Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Welcome from the President Dear Rockhurst Community and our guests, Welcome to today’s athletic contest! We are so grateful to come together in the spirit of competition that serves the development of the young people we serve today. Rock Thanks! Of course, there is so much more than competition that takes place in the educational purposes of athletics. Students learn teamwork, self-sacrifice, perseverance and dedication. They learn how to accept feedback and guidance. They learn how to handle themselves when things go well and when things do not. Whether winning or losing, they learn how to be reflective in what went well and what did not in order to grow in continuous improvement. The lessons are many and they transfer to greater lessons in life, but the purpose of today’s activities are rooted in the education and formation we are called to provide young people. We wish for all those participating to grow in what it means to practice sportsmanship. And this is the appropriate context for those who cheer them on in competition. Whether we are classmates or teachers, siblings or parents, friends or alumni, we are here in support of the young men who play. May our support be reflective of the highest callings that ground the purpose that answer the question ‘why’ we are here. We come together with great gratitude for many who make today’s contest possible. Rock Thanks! to our officials who provide much needed structure for the best of all involved. Rock Thanks! to our athletic directors, coaches, administrators and staff from all schools who work hard on many details that orient themselves for the best conditions to serve our students. Rock Thanks! to our parents, friends and benefactors who support the mission of Rockhurst and insure our very ability to live out this aspect of our mission. And finally, as a Jesuit Catholic school, we thank God – Rock Thanks God!, for the many gifts and talents of the student-athletes who share in competition today. We ask that God keep all of our athletes safe from harm and call forth in all present today to our best selves for the greater honor and glory of God. We are so glad to be with you today! Enjoy the game. Go Hawklets! Rock State! God bless,

David J. Laughlin President

Mission Statement Rockhurst High School serves the greater Kansas City area by educating Ignatian leaders, “MEN FOR OTHERS”, in the Roman Catholic, Jesuit college preparatory tradition. A little bit about this year’s Program... Rock PROUD, Rock TOUGH...What is a key component of Rockhurst athletics? It is how the present tries to build from the tradition. It is helping young men recognize that the process is more important than the product. This year’s All Sports Program attempts to share with you how our current students are full of hopes and dreams. The sky is the limit for our Hawklets as long as they understand and commit to the many traditions rooted in the daily process. These traditions have been built over time. Formation has always been our focus and when these young men in this edition of the program this season make commitments to work hard, be a great teammate, trust their coaches, have fun, build life-long friendships and give their best effort, they have achieved the purpose of Rockhurst athletics. Those are the hallmarks of Rockhurst athletics and have helped to build character and confidence over the years. And yes, we believe that championships also come out of this philosophy. So, enjoy the images, the stories, the hopes of this year’s Hawklets as they look to the clouds to dream big and work hard to make it a reality! Rock STATE!

Welcome from the Principal

Vision Statement Rockhurst High School will be sought out and recognized for its ability to educate men-for-others. Rockhurst High School will, in the Jesuit tradition, foster lifelong friendships based on enduring principles and Ignatian values. It will be nationally and locally recognized as the best value-added education because of its success in developing community leaders for an increasingly diverse world.

Welcome to Rockhurst High School. I especially welcome our visitors and guests. Rockhurst has a strong tradition of excellence in our athletic programs. I believe that our athletic programs play an important role in our desire to educate young men in the spirit of St. Ignatius of Loyola. It is our hope that all of our programs assist the young men at Rockhurst to become leaders. Athletic competition provides a means for our students to develop their God-given talents. Participation in our programs teaches our student athletes to work hard, become part of something greater than themselves, and practice good sportsmanship. Being part of a team and working together creates enduring memories of life at Rockhurst; these memories will last a lifetime. I offer my sincere thanks to Mr. Mike Dierks and Mr. Kevin McGill and to the coaches, managers, trainers, team physicians, parent volunteers and staticians for making our athletic programs so meaningful to the young men at Rockhurst. I also appreciate Mr. Mike Dierks ‘91, Athletic Director, Mr. Robbie Haden ‘09, Director of Communications, and Mr. Curran Steck ‘13, for their tremendous effort in publishing this year’s edition of the All Sports Program. As an alumnus of the class of 1981, many of my memories of life at The Rock are of joining my classmates as we cheered for the Hawklets. I look forward to, once again, cheering on the Hawklets with colleagues, parents, alumni, past parents, and all fans of Rockhurst. Thank you for your dedication to all we do here at Rockhurst High School. AMDG Sincerely yours,

Each participant spends a day “shadowing” one of our freshman through his daily class schedule. Visitors report to the Admissions Office at 7:50 a.m. and stay until the end of the regular school day. As an added bonus, lunch is on us! Visit the admission section on our website to schedule a shadow day.

