Preventing colorectal cancer

A

mong cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second-leading cancer killer (behind lung cancer) in the U.S. But if everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60 percent of these deaths could be avoided. Fortunately, a simple and efficient test—a colonoscopy—can detect colon cancer. Colon cancer usually begins as a small polyp. While most colon polyps are benign, some do become cancerous. Colon cancer symptoms may include a change in bowel habits or bleeding, but usually colon cancer strikes without symptoms and that’s why it’s important to get tested regularly. A colonoscopy enables your doctor to examine the lining of your colon for abnormalities by inserting a flexible tube and advancing it into the rectum and colon. If the doctor sees a polyp—an abnormal growth in the colon lining—he will remove it and send it to the laboratory for analysis. The procedure usually takes no more than 20 minutes. So if you want to reduce your risk of colon cancer: • Be physically active; include at least 30 minutes of exercise or activity in each day’s schedule. • Eat a diet rich in whole grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables. • Avoid fatty foods and excess alcohol. • Know your family’s cancer history. • And, most important, if you are over 50 or have a family history of colon cancer, schedule your screening colonoscopy Colon cancer is preventable, especially when the early warning signs are detected through a routine screening. Bristal Assisted Living Communities offer tips to keep senior citizens cancer-free

F

amily members can help reduce an aging relative’s risk of cancer by encouraging healthy lifestyle changes, according to Winsome Bent, RN, Executive Director of the Bristal Assisted Living Community of North Hills. “About 77 percent of people diagnosed with cancer are 55 or older, but lifestyle changes can benefit the health of senior family members,” says Bent. • Educate seniors about the benefits of exercise. • Increasing physical activity can lower a person’s chances for many cancers, including breast, endometrial, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers. • Encourage seniors to do activities they enjoy and that will keep them active. Gardening, golfing, playing tennis and swimming are all great choices. • Learn about healthy diets for adults older than age 50. • Share information on how many calories they should be getting daily and the types of foods they should be eating. According to Bent, “many seniors, especially those living alone, don’t cook much. A poor diet might keep seniors from getting the nutrients they need to maintain a healthy body and lower their risk of cancer.” • Don’t smoke. “Quitting smoking is the most important thing anyone can do to improve their health. It’s never too late to quit,” says Bent. “Avoiding secondhand smoke can greatly improve a senior’s health. The Bristal Assisted Living Communities have facilities in East Meadow, East Northport, Lynbrook, North Hills, North Woodmere, Westbury, and Massapequa. Hypnosis Can Help!

Treating chronic sinus disease

C

hronic sinusitis is one of the most prevalent illnesses in the United States, affecting as many as 30 million Americans. Chronic sinusitis affects adults and children and can greatly impact quality of life. Acute sinusitis is often due to infections; however chronic sinusitis is often associated with allergic disease, abnormal sinus anatomy or problems with your immune system. Chronic sinusitis presents with facial pain, headaches, congestion, and can cause worsening asthma or cough. Over time untreated sinusitis can cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, loss of smell and taste. If the underlying cause or recurrent sinusitis is not identified, patients are often treated with multiple courses of steroids and antibiotics. Unnecessary treatment can lead to antibiotic resistance and harmful side effects due to recurrent oral steroid use. Identifying the cause for chronic sinus disease is simple and includes a physical exam, allergy testing and evaluation of your immune system. If the cause is due to allergies, medications can be used to prevent allergic symptoms thereby preventing sinus disease. If your sinus disease is due to minor problems in your immune system a vaccine can be used to boost your immunity and decrease the number of sinus infections. Chronic sinusitis is painful, results in missed days from work or school and impacts quality of life. Specialists in the field of Allergy/Immunology can help identify the cause for chronic sinus disease resulting in less sinus infections. Proper diagnosis gives patients back control over their health and improves quality of life.

ore than 184,450 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States today. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital has advanced the fight against this pervasive disease by offering a new cutting edge digital mammography system. “As a gynecologist, we encourage all women over the age of 40 to have an annual mammogram and, in some cases, earlier, where there is a strong family history of breast cancer, said Mohan Mahadkar, M.D., Chairman of Obstetrics/Gynecology at St. John’s. “We are very pleased to offer state-of-the-art digital mammograms, given by excellent and caring technologists, conveniently in our community, he added. This system, a GE Healthcare Senographe Digital Mammography system, provides physicians with clear and precise all-digital images, rather than images on X-ray film. What’s more, the system provides the largest field of view currently available, which can be extremely helpful for precision imaging of patients with diverse shapes and sizes. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. St. John’s offers women and men advanced imaging services, including a state-of-the-art bone density system for diagnosis of ostseoporosis and a new MRI as well. “This new technology will provide both accuracy and increased ease of use for our patients, says Dr. Charles Schwartz, Attending, Imaging Department. “Providing outstanding diagnostic equipment for patients is a vital step to good preventive health, and one we take very seriously. For an appointment for digital mammography at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, please call 1-718-869-7780.

was diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk increases slightly, but it is not in the same risk category as those who have a ďŹ rst degree relative with breast cancer. If you have multiple generations diagnosed with breast cancer on the same side of the family, or if there are several individuals who are ďŹ rst degree relatives to one another, or several family members diagnosed under age 50, the probability increases that there is a breast cancer gene contributing to the cause of this familial history. MYTH: If the gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 is detected in your DNA, you will deďŹ nitely develop breast cancer. FACT: According to the National Cancer Institute, regarding families who are known to carry BRCA1 or BRCA2, “not every woman in such families carries a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, and not every cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes. Furthermore, not every woman who has a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation will develop breast and/or ovarian cancer. But, a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about ďŹ ve times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation.â€? For people who discover they have the harmful mutation, there are various proactive measures that can be done to reduce risk. These include taking a hormonal therapy called Tamoxifen or deciding to take a surgical prevention approach which is to have bilateral prophylactic mastectomies, usually done with reconstruction. Most women will also have ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well since there is no reliable screening test for the early stages of developing ovarian cancer.

Fight the Fight, Find the Cure. In 2013

T

he amount of health-related information at our disposal these days can be overwhelming, especially where breast cancer is concerned. Early diagnosis and cure involves staying aware and being informed – with the correct information. Read on to separate fact from ďŹ ction. MYTH: Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer. FACT: Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam. He or she may possibly order breast imaging studies to determine if this lump is of concern or not. Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, getting an annual clinical breast exam, and scheduling your routine screening mammograms. MYTH: If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer, too. FACT: While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of this disease. If you have a ďŹ rst degree relative with breast cancer: If you have a mother, daughter, or sister who developed breast cancer below the age of 50, you should consider some form of regular diagnostic breast imaging starting 10 years before the age of your relative’s diagnosis. If you have a second degree relative with breast cancer: If you have had a grandmother or aunt who

T

he velocity, power and intensity of women’s sports have considerably amplified over the past decade. Along with the increase in play has come an increase in injury occurrence. One of the more common injuries is a sprain or rupture of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL, of the knee. Female ACL injury (6-10 times more-so than males) occur with many being non-contact injuries (landing or cutting injuries). There is considerable research on prevention for ACL injuries, but the way to really help the most is to eliminate the three main problems that lead to non-contact injuries: ligament dominance, leg dominance, and quad dominance. Ligament dominance is when the athlete relies more on their ligaments vs. their muscles (specifically their hip muscles) to perform athletic tasks like cutting or landing from a jump. Leg dominance is when an athlete relies on one leg more than the other when performing athletic tasks and can be seen if they lean to one side with a squat or a landing. Quad dominance is when the athlete will call on their quadriceps (front of the thigh) muscles before their gluteus maximus (butt/hip) muscles. This is all related to the females’ neuromuscular control or how they coordinate their muscle to control their joints. What can really be improved on is the athletes’ neuromuscular control. This is done by training strength, flexibility, balance/proprioception, and just basic technique training. At Peak Performance Physical Therapy, our certified PTs provide comprehensive individualized physical therapy to improve function and relieve pain. Periodontal disease and systemic health

M

illions of people in the world have periodontal disease, which is a serious infection that if left untreated can lead to tooth loss. The disease starts as gingivitis manifesting as swollen and bleeding gums. If gingivitis is not treated it can advance to periodontitis. In the presence of poor oral hygiene the plaque can spread below the gum line. Toxins produced by bacteria stimulate a chronic inflammatory response which makes the body turn on itself. This causes the tissues and bone that support the teeth to break down and be destroyed. Usually, the symptoms for this destructive process are quite mild. Periodontal bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to the major organs and begin new infections where they can not only affect the teeth but also other areas in the body including the brain, heart, kidney and respiratory system. Treatment is aimed at reducing the bacteria or plaque in the patient’s mouth and thus preventing the harmful effects on various organ systems in the body. We spend an extensive amount of time teaching oral hygiene techniques because excellent oral hygiene is so important. After active treatment, periodontal maintenance is essential to maintain a healthy mouth. Studies have shown that patients with excellent oral hygiene who have their teeth cleaned every three months keep significantly more teeth over time. Please consider periodontal treatment. It can be more than just a nice smile. A healthy mouth can lead to a healthier and longer life.

