Color combos

The artful fall color palette

Designer Carolina Herrera gives the gowns in her fall collections an unexpected color twist, combining shimmering gray-blue bodice with a warm coffee-colored skirt.

hink you can get away with wearing that same old black suit this fall? Think again. Fashion is all about color this year, says Lee Eiseman, color expert and executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

And it’s not your typical dark greens and browns sprinkled with aa little li cinnamon on top. It’ s time to get creative with your y fashion coloring box and put together some new combinations that will make your wardrobe feel like a work of art. “Designers are taking a painterly approach to fall bright colors with staple 2011 by artfully ccombining o reminiscent of how an artist would construct neutrals, reminiscen a stunning work of of art,” Eiseman says. “Much like a painter’s masterpiec masterpiece, there is a certain romance to this season’s palette.” knowwcreating a masterpiece isn’ t all But you kno that easy. So how do you go about putting together show? There are plenty of designers out your own art show inspire there who can ins p you with some new ways to incorporate colors iin your wardrobe. Eiseman’s favorite new combos is phlox (a One of Eisema shade of purple) tea teamed up with cedar green and deep that honeysuckle – the holdover from teal. “I also feel tha spring – is a great m mix with phlox and cedar,” she says. These colors are aregreat g for color blocking – another designs – i.e., juxtaposing trend taking over runway r strong colors one o on top of another. Coffee liquor (a shade of brown), bamboo (yellow-green) and emberglow (soft orange) are more according to Eiseman. But typical fall combinations, combin not-so-traditional approach and try take another not mixing nougat (w (warm a tan) with quarry (gray) and orchid hush (a(atone to of gray with complex orchid undertones). “Thes “These are fall’s quiet neutrals that look good together or orjuxtaposed singly against other combinations ment mentioned before,” she says. Many designe designers take their color cues each new fashion season fr from o Pantone, a well-known color authority, to give ttheir h collections fresh color palettes that consumers wil will want to buy to freshen up their wardrobes. This fall, fal there may not be one “it” color , ways to combine what you but there are defi nitely n other pieces in more unusual ways. already have with o Here are aafew fe tips from Pantone to get you started on creating your own artful masterpiece: • BAMBOO brings ini a warm, exotic fl avor to the season. Like a fifilt ltered sunset on the waning days of fall, bamboo is a sstandout yellow with a subtle green undertone. This dappled shade pairs dramatically with several of the top 10 Pantone fall hues, including phlox, tteal and honeysuckle. Publishers CLIFFORD RICHNER STUART RICHNER Executive Editor JOHN C. O’CONNELL Section Editor KAREN BLOOM

Editorial Designer JEFFREY A. NEGRIN Vice President of Sales RHONDA GLICKMAN Account Executives JOAN BATTINO

• RADIANT EMBERGLOW, a traditional autumnal tone, conjures up the warmth of a glowing fi re. Combine emberglow with coffee liqueur for a classic look or with honeysuckle for something a bit more retro. Add a spark with shoes or a handbag in emberglow or perhaps a patterned scarf combining phlox or deep teal. • HONEYSUCKLE was such a hit from spring that you won’t be surprised to see it again on the fall palette. This playful reddish pink works with any other color in the fall Pantone palette, especially the fall staples coffee liqueur and nougat. Honeysuckle also takes on a darker tone for fall in deep reds – such as crimson, another favorite hue of designers. T o add some contrast, pair these reds with complementary bamboo. • PHLOX is a deep purple with a hint of mystery and makes an outstanding statement when worn on its own. Add phlox to this season’ s neutrals to create a bit of drama, or combine it with cedar green, deep teal or coffee liqueur for something out of the ordinary. To add even more drama, pair phlox with honeysuckle or bamboo against a cedar background – a combination inspired by Mother Nature. • CEDAR is a versatile midtone neutral green and is a natural with deep teal and sophisticated with phlox or orchid hush. • DEEP TEAL, my personal favorite this fall, is a strong blue-toned green. It is very new and interesting when teamed with cedar, its neighbor on the color wheel. Deep teal is also a unique counterpoint to honeysuckle. As you can with any of the stronger colors in your wardrobe, set off deep teal with the classic fall neutral coffee liqueur, which is a great alternative to basic black. • NOUGAT (sounds good and tastes good) is a softer tan, and it also sets off phlox, emberglow or orchid hush. • QUARRY is a medium gray you can expect to see cropping up in the artistic fashion color palette this fall and is another relief to black. It will blend perfectly as a great background to bolder colors. The best color advice for fall? “Just do something unexpected,” Eiseman says. “Experiment with different color combinations that you’ve never worn before. It will be chic and modern.”

