YOU ASKED!

Dr. Gino Tutera, SottoPelle® founder answers your questions.

SottoPelle®… Helping Parkinson’s Disease patients enjoy a better quality life Q: What is the connection between hormones and Parkinson’s disease (PD)? A: According to the American Neurological Association, estrogen may play a role in the severity of PD symptoms. Sex hormones serve a critical role beyond reproduction in overall health, and are directly related to neuromuscular and cognitive function hormones. These hormones have been shown to reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. The latest research demonstrates the relationship between PD, low testosterone and estrogen levels. This association is seen with other neurological disorders such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Q: How can SottoPelle® help Parkinson’s patients? A: Hormonal balance helps to restore the body to its normal physiological state. Many PD patients using SottoPelle® Therapy are experiencing improved neuromuscular function. SottoPelle® hormonal therapy uses estradiol pellets to support dopamine production and decreases inflammation in the female brain, as does testosterone in the male brain.

Q: What are Parkinson’s patients experiencing using SottoPelle®? A: Early-onset PD patients are experiencing significant improvement in their quality of life with SottoPelle® including: more energy and vitality, reduced progression of symptoms, better stamina and motivation to exercise, improved balance and coordination, increased mobility and flexibility, better cognitive function, reduced tremor, better assimilation of medications and a greater sense of well-being. This helps patients become more functional, offering them more vitality and energy to keep active.

“Wow! I feel like a new woman since starting SottoPelle®. If a person like me (diagnosed with PD in 2008) can feel this energetic again – then anyone can! I feel more youthful, alert and alive!” —Patti Meese, SottoPelle® Parkinson’s patient since 2013; Michael J. Fox Foundation Genetics Ambassador; Parkinson’s Action Network State Director, NC

“SottoPelle® is making a significant difference in how I feel every day. It’s an important addition to my Parkinson’s protocol.” —Brian Baehr, SottoPelle® PD patient since 2013; Founder, Baehr Challenge for Parkinson’s Research, Phoenix, AZ

Summer is wax season.

S

o many things to do, so many places to go! This month, we’re all about rubgy. As a sport, it’s fun to watch (and did you read about the rivalry between the participating teams?!). Fast-paced and fun, you’ll definitely want to see who wins this year at the Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale Rugby Bowl: Beauty & The Beast. But of course, in Scottsdale fashion, this event also has so many “extras.” Check out the innovative fashion show by Phoenix Fashion Week between the matches, and try your hand (err, arm) at a match with the world’s best arm wrestler. Check out the story and meet one of the players on page 44. If you’re looking to head out of town, we share some unique places to visit around the state on page 70. I actually haven’t been to a few of those yet, so they’re on my list for this summer. Who doesn’t like a quick road trip?! A few more must-adds for your calendar—catching a performance with each of the up-and-coming performers we featured in our story on page 48. We profiled six local people to watch who are certainly rising stars. It sounds like April is gearing up to be another busy month. If you want to take a break with a lazy, relaxing day somewhere in there, we’ve also got amazing brunch spots to check out (page 116). Sounds perfect to me!

And it’s not just your boards we’re talking about.

What is one spot you’d love to visit? “Growing up in Arizona and living here most of my life, I have to say that one of my favorite places to visit is Courthouse Square and Downtown Prescott. I attended summer camp in Prescott nearly every summer growing up, and was a camp counselor, as well, at the YMCA camp up in Prescott, and have such great memories of visiting that area. Now, my mom lives up in the area and as a family, we get to share it with our kids and create new memories. It’s so much fun for me.”

After her service in the Navy and at the White House, Mariano now brings her outstanding career in medicine to CEOs, celebrities, and other individuals whose busy lifestyles and careers demand a unique level of service and discretion when it comes to health care. continued…

up close “I was blessed that the president nominated me for rear admiral, one star, before I retired. I became the first Filipino in American history, male or female, to become a Navy Admiral. I think that was my greatest achievement,” says Mariano of her nomination by President Bill Clinton. President Clinton also wrote the foreword to Mariano’s 2010 book, The White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents—A Memoir. Much of her time in the White House was spent side-by-side with the presidents and their families. Now, she brings her many years of one-of-a-kind experience and expertise to a new medical “family”—those who she serves through her concierge medical practice at the Center for Executive Medicine (www.drcmariano.com). “When I retired from the Navy and left the White House, I was recruited by the Mayo Clinic here in Scottsdale to see patients in the Executive Health Program, and I was with them for four and a half years. It’s a wonderful institution,” Mariano says. During that time, she discovered that many of her patients wanted her exclusively as their own full-time doctor, but under the program at Mayo, she was unable to fulfill that request. “A group of them got together and said, ‘Listen, if you leave, we will put together some money to join your practice. If you move up north by the Desert Mountain area and form a practice, we’ll come and we’ll bring our friends,’” she explains. Mariano left Mayo on good terms and hired her medic from the White House, James “Jim” McLeod, who is now the vice president and clinical administrator for the Center for Executive Medicine. McLeod’s highest position held in medicine was senior independent duty technician in the White House Medical

Unit during the Clinton Administration. His stellar performance during his first tour at the White House earned him a second set of orders as director of training for the White House Medical Unit during President George W. Bush’s final four years in office. “He left the White House and came and joined me as our office manager. We started off with 80 patients, and we now have over 300,” explains Mariano. “My motto for care is, ‘We treat every patient as though he or she was the President of the United States.’ “Something in my practice is what I call ‘The STAR Principle,’” Mariano continues. “I was very blessed to retire with a one star as a rear admiral. Many of my patients are stars in that sense—they’re very successful. But if you take the letters of the word ‘star,’ they stand for what I believe in for a practice. S stands for service, T

stands for Trust, A is for Access because they have 24-7 email and cell phone access to me. But R is the most important, and that’s Relationship.” When patients come to the Center for Executive Medicine, Mariano treats them like old friends. She enjoys spending time listening to her clients and getting to know them. “I’m not a psychiatrist. I’m a board certified internist. But I do life coaching. It isn’t all about the labs and the physical necessarily,” she says. She talks to her patients about what’s going on in their lives, and she provides some mentoring and coaching, too. “It’s sort of being somebody to share their troubles with and guiding them along the path of life.” For individuals or families interested in becoming patients of the Center for Executive Medicine, there is an annual membership fee for the service, per patient, per year, and although Mariano operates from her office, she is available to travel out-of-state and overseas. “The only time you cannot talk to me directly is if I’m with a patient, and then calls get forwarded to my office,” notes the doctor. In that case, McLeod will get that call. The office is located in a beautifully appointed private office space. “It looks like an extension of the West Wing,” says Mariano. “As soon as they come into the reception room, we stand up and we’re waiting for them. I always tell them, ‘The appointment starts when you get here.’ It’s all about time with the patient and they’re not rushed.” Concierge medicine is highly interactive and Mariano embraces the experiences with her patients. “It’s the reason we went into medicine,” Mariano finishes. “It’s about treating patients and making a difference.”