Placement Test

Every student who plans to enroll in any Catholic high school in either Kansas or Missouri must take a standardized placement test. The test will be administered at Rockhurst High School at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018 and Saturday, January 12, 2019. Results of the test will be used to identify potential candidates for honors classes and also help the admission committee determine summer school attendance.

Financial Aid

Rockhurst annually awards $2.4 million in financial assistance to its students. The financial aid awarded to students varies according to individual merit and financial circumstances. Aid awards are determined after taking into account an analysis by an independent agency of the family’s need, the applicant’s academic performance, and his enthusiasm for a Rockhurst education. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and other donors, Rockhurst awards scholarships to many of our incoming and returning students. With few exceptions, scholarship awards are based strictly upon merit and financial need. Aid eligibility requires that a family file a financial aid statement with the Director of Admission and Financial Aid, but no separate application is necessary to receive scholarships. In addition to need-based scholarships, an incoming freshman may qualify for one of four different academic scholarships based on his composite score on the high school placement test. To be eligible for either scholarship, an eight grader must have: - B+ average in his seventh and eighth grade years - Received a positive teacher’s recommendation - Taken the placement test at Rockhurst High School Academic scholarships ranging from $500-$2,000 are awarded to incoming freshmen who achieve a composite score between the 96th and 99th percentile on the High School Placement Exam.

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Welcome from the Athletic Director One of the missions of cocurricular school activities is to serve as an extension of the classroom. There are strong lessons to be learned in athletics. Lessons include setting and maintaining high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in our schools and our society. It is up to us to provide the direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a positive impact on our children, the leaders of tomorrow. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all coaches, players and spectators at our events. The value of the lessons learned by exhibiting good sportsmanship will last a lifetime. If we ever lose sight of that, then athletics is not worth sponsoring. The positive actions of a coach, athlete or spectator at an event can influence how our school is perceived in our own community and the communities of those schools we meet on the field of play. Sportsmanship, quite simply, translates to citizenship for our young men and women and all those involved with the interscholastic program. Through our programs young people learn and practice RESPECT ‌ respect for self and respect for others.

We are asking for your support in this effort by emphasizing to your son what is expected of them at an athletic event as a competitor or spectator. After all, such events are an extension of the school day, and we should expect the same type of respectful behavior exhibited in the athletic arena as we do in the classroom. We urge you to ask your children to demonstrate self-control and self-discipline and at the same time, enjoy the games. Finally, we ask you to set a good example when in the stands at an event. It is only through these efforts that we can clearly communicate what is acceptable behavior. We hope that your positive example will help set the tone for those around you so we may all enjoy the games our athletic teams are involved in. Sportsmanship starts with you! When you purchase a ticket to an athletic event, you are given the privilege to view the action and to voice your support of our teams. We want that support to be in a positive tone. Simply put; let the coaches coach, the players play and the officials officiate. While in the stands tonight, cheer for the Hawklets and make us proud! We look forward to serving you this year and appreciate your continued support of Rockhurst athletics.

Thanks!

Sportsmanship Paul McGannon Athletic Trainer Mr. Paul McGannon brings 30 years of experience and has joined the Rockhurst faculty and staff full-time. Previously he was at Sports Rehab doing athletic training coverage and as part owner of the company. A graduate of the Rock (`72) Paul went on to earn his BA at Rockhurst University and his MA in Science Athletic Training from Central Missouri University. His biggest sports influence was being part of the 1985 World Champion KC Royals. An avid hockey fan, Mr. McGannon is a part of NHL21 Civic Group, which attempts to bring NHL games and ultimately an NHL franchise to Kansas City. Mr. McGannon and his wife have three sons: PT, Brian and Kevin.

It is the desire of Rockhurst High School that good sportsmanship be practiced by students, players, coaches and fans. Acts such as throwing items on the playing surface, participation in vulgar cheers, participation in cheers against referees, etc., will be considered offensive to RHS as they don’t teach good sportsmanship. Violators will be escorted from the game and could be banned from attending future Rockhurst activities. Please support your school in a manner that will reflect positively on both you and your school.

Hall of Fame

The Rockhurst High School “Sports Hall of Fame” honors alumni, coaches, and friends who have had a major impact of the school’s athletic tradition. Given The Rock’s storied heritage of sporting excellence in the Midwest, selection to the Sports Hall means recognition among the “best of the best” in Midwestern athletic history. The Sports Hall was established in 1991 by legendary coach and athletic director, Al Davis, Jr., along with his devoted student and friend, Mike Lillis ’56. Since the Charter Class of five men was inducted, the Sports Hall has grown to 111 members, including one of the largest classes to ever be inducted this year. Honorees were determined by a Selection Committee that carefully reviews nominations by Alumni Class Captains, as well as recommendations from the public at large, before submitting a slate to Rev. Terrence Baum, SJ, president of Rockhurst High School, for his blessing. Formal induction ceremonies occur each year during the Alumni Reunion Weekend. Members of the Sports Hall have distinguished themselves in many ways and were considered for a variety of reasons to be honored. A breakdown of some of the categorical members is listed above.