Accessories Report The bold and the beautiful

I

By Sharon Mosley

t’s over-the-top when it comes to fall’ s newest fashion accessories; we’re head over heels in love with the big bags, the pumped-up shoes, the collars and the cuffs – and the fuzzy fur hats, well, fur sure those are a must-have! After all, we don’t live by clothes alone, do we?

to be taken straight out of an old “Tuxedo Junction” throwback, with bow ties and fl oppy bows making a comeback. This is an easy trend to follow – and an inexpensive way to add some chic style to your white shirts.

So what are all those bold and beautiful necessities that we will want to add to our wardrobes this fall? I’ll tell you. And start your shopping list now; you don’t have to wait until it gets cold to indulge in these extras:

• BELT IT. With the focus on the waist this season, it just stands to reason that belts would be a major accessory. From chunky decorative wide belts to simple classics to slimmer jeweled belts for dressier occasions, there’s a belt to cinch in every look. But the newest way to show off the midriff is to sash it with a big black swath of fabric. Contrasted with colorful dresses, pants and skirts, the black sash makes a bold statement.

• GO FOR AN EXOTIC HANDBAG. The big bags are still around this fall, though they’re more structured; the squared doctor’ s satchel will be a big hit. But the smaller clutches and pouchettes are becoming more and more popular , especially when done in exotic snakeskin prints. For even more fun, check out the fuzzy new fur handbags.

• GO HAND IN HAND WITH GLOVES. N ow what’s a fall and winter without a new pair of gloves to get you really warmed up all over? From short leather gloves embellished with embroidery to more dramatic elbow-length styles in exaggerated silhouettes, the glove love is a bold extra to include on your shopping list. The perfect addition to those fuzzy handbags!

• PUMP IT UP. Shoes are always one accessory that can update a wardrobe instantly, and this fall, look for more wedges, lots of high-heeled loafers and booties (the Beatle boot returns!), and classic pumps once again take their stand. • MAKE A STATEMENT WITH JEWELRY. You may have the ladylike pearls and the diamond stud earrings already , but you’re going to want to go bolder this fall. Give your wardrobe a big punch with meant-to-be-seen jeweled pins and cuff bracelets, as well as glitzy cocktail rings. • GET COZY WITH HATS AND HEAD WRAPS. Hats were all over the fall runways, from furry oversize Russian trapper styles to knit beanies and berets to structured retro cloches. Head wraps also showed up in many designer collections, from sheer scarves to caps of metallic armor. This is defi nitely one accessory on your fall shopping list that will have to wait until the first frost sets in. • WRAP UP WITH NECKWEAR AND HEADGEAR. The fur was fl ying again this fall in long, shawl-like fur scarves and collars topping off sweaters, coats and jackets. Are we expecting a blizzard or something? Anyway, everyone should own at least one of these fuzzy wraps; the colorful ones are the most fun! • TIE IT UP WITH A BOW. Another major neckwear accessory seems

2011 FASHION TRENDS Sleek and chic, classy pieces with new daring combinations set the tone for the season. Sophistication prevails as the influence of decades past makes the old classics new again. Be Brilliant

This fall, opposite attraction goes beyond the traditional soft versus hard combination. Merging the unexpected with touches of Edwardian, this trend continues to be flirty and romantic, but with a touch of fantasy and vivid color. Craft, shine, velvet, lace, leather furs, and feathers make this a very individualistic style. Key elements: black leather, brocades, digital prints, embellishments feathers, fur, lace, lame, ruffles, sheer chiffon, shimmer, velvet.

