WOMEN’S HEALTH SottoPelle® answers your questions.

What does SottoPelle® offer? SottoPelle® offers a scientific method of natural bioidentical hormone therapy that cannot be achieved with mass-produced synthetics. SottoPelle® pioneered an innovative web-based BioCalc® system that provides each patient with a precisely dosed hormone pellet based on their individual needs and slipped under the skin for the maximum effectiveness. The SottoPelle® method eliminates the risks associated with most synthetic hormones. While often imitated but never duplicated, SottoPelle® remains the leader in pellet hormone therapy with its groundbreaking science and proprietary method that puts patients and their health first above everything else. Why would patients come to SottoPelle® over other places that offer similar treatments? Since 1992, Sottopelle has been the only precision-based hormone therapy with an individualized approach. Most doctors prescribe hormones in tablets, patches, creams, gels or generic pellets. Unlike other methods, SottoPelle® is based on science and works with the body in a way the body recognizes. Other doctors who do pellet therapy do not use this proprietary system and give patients a one-size-fits-all generic dose of hormone that is less effective and can trigger unwanted side effects. Such imprecision may sometimes provide short-term relief of symptoms but does nothing to achieve the level of hormonal balance. The SottoPelle® method delivers on the long-term benefits everyone needs for healthy aging and to prevent disease.

Mom’s Deserve the Best! You spend so much time taking care of others, now it’s your time.

H AND SURGEON MICH AEL FITZMAUR ICE, MD Founder of the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute Double Board CertiďŹ ed Hand Surgeon

Dr. Fitzmaurice has performed thousands of minimally-invasive, endoscopic hand procedures in Arizona over the last decade.

Developed by board certified hand surgeon Michael Fitzmaurice, M.D., and available exclusively at the Fitzmaurice Hand Institute in Phoenix, Endotech uses a small incision and endoscope to repair the injured tendons.

You never appreciate how important the thumb is to regular activities until a tendon injury compromises movement. Repetitive motion from everyday activities such as typing on a laptop or playing a favorite sport, can lead to swelling and inflammation of the tendon sheath, the condition known as De Quervains Tendinitis. This causes pain and limited mobility of the wrist and thumb.

Most patients experience immediate relief and improved movement immediately following the procedure, and can return to work in as little as one week!

De Quervains Tendinitis can now be treated by the state of the art, minimally invasive EndoTech Endoscopic De Quervains Release System.

WHEN LAW MEETS BALL Meet game changer, Dana Hooper BY KELLY POTTS PHOTOS BY MARK MORGAN

Finding a niche in the worlds of sports and law is a tough thing to do – yet that is exactly what local attorney Dana Hooper has managed to accomplish. continued… MAY 2016 |

Hooper, an attorney at Greenberg Traurig LLP (www.gtlaw.com), is the only female professional agent and attorney in the Valley. Her love for athletics stemmed from being around sports from a young age as her dad, Barry Ringel, was the longtime media relations director for the Phoenix Suns. “In my youth, I worked with the Suns before statistics were taken on computers and I would literally sit underneath the basket and track for rebounds, assists and other stats,” Hooper says. “I also would interview players after the game for quotes and putting together media packages and so forth for the NBA.”

Before getting into the legal side of sports, Hooper used the skills she learned from watching her father to become a sports reporter at the Arizona Republic. Her reporter days served as accidental preparation for her current legal career. “I was able to learn how to do questions and answers on the fly and prepare questions for trials, depositions – all from a litigation perspective,” Hooper explains. “It was also good preparation to help me feel comfortable around pro athletes and other people in the public eye – asking them questions, gaining their confidence and welcoming them in as clients as well.” Hooper received her law degree UPTOWN |

from Arizona State University, and worked in their athletic department while she was studying there. The time she spent in the department helped her get a further understanding of the rules and regulations of NCAA compliance-related issues. As if having a sports reporting career and being surrounded by the athletics world as a child wasn’t enough to lay the foundation for a successful sports legal career, Hooper is also a former soccer star in her own right. While attending University of California, Berkeley, Hooper played soccer, building her skills and knowledge of the sports world. To this day, Hooper is still playing recreational soccer on local leagues. Hooper says she imagined her law degree and sports background would be a solid foundation to become an athletic director at a university, but decided to go into private practice law first. After years of planting seeds, networking and developing her legal skills, Hooper was eventually able to blend the law with sports and develop her sports law practice clientele, beginning with women’s sports, specifically soccer. “I was playing in a soccer tourney a few years ago with a player from England who needed help with her contracts. She knew I was an attorney and asked for help on some matters and from there I represented her and continued to represent her teammates, which spun into representing many female soccer players throughout the world as their attorney and agent,” Hooper says. “I also represent athletes in litigation and other dealings – male athletes and sports oriented businesses. There is really a gamut there that enriches and continues to build my sports practice.” When not on the field or working, Hooper is spending time with her husband and two daughters. “One of my favorite spots actually is my eight-year-old daughter’s elementary school,” she explains. “I like stepping onto that campus and looking around and seeing everybody so happy, enjoying life and just seeing my child learn and grow as a human being.”

COMMUNITY WILL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS Local bank’s rising star BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

T

he highest ranking female at Washington Federal in the Valley, Paris Davis, serves as the bank’s vice president and northwest Arizona retail banking division manager. Davis, who has been in banking for more than 30 years was key in Washington Federal’s 2014 acquisition of 23 Bank of America branches. But, she had another huge event in her life that year when she came down with what she thought was an earache. “It got so bad, after a few weeks I finally relented and visited a doctor,” says Davis. “At the time, I was just elected cochair our annual United Way campaign, and we were working toward a massive national technology conversion.” But, it wasn’t an infection – it was thyroid cancer. Not that it slowed her down; Davis continued to helm the United Way campaign, albeit sometimes from a doctor’s office. The result: A cancer-free Davis whose team raised a record $515,000plus for United Way, and completed the conversion on schedule. Davis also got her certification with Take Charge America to teach financial literacy.