Jim Dorlac ‘88

Jason Tyrer ‘88

Bill Dunn, Sr. of the great Class of 1940 is one of the longest lifetime supporters of Rockhurst High School. Now known more for his philanthropy, Bill was revered in the late-1930s for his accomplishments on the athletic fields. He was the starting fullback who played a key role on the 1939 football team that went undefeated. But Bill really stood out on the baseball diamond, where he starred for the school’s first baseball team his senior year. The 1940 team played just six games, but won them all. Bill was the starting and winning pitcher for four of those games. After leading Rockhurst to an undefeated season, Bill and many teammtes would play for the Murray Davis American Legion Team that represented Kansas City in the State baseball playoffs. They beat the defending Champions, which featured Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola before getting knocked out of the tournament. Combining the spring and summer seasons, Bill would go 13-1 as a starting pitcher.

Jim Dorlac of the great Class of 1988 was the conductor during the best two-year stretch in Rockhurst football history. After being thrown into the starting quarterback role with just two games left in his sophomore season, Jim led the Hawklets to consecutive wins. He would get used to the taste of victory. Over his junior and senior seasons, Jim orchestrated a high-powered veer offense that went 23-2 and won backto-back State Championships for the only time in program history. Jim’s running ability, matched by his passing threat, kept Rockhurst rolling down the field every game. His decision-making was the deciding factor in a twominute drill that put the Hawklets into field goal range for the game-winning kick in the 1986 State Championship. Named a team captain senior year, he earned 1st Team All-District and AllMetro honors, as well as 2nd Team All-State. Jim would go on to play at Benedictine College.

Jason Tyrer of the great Class of 1988 anchored two of the best defenses in the history of Rockhurst football. A star defensive end that was constantly double-teamed, Jason was a terror to offenses. He led the Hawklets to a whopping 12 shutouts in 25 games over his junior and senior seasons; 23 of those games were Rockhurst wins. When teams did score, it wasn’t many points. Opponents averaged just 4.8 points per game in 1986 and 6.5 points per game in 1987. Both seasons ended in State titles. Jason became a two-way player during his senior year, also playing a huge role as a strong blocker and receiver out of the tight end position. In the 1987 State Semifinal game against Jefferson City, Jason caught a touchdown pass and blocked a punt for a safety, which boosted the Hawklets to the win. He was also named a captain senior year and went on to 1st Team All-State recognition. Jason continued his career at KU.

Tony Blevins ‘93

Kevin Kopp ‘93

Jim Gates ‘96

Sean Connelly ‘98

Tony Blevins of the great Class of 1993 earned his spot on the football field as just a sophomore. Considered “undersized” by appearance, he was said to be the hardest hitter on the field, pound for pound. Tony was a highlight reel on both sides of the ball; breaking off big rushes at running back and intercepting passes at cornerback. In Tony’s senior season Rockhurst earned a national ranking of 12th in the USA Today Super 25, while averaging more than 31 points per game. Tony scored 15 touchdowns, while also intercepting 4 passes and averaging over 25 yards per punt return. Garnering countless accolades during his high school career, Tony was named Player of the Year in Kansas City, a Simone Award Finalist, and a USA Today AllAmerican. Tony stayed close to home at KU, despite having Division 1 offers from across the country. He would then go on to play his way into the NFL for three seasons.

Kevin Kopp of the great Class of 1993 was an eighttime letter winner here at The Rock. He was varsity for three years in track & field, two years in basketball where he was an Honorable Mention All-District and AllMetro player, and three years in football where Kevin really stood out. He earned his way into the defensive starting lineup as just a sophomore and led the Hawklets in sacks, and from there on out continued his knack for finding the ball carrier. Leading a vaunted defense, Kevin gained individual notoriety his junior season, earning 2nd Team AllDistrict and All-Metro honors. Kevin wowed the Midwest his senior year, noted as a top defensive player in the surrounding states. He earned 2nd Team All-State recognition and was runner up for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the best lineman or linebacker in the KC area. Kevin still ranks among the top sack leaders in Rockhurst history. He went on to be a starter at KU for two seasons.

Jim Gates of the great Class of 1996 made the switch from baseball to golf after his freshman year; a decision that would heavily affect the Rockhurst golf program. For the next three years, Jim would help lead the squad to three straight top-five finishes at State. Individually, he was the top Hawklet finisher as a sophomore, placing 14th out of 160 golfers. Junior and senior years he would put himself in the running for the best big class golfer in Missouri. In 1995, Jim won Districts and the Hawklets won the team title. At State, Rockhurst placed 4th and Jim was the individual runner-up. His senior year, coming off of a mid-season wrist injury, Jim returned for Districts. He again won the individual title and the Hawklets won as a team. Rockhurst played its way to a 2nd place finish at State; and Jim notched another runnerup finish of his own, earning individual All-State honors all three years. Jim continued his golf career at Kansas State.