Classic Remix From true American sportswear to a modern remix of past decades, the classics get a new look for Fall 2011. Fabrications put a twist on iconic styling with chiffon, charmeuse, suede, and leather taking the lead. Leopard, Fair Isle and tweed take on a new life in small accents or all-over prints. Key elements: cashmere, checks, grey flannel, leather trims, leopard, plaids, shine, stripes, textured knits, tweed.

Green Dream Among sleek skyscrapers is an urban kind of wilderness where rustic elements come out of the woods and into the cityscapes. Hitting the pavement are cool, urban silhouettes, seasonless fabrics and transitional prints that easily metamorphose from the pastoral to the metropolitan. Key elements: Airy knits, animal prints, camouflage, crochet, graffiti and digital prints, hardware, leather, pointelle, poplin, quilting, suede, twill.

The new power suits Suit up in style

W

By Sharon Mosley

hat to wear to work this fall? Just relax. That’s what fashion designers are doing when it comes to suiting up for the new season ahead.

After all, women are tired of getting all uptight tight when when choosing clothes that look professional but still ut still are are pretty and polished – and comfortable. “The suit is fashion’s equivalent of an Elvis vis CD. We all own at least one,” says Paula Reed, authororofof“Style “Style Clinic.” “Whether it refl ects your entire lifestyle estyle or reflects just an element of your taste or is is simply something you once thought you ought to have, the suit is the common denominator of modern wardrobes.” Even though most people don’ t wear a suit to work every day , Reed says it is generally “our fi rst line of defense when we need to be taken seriously.” Choosing a suit can be daunting, she adds. “A lot depends on its making the right impression. A sloppy or badly made suit will impress in all the wrong ways. A well-made suit becomes your backdrop, setting you off as the serenely capable and elegant person you know the world wants to see.” This fall, fashion designers have given n women many more alternatives to the e traditional “power suit,” softening up offi cee wear with unique styles that offer dozens of f creative possibilities. Reed shares some tips for “working” these new power suits: • Avoid boxy jackets under all circumstances. They look heavy and fl atter no one. Makee sure your waist is defined, if only by the inward ard curve of the side seams. It doesn’ t have too be be extreme; even the hint of defi nition will make ke aa suit look sharper. A straight drop from armpit pit to hip has an instant thickening effect. • N othing will mire you in middle age fasterfaster uttons than chunky fabrics, patch pockets and buttons resembling costume jewelry. op, and • The best investment starts with the perfect top, d a top that isn’t necessarily a jacket. When you fi nd d a skirt you love, it’s worth buying both trousers and suit’ss to match it. In one go, you’ll maximize yourur suit’ versatility and longevity. edby bythe the • If you feel your effervescent self is suppressed ress your-sober suit you have to wear to work, express your velty items, self with a bright lining – but never with novelty items, don’tt have such as suspenders and bow ties. Girls, we don’ to dress like men anymore. Remember? ussy details. • Nothing ages or dates a suit faster than fussy details. Avoid flouncy peplums, embroidery, wide lapels, els, intricate intricate pleats and shoulder pads with a life of theirtheir own.own. If you want to make statements, do it withhwhat whatyou you

have on underneath and with accessories. • Consider a curvy suit with a hint of stretch. The curves deliver impact. The stretch ensures comfort, practical packing and instant recovery to its sharp and sexy self, even after a long flight. At all times, think lean, not tight. Cost should not be your only indicator of quality. q Technology today ensures that a great sui suit can be found at every price point. What matters more is that it fits and flatters you. To be sure of what w a great fi t feels like, why not try on an exp expensive e suit and get the benefi t of advice fro from an experienced salesperson? Then apply what you’ve learned in a shop that better suits your budget. • Ve Vertical lines created by pinstripes or princess seams will elongate your bo body. • If you’re worried about your hips, opt for a longer jacket. Long h trousers worn over heels will slim tr yyour legs. • Dark tones create a long line, and a colorful or light-colored top will shift focus to your face. • Double-breasted jackets add width, will make a large bust look larger and overwhelm petite women. However , they also can camoufl age a small chest and add power to a boyish figure. • SSingle-breasted jackets are more flattering on just about everybody. F Full busts are most fl attered by the d deep V-neck of a single-breasted jjacket. • Petite women look great in cropped jackets jacke that sit on the waist or the hips. T Taake some advice. Canadian designer Lida Baday updates u the new power suit this fall with a darted jacket and slim skirt in speckled tweed worn over an asymmetric top in striped Lurex jersey.

