Christine Tobin: Sailing to Byzantium

The Old Dance School

3pm RNCM Concert Hall

7.30pm RNCM Studio Theatre

Manchester Literature Festival Sailing to Byzantium is an evocative collection of 12 poems by W B Yeats set to music by the Irish singer-songwriter and BBC award-winning jazz vocalist Christine Tobin. The poems range from Yeats’ early work through to his final collection, from love poems such as When you are old, to works that chart his desire to find a deeper spiritual truth, as in the epic Sailing to Byzantium. Joined by a stellar quartet featuring Phil Robson on guitar, cellist Kate Shortt, pianist Liam Noble and Dave Whitford on double bass, Christine and her ‘24 carat voice’ (as described by The Guardian) bring great warmth and luminosity to Yeats’ poetry through these inspired settings. We’re delighted to welcome RNCM alumnus Christian Blackshaw back to the College for the latest in his series of Mozart Sonata recitals, which have been receiving rave reviews across the country. The Financial Times described his January Wigmore Hall performance as ‘exceptional - both for the quality and integrity of his playing’ and pinpointed ‘a kaleidoscope of feeling’ that Blackshaw unleashed in Mozart’s often underestimated music for solo piano.
