“I carried the stones to the workshop in school. I bought kerosene for 2, 5 liras. I lit the gas oven and tried to melt the stones. The stones wouldn’t melt. When the stove leaked gas I fainted after a while. My teacher found me unconscious on the floor. When I came to, my teacher asked me what I was doing in the room. And when I told him that I was trying to melt the stones he said: “How could you possibly think that you can melt stones? Are you delusional? I forbid you to enter this room.’’ When he couldn’t melt the stones, half of Batuhan Bozkurt’s painting remained empty. While he was thinking how to fill in the blanks Bozkurt who started breaking the stones filled the rest of the painting with them. The painting which was sold at a high price at the exhibition in the school was the first artwork Bozkurt had done using this technology. Here is Bozkurt on the subject: “I was called in by the headmaster. He said (Son, we sold your painting but I won’t give you the money, you’ll just spend it. I will give you half of it, you’ll make another one but it will be all stone and then we’ll give you half of the money again). They gave me 625 liras in cash. I constructed my father’s grave. And on the tombstone I have them write “what came from stone went to stone”

Stones of the world become colors on canvas Batuhan Bozkurt who depicts his artwork with a technique he calls “Pebble Modern Mosaic Technique” paints them with dust from natural stones instead of regular paint. Bozkurt who implements a difficult technique masterfully while painting his art with the dust from natural stones uses 500 different minerals he gathers from Turkey and abroad. Bozkurt who breaks precious or semi precious minerals such as hematite, pyrite, serpentine, manganese, sapphire, basalt, marble and granite with sledgehammers and turns them into pure stone by sifting them, stores them in bottles. The making of Bozkurt’s paintings, which are turned into works of art by him gluing stones onto plywood or MDF surfaces, lasts 3, 5 – 4 months depending on the size and figures in the painting. The artist’s longest lasting artwork is Raphael’s “School of Athens” which he has been working on for 2, 5 years. The artist who has made many artworks and opened a handful exhibition says that his next target is to start workshops and share his art with people.