WAISTED A method for any figure By Sharon Mosley This fall, it’ s time to accentuate the positive and focus on fashion’s newest erogenous zone – the waist. Take a deep breath and cinch it all in. Forget the breezy tunic tops of summer; rein in your best assets and show off those curves. Check out the newest sashed dresses, form-fitting belted jackets and Empire-style blouses. “Have you ever noticed that some women never make a fashion misstep and always seem to be flawlessly pulled together?” asks Jenny Levin, author of Harper’ s Bazaar’s “Great Style: The Best W ays to Update Y our Look.” “Take a closer look and you may notice that those whose sartorial sense you admire may wear the same style over and over. They know how to emphasize their assets, obscure what they aren’ t so proud of and make their bodies look their absolute finest.” Here are some tricks from Levin on mastering the art of defi ning the waist and making the clothes you wear flatter your figure: • Whether you are tall or short, a size 2 or 12, cinching in your middle almost always creates a feminine and flattering line. • Pick pieces with a slim belt or ribbon for subtle definition. Or for a more dramatic effect, choose a super-wide waistband, such as a cummerbund or an obi. • The waist doesn’t have to be smack in the middle. A drop waist elongates your torso, and an Empire gives you a leggier look. • Details on the waist – for example, big bows – work well in distracting the eye from your top or bottom. • Extremely high-waisted styles will make your legs seem miles long. They are a good option when you prefer midlength skirts. • Avoid anything overly adorned or patterned. The simpler the better when it comes to a streamlined look that shows off your waist. The effect works best in solids. Loud colors, prints and embellishments detract from the dramatic impact. • Halter dresses and asymmetrical styles are ideal for showing off your waist. Pick pieces in draping jer sey that shield but simultaneously emphasize curves. A woman with a very thin fi gure can benefi t from the draping fabric and the dress’s ability to emphasize the waist. A full-fi gured woman looks great in the hourglass-enhancing silhouette and the loosely falling fabric. • A deep V-neck on a gown or cocktail dress – or even a slight plunge on a more casual top during the day – will detract from your hips and accentuate your waist. • Dress up old classics with a new belt. Cinching your waist over your suit jacket not only instantly gives your suit a new look but also introduces a sleek and flattering line. Go for a belt that matches for a conservative approach, or add spirit with one in a contrasting hue. • You also can play up your curvy assets at the waist by choosing pieces with details, such as beading or ruching, at the midriff. Remember that feminine clothes that enhance the hourglass shape are always flattering. To accentuate your figure, experiment with wearing form-fitting dresses and skirts that are cut diagonally or on the bias. They should nip in at the waist, hug the hips and fall loosely over the thighs and calves. Be brave; be a body-hugger this fall!

Retro is in – and when it comes to necklaces and bracelets, layer away because this year, more is more. ell-dressed women on the south shore fl ock to Alexandros Furs, on Franklin Place in Woodmere, where attention to detail, customer service, and an extensive assortment of the latest styles are the hallmarks of this Five Towns institution.

Alexandros Furs offers an array of sleek, fashionable fur coats, wraps and other fur accessories in its 2,000 square foot showroom. The store also restyles and refurbishes old, damaged or simply outdated furs. “With our experience and expertise in working with and designing fur garments, our creative team offers you a unique experience, turning the fur you’ve dreamed of into a reality ,” says store owner Anastasio Politidis. “Alexandros is not your typical fur boutique. Where other salons tend to be very conservative, we go the extra mile to set ourselves apart. We’re not afraid to experiment with new materials and design ideas,” Politidis explains. The same can be said of the woman who is drawn to the salon. Refined, stylish and chic – her wardrobe makes a statement about her individuality and taste. Whether wrapped in traditional mink or tie-dyed French rabbit, it’ s the woman that makes the coat. Heading up the boutique’s creative design team, store owner

