland teenagers unique who care more about personality than appearance? Of course not. In the recent poll at AHS, the ideal wasn’t classy or wacky but instead, normal. Women dressed their ideal man, men dressed their ideal woman.

Men’s Perspective by Gabe Young

Girls:

Everyone has certain saying they live by. When it comes to how you dress in high school, try following the old adage “Less is more and tighter is better.” First, Ashland has a temperate climate, so who needs a heavy coat? I’ve found that most of those who settle for less end up happier and much more comfortable. Second, who wouldn’t want to show off those newly-toned muscles (a result from weekly bikram yoga.) Third and final, yoga pants are, well, perfect. They can be dressed up or down. The convenience allows the wearer to not worry about a belt, and the style offers such rewards as improved flexibility and a sharp increase in the number of boys asking you to lunch.

The Beanie

28%

Men, Didn’t feel like showering last night? Throw a beanie on. Women voted it to be most attractive.

The Hoodie

39%

Ladies, you’re free to sleep in an extra ten minutes. Just throw on that old hoodie and call it good.

The Tee-Shirt

46%

Men, Although 34% of AHS women would rather see men without a shirt on, guys, there’s a time and a place.

Most days, we look at the quad and mutter under our breath “put some pants on.” Whether it’s yoga pants, leggings or one of those tight black skirts... just no. Leggings may be comfortable, but most of the time you look like a slob. As long as you dress practical you have our blessings. If you dress for others, stop stressing. Go wear that neon windbreaker. It’ll attract more than the oxford shoes and jean jacket combo. Just don’t go showing off your ASSets and all will be well.

The Yoga Pants

68%

The Fitted Jeans

Ladies, The most liked clothing article for girls was yoga pants, no doubt for similiar reasons that “shirtless” was written in for girl’s tops. What you must understand is we all know you are not wearing the fitted material for your own comfort.

66%

Men, no girl appreciates the skinny jeans. Unless you’re Ashton Kutcher, stick with the fitted Levis.

Men, Just do it.

After slamming the snooze button, boys shove themselves out of bed and off to school to arrive as the bell rings. Don’t pretend that you don’t know that girls are spending hours to get ready while you laze around until last minute. You can put SOME effort in getting ready in the morning. Also, if it’s freezing outside, why do you choose to wear shorts and t-shirts? There’s frost and you’re all pretending like this is Malibu. Just because you can face the cold doesn’t make you anymore of a man. Trust me, we love the sensible guys. So how about you all get up a half hour before school instead of the usual ten minutes. Don’t worry; you are going lose sleep, but it willl be for the greater good

To be honest, I don’t think anyone really cares what guys wear to school. However, if you wish to mix things up every once in a while, try some of the following: jorts, trench coats, fedoras, leather jackets, and of course, crocs.

Vans/ Nikes

Women’s Perspective

The Zip Hoodie

50%

Men, there’s nothing more attractive than the casual swagger of a zip hoodie. It shouts “I look good without trying.”

Flight Attendant

Who would have thought that those pesky ladies who refuse to give you more than one peanut snack per flight could develop into a playful and flattering outfit? After all, once a year you do get the chance to be anything at all, so the sky and your imagination is the limit.

Sailor

There is a fine line between sexy and over the top. One of the Rogue News’ reporters ventured into the local costume store, Renaissance Rose, to identify that line. by Sita McGuire “Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it,” Cady, Lindsay Lohan’s character in “Mean Girls,” said. And it’s true. So why do girls dress like “sluts” on Halloween? And why do a lot of people bash them for doing so? First of all, Halloween is the one time a year we can be someone or something we are not, which is exciting. We can dress up and be our favorite super heroes, celebrities, inanimate objects, classic horror monsters; anything we want. But for girls it goes something like this. Sexy cop. Sexy Disney Princess. Sexy Mario Brothers. Sexy Banana. Just add sexy in front of anything, and you’ve got the majority of your female Halloween costumes any year. But where is the point when sexy, becomes inappropriate?

A Halloween classic, this costume’s purpose isn’t to show off your impeccable sense of naval direction, but to just give yourself an excuse to pull off a short, blue dress without being mistaken as a Smurf. If you want to show your patriotism to the great blue, why not dress yourself up as a scuba diver?

Construction hard hats and grease Worker Mmm, stains ─ that’s exactly

what you imagine when you hear of construction workers. However, when looking at this costume, it really doesn’t leave much to the imagination. We’re hoping you can set down that hammer and nail, and consider the clothing policies that require you to actually wear something for this line of work.