Etc.

Did you always want to go into banking? As a child, I wanted to be a singing basketball player since, you know, that’s clearly a job. Beyond United Way, how do you help your team to get community involved? I help spearhead our Washington Federal Focus on Arizona community outreach program, which donates hundreds of hours and raises thousands of dollars for organizations statewide, including our hugely successful “Save at School” program, where we visit local schools and help kids as young as kindergarteners to open their first savings accounts and to understand the value of a dollar. MEET THE GENTS Local faces of luxury BY KELLY POTTS PHOTO BY MARK MORGAN

W

ith over a decade of real estate experience, Raul Siqueiros and Jack Luciano, otherwise known as “The Gents” of Walt Danley Christie’s International Real Estate (www.waltdanley.com), are changing the way people buy and sell their luxury properties. “Everything we do is different – We have shunned the traditional brokerage model of ruthless agents competing against each other,” Siqueiros says. “Jack and I, with our mentor and founder Walt Danley, believe in a culture of partnership in which all clients are represented in a synergistic environment.” The Gents have found success marketing their properties through social media, technology and networking with brokers in local markets and around the globe, making the way they connect buyers and sellers unique. “I think the fact that we aren’t as formal as others, and our path to marketing our properties offers a robust approach of new and traditional methods makes our service unequalled,” Luciano explains. When selling to a new client, Siqueiros and Luciano extend themselves far beyond the conventional methods. “We envision ourselves as lifestyle agents committed to informing, interpreting and connecting global clientele with luxury homes,” Siqueiros says.

Etc.

If you weren’t a realtor, what would you be doing? Luciano: Probably something in architecture. I just love this field and couldn’t imagine not doing something in it. Siqueiros: I always wanted to be a fireman. My passion for helping others has always been a constant and is now reflected in who I am as a realtor. What is your favorite part of being in the Uptown area? Siqueiros: The People! The sense of community, its truly a special place, one that is difficult find in a large city setting.

A

imee Josette was born into the fashion world – at just age two, she played dress up with her grandmother’s accessories, and that love of fashion led her to persue a career at Neiman Marcus as the CUSP sales manager. Josette is responsible for an array of things such as staying in communication with the buying team, merchandising the floor, assisting the CUSP stylists and staying up to date with all of the trends. “I love that I get to interact with people and build relationships on daily basis, all while being able to share my passion for this industry,” she says. Josette describes her style as “Free spirited sophistication,” gravitating toward feminine styles that are comfortable and she often puts together ensembles inspired by the ‘70s. Some of her favorite brands are Alexis, Self-Portrait, Frame Denim, and Aquazzura. She typically finds her pieces at Neiman Marcus CUSP, but she also enjoys stopping by the Valley's local boutiques and surfing the online contemporary luxury market. Working in the fashion industry allows her to exercise her creativity daily. “One day I might be in a flowing maxi dress with a leather jacket thrown over it and the next day a pair of high wasted flared denim with a silk tie neck blouse,” Josette explains. Though whatever she chooses, whether it is dressy or casual, she stays true to her sense of style.

etween preparing for the Summer Olympics, working as a personal trainer and modeling, one would think that wouldn’t leave much time for fashion – but that’s not not the case for Melvin Echard. Echard spends most of his time in athletic clothes while he is training or working, gravitating toward Lululemon or Nike, but he also likes H&M, Express, Bar III and Levi’s for his “off the track” laid back looks. From henley T-shirts paired with fedoras and a pair of Toms, to fitted button-downs with slim-fit pants, Echard’s style is simply fluid and ever-evolving. The personal trainer at Freedom Fitness has always counted health and fitness a constant in his life as an athlete. Although his big sister was the track star in the family, he quickly followed in her footsteps through high school and college, where he first dreamt of being an Olympian. Now he has his sights set on winning big on the track in Rio de Janeiro this summer. “It has been quite a journey!” he says. “A lot of blood, sweat, tears and a healthy dose of sacrifice, but it has been so worth it!”

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love spending time with family! My wife and 3-year-old are dynamic and keep me occupied. When I’m not on the track or personal training I like a cup of Joe and a good read. I frequent many coffee shops in the area. What do you love about the modeling world and fashion industry? I love how diverse it can be. That beauty can be defined and captured in so many ways. I also like the harshness of it, believe it or not. You have to have a thick skin in the industry, and know (and learn) how to be confident in your own skin. You can only be you! UPTOWN |

Making a difference in performing arts, fashion and philanthropy

A

s a woman about town, Billie Jo Herberger certainly doesn’t have a lot of time on her hands. The philanthropist and full-time supporter of the Herberger Theater in downtown Phoenix is a staple of the performing arts community across the Valley. “I am involved with several things including The Phoenix Theater, Valley Youth Theater, Arizona Opera, Phoenix Art Musuem, Kids Read USA, just to name a few,” Herberger says. Herberger and her husband, Judd Herberger, spend a lot of their time supporting local arts, especially the Herberger Theater (www.herbergertheater.org). The Theater is 25 years old and opened just as the downtown area was beginning its revitalization. Herberger makes it her mission to create awareness and continue to show her dedication for the theater, any way she can. “I love to support the theater and I am so proud of what goes on there,” she explains. “While I am not involved in the daily business of the theater, I support the productions and all that happens there. I honesty support all of the performing arts in the Valley, but because of the name of the Herberger, it does hold a little bit more magic for me.” The Theater is not just a place where shows and arts happen, it is a center of activity where performing arts come to life. “The impact it has had on the community is amazing, it has brought so many people downtown,” she says. “It has made a statement. The beautiful sculptures out front, a fanciful place for people to visit, it is a highlight of downtown and I think it is fabulous for people to have a place to go, attend an event and to get so excited about it when they are there.” However, involvement in the Theater is not the only thing that drives Herberger daily. She also has her hands in a number of other baskets, supporting many additional local philanthropies.