hen Lauri* discovered a lump in her breast, she took immediate action and scheduled a mammogram. Her doctor informed her that her test was normal and not to be concerned. Instead of alleviating her worry, the test result increased her anxiety. Lauri knew something was wrong, so she chose to seek a second opinion. After hearing about its combination of compassionate customer service, expert breast imaging specialists and advanced medical imaging technologies, she turned to South Nassau Communities Hospital’s (SNCH) Complete Women’s Imaging (CWI), PC. CWI conducted a breast ultrasound, which then led to an MRI and MRI-guided biopsy. These exams revealed that the lump was a ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), the earliest form of breast cancer. The team at CWI and SNCH’s breast cancer specialists developed a targeted treatment plan for Lauri and provided her with assurance and encouragement both before and after the treatment. Today, Lauri is doing well and would agree that it comes as no surprise that CWI’s patient satisfaction rating is nearly 100 percent and sets the standard for patient-centered imaging services. Designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and accredited in mammography, ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and stereotactic biopsy by the American College of Radiology, CWI is home to premier breast imaging specialists Dr. Abraham Port, Dr. George Autz, Dr. Michael Golia and Dr. Michelle Listhaus. They use the latest advancements in diagnostic imaging technologies to detect breast cancer and other potentially harmful breast abnormalities in their earliest stages. With 20 years behind her as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Terry Biener, CCH, believes that the key to successful results is knowing what to say, how to say it, and which techniques to apply once a person is hypnotized. This wisdom can only come from extensive training and experience. “`Everyone processes information differently,” said Biener. “There are reasons why a habit or fear has formed, which should be examined before effective treatment can take place.” A thorough intake session is done first. The number of hypnosis sessions recommended varies. Hypnosis sessions are tailored to the person’s triggers and habits. Motivation and willingness to work with suggestions on a conscious level are important. Trust and rapport with the hypnotist is vital too. Biener has recently added Computerized Client-Based Weight Loss to her repertoire. A sophisticated computer program is used to pinpoint personality, mental processing, strengths and weaknesses. Combined with data gathered from the client, she custom designs hypnosis sessions to zero in on imprints that need to be changed. Weight loss workshops, which include group hypnosis, will be offered in the future. Biener’s true passion is helping people with fears and panic. Having experienced phobias and panic attacks herself, which were ultimately healed through hypnosis, her understanding and empathy is profound. By combining Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques with hypnosis, she can eliminate or reduce unwanted and sometimes devastating anxiety. “People should realize they aren’t alone. Phobias can seem irrational since they come from the subconscious –the part of the mind that responds without logic. Most people who have never experienced a phobia simply don’t understand.” Understanding how hypnosis works before trying it is advised. “Ignore what you’ve seen in movies or on stage. A hypnotic trance is actually a natural state we visit frequently; when we’re engrossed a movie, or if we daydream while driving and don’t remember passing certain streets of exits. A hypnotist induces a trance to “reframe” the subconscious part of the mind. A good subject is strong-willed and intelligent. The person being hypnotized never loses control.” Hypnosis can help with trauma, sports, procrastination, self-esteem, stress, anxiety and most habits. As a former New York City schoolteacher, Biener is comfortable working with children. She holds numerous certifications though the American Board of Hypnotherapy and the National Guild of Hypnotists. She has done speaking engagements and group hypnosis sessions for organizations and wellness centers. Clients are seen by appointment only. Phone consultations are free of charge and confidential. Easy Changes Hypnosis is located in Valley Stream. Contact Terry Biener, CCH, at 516-7916174 or visit www.easychanges.com. There are many changes that one can make to decrease their risk factors and increase their overall health. Diet and exercise have been shown to play a large role in aiding prevention and treatment of cancer. Studies have shown that a healthy diet, exercise routine and maintaining a healthy weight can cut ones risk factor for breast cancer by as much as 38 percent. While there is no one super food that will protect you, a largely ‘plant based’ diet, focusing on antioxidantrich foods like berries, dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, etc.), broccoli, garlic, nuts, whole grains and healthy seeds (flax, chia, etc.) can help your body prevent, fight and recover from cancer. Healthy diet and regular exercise along with proper preventative medical care will ensure that you are doing your part to stay one step ahead in the fight against cancer. Dr. Bo Rosenblat is a board-certified medical doctor with office locations in Hewlett and Manhasset. For more information about Dr. Bo’s Diet, call 516-284-8248.

magine twisting, turning, hip swinging, rocking and rolling — all without any effort on your part. And all to benefit your health and well being. Well, that’s what it’s like getting on the new state-of-theart SpineForce. Designed by European physicians and therapists, SpineForce is a three-dimensional rehabilitation exercise machine. “It’s an advanced, multi-featured physical rehabilitation machine,” said Dr. Jeffrey Wechsler, who works out of ROK Health & Fitness in East Rockaway. “It’s the first one in a gym in the country.” According to Wechsler, the machine provides strength training as well as passive-motion training. “It can be used for all kinds of sports, as well as rehab for surgery and stroke victims. It has different kind of protocols: rehab, sports, tennis, golf, settings for moving men, heavy lifters — what muscles you may use for that particular activity.” Wechsler said that he had a patient who couldn’t even lift his arms over his head. “We had him on the machine to stretch his shoulder muscles, and now he can work out like everyone else.” Often overlooked in most workouts, spinal musculature is one of the body’s most important muscle groups. The high technical value of the SpineForce rehab is its capability to provide feedback on your body’s performance and how you are progressing. Capable of existing as a virtual trainer, SpineForce can be used to do simple warm-up exercise or for intense muscle strengthening and conditioning.