Scottsdale s' Top Hair Colorist. . . Rodney Gentry With the bustle and glamour of another Oscars ceremony just behind us, the styles and trends sported on the red carpet are spreading across the U.S., observes Rodney Gentry, Scottsdale’s top hair colorist. “It’s not just the clothing that is important as stars work their way along the red carpet these days,” he says. “Hairstyles at the Oscars are influential across the country, and this year is no exception. Whether it was worn up or down, or short or long, hair was sleek and shiny. Messy, tousled locks are a thing of the past. In 2015, it is all about smooth sophistication.” As the best hair colorist in Scottsdale, Gentry is often tasked by his clients with reproducing a certain look—and the Oscars is a key event for setting the styles that will be popular over the following months. Color-wise, 2015 was all about blonde hair, with plentiful highlights creating a sunkissed effect, even after dark. Gentry’s color expertise perfectly positions him for helping the men and women of Scottsdale to achieve the style of the stars. His approach ensures that each client’s face and complexion are complemented by the color choices that they make. And prior to the color treatment, a personalized consultation takes place, where the hair’s condition, history and other factors are considered. In addition to his specialist color skills, Gentry also ensures that his clients benefit from the latest products, blending scientific advances with natural ingredients. The Goldwell Kerasilk Smoothing Treatment is a prime example. The intensely nourishing process tames even the wildest of locks into smooth submission, allowing Gentry’s clients to achieve fantastically desirable tresses that would be just perfect for the red carpet.

“It’s all about finding the right look for each person,” he concludes. “Hair coloring is definitely not a one-size-fits-all style of profession. It requires artistic flair and passion. The Oscars hairstyles might only just be beginning to flow from the red carpet to other areas of the U.S., but women (and men) across the country are now looking to their own locks to see how they can keep their tresses on-trend.” And Rodney Gentry is certainly helping them to do just that

Bringing star-studded glamour to his clients in Scottsdale is something about which top hair colorist Rodney Gentry feels extremely passionate. “A good color can make an individual feel on top of the world, while treatments like the Kerasilk Smoothing Treatment can bring a touch of glamour to even the dullest and most damaged hair. But part of specialist coloring is ensuring that clients look good for more than just one night. It is about giving them a style that makes them look and feel like a million bucks, but that they can easily maintain once back home.” To this end, Gentry is able to recommend personalized combinations of products for each client, with an emphasis on rich conditioning treatments for maintaining softness, along with volumizing mousses and sprays for fine hair and color-fast shampoos and conditioners to lock in color and ensure that hair looks better for longer.

Rodney Gentry can be contacted on 480-639-2000, or at www.rodneygentry.com. Visit him at 10201 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 28, Scottsdale AZ 85258.

LEGACY OF HOPE

The Pearce Family Foundation: A true angel BY JENNIFER HUTCHISON

W

hen fifth generation Phoenician, longtime Scottsdale resident, and Pearce Family Foundation Founder Meghan Pearce was a little girl, she recalls spending time at the company that had been started by her great grandfather. That company was later passed down through the family. She remembers volunteering there, as well as other places, as she grew up, and realized she enjoyed giving back. So in 2013, Pearce launched the Pearce Family Foundation (www.pearcefamilyfoundation.com), a non-profit organization that gives back through its main initiative, Angels Around Us of Arizona. The grant program helps families that have a child suffering a chronic or life-threatening illness. “If a child has a strong and stable environment, it helps with recovery,” Pearce explains. Currently, the group is working hard to meet the growing needs in the community. “We have helped about 10 families since last April,” she reports. “We have already awarded $13,000 in grants.” Pearce explains that the funds, which have been used to pay bills, buy groceries, and even make car repairs, will hopefully ease the burdens of daily life. “We hope to give parents more time to spend with their children,” she says. Fundraising efforts are ongoing, and include the upcoming Runway of Hope fashion show that will be held on May 8.

Etc.

What have you learned about yourself since creating the foundation? Since starting the Pearce Family Foundation I have learned that you are the only person who can stand up for yourself and your dreams. I have found a drive inside me that I did not know existed before. What has been your biggest challenge that you have overcome? One of the biggest challenges I have had to overcome was believing in myself and having others believe in my dream of the Pearce Family Foundation. What is one thing you believe should be taught in school, that isn’t? Our school system is lacking a course on how to transition from being in a school environment to applying for jobs, and how to go about doing that. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

While melanoma is certainly serious, it’s almost always treatable when diagnosed early. It helps to remember your ABCs: A – Asymmetry. Do the two halves of the mole match? B – Border. Melanomas tend to be uneven, with scalloped edges. C – Color. Melanomas may consist of multiple colors. D – Diameter. Typically, a melanoma is ¼ inch or larger in diameter. E – Evolving. Moles shouldn’t change size or color, or itch, crust, or bleed. We’re supporting the American Academy of Dermatology’s efforts to provide FREE melanoma screenings on Monday, May 4th – times and locations are below. See you there! STEPHANIE KOPLAN

Making a difference one day at a time BY GABBY RICHMAN

G

iving back has always been an important part of Stephanie Koplan’s life, so when her father was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013, the natural thing for her to do was to get even more involved—and she did. So much so, in fact, that in addition to being a business sales consultant for Staples Corporate and a freelance makeup artist, Koplan was just nominated as Woman of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The foundation that funds blood, pancreatic and breast cancer is close to her heart, and she hopes to spread awareness to show that everyone can make a difference. She expresses that it is always important to know what it’s like on the other side, and that the community as a whole is more powerful together than one individual, which is why it is important to be involved. In her free time, Koplan enjoys spending time with her family and going to the batting cages.

Etc.