“I am involved with the Heart Ball, Release the Fear, Kids Read and so many other projects,” she explains. Herberger keeps her days busy with activities that are both empowering and fulfilling. On a typical day, you can find her attending meetings and luncheons, planning events with friends and fellow board members, reading to children through organizations, or speaking to boards – you name it and Herberger is either doing it or has done it. In the evenings, she and her husband also keep a very active social calendar. The pair attends numerous events around the Valley, going to, of course, theater performances, the opera, fundraisers and many other social gatherings. MAY 2016 |

“Life is fun and good,” she explains. “We are at a time in our lives where we can do these things. My husband loves and supports everything that I enjoy doing. He isn’t not the type of person that you have to beg to attend these activities, you just give him his dance card every week, and he is there.” If you have ever seen Herberger around town or at any social events, one thing you know for sure is that she is always dressed to impress. She is typically styled in unique fashions, sure to be the standout out in a crowd, and she wouldn’t want it any other way. “I never ever pressure myself to look perfect,” she says. “I just want to be effortlessly cool. I want to be my most

beautiful self, every day. I think of myself as a glamourous surfer girl, I like to be unique and I like to be creative.” Although Herberger typically strays away from some of the more conventional fashion choices, gravitating toward Japanese-styles due to the 12 years she spent doing business in Japan, she also appreciates the classic go-to styles that many women sport at the black-tie functions. She says she believes that everyone looks amazing in their own personal style. And, it’s all about being yourself no matter what your style is. “I tend to gravitate toward colors and patterns, mixing up stuff and styles,” she explains. “I’m not a jeans and traditional styles girl. I like lots of color and I like things that flow and feel graceful. I like to be that unique girl.” The Herbergers are certainly a couple with a lot to share with family and friends. Although you might see them out on the town most nights, they also enjoy celebrating and hosting parties at their own home as well. The pair will often host performing arts events, fundraisers

and other parties at their home. This month, the they will be celebrating and hosting the changing of the guard at the Herberger Theater. The current president of the Theater, Dick Bowers, is retiring after an accomplished 15 years in the position and the Herbergers will be hosting a party in his honor at the end of the month. Current CEO of the Theater, Mark Mettes, will be stepping into the role of president. When Herberger, who majored in health and physical education in college, isn’t out and about, you’ll find her taking time for her health. Herberger made a name for herself years back with a water aerobics system she developed and authored books about called Wet and Wonderful Water Exercise, and she still finds it important to focus on her mind and body today. “I’ve learned that it is important to stay healthy and keep your body and mind in check,” she says. Even though she isn’t teaching fitness and health anymore, that doesn’t mean it isn’t something that is a priority MAY 2016 |

for her today. “Everything about my past life is a part of my present life,” she explains. “Sometimes I will go out on my terrace at our home and spend 20 minutes doing tai chi, looking out across the Valley at the city and the mountains. It was something that I would do back then, and it is something that I find important to do today. You don’t forget these things, they stay with you and if they are important enough, you don’t put them aside.” Herberger says it really is all about doing what she can for the community, not just the performing arts community but the Valley as a whole. While the Herbergers do spend time traveling during the summers to their boat in California and other tourist destinations in Europe, they are always excited to come back home in the fall and participate in the social event season in the Valley. “Life is really good here and we really love it, we are always really excited to come home and get things moving forward with all of our friends,” she says.

NICOLE STANTON

Founder and chair, Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention

A

s office managing partner of Quarles & Brady LLP and Quarles’ assistant general counsel, Nicole Stanton is naturally a very justice-driven person, so when she saw her late brother Dion France being bullied relentlessly as a child, she knew something had to be done. In 2012, Stanton launched Stop Bullying AZ. The organization sponsored an anti-bullying summit at Arizona State University that year, providing school administrators and teachers with information and strategies to help stop bullying in schools. After receiving tremendous support, Stop Bullying AZ was renamed the Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention (www.dioninitiative. org) and is now located within ASU as a research and resource program. Tell us about the Dion Initiative. We are committed to promoting environments that foster the health, well-being and academic success of children. To accomplish this, the Dion Initiative brings together renowned educators, dedicated direct-service providers and innovators to create a greater understanding of the obstacles children face and to develop and share evidenced-based and easily replicable programs that overcome those obstacles. Multiple projects comprise the Dion Initiative, including providing training for educators to improve school climate, improving the health and well-being of our community’s most at-risk children, and making cyberspace safer.

You are involved in the LGBTQ community. Why is this cause so significant to you? I believe in equality. My brother was gay, and I personally witnessed the hate and violence that was directed at him because of his sexual orientation. I want to prevent that from happening to others and assist others who have been similarly mistreated. My brother and his memory are always with me and fueled me to found this organization as well as speak up for the LGBTQ community, especially the youth within it, in any way that I can. How do you balance your community work with your family? I try to dispel the notion for other women that there is such a thing as balance. If it exists, it is an elusive creature. My life is MAY 2016 |

often very out of balance. From week to week I have to make difficult decisions about the priorities in my life. On the community front, I have started more and more to try to involve my children in my activities. My children are my priority and everything else has to take a backseat. What would you like to be remembered for? For being the type of leader that creates more leaders, not more followers. How do you plan on teaching your children philanthropy? I think the best way to teach my children how to give back is to teach by example. As they get older, they will get to experience more and more of our family's commitment to the community. It is something that will be unquestionably second nature to them.