Sean Connelly of the great Class of 1998 was the first lacrosse star not just at Rockhurst, but also in Kansas City. Sean is a founding member of the lacrosse program, which was recognized as a varsity sport in 1996. In just the sport’s second year in existence, and Sean’s junior year, he put Rockhurst lacrosse on the map. Already the team’s leading returning scorer, he captained the squad that went 8-4 and reached the State Semifinals. Sean was named 1st Team AllConference and All-State. Sean’s senior season, the Hawklets went 6-5, but had two one-loss games against St. Louis powerhouse DeSmet, which had been an established program for several years. Sean was again leading scorer for The Rock and was renamed All-Conference and All-State. He was also named the Missouri Player of the Year. Sean played collegiately at Boston College, becoming the first Rockhurst graduate, and player out of Kansas City, to play Division 1 lacrosse.

As a college preparatory high school, Rockhurst is committed to helping students discover collegiate opportunities and programs that meet one’s academic, spiritual and social needs. Each student who graduates from RHS has the ability to succeed in a college or university setting. The academic foundation instilled by our faculty is the greatest bridge afforded to our students as they make the transition into collegiate studies. Thanks to the context in which our students learn - both in the classroom and through co-curricular activities - each graduate is able to embrace new settings, relationships and disciplines through a myriad of lenses. The philosophy of the College Counseling Office is to understand and serve the specific needs of each student while enabling him to find a suitable and satisfactory match for his college experience. Through comprehensive programming, which introduces students to the world of college early in their Rockhurst experience, our students receive personal interaction and education opportunities throughout the year. Ownership of the college selection process belongs to each of the students, while we gladly assist with their exploration, application and matriculation. With over 3,200 colleges and universities in the United States, there is a suitable place for each and every graduate. RHS students attend colleges all across the national with the largest percentage concentrated in the Midwest. 17% of our 2018 graduates are attending a Jesuit college or university this fall.

Recap Runners continue to be in the mix for top honors in state After building the program for numerous years, Rockhurst cross country is annually one of the most competitive teams in the state. The Hawklets earned three consecutive top-five team finishes in Missouri from 2014-2016, and last season they made it four straight with a 4th place finish. Added to the 2017 team’s success was a Sectional Championship, in which the Hawklets edged out Blue Springs. The two schools went toe-to-toe most weeks of the season and seemed to always be within just points of one another. “It is great to have such strong and well-coached teams in the To remain at area so that we can test oura high level in selves weekly,” said Head Coach Missouri, it takes Michael Dierks ‘91. Along with the Sectional timaintaining a tle, the Hawklets would win big positive team meets throughout the regular season, including the Forest culture. We have Park XC Festival in St. Louis and a great group of the KC Classic. The team also guys who are all finished 2nd out of 44 schools on the same page. throughout the midwest at the Rim Rock Classic at KU. “Our team had great chemisLuke try and really excelled racing in big meets. Hupke ‘19 It was fun to coach them last season,” said Coach Dierks. The consistency of the team’s success was helped guided by Peter Campbell ‘18 and Andrew Connor ‘18, both four-year runners in the program and members of the 2016 State Championship.

Experience returns with high ceiling With five of the top seven runners from last year’s State Championship Meet returning, the Hawklets hope to move up the podium from 4th place finish in 2017. A talented senior class, led by Tom Seitzer who finished 5th individually as a junior, will look to match Rockhurst’s State Title in 2016. Although only Seitzer was part of that varsity team, other members of this team saw first-hand what it took to attain the top level of success. “Seeing the full season’s worth of work pay off was a big motivation. It showed us JV runners

that we were part of something bigger than ourselves and that ultimately our hard work could pay off,” said Luke Hupke ‘19. Some of those who will be relied upon for a shot at a State Championship include seniors Patrick Mullen, Ben Legg and Hupke. The junior class boasts high caliber runners as well. Wes Porter was All-State as a sophomore and is looking to be a top tier runner in Missouri, while classmates Matthew Ingle and Michael Donnellan enter the season expected to score in meets.

The expectation for this season is that everyone is onehundred percent all in on the program. The talent is already there, so as long as guys buy in to our goals, the results will follow.

Head Coach - Mike Dierks Entering his 24th year at the school, Head Coach Michael Dierks relies upon his runners to be self-motivated and passionate. He recognizes that it is the internal drive which must motivate endurance athletes. In his 22 years as the head coach, the program has qualified for the state meet 12 years (including the past 10 in a row). They have also advanced past the district meet in all but 3 of his seasons. As a runner at the University of Notre Dame, Coach Dierks has brought a strong pack running philosophy to the program. He is also in his 6th year as the school’s athletic director.