Why do you feel it is important for people to give back? Without people giving back we would not be where we are in today’s society. Realistically, giving back provides more than just healthcare—it also provides jobs; research; updated technology; food; a safe, comfortable home for a family; and more time with a loved one. What do you like to do with your family in your free time? EATING! Haha–some of my favorite memories with my family are eating together. What is your favorite part of doing makeup? It is very rewarding. I am boosting someone’s self-esteem and being part of their special day! It is also very therapeutic for me—I’m painting! SO SCOTTSDALE! |

ASK TINA:

Everything you need to know about app development There is often a lot of jargon thrown around our industry, which in turn can be overwhelming and confusing to the most important person, the end customer or client. Here are a few frequently asked questions that will shed some light on mobile applications and educate you on the process.

DO I NEED A MOBILE APPLICATION? A) The statistics speak for themselves • • •

6

According to Nielsen Ratings, consumers spent 89% of their time on media through mobile apps and only 11% through mobile web. According to an IDC research study, 79 percent of Americans between the ages of 18-44 check their smartphones within 15 minutes of waking up each morning. According to Flurry, apps command 86% of the average U.S. consumer’s time, or 2 hrs and 19 min per day, while mobile web usage has continued to decline to an average of 14% or roughly 22 minutes per day. The average user checks their phone 1,500 times each week. They use their phones for three hours and 16 minutes each day, adding up to almost an entire day each week.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A WEB APP AND A NATIVE APP? A) If you have to stretch your screen to view it, it’s not a native app. Put simply, native apps are separately developed platforms that are distributed and downloaded from stores such as iTunes and Google Play and they give you more company/brand interaction instantly with the push of one button. Web apps are merely mobile versions of their original desktop form and open in a browser.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO DEVELOP A NATIVE APP? A) They can range from $10,000 to $250,000. That’s why it’s imperative you go to a company who can guide you through the process and make it work for your budget.

CODERED-I.COM

WHAT IS THE PROCESS? A) In short, we analyze your business within the industry, provide a competitive analysis, integrate your customer’s needs, and present a preliminary concept to assure that everyone’s on the same page. After implementing any changes, we take your concept, develop it and execute a full market launch. Depending on the stage of your project, should you come in with a full-fledged concept or an idea that needs to be vetted, our involvement can range to suit your needs.

WHY DO I NEED AN APP? A) Today small businesses have the power to obtain information on their organization like never before. Apps give you detailed backend analytics regarding your customers, clients and employees, while also providing higher interaction rates. In other words, apps help you run your organization more efficiently so you know where you’re heading.

in the market. Therefore, we take it upon ourselves to include our customers in our marketing initiatives. In essence, our extensive marketing efforts and campaigns champion our customers.

IF YOU BUILD MY APP, DO I OWN IT? A) Absolutely. We develop it for you, so it’s yours.

DO YOU HELP MAINTAIN MY APP? A) We can if you like. That’s part of having a long-term relationship. While there’s a cost involved, as with managing anything, it’s about ensuring that your app constantly provides value, runs your business and improves your bottom line.

ARE YOU HIRING? A) I have a tight, exclusive team that I’m proud of and I’m always looking for amazing talent to join our team. However, it takes a special person to become a part of CodeRed-I.

WHY ARE YOU DIFFERENT? A) Our clients are our partners. It’s not enough to develop apps for them at the highest premium quality, but they also have to do well

cottsdale Quarter is a retail mecca. The open-air center offers 370,000 square feet of specialty shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. It harmoniously combines a city vibe with the serenity of the desert, which makes it one of the premier shopping destinations in the Valley. Of course, such a hip and elegant destination requires a hip and elegantly dressed leader. Richard Hunt, Scottsdale Quarter’s general manager, is the perfect guy for the job. As a former Macy’s retailer, Hunt has always been immersed in the fashion industry. “I’ve always felt that you need to dress the part, and fashion is something that has always been at the forefront of my mind,” he says. As the representative of a fashionforward center, Hunt’s style is approachable yet professional, and classic yet fun. “My everyday style is very classic— button-up shirts, sometimes with a French cuff, and slacks. I always need a reliable, yet stylish pair of dress shoes, and lately, I’ve been incorporating patterned socks. I’m not afraid of color—my magenta gingham dress shirt is a staple in my wardrobe.” Scottsdale is home to beautiful landscapes, beautiful faces, and beautiful garments. Working in such a fashionable city at such a popular shopping center does not intimate Hunt; rather, it excites him. “I’m a very confident person overall and being in a fashionable place just amplifies that,” he says.

n 1996, Arizona State Football fans were flying high. The team was the best it had ever been, and all eyes were on New Year’s Day of 1997 and the Rose Bowl. Sadly, the game didn’t turn out how ASU fans were hoping (see sidebar), but it’s time to settle the score. This time, though, instead of football, it’s time for some rugby. For ASU Rugby player Ryan Spiwak, it’s a chance to represent his school playing his newfound favorite sport. “I first started playing rugby my freshman year of college at ASU,” says Spiwak. “I played many sports from a very young age, including soccer and basketball, but chose to focus mainly on football, which I began playing at 9-yearsold. I had chances to play football for various universities, but decided not to play and instead explored different college opportunities. After receiving an academic scholarship to ASU, I decided to travel to the desert to become a Sun Devil.” That decision lead him to being a starter with ASU’s Rugby team, which is gearing up for the second local Rugby Bowl, an event that introduced thousands of fans to the sport last year. While there are many sites online that give full details on how Rugby is played (we liked this one: http://www.sportsgrid.com/rugby/ the-beginners-guide-to-watching-rugbyunion/), the best way to figure out the game is to watch or even play it, as Spiwak can confirm. “Although I was an experienced athlete, the transition from football to rugby was interesting,” he explains. “I had to learn new rules and adapt to a completely new sport that I had never played before. After playing multiple positions in football, from linebacker to running back, I felt right at home playing outside centre for the ASU Rugby team. Aside from the playing the game itself, my favorite aspect of rugby is the camaraderie you form with your fellow teammates, as well as with those you face on the pitch. I am very honored to be a part of the fastest-growing sport in America, and feel privileged to represent the Arizona State Rugby Football Club in the upcoming event.”

AIMING TO WIN Spiwak learned from his teammates and his coach Gary Lane, who played for the team when he attended ASU. After moving to Arizona from London with his parents, Lane joined the rugby team, and held every position in the club during his five years on the team, from treasurer to captain. While some college football coaches pull in seven-figure incomes, Lane has been running the program at ASU for 13 years as a volunteer. Like Spiwak, he is excited for the event. “I am so excited about so much,” says Lane. “First, our new venue [Scottsdale Stadium]. Being in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale is a fantastic place for an event. It is a beautiful stadium and has so many seating options that it can accommodate everyone at all different price levels. Second, I am excited for the ASU team. We have had a grueling year playing the country’s best collegiate programs (including BYU, the reigning Collegiate Champions) and we have seen our team get better and better. We are looking to end our season on a good note. Last, we are excited to be playing Ohio State, a great Midwest school, with a great tradition in sports. We want revenge for the 1997 National Championship loss, right?”