SUNNY WIGHT

Founder and executive director, Mindfulness First

A

fter suffering a stress-induced breakdown, Sunny Wight created the nonprofit Mindfulness First (www.mindfulnessfirst.org). Since then, through mindfulness practices, Wight has healed herself and made it her mission to share these healing practices with others. Mindfulness First educates and empowers through mindfulness-based life skills that increase awareness, resilience, kindness, connection and creativity. The organization is creating Arizona’s first Mindful School at Phoenix’s Crockett Elementary School, and there is a community center in Scottsdale where anyone can learn mindfulness. Ultimately, Wight is committed to creating a more peaceful world. Why is this cause important? I believe that mindfulness is the cause to end all causes. If we could teach our children how to manage their emotions and impulses, then we are just a generation away from a more compassionate and peaceful world. Through mindfulness, people can have a shared knowledge of the human experience. It is my firm belief, that once we all learn how to manage our bodies through mindfulness, we would have a very different society. What would you like people to know about Mindfulness First? Mindfulness First is for all people whatever their age. The life skills we teach are based on universal biological and neurological facts. And so, simply by default of being a human, mindfulness lessons

can transform your life. We all have an automatic stress reaction that kicks in no matter the source of stress. When we experience the stress reaction time after time throughout our daily activities, then we are never resting and healing our body. Through mindfulness, we can take control of this automatic reaction, and begin to take care of our body and mind. Mindfulness First wants to create a healthy Arizona by giving people their “user manual” (a phrase we often use to describe mindfulness lessons). Have you always been involved in the community? No. Before my breakdown I rarely volunteered; I was so caught up in my own life for the wrong reasons. After my personal transformation I began honoring my true self instead UPTOWN |

of trying to conform to who I thought I should be, and that gave me a great capacity and desire to give back not only to my family but to my community in a tremendous and impactful way. What has been your greatest success? My greatest success story is my children. I couldn’t be more enamored with the way their independent minds work and how they know who they are at ages 10 and 12. Both are already following the dreams that they have for themselves, and I could not be more proud. How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? It’s a part of their everyday life; they are both very involved in what I do. I hope that it is clear to them that helping others is a part of living a rewarding life.

GENEVRA RICHARDSON

Board of Trustees Chair, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Arizona Chapter

G

enevra Richardson is the owner of GovGroup (www.govgroup.com), a company specializing in contract lobbying. Her job is to work with people from both sides of the aisle to find solutions. This idea of solving problems also segues into her philanthropic life as she serves as the chair of the Board of Trustees for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Arizona Chapter – with the mission to raise money to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Richardson has been involved with LLS (www.lls. org) for 11 years and joined the board six years ago, currently in her second year as chair. She has since helped grow the board to a very active group of 18 members who are making great strides for LLS. What inspired you to get involved with LLS? I am so passionate about LLS. It’s where I want to spend my time because I have so many personal connections that have been impacted by blood cancers. My high school friend, Cameron Clay, was diagnosed with leukemia right after we graduated. And my husband lost his older brother, Mark, to leukemia when he was just a toddler. What new things are in store for LLS this year? We have our two biggest campaigns coming up this year that are like no other in the community. Our fourth annual Man and Woman of the

Year campaign is a 10-week fundraising campaign, and we are in the middle of the campaign right now. We have 17 fabulous candidates running for the title, and our finale is on June 11 at Talking Stick Resort. Our Light the Night Walk is in the fall and it honors survivors, those who have passed and their families. It will be Nov. 5 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Have you always been involved in the community? Our close friends, Katie and Mark Cosmas, lost their daughter, Taylor, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and founded an organization called Three Butterflies. Each year they have a 5K race in Arcadia called Team Taylor. This is where I donate my extra time and resources – to their race to benefit research for SIDS. I am MAY 2016 |

passionate about getting involved in all of the local foundations that directly impact our local communities. I’ve always said to my friends, if the organization is important to you, then it’s important to me. What has been your greatest success? My greatest success has been my family – my husband Jeff and having my children, Beau and Reese. I think every mother probably says that, but I am so proud of my kids. They put everything into perspective. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? It’s always important to give back. It’s so rewarding, and we are so lucky to have health and family. Imagine if we were all involved in some way what a better world this would be!

DIANA DIAZ-HARRISON

Founder and executive director, Arizona Autism Charter Schools, Inc.

A

fter Diana Diaz-Harrison’s son, Sammy, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 1/2, Harrison immersed herself in every parent training program she could find. But, when Sammy got to be school-age, Diaz-Harrison found that it was a struggle to find a public school program that would meet his needs. That is when she took to matters into her own hands. After years of research and banding together with others who shared her vision, she founded a nonprofit in 2012 with the sole purpose of starting a charter school focused on the learning needs of children with autism – and the first location of the Arizona Autism Charter School (AZACS; www.autismcharter.org) opened in 2014. Tell us about AZACS. AZACS is Arizona’s first tuition-free public charter school focused on children with autism. We use Applied Behavior Analysis strategies to help children overcome behavior and communication deficits associated with autism. We opened our school in 2014, serving 90 students in grades K-5. We’re currently in our second year of operation, and we’re getting ready to open a second campus next fall to serve middle school students. Why do you do what you do? I do what I do because there is a shortage of quality school choices for children with autism. There are very few schools using evidence-based strategies delivered by highly trained teachers and staff. It is such a relief for parents to know their

children are in a school that understands their needs and has the programs to move them forward in their skills. Seeing the children make progress is the most rewarding thing in the world. Why is this cause so important? One in 64 Arizona children are living with autism. If left untreated, children can have lifelong difficulties communicating and participating in the social world. I believe that with the proper therapies and education, children with autism can participate with their families and communities and become productive citizens. What would you like to be remembered for? I’d like to be remembered for being a great mom and for making a difference for families living with autism in honor of my son. UPTOWN |

42

| MAY 2016

How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? Giving back and being a part of the solution is our lifestyle. When I struggled to find the educational resources I needed for my son, we decided to build something to benefit him and other children. Building our school has been a family affair that will give back to our community for many years to come. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? We are all faced with adversity at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a child with a diagnosis, a sick parent or the loss of something near and dear to our heart. Instead of giving up in these situations, it is much more empowering to take that life experience to help others.