Recap Playoff run stems from versatile seniors A season that ends in October is never a good sign; Head Coach Tony Severino wants his teams playing in mid-November. The 2017 Hawklets reached the target month by earning a spot in the District Championship, or State Quarterfinals. Rockhurst was able to bounce back after stumbling out of the gates, losing its season-opener for the first time since 2013. Following the slow start, the Hawklets would win five of the next six games, including victories over Bentonville (AR), Pomona (CO) and Shawnee Mission East. Rockhurst went 2-0 against East in the two-year series. Coach Severino’s team enLeadership by tered the postseason at 6-3 and the seniors is a battled out a 7-0 win over Lee’s Summit North in Districts, folbig part of our success because lowed by a gutsy comeback win over Lee’s Summit West. The they know what Hawklets came up short against Park Hill in the District Chamit takes to win. pionship. All three games, and most of the season, were fueled Josh by Brady McCanles ‘18. Moore ‘19 McCanles was a tireless workhorse who led the team in rushing, receiving, punt returns, kickoff returns and touchdowns. For the season, the 2nd Team All-State player averaged 24 touches and 184 all-purposes yards per game. Meanwhile the trenches were anchored by 1st Team All-State defensive lineman Jacob Syke ‘18 and 2nd Team All-State offensive lineman Joe Glaser ‘18.

2018 to feature new players, opponents The 2018 football season will feature a slew of new opponents on the schedule. Bentonville (AR), Pomona (CO) and Shawnee Mission East all rotate off, while Blue Valley, Bishop Miege and Battle all enter. Rockhurst and Miege have not faced off since 1984, and the Hawklets have never played Blue Valley or Battle. The rest of the schedule contains familiar foes Rock Bridge, Blue Springs, Ray-Pec, Blue Springs South, CBC and Jefferson City. Along with the new opponents, Rockhurst

will see new players on its own sideline. Luke Boehm ‘19 takes over quarterback responsibilities, while the backfield will feature RJ Pascuzzi ‘19 and Michael Johnson ‘19. Key returnees include cornerback Josh Moore ‘19 and defensive lineman Sawyer Crawford ‘19, both 2nd Team All-District selections last year. Experienced offensive linemen Joe Kelly ‘19 and Danielson Ike ‘19 will look to open up holes for the backs.

Our goal this year is to win State. The first step in that process is holding each other accountable both on and off the field.

Danielson Ike ‘19

Edward F. Bukaty Award The Edward F. Bukaty Award was given to Rockhurst by Alex George, Sr., in memory of Edward Bukaty. Mr. Bukaty was an avid supporter of Rockhurst. He suffered a heart attack and died while watching his son Joe play in the 1952 Lillis/Rockhurst football game. Every season since the Bukaty Award was established, a senior is selected by the football coaches and players as the recipient of this prestigious honor. The criteria, set by Mr. Alex George and former head football coach Mr. Al Davis, is to honor the individual player displaying the greatest leadership both on and off the field. The award criteria also state that the individual should lead by example and should have the respect of both players and coaches. Since that time, 64 young men, including Joe Bukaty, have been selected for this special honor. Football All-Time Team

In 1970, Rockhurst and DeLaSalle played their 50th and final football game. A select committee from each school named an All-Time Football Team. Twenty years later, during the celebration of Rockhurst’s 75th year of football, the All-Time Team was updated. Rockhurst coaches have reviewed the many years of football teams and individual players and then honored additional players, naming them to the All-Time Hawklet squad yearly with the school criteria of having graduated five years ago. Head Coach - Tony Severino Coach Severino is entering his 36th season as head football coach. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. Receiving an athletic scholarship to Kansas State University, he completed his undergraduate while playing football there and later earned his Master’s at University of Kansas. He is married (Marilyn), with three sons - all Rockhurst High graduates. Coach Sev teaches Lifetime Sports, a student favorite. He feels that Rockhurst athletic histories impact the school’s traditions because of the pride everyone feels when they are successful; they never want to let down those who preceded them.

Coach Berg is in his third decade of coaching football at Rockhurst. Coach Berg was a three-sport athlete at Rolla High School, including All-American in football and continued to play at the University of Missouri. At Mizzou he was named 2nd team All Big Eight and the most valuable player of both the Liberty and Hall of Fame Bowl games. He came to Rockhurst because he had the opportunity to pursue those things he really wanted to do with his life: coach, counsel and teach. He and his wife (Deb) have two daughters (Rachel & Laura) and two sons (Scott ‘09 and Kevin ‘12). He is defensive coordinator and coaches the linebackers.