RU G BY — Y E S , I T ’ S A S P O RT F O R YO U For anyone unfamiliar with the sport or thinking this event isn’t for them, Lane has some words of encouragement. “They should attend because it is a fantastic event, with non-stop action,” he says. “You won’t want to miss the hardnosed tackling and the electric running of the players. It is going to be a battle royale. The action just doesn’t stop for 80 minutes.”

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS Co-founder of the event, Jason Rose, is also excited about it, but not just for the rugby. This year, there are additions to broaden the appeal to a wider audience, and he also echoes Lane’s enthusiasm for the new venue.

A H E A R T B R E A K I N G D A Y Ohio State fans remember Jan. 1, 1997 as day of victory and school pride, while Arizona State fans remember the day as one of the most heartbreaking. On that day, one of the most dramatic finishes to a college football bowl game unfolded on the gridiron at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The undefeated Arizona State Sun Devils football team, coming off an 11-0 season and ranked #2 in the AP College Poll, entered the game brimming with confidence. Led by senior quarterback and Heisman Award finalist Jake “The Snake” Plummer, they sought the university’s first football national championship. The season’s results justified the team’s expectations for the 1997 Rose Bowl. On its way to an undefeated season, they had even held the 1996 College Football National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers scoreless in a 19-0 victory. OSU also had high expectations. The team had finished the season with a 10-1 record, and was ranked #4 in the AP Poll. OSU Football Head Coach John Cooper was also no stranger to the Sun Devil athletics program. Cooper had led the Sun Devils from 1985 to 1987. And, the Buckeyes quarterback Joe Germaine was a Mesa native who had even spent one year at Scottsdale Community College. The game was a back-and-forth affair. As time wound down in the fourth quarter, Plummer scrambled for an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Sun Devils in the lead with 1:40 left in the game. After starting at their own 35-yard line, Germaine led OSU to one of the most unforgettable gamewinning drives in college football history. With 19 seconds left, Germaine threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver David Boston. Ultimately, the Buckeyes triumphed over ASU, 20-17.–Jennifer Parks

“The move into the spring training home of the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants is pretty exciting,” he says. “It will be the first rugby match ever held in the stadium, and it sets up perfectly for the event. We’re offering some very creative ticketing options to get in on all the action, too. From families to partiers, there’s something for everyone, especially pre- and post-event, with all the great restaurants and bars near the stadium. “We’re also thrilled about some events within the main event of rugby,” continues Rose. “This includes an innovative fashion show between the matches by Phoenix Fashion Week, as well as the world’s best arm wrestler—the Muhammad Ali of his sport—taking on people who want to challenge him. Whether it’s playing one-on-one vs. Michael Jordan or hitting against Randy Johnson, it’s not often fans get to take on the best in a sport. We also saw how people—especially women—reacted to the rugby players last year. So we decided to make the event sexier this year. That started with a great new title sponsor, the addition of a fashion show, and a venue most everyone has had a great time in at one time or another.”

THE GAMES The additions are sure to make for a fun event, but lets not forget the main reason to attend: the games themselves. “The event has great athletic integrity,” says Rose. “ASU is one of the top rugby programs in the country. We thought it would be intriguing to match them up against a great team in Ohio State from the Big 10, especially since that school won the college football championship this year. Having another local team in Grand Canyon University play a school like USC will be great, too. Look, anyone who has enjoyed Scottsdale Stadium for spring training is going to love it for The Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale Rugby Bowl: Beauty & The Beast.” The Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale Rugby Bowl will take place on Sat., April 18. JARED KOLESAR, 25 Singer/songwriter

Performs with his group, Jared & The Mill (he’s pictured here, third from right, with the group). Currently on a nationwide tour through early May. Upcoming Arizona date: April 18, at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival at WestWorld. What drew you to singing? That’s hard to say—I don’t consider myself as much of a singer as a songwriter. I loved writing and creating songs. Performing them vocally was kind of secondary until I got serious about wanting to pursue music. I always enjoyed singing along with Disney movies when I was a tyke though—that was probably the stem of it. Your favorite genres to sing are: Folk music is a lot of fun because of how

heavily it relies on expression rather than vocal talent. But it’s hard to resist a good rock tune. I also love singing along with Miss Norah Jones in the car. I’ve been pretty heavy on her tunes lately. Your inspirations behind your music: It’s cliché to say, but my life is my main source of inspiration. I gather emotions and feelings and experiences as I follow my course through life. These things I know better than anybody else because they’re mine, after all, so I express them. However, I do from time to time write about things I witness. Accomplishments you’re most proud of so far: I think everything I do in this crazy life I live is worth being proud of. I think I’m most proud of getting together a group of gentlemen for a band and seeing them develop into best friends. It’s been incredibly inspiring and humbling to have the opportunity to share this career with them.

How has music and this group changed or affected you? Music is something that helps people sort things out in their mind. And playing music and writing songs has helped me better establish my perception of myself, including my self-worth. Playing music with these lads has pointed my bearings in a fairly unexpected direction, but I couldn’t be happier about the purpose it’s brought to my life. In 10 years, you hope to be: Eating peanut butter. When you aren’t performing, you’re usually: Reading–Hemingway most likely. Although, I’ve found that playing pool is a wonderful way to get to know people lately, so I’ve been inviting a lot of acquaintances and friends to play pool in my free time, which there isn’t much of that. I work three day jobs when I’m not on tour. Find more information, music, and show dates at www.jaredandthemill.com.

Metropolitan Opera tenor Neil Rosenshein. The training is ongoing, and so are the challenges.

What drew you to music? From a very young age, I was exposed to music of all types. My parents introduced me to country, classical, jazz, and everything in-between, while my four older brothers kept me educated on the more modern genres.

Accomplishments you’re most proud of so far? Performing my first leading tenor role in an opera at age 21 was a proud moment for me. You aren’t an opera singer until you sing in an actual opera, and for the first time I was able to prove to myself that I could do it. I was now a real tenor.