LISA STROHMAN Founder and director, Technology Wellness Center

A

few years ago, psychologist Lisa Strohman began to notice that her clients were experiencing interpersonal conflict related to the increasing use of social media and exposure to technology. As a result, they were losing touch with living in the present, so she started the Technology Wellness Center (www.technologywellnesscenter.com) to address the issues that children and families face in regards to 24/7 online access. The organization offers parents guidance, support and resources to help manage technology-related issues. Strohman’s goal is to create awareness regarding the prevalence of technology in children’s lives – and provide tools for parenting during a digital age. Why do you do what you do? I am motivated to continue to dedicate my time, resources and heart to an issue that I see impacting so many people every day. I am naturally an empathic person – I can feel that the nature of people and how they connect is deteriorating. I do a lot of work with schools and organizations bringing awareness to this issue and I work with kids and parents. Making a difference, even one person at a time, makes all of the work that I do worthwhile. Why is this cause so important? Technology wellness, with a focus on the positive aspects that technology can provide when it is used with balance, structure and understanding, is so important to learn. Parents need to recognize that

children can succumb to the addictive programming that gaming platforms and social media create, which prey upon our need for acceptance and love. What would you like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered as someone that passionately and soulfully cared about children and our community. That I did everything I could to help families keep their kids safe and to better understand the importance of developing interpersonal skills away from a screen or device. Would you share a favorite memory about one of your children? One of my favorite moments was when my very smart and witty daughter reminded me of what is really important. One day I was racing to send an email that I was certain MAY 2016 |

was late, and she was trying to show me something she had learned at school. I asked her to wait until I was done, but she would not give up. Finally, she said, “Mom, is that email more important than me?” Hearing her words was a great reminder of the lessons I try to teach – it warmed my heart to hear this. How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? We try to instill in our children the importance of getting involved in community events that provide opportunities to give to others. We encourage them to each pick one cause where they can donate their time or participate in some way, and then we also pick an organization or event to adopt as a family. We want our kids to learn empathy and compassion.

STACEY BECK Founder, PITCH 4 KIDZ

M

aking a difference in the lives of children affected by substance abuse led Stacey Beck, the wife of former MLB pitcher Rod Beck, to create PITCH 4 KIDZ (www.pitch4kidz.org). After her family’s own experience losing Rod to addiction, Beck saw an opportunity to help children navigate the emotional impact of living with a parent battling substance abuse. Thus, PITCH 4 KIDZ was born. The organization seeks to give children a voice in recovery while providing tools to make positive choices, learn effective communication, build self-esteem and have healthy emotional expression. What inspired you to start PITCH 4 KIDZ? It was a way to fulfill a promise to my daughters after the loss of their father. They attended a children’s program in California when their dad was in treatment, where they acquired skills to help them navigate the rollercoaster ride that is addiction. There was no program like it in Arizona, so on the third anniversary of Rod’s death, we launched PITCH 4 KIDZ. What would you like people to know about PITCH 4 KIDZ? PITCH offers fun, developmentally appropriate programs that provide children with education and various forms of emotional expression. They learn a language in which to communicate their experiences and understand that they are not responsible for their parent’s disease. This is a critical message for children in building self-esteem and coping strategies.

Why is this cause so important? The children in our community affected by family addiction are often overlooked, unseen and lack access to positive resources. As a community we do not talk honestly about this topic. Pervasive stigma and judgment results in families keeping secrets and children struggling alone. True prevention is available, but not valued and not well funded. Have you always been involved in the community? I was raised that it is my responsibility to do something to repair the world. This has manifested in several ways for me. I began working with Rod and the San Francisco Giants over 30 years ago to help those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. We created the annual event, Until There’s a Cure Day, which UPTOWN |

44

| MAY 2016

was the first time a professional sports team addressed such a stigmatized issue. During his years in the MLB we continued to raise money and awareness. What has been your greatest success? Raising two incredibly good people. Every day I see Rod’s spirit in my daughters. Their kindness and perseverance are extraordinary. They have overcome great challenges and through all of it they are able to advocate for others. They understand the importance of giving to their community and have an unwavering dedication to friends and family. What would you like to be remembered for? That I, very imperfectly, tried to make a small part of the world a little better and that I loved my family with every ounce of my being.

CHRISIE FUNARI

President and founder, Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children

A

fter the loss of her daughter, Ava, to cancer, Chrisie Funari felt called to help other families who were experiencing the same agony she and her family did during Ava’s fight for her life. When Ava was diagnosed, Funari traveled throughout the country seeking the best treatment for her daughter so she understood firsthand the struggles faced by families of children with cancer. With that deep understanding, Funari began the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (www.azcancerfoundation.org) with a mission to offer unique programs that help facilitate travel – regardless of financial situation – to children with cancer and their families. While Funari’s ultimate goal is to end pediatric cancer, she is equally committed to giving children and their caregivers greater peace of mind. Why do you do what you do? I want to offer families no regrets. When Ava was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of pediatric cancer, the survival rate was 40 percent. I knew we only had one shot at beating the disease. We traveled extensively throughout the United States seeking the best treatments. I had done everything in my power to save Ava’s life by leaving no stone unturned. I want to offer families a similar opportunity: To leave no stone unturned and no regrets. The foundation assists with travel expenses so families can get the best treatment for their child.