and principal designer Anastasio Politidis, who hails from generations of furriers in Greece, is trained fashion designer who started out as a fur/leather designer and patternmaker. He has spent two decades creating luxurious garments that set off his clients’ best features. His customers are assured that his team will provide the quality and style they desire at an unparalleled price. Alexandros is the perfect fi t for those seeking a relaxed setting where the customer comes first. “The entire experience – from looking, buying and wearing the garment – should be a pleasant one. When you’re at Alexandros, I’m going to treat you like a guest in my home,” says Politidis. Another of the boutique’s defining features is the stunning variety of styles and materials. From today’ s top American and European designers, as well as Politidis’ own creations, his showroom is fi lled with fur , leather, shearling and accessories. Sizes range from petite to plus for men, women and children. Home accessories such as pillows and throws as well as novelty items can be found in the salon. Services include storage, cleaning, reconditioning, repair , appraisals, shearing and dying. Alexandros specializes in the custom design of new

garments, and can work miracles on older and inherited items that are no longer a reflection of you, Politidis says. “Fur has never been as hot as it is now ,” according to Politidis, who says that the industry has been revitalized. “Fur was stagnant in the early ‘90s. There was no innovation. Now fur has revitalized itself and every collection today has fur . Designers became attracted to fur as a medium and starting using it more and more. It’s a good thing for us, as it’s bringing in a younger customer.” Fur has an appeal that it didn’ t used to have, Politidis says. While shearling is popular , it’s still fur that fashionistas prefer. “For someone who doesn’t want to spend the money on fur, that’s where shearling comes in. When you buy a fur coat, you know it has a long life expectancy and can be restyled. Shearling isn’t as adaptable.” Whether your taste tends to the classic or contemporary , Alexandros has your style. Politidis and his team are ready to help you find the fur of your dreams.

Must-haves for fall 2011 Stretch your clothing budget with the season’s standout pieces By Chandraa Orr

L

ooking to tap into the season’s hottest trends on a limited budget? Nab a few killer coordinates and splurge on fall’s must-have accessories for a look that’s very in vogue.

“Many trends have longevity; you just have to pick the right ones,” says fashion stylist Marissa Rizzuto, who specializes in designer looks for less. “Splurging on accessories is smarter than splurging on clothing. Y ou can always fi t into your accessories, but clothing is another story . Plus, you’ll always get more use out of your accessories.” If you can afford only a few key pieces this fall, get the biggest bang for your buck with the season’s must-have handbag and the perfect pumps. Pair these of-the-moment accessories with trend-driven yet classic clothing that will look great even as the styles change. “When it comes to spending, spend on quality pieces that are essential for the season,” says personal shopper and fashion stylist Lauren Franks. “Pick versatile pieces you can style in different ways to make sure you get the best bang out of your buck.” If you are only shopping for a few items, “marry these new fall trends into your current wardrobe for an affordable wardrobe refresher,” Franks says. “If you choose carefully , you can stretch your wallet to hit both great accessories and clothing.” Even for frugal fashionistas, these trends are worth the splurge:

PLATFORM HEELS

Forget the sexy stiletto. Platform heels are back in vogue. From strappy satin wedges and reptile-skin pumps to rocker boots with biker-chic buckles and knee-highs with fierce yet feminine lacing, fall’s best footwear features a super-high chunky heel. “Thank goodness for that platform heel,” Franks says. “This fall, grab a pair of closed-toe platform pumps. Think oxford, penny loafer or Mary Jane, and add a 4-inch platform. It makes walking 4 inches above the ground just a tad bit easier when you have a platform area versus the tiny area of a killer stiletto.” N ail the trend by pairing chunky patentleather platforms with thick tights or scrunched socks in contrasting colors – or both – to mimic the looks worn on the designer runways.