Opera singer

How have you trained? I was an aspiring soccer player until the age of 17, when I started taking voice lessons with a great local teacher, Stephen Crawford. I later moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music and to study with my current teacher and mentor, former

In 10 years, you hope to be: My goal is that a decade from now I will have the opportunity to sing for audiences in major opera houses across the country and the world. That would be my dream. If you could sing with any person in the world, it would be: My father! He is a wonderful singer. We would spend hours in the evenings after school, singing to backing tracks together. We still spontaneously burst into song from time to time when hanging out together! When you aren’t singing, you’re usually… Playing soccer, watching boxing, and eating BBQ. CHERR A. M. MONROE (PERFORMING AS GYRL KYNG), 34 Comedian

Upcoming performances: April 22 at Stand Up Live and April 29 at the Tempe Improv. What drew you to comedy? My love of being able to make people laugh drew me to comedy. Laughter is a powerfully positive addiction, and I want to infect the world with it! Where do you perform? I perform at bars, clubs, and other venues all over the Valley including Stand Up Live, Tempe Improv, Stand Up Scottsdale, and CrackUps. Accomplishments you are most proud of so far? Playing my first out-of-state show in Las Vegas, performing at Stand Up Live, and doing an interview with WBMC Radio are my most proud accomplishments. Things that inspire your comedy routine? My friends, family, job, and daily life occurrences all add color to my comedy. Life is comedy, and therefore, is the greatest topic to draw material from. Are any topics ever off-limits? I don’t think any topics are really ever offlimits but, for the time being, I choose to stay away from politics and religion. In 10 years, where do you hope to be? I hope to be traveling the world on tour, working on film and TV projects, as well as charity and fundraiser events. I would also love to do a USO tour! When you’re not performing, you’re usually... When I’m not performing I’m usually at the gym, writing, going out to support other comedians’ shows, or working on material with Brandonn BHouse.

Pre-professional ballet dancer Accepted an offer to join the prestigious American Ballet Theater Studio Company in New York in Sept. 2015. Upcoming performances: In May at the Mesa Arts Center. Information and tickets at www. masterballetacademy.com. Prior to May she is working on two special pieces choreographed specifically for Phoenix Ballet (the ballet company associated with Master Ballet Academy) by renowned choreographers that will be performed at the Mesa Arts Center and then also in Poland in May. What drew you to ballet? The artistic quality of movement and the beauty of ballet drew me to the discipline. When I am on stage I want to bring the happiness that comes with the art to the audience. Accomplishments you’re most proud of so far: Training for and winning a gold medal at the USA IBC (International Ballet Competition) in Jackson, Miss. in June 2014. It was wonderful to meet so many exceptional dancers from all over the world. Accepting an offer to join the American Ballet Theater Studio Company in New York. Being a spokesperson for Grishko World, a world-renowned pointe shoe and dance wear manufacturer in Moscow. Any favorite role/show to perform? The peasant girl Giselle from the ballet Giselle. I have only performed variations from the ballet, but I love it because I love the character, and I have her name! How much time do you spend training each week? Thirty to 35 hours a week, about six hours a day. [Ed. note: She attends the online school Arizona Connections Academy to allow for her training and performance schedule.] In 10 years, you hope to be: I would love to be touring and performing with a major ballet company as a principal dancer. When you aren’t performing, you’re usually: Training! SEAN MULLANEY, 25 Singer/actor

In addition to performing as a solo artist, is currently also performing with The Instant Classics through June, when he leaves for a West Coast tour. You sing and act. Any preference or are they intertwined? I definitely prefer to sing because I actually know how to do that and have more confidence with it. I love to act, but I kind of make it up as I go and don’t take it so seriously, which has oddly only helped me as it turns out. What drew you to performing? I started to take singing lessons in high school because I had this genius idea that if I could sing, I would for sure get all the girls. It didn’t pay off for me then, but I did find my fiancée while doing musical theatre later, so mission accomplished! Your favorite genres to sing are: Rock mostly, but I love a song full of heartfelt emotion. If it’s something that I can get behind emotionally, I know I will love it—and usually that will translate to the audience loving it. Do you write your own songs? If so, what inspires them? I co-write all my songs with a brilliant musician named Billy Cioffi. I like to think I bring the clay and he sculpts it into a piece of art. I love writing about what I care about, and that’s bettering the world by raising awareness of important societal issues with a rocking beat. Accomplishments you’re most proud of so far: I’m hopefully in the process of that answer with my current album, but I’ve also found true love at a young age, and that is a very rare feat in my opinion. In 10 years, you hope to be: Touring the world spreading uplifting messages of hope and eternal optimism through my music to massive crowds by day, and living with my beautiful family on a large plot of land where we can have everything we need by the power of our own hands by night.

PHOTOS BY CARL SCHULTZ

When you aren’t performing, you’re usually: I enjoy living my life in the present and learning about life through experiences in the world, or playing Xbox. Plastic Surgery Without the Pain (It’s like having your cake and eating it too!)

Before & After

When it comes to plastic surgery, NOW you can have your cake and eat it too! You no longer have to worry that amazing surgical results must come along with the painful, prolonged post surgical recoveries that untill recently were the norm for most breast surgeries, tummy tucks and face lifts. Today Double Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Andrew Wolin, M.D. is a pioneer in new, surgical techniques using “Extended Local anesthesia” a technique that provides long (and we mean long) acting anesthesia allowing patients to have plastic surgery “in office” without the need for general anesthetic. The REALTORS® who sell luxury homes fastest, and for the most money, couldn’t be more obvious. Never before has one company reached such heights. Perhaps it’s the locally-owned heritage since 1947. Or the impressive, civic-minded men and women who make it what it is today. Or the iconic, blue signs that have become status symbols for front yards across Arizona. Not just because they will soon mean sold, but because these signs now mean something else. Class. Profit. Promise. Without question, the sign of the times.