Why is this cause so important to you? Giving a voice to children with cancer is my life. After enduring the heart-wrenching loss of my daughter, this line of work is the only thing I know. I have to do it, and this role is a true honor and privilege. What would you like to be remembered for? Ava’s legacy. My dedication and commitment to children with cancer comes from my love for her. Ava and my two other children, Eli and Eve, are the driving force behind everything I do. How do you plan on teaching your children about philanthropy? My family is very involved with the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children. Ava’s Angels, one of our donor MAY 2016 |

programs, was created by Eli Holder, Eve Funari, and Oliver and Emma Mackay in memory of Ava Holder. Eli and Eve lost their sister and Oliver and Emma lost their best friend, Ava, to cancer. The children are inspired to keep Ava’s spirit alive while helping children with cancer in our community. Why do you think it is important for everyone to give back in some way? Life is short, and we are all in this world together. We all have a story or experience that has affected us, and giving back allows you to connect with the community or continue the legacy of a lost loved one. Donating your time, expertise or money is an amazing opportunity, a fulfilling experience and a great help for the cause you support.

DINE AROUND TOWN How to eat your way through Arizona Restaurant Week like a pro BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

T

he most edible time of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, is making its return Friday, May 20 through Monday, May 29, sending diners on a 10-day tasting tour of the state. But with more than 100 participating restaurants including The Keg, Flemings, Fogo de Chao, Firebirds and more each offering taste bud tickling prix fix menus daily, how does one even begin to fork – er, forge – ahead? Allow us to help!

Pick a Prix Fix that Fits

Each restaurant offers a prix fix menu – usually three-to-four courses with multiple traditional, vegetarian and even gluten-free options – but there are two price points: $33 or $44

If looking for a great $33 option, try Bink’s Midtown. Since James Beard darling Kevin Binkley will be closing the venue in this incarnation over the summer as he re-imagines the space for re-launch in the fall, this will be Bink’s Midtown’s – as we know it today – last Restaurant Week menu. And they are going out with a bang, offering fried about a dozen courses and amuses you will never forget. If looking at a $44 option, consider venturing up to Binkley’s, for the same reason. In June, Binkley’s will also close its doors, so this is one of your last chances to try the iconic hot spot. Just some of the creative cuisine Binkley has up his sleeve (no doubt, with other surprises planned): fried okra with ranch foam, teriyaki eggplant with pickled Fresno chili, apricot bomb with anise oil and slow- cooked whey fed pork. Now, if wanting to stay closer to central Phoenix or downtown area, Stockyards also has a $44 offering that includes tenderloin chili, seafood gratin, amazing cuts of beef and a life-changing pecan pie.

pairing with their menus as part of the $33 or $44 price point. Simply look for a drink icon next to each posted online menu to see who is offering what.

Take Note of Newbies After more a decade, every restaurant that is going to be a part of the event already signed on years ago, right? Wrong! Each year, at least a dozen venues sign on for their inaugural chance at wowing the Valley. This year, there are several newbies of note to consider, including La Bocca Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar in Phoenix. The cozy wine bar that brings together everyone’s all-time favorite Mediterranean and Italian ingredients will be offering everything from freshly made pastas and creamy hummus to savory seasonal bruschetta and made-fromscratch pizzas. Restaurants fill up quickly, so reservations are recommended. For all the dining details, visit www.arizonarestaurantweek.com.

dental breakthrough can now correct receding gums without painful cutting and stitches – or the need to take time off work for recovery. Experts say the newly developed pinhole gum rejuvenation is quick, painless and can be done in the time it takes to eat lunch. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang of Scottsdale's SC Dentistry is now offering the instant transformation of the defective gum line which will enable thousands of people achieve a healthy and beautiful smile immediately, virtually pain free and with no stitches and no downtime. Gum recession is the loss of gum tissue along the gum line. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease, the natural aging process or bad teeth brushing habits. When gum recession occurs the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed, meaning tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gum line and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness. Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation is done by Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang numbing the gum tissue with a local anesthetic. Then a tiny entry point the size of a ballpoint pen tip is made above or below the teeth

being treated. Then, Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang passes specialized instruments carefully under the gum tissue to reposition it to cover the recessed area. Dr. Erik Svans and Dr. Steven C. Chang will then pass tiny collagen strips through the opening and insert them under the gum. The strips keep the tissue in place until the patients body produces new collagen to fix the receding gums. The procedure takes about an hour to an hour and a half depending on how many teeth are involved. The hole heals quickly and is almost undetectable in a day ERIK P. SVANS DDS or so. This revolutionary method replaces the old painful technique where tissue would have to be removed from the roof of the mouth and then be grafted into the area where the gum had moved away from the tooth. This was very painful, and consisted of stitches followed by two to three weeks of recovery time with pain medicine. The results were sometimes hit or miss. Don’t continue to suffer with the discomfort of sensitive teeth or be afraid to smile! SC Dentistry provides all aspects of Dental Care, from cleanings to full mouth rehabilitation and works STEVEN C. CHANG DDS with many insurance plans.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? My father has been in the restaurant business my entire life and growing up I couldn’t imagine becoming an adult or raising a family doing anything else. My greatest memories as a child are spending time with my father in his kitchens- watching him interact with his team and guests and the joy it always brought him. WHAT FOOD IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Any food I can eat late night before bed! I can’t get a good night’s sleep if I don’t have a little snack right before I go to sleep. And I’m not sneaking into the kitchen to eat kale. I’m pretty sure it stems from waking up at night when I was little to my father getting home from the restaurant. We would sit up and have fried salami sandwiches. He cursed me! IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… I always think about going back to Brophy College Prep and coaching the swim team. As a young man my swim coaches had such a strong impact on my character and really helped form the person I am today. I think team sports are so important for building values that kids can carry with them into adulthood and what an amazing feeling it must be to be a part of that.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Christopher Collins, chef and owner of Grassroots Kitchen & Tap BY GABBY RICHMAN

FAVORITE FOOD MEMORY: Right now it’s watching my two-year-old son Topher eat his dinner. It’s fascinating to watch him analyze each and every bite as he’s learning to process what different colors and textures and tastes are. After each bite he always says “yum!” and licks each one of his fingers. It’s hilarious. I don’t know where he learned it from, but I think he may love food even more than I do! If that’s the case, we are in trouble!