PERFECT PANTS

If you can afford only one great pair of pants for fall, look for perfectly tailored trousers or wide-leg jeans. “Fall fashion defi nitely has a masculine influence. Incorporate this into your wardrobe by investing in a pair of tailored trousers – and don’t hem your pants too short,” Franks says. SATCHEL HANDBAGS “This season is all about lengthy trousers. BOLD COATS

“Coats are always a good investment. They keep you warm and can be worn season after season,” Rizzuto says. “This season, bright coats in red, orange and blue are super-trendy.” Fall’s coolest coats pair classic styling with electric hues. Think traditional onal peacoats in rich coral or lemony mony chartreuse, biker-cut cover-ups ups in electric periwinkle and deep p green, and sleek knee-length numbers in plum purple and tomato red. Shoppers also will see plenty of feminine details, such as oversize princess collars and romantic ruffles. s. “My advice is to stickkwith witha aless lessbright bright color. WHAT’S IN STYLE

overing up never has been so stylish! This season, jackets stole the show on the fashion runways, and here are the hottest trends for your outerwear panache, straight from some of the top fashion experts.

Fall’s trendy waist-length, or cropped, jacket is three-quarter -sleeve in khaki or denim, worn over layers of color-coordinated T-shirts or a casual button-down shirt and complemented with jeans or a fl owing floral skirt. As the temperatures dip, the silhouette for classic, long jackets is ladylike, with a slight flare out from the waist, such as in belted trench coats shown by everyone from Marc Jacobs to Armani. The femininity of the cinched waist and the flare over the hips, with a bit of swing to the coat as you walk, brings in the understated elegance of the season’ s biggest trends in fashion as a whole. Jene Luciani, a regular style contributor for the “T oday” show, says: “The belted peacoat is one of my top fi ve fall/winter must-haves. The peacoat is a fall classic, but with cinched silhouettes taking over the runway, buying a belted version seems fresh for this year.” The biker jacket trend is wildly popular – in black, brown or bright tones – adding some edge to your look. Choose leather in either unadorned style or one with lots of silver buckles and straps for a detailed coat over a simpler, less adorned dress or outfit. “Cape jackets can also be very warm and, at the same time, look adorable. Tons of tweed patterns, checks and wools made their way in this season, and paired with a dark pair of jeans, these jackets are fun and very flattering,” says celebrity wardrobe stylist Jeni Elizabeth, who has worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, Paris Hilton and other stars.

such as bright orange, blood red and hot pink. Muted jewel tones – such as dark blue, hunter green and deep purple – also lead the fall-winter jacket trends. Patterns are hot for this season, as well. Bold graphic patterns are in, such as color blocks and animal prints, as well as the always-chic Burberry checked patterns in purple and black, red and tan, or brown with oranges, yellows and beiges.

season’s styles and silhouettes work with your fi gure. Many department stores have stylists who will select jacket options from the racks for you and help accessorize them with the perfect boots, heels, jewelry and handbags. When it comes to hot new jackets, such as this one from Burberry, the fit is the top priority.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

For outerwear intended to protect against the cold rather than simply serve as fashion statements, fabrics such as tartan, tweed and sheepskin are in demand, especially in green, gray and brown. Puffy parkas also come in neutrals and brights for fall and winter warmth.

CHOOSING THE SILHOUETTE FOR YOU

Fit is your biggest priority , according to Constance Dunn, style specialist and author of “Practical Glamour.” “A key part of selecting the best cold-weather jacket has to do with understanding which proportions and length will suit you best,” she says. Here are her three top guidelines on strategically selecting the best coat for your figure: • “Consider your physical size, and select from items that scale nicely with your overall frame. A puffy down coat won’ t flatter if you’re on the petite or short side. • “To visually extend your legs, don’ t wear long or oversize jackets. A well-tailored jacket that ends at the top of the hips, paired with a pair of slacks or skirt in the same or a complementary color, is a smart fall solution that lends a long line to the shorter woman. ACCENTS AND COLOR Petite women shouldn’t go longer in length Luciani says: “Whether it be faux or real, than the crotch. you’ve got to have fur in some form. Winter hair care