“Defenders of Wildlife is thrilled to be working with Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center and dedicated conservationist Ann Siner [founder and CEO of My Sister’s Closet, the title sponsor of the event] to raise awareness and support for the plight of Mexican gray wolves,” he says. “Last year we raised more than $22,000 to help raise awareness about the Mexican gray wolf, and this year, we hope to double that and continue raising awareness so people understand how terribly close this animal is to extinction,” says Siner. “We have a chance to save this wolf right here in Arizona, but it’s going to take education and everyone pitching in to save these endangered wolves.”

pring is starting to bloom across the state, and before things warm up too much, now is a perfect time to get out and see some of the more unique mustsee places across Arizona. Whether you are just looking for a day trip or something that may take a little bit more adventuring, here are a few areas worth checking out. Why not head to Benson and take a look at Kartchner Caverns? This Arizona State Park is a great location for the whole family to enjoy. With the world’s largest stalactite formation, Kartchner Caverns State Park is one of the state’s most popular outdoor activities, especially this time of year. You may want to hurry out there, however, if you want to catch a glimpse of the Big Room. This part of the Caverns will close mid-April through midOctober because it is a nursery roost for cave bats. Kartchner Caverns is located about 55 miles southeast of Tucson. www.azstateparks.com/parks/KACA. If you would rather head north of the Valley to check out something a little different, you can visit Montezuma Castle National

Monument near Camp Verde. These dwellings were built and originally used by the Sinagua people, which was a preColumbian culture much like the Hohokam Indians. These “castles” aren’t actually castles, but really more like prehistoric apartment living. Montezuma Castle National Park is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, except for Christmas. www.nps.gov/moca. Always wanted to see petrified wood? Head to Petrified Forest National Park. This landmark is located east of Holbrook, along Interstate 40. The Petrified Forest was declared a national monument back in 1906, and a national park in 1962. Nearly 600,000 people visit every year to hike, backpack, and sightsee. The park is open every day except Christmas, and times vary depending on the season. www.nps.gov/pefo. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

The dinosaurs may be long gone, but the signs of their existence are still with us. If you head out towards the Four Corners on Route 160, you will see signs for Dinosaur Tracks near Tuba City. The tracks have been viewed by thousands of tourists, as well as verified by paleontologists from Northern Arizona University. Tourists will find hundreds of the three-toed tracks that belong to the dilophosaurus, and which are forever preserved in the desert floor. If you head into Tuba City you can find a guide to the tracks, as well as other ruins in the area. Perhaps aerospace is more your thing. If so, head on down south to the Pima Air and Space Museum. Great for visitors of every age, the Air and Space Museum is a great location to learn about the history of flight and aircraft. The museum is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily (last admission is at 4 p.m.) every day except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. www.pimaair.org. Action! If you are hoping to take in a movie, or at least some film history, check out Old Tucson. You’ll step back in time at this Old West town, which has been made famous as the location of more than 300 movies and TV shows. Not only is Old Tucson great for film and entertainment buffs, but also those looking to relive the Western experience. There are daily history presentations and tours. Open 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. through the end of April. Hours will change in May. www.oldtucson.com.

S

exy, edgy, fun, whimsical, intriguing— those will be the hallmarks of the inaugural Mad Hauter celebration, set for April 25 on High Street. With this event, High Street turns up the heat and their block parties to another level of sophistication meets sexy. An event that is unlike any High Street has done in the past, they are raising the bar with a classy, top-notch, and definitely don’t-miss evening that will feature a fantastic sound and light show, a DJ, and an incredible fashion show. And best of all, proceeds from the Mad Hauter will benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. At this block party you can catch the Cheshire Cat Walk haute couture fashion show, which will showcase fashions from Fashion by Robert Black, and hats and wearable art from Cyndie Verity (Love something? Select hats and outfits will be available for purchase at the event!). There will also be a VIP “Tea Party,” The Caterpillars Hookah Lounge, hat-making stations (sponsored by Pinspiration), photo booths, a DJ music light show, and more. From the green turf croquet “fields” to the clocks everywhere that will be stuck at 6 p.m., to the large decks of cards, hedges and other fun details, you will be transported to another world. And of course, the event will feature food and drink, as well. Restaurants and bars will be selling items from vendor booths themed as the story (with servers dressed as the rabbit or decks of cards!), and there will also be food trucks. HAUTE HAPPENINGS

Exciting new venues opening on High Street Stores, restaurants, and of course, entertainment options (it is an entertainment destination, after all!) continue to open quickly on High Street, so we checked in with the center to find out what’s new and happening. Here’s the scoop.

Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill Promising an old-fashioned good time, this casual, come-as-youare restaurant and bar offers Southern American food with favorites such as its BBQ St. Louis Style Ribs and Whiskey Bottle New York Steak on the menu. Of course, there’s more than just good food here. You can grab a seat at the bar—which is shaped like a giant guitar!—and enjoy everything from beer and wine to specialty cocktails. There is also live country music, country dancing, and dancing Whiskey girls. And yes, Toby Keith fans, the restaurant’s name is a nod to Keith’s hit single from 2003. 5310 E. High St., St. 103, Phoenix; www.countrybarphoenix.com.

marble counter tops and dark wood stations, though the services offered—and service itself—is top-notch and as modern as can be, offering an old-fashioned experience in a sophisticated new manner. The barbershop offers top-quality cuts, straight razor shaves, cutting-edge products, and shoe shines for the modern man and his family. 5450 E. High St., Ste. 103; 602.441.4607; www. barbershopjack.com.

Barbershop Jack

Sandwhich shop Firehouse subs (5450 E. High St., Ste. 107) is another new locale that will be part of High Street’s lineup, joining Pinspiration, M3V and Sprouts Express, which also recently enjoyed successful openings. And with other fun destination announcements on the horizon, High Street is quickly being established as one of the hottest areas in town.

When you’re ready for a little grooming, this new full-service, upscale barbershop for men is the place to be. The décor offers a throwback to the 1950s with its chairs,

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Chef Jeremy McMillan of Bourbon Steak BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTO BY CARL SCHULTZ

YOU RECENTLY JOINED THE RESTAURANT AS A CHEF. WHAT INTRIGUED YOU ABOUT IT? I had been waiting on a great opportunity to come home and this was the one! I had a truly amazing time cooking in Napa and New York, met and worked for some incredible chefs, and spent time traveling and learning more about the food cultures of Argentina and Spain. Even with all those great things— travels and food—home is home. WHAT SETS BOURBON STEAK APART FROM OTHER STEAK LOCALES? The Princess and the format. The evolution of the Princess from when I was young to now is mind-blowing… it’s a truly amazing place and it isn’t stopping where it’s at. Also, Chef [Michael] Mina and the incredible team at the Mina Group offer up an innovative approach from the norm on a steakhouse. We have all the traditional menu offerings, along with a tasting menu of locally-sourced products, specialty side dishes, a robust wine list, fine dining service, and a modern setting, which makes for a diverse and memorable experience. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A CHEF? The first time I walked into a kitchen. It was 12 or 13 years ago, and the first time I peeled a potato as a job, I was hooked. Crazy and hooked. ANY TIP TO COOKING STEAK THAT YOU CAN SHARE? We use a very specific technique of slowpoaching our steaks in clarified butter to allow the fats to melt and the meat to tenderize without over-cooking or using a plastic bag. Really, the flavor is in the wood and the salt. Buy a great piece of meat, cover it in salt (literally) and cook it over charcoal or a wood fire. There is nothing better in the world. IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, YOU’D PROBABLY BE… A farmer. They work harder than any group of people I have ever known. They keep us happy and healthy—and they should be the stars of the food world. Without great produce and people who treat their soil like their children, my job is meaningless. Bourbon Steak is located at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, 7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale; 480.585.4848, ext. 7374; www.scottsdaleprincess.com.