ALL MUDDLED UP The Herb Box’s Blackberry Mojito BY ALISON BAILIN PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

W

hat started out as a catering company in Scottsdale called The Herb Box, which was named in homage to founder Susan Wilcox’s desire to serve savory twists on tried-and-true cuisine while offering fresh, seasonal ingredients, has grown to be a staple restaurant and bar concept in the Valley. So much so that in March the brand expanded from its two Scottsdale locations to add a third venue, this time located at the Colony in Midtown. An early standout on the cocktail menu is the most popular sipper at their two other locations – The Blackberry Mojito ($11). “Our Blackberry Mojito is a fun twist on the classic mojito using Dragon Berry Rum and fresh blackberries,” says Jessica Coulbourne, assistant general manager of The Herb Box. “The Dragon Berry Rum is a unique blend of strawberries and exotic dragon fruit, resulting in a bold – yet sweeter – flavor profile, especially when muddled with the fresh mint and lime. It really pops!” The cocktail was initially developed by Wilcox herself, as she was dreaming up her beverage program more than 20 years ago. “All of the cocktails that we offer, thanks to Susan’s forethought, are either very fruit forward or herbaceous, which makes them a great match for our gardenfocused menu,” Coulbourne says. 5538 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 480.393.0432; www.theherbbox.com. TEQUILAINSPIRED COCKTAILS

Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour

The Lime and the Coconut: This fruitflavored cocktail is an amazing mix of 100 percent agave blanco tequila, housemade limoncello, lime juice and pineapple syrup, finished with a coconut foam. Cost: $11 1 W. Jefferson St., Phoenix; 602.340.1924; www.bitterandtwistedaz.org.

Sierra Bonita Grill

Cost: $9 6933 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.264.0700; www.sierrabonitagrill.com.

Macayo’s Mexican Kitchen

The Mule-Jito: Sauza Blue Reposado Tequila mingles with coconut water, ginger beer, mint leaves, soda and a few secret ingredients to create this part-Mexican mule, part-mojito showstopper. Cost: $9 11107 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.596.1181; www.macayo.com.

TapHouse Kitchen

The Sweet Lily: Patron Silver Tequila, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice combine to cure whatever ails you on a hot, sunny day. Cost: $10 6137 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.656.0012; www.taphousekitchen.com.

Bink’s Kitchen + Bar

Altos Romero: This is an apple-infused cocktail – with tequila! To make it, Bink’s uses Reposado tequila as a base and then integrates apple liqueur, Aperol, lemon, orange and just a touch of an orange rosemary shrub for a fresh, citrus finish. Cost: $12 6107 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.664.9238; www.binkleysrestaurantgroup.com.

Mixology that goes beyond the margarita BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ

T

equila is the unofficial spirit of warm weather. And with Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, it’s no surprise that many Valley restaurants and bars are serving up cocktails using the Mexican liquor. The margarita may be one of the most popular mixers containing tequila, but that doesn’t mean all of the sipping spots in town are coloring inside the lines. We’re exploring how some of the Valley’s most innovative bartenders are making so much more than margaritas with this versatile ingredient.

The Clever Koi

The Paloma: Although it has the same name as Sierra Bonita’s offering, this Paloma has an entirely different feel. Rather than the orange kick, the cocktail adds in lemongrass soda and sea salt, along with fresh grapefruit and tequila for a fizzy and tart taste. Cost: $9 4236 N. Central Ave., Phoenix; 602.222.3474; www.thecleverkoi.com.

Waltz & Weiser Whiskey Bar and Cantina

Okra Cookhouse & Cocktails

Cold Brewed Dude: True to its name, this cocktail starts with cold-brewed coffee from Cartel Coffee Lab mixed with Tapatio Reposado Tequila. Then, Workhorse Rye Salted Cacao Bitters and pineapple syrup are added for WOW factor. Cost: $11 5813 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 602.296.4147; www.okraaz.com.

CELEBRATE WITH CEVICHE Six takes on this fresh fish dish BY TARYN JEFFRIES

eat in the heat. Here in the Valley, you can find so many variations – from traditional to extremely unique and modern. With so many interpretations, why settle on just one version? Check out these six recommendations to see what your ceviche style is!

Asi Es La Vida

A

s we venture into the month of May and prep for all of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations around town sure to feature below-the-border dishes, it’s time to join in on the fun and we can’t think of a better way than with an exhilarating, chilled serving of ceviche. The beauty of ceviche is that the base ingredients (citrus juices) “cook” the fish through acid and a little bit of science, making it a quick dish to prepare and a light and refreshing treat to

3602 N. 24th St., Phoenix 602.952.1255 www.asieslavidarestaurant.com If you are looking for a traditional and authentic experience, with dishes straight out of Mexico City, Asi Es La Vida should be your next restaurant stop. You’ll quickly find that all of the menu items feature complex and complementary layers of flavor, as do the decor, vibe and service. The intimate space and the family feel make it a great place to have dinner with family or a romantic night out on the town with your sweetheart. The ceviche is traditional and simplistic, though heady with a full flavor profile. You’ll find the usual suspects of ingredients: shrimp in a citrus UPTOWN |

juice marinade along some sweet onions that take a bit of the tang out of the citrus. The dish is adorned with avocado slices and cilantro. There is not an abundance of liquid, allowing for easy delivery from bowl, to chip to mouth!