Want lustrous locks? Ease up on the styling

D

By Chandra Orr N oufal has the perfect recipe for rehydrating dry, brittle hair: Mix 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons of avocado and 1 tablespoon of olive oil to form a smooth paste. Apply the mixture to wet hair, and cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic wrap. Heat the hair for 10 minutes under a blow-dryer, and then let it cool for 10 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as normal. “The mayonnaise, avocado and olive oil have natural oils that are great for dry hair , and the avocado is loaded with vitamins B-6 and E, which increase strength and shine,” Noufal says. To maintain those healthy , hydrated tresses, consider the four cardinal rules of winter hair care: 1. Shampoo less often, and do it correctly. Shampoo is primarily meant to clean the scalp and can damage hair if overused. Remember that the drier your scalp the less often you need to shampoo. When shampooing, wash your scalp to remove oils, and then let the shampoo run through the hair. Follow with a moisturizing conditioner applied to the ends of the hair only, not to the scalp.

ry, brittle, frizzy hair that won’ t hold a style? It’s a common winter woe, but those untamed tresses have more to do with your hair habits than they do with the cold weather.

If you want lustrous locks, lay off the perms and dyes, and put down that flat iron; skip the shampoo for a day or two. “One of the most common misconceptions about hair is that it is alive. In fact, hair is nonliving and does not heal itself once it is injured,” says Dr . Zoe D. Draelos, consulting professor at Duke University School of Medicine and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology . “Women need to understand that the very things that they do to hair to make it beautiful will end up damaging the hair’s structure and ultimately affect its appearance. Once the hair is damaged, it cannot heal itself, except through new growth at the scalp.” You’ve heard it before; the less you do to your hair the better . Over-processing, over-washing over-styling and over -washing are thethe urn that that manageable manageablemane mane quickest ways to turn zy mess. into a tangled, frizzy cals and heat take their their toll, toll, As the chemicals of fat fat on on the the outside outside the protective lipid layer of removed––and andit’it’ss this of the hair cuticle isisremoved that’ss responsible for for protective layer that’ making hair shiny. “Hair looks dry dryand anddamaged damaged when the cuticle on onthe theoutside outsideofo f the shaft isn’ t lyingg flflat,” explains stylist Joey N oufal, fal, founder founder of of N oufal HairColorr Studio. Studio. “This can happen naturally ly with curly curly hair hair or as the result of chemically hemically treated hair or winter dry-weather weather hair.” In addition,, heat heat from from blow-dryers and flat irons can cook the hair, stripping ititofofitsitsnatural natural moisturizers; it’s a condition conditionknown known as “bubble hair.” When water water in in the the hair is heated and dturns turns to to steam, steam, bubbles form in the hehair hairshaft shaftand and undermine the cuticle, cle, which leads to frizzy ends andnd breakage. breakage.

For sleek, healthy hair this winter, wash sparingly and skip the blow-dryer whenever possible.

“Dramatic temperature changes are hard on hair,” Draelos says. “Think of hair like a piece of steak. It starts out nice and soft and flexible, but when you cook it, the steak changes texture and becomes hard. Similarly, hair transforms when exposed to heat over time, resulting in brittle hair.” Add to that frequent shampooing, which robs the scalp of natural oils, and it equals a limp, lackluster look. So what’s a girl to do? Ease up on perms and dyes. Change your styling habits. And add an intense conditioning treatment to your weekly routine. “Hair needs to be hydrated with extra conditioners or a conditioning mask in the winter months so it stays healthy and not dry,” Noufal says.

2. Choose the right shampoo. Swap your summer shampoo and conditioner combo for one with extra moisturizers. T wo-in-one shampoos that clean and condition the hair are also good choices. Look for products that contain dimethicone, which has been shown to reduce static electricity for better shine and manageability. 3. Ease up on the styling products. In the summer, humidity can interfere with the top layer of hair, so you may need more styling gel, texturizing pomade or smoothing cream to get the desired effect, but in the winter , heavy products can weigh down hair , making it less manageable. Instead, opt for a few drops of smoothing serum to help strengthen and protect hair while adding shine and gloss. 4. Protect hair from heat. When possible, skip the blow-dryer and let hair air-dry instead. If you must use a blow-dryer , start on the lowest heat setting fi rst, and then gradually increase the heat to avoid dryness and damage. Opt for curling irons and fl at irons with built-in temperature controls, and use the lowest setting possible to get the desired look. When straightening hair with a ceramic iron, put a damp towel in the device to protect your hair from the direct heat – or swap the flat iron for a large-barrel iron to create huge loose curls. curls.