THE CALABRIAN COLLINS

A great option for a hot day BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN

T

he Cove Trattoria recently unveiled its new spring cocktail menu, which included this Calabrian Collins, a twist on a traditional Collins drink. “A traditional Collins can be made from gin or vodka, but using tequila adds spice and smokiness to the cocktail,” explains Daryl Monica, the owner of the restaurant. The Cove Trattoria is a contemporary family-owned and operated Italian Trattoria, so it’s no surprise that they also put an Italian spin on the drink. “People like this cocktail because we add blood orange soda to it and that gives it a nice Italian flare,” Monica explains. In fact, the Calabrian Collins ($9.50) is created with Azuñia Tequila, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, blood orange soda, and Peychaud’s Bitters. The restaurant offers a diverse menu, with everything from hand-tossed pizzas to traditional Italian entrées to steak and pork loin. As for what to order along with this drink? “This cocktail can be paired with our Walnut and Pear Salad or our Garlic Verde Shrimp appetizer. It is a great refreshing cocktail that is perfect for the Arizona spring and summer months,” Monica says. 7001 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 184, Scottsdale; 480.951.8273; www.thecovescottsdale.com.

BY JIM PRUETER

here’s a sinister group of engineers at Chrysler Group. The SRT division has built the most powerful and fastest production V-8 vehicle in the world. I’m talking about the bigger codpiece, the hyperventilating 707-horsepower supercharged Challenger Hellcat—an insanely freak-you-out fast car. The 6.2-liter HEMI engine specializes in sprawling, grunting torque. On the road, the Hellcat’s power comes on in intense, linear gusts that rip across the tachometer, slamming through the eight-speed automatic transmission gears to triple digits in mere seconds. The standing ¼-mile takes just 11.2 seconds at 125 miles per hour on stock Pirelli street tires. A six-speed manual shifter is also available. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

SS_90_93Haute_Places_Want_Apr15.indd 92

92

I drove the Hellcat in both city and highway scenarios, as well as on a private racetrack. And while I had no intention of reaching the top speed of 204 mph, I did manage 155 mph on the straightaway. Using a wide-open throttle, the 18.5-gallon fuel tank will be sucked dry in just 13 minutes. Dodge also says the big supercharger moves so much air that it can pull all the air from a high-ceiling 8x10-foot office cubicle in a minute flat. While the government rates fuel economy at 13 mpg city/22 highway, be ready to pony up for gas. The best I achieved was just over 10 mpg. If burnouts are your thing, the Hellcat will light your Pirellis with a soundtrack akin to fighting pterodactyl. Keep in mind replacement tires are about $505 each. You’ll probably drive the Hellcat in a more civil manner, and it’s definitely well suited to cruise the streets in comfort without notice—unless, of course, it’s Sublime Green Pearl. If you can resist putting pedal-to-the-metal at every stoplight, it exhibits surprisingly good manners. The interior has been redone for 2015 and is noticeably improved in both materials and build quality. Outside, it is visually aggressive with the big front splitter, scooped flat-black aluminum hood, massive black wheels, and huge brakes. Obviously, all this goodness isn’t inexpensive, but for a muscle car that can reach 204 mph and comes with a five-year, 100,000-mile factory warranty, $60,000 is a bargain that doesn’t come along often. As for me, this is exactly the kind of car I want. I savor the foolishness it would bring to my otherwise sensible life. If anybody needs me, check Tent City… I don’t look good in pink. BRUNCH: TWICE AS GOOD AS LUNCH 5 great local spots where you can get your brunch on BY TARYN JEFFRIES

A

fter a long week, and perhaps a little revelry to celebrate the end of the workweek, be kind to yourself and sleep in. Roll out of bed as late as you can get away with, make yourself presentable, and then venture out into the world for the best meal invented: Brunch. Brunch first became popular in the U.S. in the 1930s as a way to replace the early Sunday supper, and has quickly evolved into something that friends and family look forward to all week. Brunch is relaxed, cheerful, and incredibly social. So gather your friends together and pick any one of these great locations and plan your next brunch.

The House Brasserie 6936 E. Main St., Scottsdale 480.634.1600; www.themissionaz.com

Old Town Scottsdale is rife with art and creativity, so it makes sense that the two meet on every plate at The House Brasserie. The House is, well, just that—a house re-envisioned, hearkening back to a simpler time when everyone wasn’t always in such a hurry. Pick a comfortable spot on the garden-like patio and enjoy the quiet and peace that the environment evokes. Any brunch spot can bring you a Bloody Mary and an omelet station, but brunch has evolved and the dishes on The House Brasserie’s brunch menu are definitely a step up from that long line of chafing dishes. Sure, they have scrambled eggs on the menu, but these are not your mom’s scrambled eggs (no offense to your mom). These eggs join together mascarpone, ricotta, prosciutto, asparagus, black pepper and Parmesan all in one delightful dish that will forever change the way you look at eggs. Looking for a little sweetness? Don’t miss out on the Dutch Pancake, a delightfully light cake that provides a vehicle to meld together the complex flavors of Pink Lady Apples, Wilcox Cider, maple, lemon and huckleberry crème fraiche. There is also a wide variety of salads and sandwiches to choose from. Bruch is served from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sat. and Sun.

Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley 602.955.7878; www.hermosainn.com/lons

Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn is known as almost a love story to the history of Arizona. Originally the home of famed artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, who kept building on the property. It evolved from his home to an art studio, and then to a working ranch open to guests from around the world. The property in its present form still features Lon’s art peppered throughout the resort as a tribute to the man who started it all. While certain aspects of the resort have changed to match the times, one thing that remains pure is the focus on the Southwest—and that plays well into the flavors in the dishes that Chef Ducas creates at Lon’s. The one-acre organic garden certainly helps to ensure that all of the dishes include the freshest of ingredients. Meals like their Crab Cake Benedict will wildly exceed your expectations. To start, try the Crab Cakes. The sweet crab flavor comes through, and the tomato jam, fresh micro cilantro salad, and saffron citrus aioli create a contrast of sweet, tart and crisp flavors. And, when you break into that airy poached egg allowing the velvety yolk to come through, well, there’s no better dish to start the day with. Plus, they have Monkey Bread. Brunch is available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sat. and Sun.