Buck & Rider 4225 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix 602.346.0110 www.buckandrider.com Buck & Rider’s interior and exterior bring about the feeling that you are in a beachside house and the menu further instills that beach life vibe. You’ll find a strong focus on seafood and raw bar items, all extremely fresh and perfectly prepared, along with cleverly crafted cocktails. A seafood focused restaurant should certainly deliver on a perfectly executed ceviche and Buck & Rider does not disappoint. The creamy texture and slight sweetness of the red snapper is the perfect match for the acidic citrus flavors, creamy avocado, tart cherry tomato and biting red onion. The larger pieces of

cucumber add to the texture contrast and you can look, but you likely won’t find a more beautifully presented ceviche.

Hula’s Modern Tiki 4700 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 602.265.8454 www.hulasmoderntiki.com We love how Hula’s represents a simpler and classier time in our history, and how the menu, food and beverages have been crafted to reflect the classic flavors of the ‘50s and ‘60s with modern elevations here and there. The fusion of Polynesian and American flavors is unique and beloved by patrons. The restaurant’s Hawaiian ceviche takes on new flavor with the incorporation of coconut milk, adding a touch of sweetness to the fresh white fish, citrus juices, chili, cilantro and garlic. The end result is a sturdier ceviche than you might find at other spots, with the majority of the juices being absorbed in to the white fish. The special wonton chips served alongside your ceviche provide an additional texture contrast, making this a dish you won’t soon forget.

Joyride Taco House 5202 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 602.274.8226 www.joyridetacohouse.com The vibrant interior and upbeat rhythms will draw you into Joyride Taco House

and the fresh menu offerings will have you coming back with more and more friends upon each new visit. The vibe and flavors contained here are something that you just can’t keep to yourself. The bar offerings, specifically the specialty crafted margaritas, will keep you planted and refreshed, and you’ll want to order just about everything on the menu to share amongst your table. You may need to order an extra serving of the ceviche because it’s so good that you won’t want to share. The slightly sweet shrimp is consolidated with a combination of pico de gallo, avocado and lime juice. The unique addition to this ceviche is the jicama which plays into the sweetness and the bite of the onions and peppers. Grab your chips and a corner of the table and try to fend off your curious table mates!

Otro Cafe 6035 N. 7th St., Phoenix 602.266.0831 www.otrocafe.com The name alone – the Spanish word for other – invites diners to indulge in something a little unexpected departure from the on-almost-every-corner-Mexicanrestaurant. The portions and service are always on point and the menu boasts all day breakfast for those of you in need of mid-day chilaquiles. With two different ceviches on the menu, you’re sure to find MAY 2016 |

one pleasing to your particular palate. The traditional ceviche de camarón features wild Mexican shrimp marinated in lime juice and garlic. It’s then kicked up a notch with some Homeboy’s jalapeno hot sauce, pico de gallo and then garnished with olive oil, jicama and cucumber. Your alternate ceviche is the ceviche de pescado; an amalgamation of red snapper in the same marinade accompanied by cucumbers, windmill tomatoes, serrano chiles, sliced radishes, red onion, cilantro and basil. Both dishes provide a unique take on the traditional dish while imparting new flavors and a visually pleasing presentation.

Salvadoreno Restaurant 8911 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 602.870.2955 www.salvadorenorestaurant.com When done right, you cannot beat the charm of a successful family-run business and Savadoreno is excelling in that field. The restaurant offers some of the best Salvadorian food in the Valley, just ask anyone that has ever ordered one of the immense and authentic pupusas! You’ll always receive ample portions and great service. If you’re new to Salvadorian cuisine, the staff will be more than happy to walk you through the dishes. The ceviche de camarón is served as a salad of sorts, which eliminates the need for chips. Gather up your fork and dig into the perfectly marinated shrimp with pico de gallo and cilantro. Once you find your salad eliminated, make sure to grab your spoon so you don’t miss one drop of the flavorful juices left behind.

THE ORCHARD PHOENIX

Your new neighborhood hangout BY GABBY RICHMAN PHOTOS BY LIZ LASTRA

I

f you know of Luci’s Marketplace (and let’s be honest, everyone in town knows about Luci’s), you know that it’s the place to be in Phoenix. This month there’s a new hot spot in town that takes your favorite local spot and amps it up – Luci’s at The Orchard, brought to you by coowners Jerry Mansoor, and Ken and Lucia Schnitzer. The two-acre space, equipped with a splash pad, encompasses three separate spaces that form The Orchard: The Market, Splurge and Pomelo. The Market, similar to the first location of Luci’s Marketplace, will offer up breakfast, lunch and coffee. “The market will have the same great service, ambiance and energy as the 16th

Street location with a very European look with white subway tiles and wood floors. The difference is that we will have driveup curbside ordering and pick up service and a juice bar along with our great coffee,” Mansoor says. Pomelo, which showcases American cuisine with hints of Arizona flavors, is located in an adobe-style home built in the 1920’s. Between fireplaces, high ceilings, and the original dining room UPTOWN |

and floors, you’ll feel transported back in time from the moment you walk in the character-filled restaurant. “The feel is warm with a mixture of mahogany and alder wood to show the transition from the old home and the new construction,” Mansoor explains. Whether you want to enjoy a drink at the bar, grab a meal in the dining room, host a dinner party in one of the private dining rooms or enjoy the weather outside on the patio, Pomelo has everything you could ever need. Some of the menu highlights include a pan seared pork chop, the Sheppard’s pie and a wood fired pizza featuring roasted veggies and herb goat cheese. Looking for a sweet treat after your meal? For a fun take on desert, pop into Splurge, the ice cream shop on the Orchard’s property. Splurge will be serving up gelato (otherwise known as the Italian version of ice cream), as well as custom-made gelato popsicles. “We felt that this would be a great way for anyone to enjoy a made to order popsicle that nobody does in town. Along with the popsicles we will be serving gelato in cones, cookie sandwiches and milk shakes,” Mansoor says Between these three spaces, you’ll have all of your main meals covered and never have to go anywhere else again.