Coach Mo has patrolled the sidelines, the court and the track since he has been at Rockhurst. He is in charge of the offensive line. A RHS grad himself (‘74), Coach Mo has been a part of the football coaching staff since 1984. His education after RHS includes a BA from St. Louis University and his MA from Loyola-New Orleans. A member of the theology department, he teaches Catholic Faith in Practice I & II. He and his wife Katy have three children: Kevin (RHS ‘04), Clare and Dan (RHS ‘11).

Re-joining the coaching staff in 2010 after a tenure in 200002, Coach Charbonneau coordinates the special teams and coaches defensive backs. Competing in football, wrestling and track at Bishop Ward High School, he then went on to be a three-year starter and captain of the football team at Benedictine College, Kan. After earning his degree in Social Science, he has coached at several schools including: Bishop Sullivan, DeSmet, Seton Hall Prep, Delbarton and Rockhurst. He is a full time teacher in the theology department. He is married to his wife Joan and has two kids: Cecil and Nila.

Recap Hawklets run the table against Missouri competition Going into each season, the Rockhurst soccer season has one goal: win the State Championship. The 2017 Soccer Hawklets accomplished just that for the seventh time in program history. Rockhurst cruised through its first four games of the postseason to earn a spot in the Final Four. In the Semifinals, the Hawklets would avenge their crushing 2016 State Championships loss in penalty kicks to CBC by beating the Cadets this time 2-1. In the Finals, The Rock used goals from three different seniors, William Crowe, Frank Barry and Kyle Ruark to pull out a 3-2 ChampionThe senior ship win over Vianney. On top of that, other smaller leadership on the team goals were also reached team, especially throughout the season. Head Coach Chris Lawson’s team Kyle Ruark went undefeated in the Blue and Camden Springs South, Top Dawg, and Go 4 The Goal (Iowa) TournaSchieffer, played ments. a huge role in The Hawklets jumped out to a 12-0 start on the season, scorkeeping a high ing 46 goals while conceding just tempo at practice four goals during those first dozen matches. That earned them and a positive a top-10 spot on USA Today’s locker room vibe. Super 25 National Rankings. Rockhurst would lost just three games during the season, and none to Jackson teams in Missouri. Ebersole ‘19 With a 27-3 final record, Rockhurst scored 103 goals and allowed only 25. Leading the offensive charge was Ruark, who had 26 goals and 13 assists. He was named the Missouri State and Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as an NSCAA All-American.

Defense returns, offense to fill holes New players will have the opportunity to step up for the 2018 Soccer Hawklets in pursuit of back-to-back State Championships. Nearly all of the goal production of last year’s title team graduated, which means that younger players in the program will need to fill the gaps left. Thomas Gansaner ‘20 played in every game as a sophomore and now will be relied upon for offensive production from his forward production. The defense could be The Rock’s key facet this season. Veteran starting goalie Jack-

son Ebersole ‘19 will be protected by returning starting defenders Jacob Hiss ‘19, Liam Bailey ‘20 and Kyle Ziegler ‘19. They will be tested often throughout Rockhurst’s annual challenging schedule, which features two great teams in the Annual Jesuit Classic, Gonzaga Prep (D.C.) and Marquette University High School (WI). Rockhurst will also face stiff competition locally in the Blue Springs South Tournament and matches against Blue Valley Southwest, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. James Academy.

With many new faces joining the team this year, leadership is key to success. Although we lost a lot of seniors last year, our expectations have not dropped.

Jake Hiss ‘19

Soccer All-Time Team While our soccer program has been quite successful since its days beginning in the winter, the All-Time Team is a recent addition to recognize individual players who were hallmark players and instrumental to the success of the program in their eras. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school soccer career warrants consideration. The player must be five years out from graduation. Congratulations to these important players and thanks for your talents, toughness, tactical skill, and much more.

Head Coach - Chris Lawson A three-sport athlete at Sacred Heart High in Sedalia, Coach Lawson decided to focus on soccer after high school. He went on to play goalie at State Fair Community College and Park University. Now in his 25th year heading Rockhurst soccer and 24th as a Social Studies teacher, he has two sons - Mel (class of ‘09) and Owen, (class of ‘20). One of his favorite coaching memories was seeing Owen dog pile with the players after winning the ‘07 and ‘08 state titles. He believes that very few schools have attained the type of traditions that Rockhurst has and holds in academics, co-curriculars and spiritual retreats consistently on a state or national level. Coach Lawson teachers Senior American Government and is the Social Studies department chairperson.

Recap Great regular season followed by 11th at State Rockhurst’s swim and dive team, known as the Aquahawks, carried an undefeated dual meet record and top invitational finishes into an 11th place at the State Meet. For the regular season, the Hawklets swm and dove their way to a 10-0 mark in dual meets, defeating teams from across the state including Nixa, Kickapoo and Lafayette. They also won six multi-team meets including the 12-team KC Classic, 20-team Springfield Invitation and the 9-team Independent League Championships (ILCs). The only falter in the regular season was a 2nd place finish behind St. Louis University High School at Last season was the DeSmet Invitational. Having won every dual we competed in and winning all but one invitationMcCann ‘19 al we attended, we had a lot of success,” said Henry Kasyjanski ‘19. “Although we didn’t place where we would have liked to at State, I think we had a good run up until then.”