Bink’s Scottsdale 6107 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 480.664.9238; www.binksscottsdale.com

Chef Kevin Binkley is changing the landscape of dining in the Valley with a total of four restaurants… for now. Those at Bink’s

focus on the bounty of the area when they create contemporary dishes that are sophisticated and artistic. While the brunch menu here may not be extensive, the items offered are masterfully crafted and will be as much a work of art on a plate as they are an explosion of flavor. One dish not to miss is the Eggs Benedict. I realize a Benedict is typical brunch fodder, but when you incorporate Applewood smoked pork belly, you’ll find a dish that has been infused with love and peppered with happiness. You’ll want to have this dish for every meal. Every single one. Brunch is available from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Sun.

The Herb Box 7134 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale, or 20707 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale 480.289.6160 or 480.289.6180; www.theherbbox.com

I think that the most important thing that one should know about The Herb Box is that Martha Stewart ate brunch here and actually asked Chef Becky Windels about the preparation of one of her dishes, the Kale Pakora. The Kale Pakora is a delightful little fried pocket comprised of kale, sweet onion and corn, and is served with a serrano glaze and vegan yellow pepper aioli. It’s been said a few places that she might know a thing or two about great food and presentation. Another great brunch option is the Baby Kale, Brie & Green Apple Omelet. You know that Brie and apple make a prefect pair, but who knew that adding in some healthy kale, coffee-molasses glazed bacon, and a side of wheat toast could taste so good? The result is a protein- and vitamin-packed breakfast that will help get you through the last of those weekend chores you need to get to. Brunch is available from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sun.

Virtù Honest Craft 3701 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale 480.946.3477; www.virtuscottsdale.com

Virtù Honest Craft is a deceptive little spot. Tucked away from all of the noise and hubbub that can sometimes be synonymous with Old Town Scottsdale, you’ll quickly feel like you’re miles away. The restaurant is the ground floor of the Bespoke Inn, a quaint hotel that is big on charm. Chef Gio Osso and Virtù have received a lot of notoriety from a variety of nationwide publications stating what we already knew—that this is a can’t-miss spot when in Scottsdale. There are no gimmicks or bells and whistles here, and they aren’t needed. The food stands on its own and much like a photo, is worth a thousand words. The presentation of the dishes is often breathtaking. The brunch menu here changes with the availability of fresh ingredients, but you’ll always find crepes on the menu. The Classic Crepe, created with ham and gruyere, is in perfect proportion to its huge flavor. The slight saltiness of the ham combined with the creamy cheese provides great mouthfeel. The Burrata with spicy poached eggs is a great way to wake up your taste buds with the kick of the eggs, and the creaminess of the burrata in contrast with the texture of the peperonata and potato hash. Brunch here is available daily from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

ore and more, smart restaurants in the Valley are turning to locally grown products–and using the ingredients beyond just dinner menus. “For us, creating both food and drink menus spotlighting local products is two-fold,” says Brian Leeds of Proof, An American Canteen at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. “It allows us the chance to offer our guests the opportunity to experience Arizona using all five of their senses, and it also gives us a chance to not only support, but brag about the amazing farmers,

distillers and winemakers in our own backyard.” In addition, according to Leeds, since the items do not travel long distances, chemicals are not needed to preserve them, which means the consumer gets the freshest, most natural end product. There is no better time than spring to sip and savor from a myriad of cocktail options featuring local produce, and even locally developed spirits from right here in the Valley. Here are some of our favorites.

t is obvious, at least to restaurant owner German Osio, that culinary and dietary trends are changing today. “People are more cautious about what they are eating. I’ve noticed a drastic shift in my existing restaurants where people are ordering healthier and cleaner options, and ultimately we decided to come up with this quick eating concept,” he explains. And like that, Kale & Clover was born. The restaurant, which is open seven days a week, does not have any microwaves, no butter, and no processed foods—and everything served to patrons is made in-house. This includes all of the coldpressed juices, smoothies, nut milks, and more. They even make their own syrups for the coffee program to ensure that there are no additives. The restaurant also features locally sourced beer and wine. “It was extremely important to me to design a menu that would attract everyone,” says Osio. “There are vegetarian options, vegan options, and options for the meat-eaters. You can add components and variety to any dish, and we

hope that people with any size appetite will enjoy them all.” Kale & Clover is also looking to help the next generation learn about clean and healthy eating with its Kids Menu and upcoming lunchbox program. These include well-balanced and nutritional lunch options that parents and families can come in and pick up for their kids to take to school. “We want to make it fun for kids, while also ensuring it tastes good and is healthy,” proclaims Osio. “We make sure kids will have options we hope they will

enjoy such as fruits, almond butter and jelly, turkey paninis, and cold-pressed juices.” Parents need not to worry about the sugary options in soda either, as the restaurant doesn’t even make that an option—they only offer sparkling water with fruit. Osio says his love for food and love of a great meal began at an early age. “The passion of restaurants has been with me for as long as I can remember. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to do anything else. For me, cooking is a hobby, it’s my career, it’s my passion. I really enjoy cooking and creating concepts. I have known since I was young that I wanted to be in the hospitality business. It’s all I’ve ever known,” he says. Kale & Clover is open from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. daily, and Osio is making plans to expand this concept across the Valley. Right now, this North Scottsdale location is the only one; however, Osio hopes to open four more locations in the Valley this year. 20511 N. No-Drain Tummy-Tuck Dr. Nachbar has been offering a No-Drain Tummy-Tuck since 2008 to help women who have developed bulging and looseness in their abdomen due to causes such as pregnancy or weight loss. An ordinary Tummy-Tuck requires a drain to remove fluid buildup that would otherwise occur under the tissue that has been tightened. Usually, the drain is left for two to three weeks, causing skin irritation, discomfort and an opportunity for bacteria to enter. Even when the drain is removed, fluid collection (seroma) can occur requiring needle sticks. If the drain is removed earlier than three weeks, the risk of seroma becomes greater. That is why Dr. Nachbar uses a more advanced technique, including up to 40 extra sutures to eliminate the space where fluid would collect. It is more complicated, and takes a little longer, but his patients love the no-drain tube technique. To find out if a No-Drain Tummy Tuck is right for you, call and schedule a complimentary consultation.