Be respectful; be spooky Extra pumpkin guts? by Sita McGuire

Halloween should be a frightfully fun time of year, but it can be deadly if you’re not careful. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk drivers nationally kill more than three times as many people during Halloween than on New Year’s Eve. On that note, make sure you: • Never assume a car will stop for you. Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you. • Walk on sidewalks instead of the street. • Never dart out into traffic or jaywalk. • Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms. • Remember AHS’ golden motto: act responsibly, have integrity, show respect.

Avoiding Trick-or-Treaters by Natalie Acheatel As children mingle through neighborhoods, winding their way from house to house, collecting their hoards of candy, there is always the house that has its lights off, blinds closed and lacks the bucket of love. Although these houses tend to disappoint the throngs of kids that push their way to the door, with grabbing hands, these houses may have good reason. Ever wished you could ignore the constantly ringing doorbell, and just have some peace and quiet? This Halloween try the following solutions: • Shut the curtains • Resist putting up the spooky decorations • Fight the urge to buy the massive amounts of candy • Turn off the lights • Ignore the frequently ringing doorbell

Ashland High School’s production of the musical comedy “The Drowsy Chaperone” centers around the middle-aged Man in the Chair and his wild fantasies about the mythical 1920s musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The characters pop to life as the Man in the Chair spins his record player to his favorite musical. During each song, he acts as the narrator and spells everything out for the audience. The actual plot of the musical within the musical follows the famous actress, Janet Van de Graaff, and her desire to settle down and marry a debonair, Robert Martin. However, not everything can be perfect. Feldzieg, Janet’s ever-so greedy producer, is against Janet’s desire to be bound in holy matrimony. For if she gets married, Feldzieg will lose his job. With these contradicting forces, Janet looks to the help of her friend, a very Drowsy Chaperone, to determine her marital future. “The Drowsy Chaperone” is a delightful and quirky musical that is sure to make an impression on all.

Q&A with the Monster Rogue News: When did you start playing water polo? Miles Furuichi: I was recruited my 8th grade year by Christi Gilmore to come to a summer camp. RN: Why did you start playing? Furuichi: It seemed like a fun sport and I thought I’d give it a shot. RN: Are you playing water polo outside of the school team? Furuichi: Yes, I’m the starting goalie for the Pacific Northwest Water Polo team, and I’m also on the Portland Junior Olympics team. I have to do a lot of traveling for both, but I really enjoy playing on them. RN: Even though you’re a goalie, have you ever scored any goals? Furuichi: Actually, Yes, I have scored three crosspool goals.

The Squad

RN: What was your favorite game so far in your career? Furuichi: I’ve had some really good games, but I think the game when we won state last year was just the greatest feeling. It doesn’t get much better than winning state alongside your team. RN: I hear water polo’s a pretty tough sport, so what are some examples of the physicality of the sport? Furuichi: I was once triple-teamed and facepalmed by three kids, but in a separate game I took the ball from a kid, then raked his eyes with my hand while he was underwater [he laughs]. RN: What is the best aspect of playing water polo? Furuichi: Personally, I love the atmosphere of the team and coming to practice every day to work and have a blast in the pool. We’re a family. RN: Do you plan on continuing with water polo after high school? Furuichi: That is the current plan. I would love to play in college and possibly beyond.

The boys’ water polo Team is having yet another fruitful season. With successes against both 5A and 6A schools, and wins in every league game, the Grizzlies are gearing up for a deep run into the postseason tournament. The team was dealt a tough midseason blow, as scoring threat (and one of the State of Oregon’s top players) Taos Cadarette-Stewart was lost for the year due to a broken finger. The squad completely changed their offense and strategy in an attempt to compensate for the loss. “Everyone is doing a great job of collectively stepping up in Taos’ absence. We’ll easily be able to make up the difference, both on offense and defense,” Defender Alex Sukles said.

Praise “Miles is the best goalie in the state. He saves us constantly, and it’s great knowing he is there to bail us out. He commands the pool very well, and allows us to focus on other aspects of our games.” – Jericho Walker-Roberts, teammate “Not only is [Miles] good at blocking shots, but he is a strong leader in and out of the pool. He’s a great team player and a good role model for the younger players.” – Andrew DelCarlo, head coach

“Miles is very dedicated to his position as goalie. He makes amazing blocks that most certainly are a huge contribution to the success of the boys team. He guides the team as well from the goal and is a pleasure to watch.” – Julie Kasiah, water polo fan
