Stickers go in rego shake up ■From Page 31 “We’ve been told as of July 1 there will be no stickers issued and for the average user, it won’t make the slightest difference, except you won’t have to peel the old one off and put the new one on.� Mr Weeks, who is a member of the Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club, said it was a topic of discussion at the group’s last meeting. “I think it would be fair to say that most of the (members) were a bit like me and said ‘well, I can say a few negatives about that and can’t really see it’s go-

ing to achieve too much’,� he said. “On the other hand, we can’t see it will be any sort of major problem for any motorist, including club members.� The difficulty with the new registration system will be policing it, according to Mr Weeks. “From the point of view of the police administering the road traffic act, the argument from the Motor Registration Department is they have a computer and they can instantly check from the number plate but what if the number plate is falsified?� he said. “From the point of

view of a potential car buyer, or someone looking at the car, you can’t cross check the rego disc and the engine number and be sure that it’s all right.� Mr Weeks said classic cars will not be instantly noticed as being on a conditional registration, which is currently shown on the registration sticker. Barmera man John English, who is also involved in the Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club, said he will not be phased by the registration changes. “As I understand it, we will receive a reminder just as we do now,� he said. “It’s just there is no

sticker there.� The new registration rules apply to vehicles under four and a half tonnes, with renewal periods also changing from three, six, nine and 12 month periods to three and 12 month options. People will be able to check their vehicle is registered at www.sa.gov.au/ ezyreg and a hotline and iPhone application will be available as of July 1. The South Australian Police will also use high tech detection methods to book motorists using unregistered vehicles.