122

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Headline for one defining moment The Aquahawks will look to build off of the growing experience of younger swimmers and divers to climb back up the ranks in Missouri swim and dive. Of the 13 Aquahawks who competed at the State Championship Meet in 2017, eight return for the 2018 season. Among those are Dylan Nill ‘20, who placed 6th in the 500 Freestyle and Henry Kasyjanski ‘19, who placed 10th in the 50 Freestyle and was a member of all three relays. Nine of the 12 members of the relays are back this season.

Also returning to the pool is the most decorated head coach in Missouri boys’ swim and dive history, Head Coach Paul Winkeler. He led the Aquahawks from 1999-2014 and in that stretch won 11 consecutive State Championships, was named Coach of the Year 11 times and a threetime finalist for National Coach of the Year. “I am excited about the depth of the program and the versatility of the swimmers. I feel confident in both our youth and our leadership,” said Coach Winkeler. “The program is loaded with team chemistry.”

This year, we have the highest chances of getting back on the podium at State since the 2015 team. Based on what I have seen so far, I think we have a real shot of doing well.

The team was recently created and with a young history, this list represents pioneers who helped establish the sport to the point where it is feared across the KC Metro area and the state of Missouri. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school swim & dive career warrants consideration.

Recap Team play leads to deep playoff run The Basketball Hawklets enjoyed their best season in five years. Led by a talented group of upperclassmen, Rockhurst could adjust its game plan night by night to overmatch opponents en route to a 22-6 season record and deep playoff run under Head Coach Pete Campbell ‘89. Head Coach - Pete Campbell Coach Campbell begins his sixth year as head coach after 18 years as an assistant. A Rockhurst grad (class of `89), he helped bring home a basketball state title in 1989; a feat made possible in part due to his game winning shot to make it out of the quarterfinals, and also in 2013 when he was the varsity assistant coach for the state championship team. He went on to get his BA from Mizzou and MA at Baker. He is married with three kids: Catelyn, and twins Emma and Will. Coach Campbell served as the athletic director for 6 years but has returned to the classroom and teaches freshman math. Without coaching or teaching, Coach Campbell says he would be broke - he can’t do anything else.

Recap Seniors lead Hawklets to Sectional Game For the first time in five years, the Baseball Hawklets captured a District Championship. Rockhurst battled through a wet spring season that often affected practice and game schedules; seven games were either postponed or cancelled during the two-month playing season. Home games against out-of-state opponents Creighton Prep (NE) and Bentonville (AR) were forced to be cancelled. The other 29 games that were able to be played featured a senior-heavy team capable of offensive explosions at any moment. In various games, the Hawklets notched 13, 16, 17 and 20 runs. The last of those numbers was The seniors’ the best showcase of the team’s leadership was high-power potential. Young players to fill open field With only two starting position players returning for the Hawklets, most would look at that as less than ideal. Rockhurst looks at this as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity for players who have watched and learned from older Hawklets to step up and leave their mark. Because last year’s team had so much senior talent, seven of whom signed to play in college, it didn’t leave many at bats for underclassmen. Many will now have their chance.

Those returning with experience will be relied upon immediately, while the newer players get used to the consistent varsity level of play. They include 3rd baseman and pitcher Luke Schafer ‘19, catcher Jaxson Wentworth ‘19, and pitchers Gary Zancanelli ‘20, Stone Hewlett ‘20, and Will Walsh ‘20. According to Wentworth, despite much varsity experience returning, the expectation to get through Districts and to the State Tournament remains.

This year, like every other, the goal is to win Districts and then the State Championship.

Recap Golfers play their way to 3rd at State Although only the top four scores are taken in team tournament golf, it really takes five players to win a State Championship. Other players must step up when a teammate has a bad round. For the last two years, Rockhurst has had a freshman step up for the Hawklets at the State Tournament. In 2017 it was Michael Bessenbacher ‘20, and in 2018 it was Liam Coughlin ‘21. Bessenbacher was the fourth scorer for the State Champion Hawklets and the next year Coughlin was the second finisher for The Rock. The 2018 season ended in 3rd place, earning the program a 17th conThe 2018 secutive top-3 finish at State. Top players return in pursuit of podium Despite losing three three players from last season, the Rockhurst golf team has much to look forward to in the spring. The team’s top player in 2018, averaging 37.5 per nine holes, was only a freshman. Liam Coughlin ‘21 returns following a 17th place finish in that State Tournament. The only Hawklet to top him at State was fellow underclassman Michael Bessenbacher ‘20, who finished 11th. He was the lone Kansas City area golfer to earn AllState honors.

