EDITORIAL Ovidio Guaita, Editor-in-Chief

ll things considered, there are only two kinds of men in the world – those that stay at home and those that do not”. That was a reflection made by the British writer Rudyard Kipling at the end of the 19th century. He most definitely belonged to the second group, as I believe you, our readers, do too. Especially at this time of year.

We hope to discover. At the end of the day, discovery, with everything that goes with it – amazement, interest, deeper understanding, learning – is the main reason to travel. A place, an encounter a flavour, a situation which justify the effort, the expense and the time taken in reaching a new destination. This edition contains many suggestions of places in Europe to help our readers enjoy the summer in the Old Continent. A classic choice that is always full of fascination, and always up with the times. And – talking of classics – here’s a stay at the Raffles Le Royal in Phnom Penh: colonial, oriental, and quite simply unique. As always, we only recommend the best, places that our correspondents have personally visited and tested… specially for “those who don’t stay at home”.

Go beyond your expectations with Resorts Magazine!

HOTEL COLONIALI

Dal Settecento fino alla seconda guerra mondiale. Due secoli di lusso ai tropici, tra ventilatori a pale, verande, tè pomeridiani e stuoli di servitori. eautiful. Intimate. Combining grace, elegance and excellent service. And on top of all this, the Hotel de Rome breathes tranquillity, despite its location in the heart of Berlin. The historic and majestic building, which goes back to 1889 and was previously the headquarters of a bank, has kept its exterior architectural lines intact, while giving space inside to modern designs by Tommaso Ziffer and Olga Polizzi, the sister of Sir Rocco Forte. An ambassador of luxury of the Rocco Forte brand, the Hotel de Rome takes a new look at hospitality, with great attention paid to décor and choice of materials. The spacious rooms and suites are extremely contemporary, but don’t lack classical touches. The Spa de Rome provides a haven for relaxation. Created from the bank vault, the spa is an oasis of calm, featuring a large, 20 meters long, swimming pool. Food is just as important. At La Banca restaurant, directed by Fulvio Pierangelini – a chef with numerous Michelin stars – the executive chef Jörg Beherend produces original cuisine based on products which have been produced with technique and creativity, creating a menu which brings out the best in authentic Italian cuisine. The Hotel de Rome in Berlin has been conceived so as to satisfy all needs: an enclave of luxury, which is attentive to those small details which make a difference.

he Buddha-Bar Hotel, just a few steps away from the Old Town Square so strongly imbued with the character of Mitteleuropa, is an unusual place in magical Prague. From the lobby on, the tone is quickly set by the design in which oriental tones predominate: a harmonic blend of rare efficiency which irresistibly attracts the eye. It gently introduce guests into the sensory universe of the fascinating rooms of the Buddha-Bar Hotel Prague. The eclectic style. The large spaces. The sophisticated and intimate atmosphere. The meeting of Asian philosophy and modern technology. The skilful lighting effects. These are some of the special touches which this Prague boutique hotel has to offer. In the rooms, warm colours are playfully combined with an atmosphere that verges on the mystic: like a tuning fork whose vibrations continually seduce the guest. The modern design re-examines themes from Asian colonial style. And the suites dedicated to Buddha, Sangha and Dharma are three pearls of class, perfection and harmony. The menu of the Siddharta CafĂŠ is inventive and delicious, celebrating in the best possible way the infinite possibilities of fusion between the flavours of the East and the West in a playful, Pop Art environment. The Buddha Bar Hotel steps off the beaten path with the touch of a master, by mixing the two spirits of great hospitality: modern functionality and the perfection of a dream world.

| SLAVONIA

Our journey allows us to discover Mitteleuropa classicism through a slow modernity, in which times are set by the flow of nature. The grand southern offshoots of the Pannonian plain accompany us, led by the tall spire of the “Katedrala”, along the route to reach Osijek. Settled on the southern bank of the Drava river, just before it joins the Danube, Osijek immediately appeals to us with its Baroque, fortified heart. In the geometrical Holy Trinity Square, the interesting Museum of Slavonia is worth a visit.

Going along the Drava, we then reach the old city, with its elegant Art Nouveau buildings and the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Mitteleuropa architecture and natural parks are the two elements which guide our visit to Slavonia. A land that is modelled by the flow of its three great rivers: the Sava, the Drava and the Danube. The experience of travelling through the mosaic of Slavonia continues to Đakovo. Architectural traits are a good witness to the historical legacy here: the ancient Ottoman mosque of Ibrahim Pasha transformed into the All Saints’ Church; the breeding of horses that were first Arab, then carthorses and then – since the 19th century – Lipizzaners; the majestic neo-Gothic cathedral. Another important witness to this cultural crossroads can be found at the admirable neoclassical residence of Našice, which is linked to the Croatian composer Dora Pejačević.

By the end of our journey in Slavonia among landscapes, oases of biodiversity and cultural testaments to a rich history, we are convinced that eastern Croatia’s extremely long story has now turned around. There is a fresh desire to welcome guests, which means that travellers looking for something different in a destination can be offered an invigorating and stimulating break, in a place outside time.

ROVI

Paolo Gerbaldo

This historical town has adapted to contemporary life style without betraying its roots.

NJ We are talking of Rovigno/ Rovinj, a charming pearl in Croatia.

SPECIAL | ROVINJ

This corner of paradise of the Istrian peninsula is dominated by the XVIIIth century church of Sant’Eufemia which adds the finishing touch to an evocative view: a place in which landscape and Venetian-style architecture blend beautifully. The numerous islets which surround the town a short distance from the coastline create a poetic space. The panoramic view from the peninsula onto the Adriatic, dotted with the green islands, with its rows of continuous linked houses, are in themselves worthy of the journey. One of the elements which one appreciates most on arrival is the huge window looking out onto the sea. The building, over several floors, rests against the hillside. The tall window thus provides a sea view from the reception, the bar and the restaurants. The rooms also all have a view of the bay. The contemporary style of the building is clear from the futuristic cover projecting from the entrance. Tradition and modernity alternate to perfection to create precious pages in the area’s restaurants: elegant and rising modern cuisine, based on quality ingredients and above all, naturally, local fish. For an unforgettable romantic evening, the Lanterna restaurant, situated in an old castle on the small island of Sant’Andrea, will not to disappoint. The Konoba Kantinon, alongside the Marina, on the other hand is the perfect solution for anzone who wants to add local atmosphere and flavours to the view. Rovigno is a part of Croatia which inspires harmony and peace.