The Hawklets will need players to fill the three open spots. One candidate is Jack Dwyer ‘19, who averaged just one stroke higher than Rockhurst’s number five golfer in 2018. He ranks as the number three returning player for The Rock. “While it may be harder this year losing the guys we did, I have a lot of confidence in our program’s history and believe we will have somebody step up and help lead the team, whether that be a senior or a freshman.” said Bessenbacher.

Six seniors graduated, so this year everyone is going to have to step up and fill their shoes so we can get back on top of the podium.

Recap Team plays through adversity, lands in Semifinals The Rockhurst lacrosse team overcame a midseason skid to earn yet another spot in the Lacrosse Association of Kansas City (LAKC) Final Four. As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow in Kansas City, so does the competition within LAKC. Local schools and clubs like Shawnee Mission East, Blue Valley, Pembroke Hill and Northland seem to improve each season. A four-game losing streak in the regular season led to Rockhurst being a 5th seed heading into the playoffs. Experience returns with high hopes Rockhurst will lean on the experience of numerous returning lettermen to try to get back to the Lacrosse Association of Kansas City (LAKC) Championship, which the Hawklets last won in 2017. The Hawklets return two of the top four scorers from last season, Mason Vasta ‘20 and William Muehlebach ‘19. They tallied 39 and 15 goals, respectively. The defense will feature Tommy Eckels ‘20, who was 1st Team All-Metro as a sophomore.

Also returning are two goalies, Michael Kuklenski ‘20 and John Thurlo ‘19, who saw action last season. Rockhurst tries to schedule a few national opponents each season to face top competition. Last year the team traveled to Colorado to play Regis Jesuit and Highlands Ranch. This year’s team believes its has the pieces to compete with anyone.

We all have another year of varsity experience now, and we have no excuse why we can’t take the championship.

Recap Tennis team earns shot at defending champs Getting to the State Championship and giving the team a chance at the title is the annual goal of the Rockhurst tennis team. For 24 straight seasons, the Hawklets have made it to the State Final Four. But not every year they are able to play for the Championship. In 2018, they gave themselves a shot. Following a successful regular season, Rockhurst started the postseason in great fashion, with a 5-0 District win. Collin Klumb won singles, while the doubles teams of Graham Colombo ‘18 & Nick Hare ‘18 and Max Dunmire ‘18 & Nathan Bodde ‘19 placed 1st and 2nd, respectively. Throughout Sectionals was much of the the season same, as the team won 5-0 and Klumb and both doubles teams all our for State. The Hawklets cruised mentality. through the quarterfinals and semifinals with a combined 10-1 Andrew score. The State Championship stage Kopulos ‘20 was set between Rockhurst and Rock Bridge. The Hawklets were unable to take down the reigning champions and brought home the program’s sixth 2nd place finish, to go along with 18 championships.

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Rock hopes history repeats itself For the last 13 years, either Rockhurst or Rock Bridge has won the Class 2 State Championship. If they continue coming in threes, as they have in the last nine years, then it’s Rockhurst’s turn to take back the podium. The Bruins won State from 2010-12, the Hawklets won from 2013-15, and Rock Bridge again from 2016-18. Rockhurst would like to keep that back-and-forth trend going. In order to do so, the team will need to replace five of the top eight players who graduated. The top returners are Donovan Walsh ‘19,

Nathan Bodde ‘19 and Andrew Kopolus ‘20. The trio combined for a singles record of 21-5 and a doubles record of 33-6. But these players know that despite recent history, a trip to the Final Four is not a given. There is competition here in Kansas City before planning a trip to Springfield for the Championships. “ To make it back to State, our team first needs to focus on a win against a highly-talented Liberty team,” said Kopulos.

Energy is what propels a tennis team and allows them to dominate on the court. If we have that, there is no doubt in my mind that we can make and win State.

Veterans to work under new coach A new, but familiar face will take over as head track and field coach in 2019. Rockhurst welcomes Troy Harding, who has been the head coach of Blue Springs South for the last 19 years. He inherits a program that returns six runners who competed at State last season. Among them is long distance standout Wes Porter ‘20, who ran 4:24 in the 1600 as a sophomore, making him the second fastest underclassman in Missouri Class 5. “I’m looking to be the State Champion in both

the 1600 and 3200,” said Porter. “The expectations for the team are high as well, considering we have many of our varsity guys returning.” Porter will be challenged by teammate Tom Seitzer ‘19, also a top distance runner in the state. More high expectations come from AllState performers Micah Nelson ‘19, Joe Coit ‘19 and Clint Purcell ‘19. Pole vaulter Will Hull ‘20 looks to add field points at State, after placing 12th as a sophomore.

Expectations for the season this year are very high. We proved last year that we can make it to State and compete.

Micah Nelson ‘19
