he advent of personalized medicine is changing how we treat our patients. With new ways to identify molecular and genetic characteristics, the Columbia University Thoracic Surgery and Oncology team work to prevent, diagnose and treat lung cancer better than ever before. Our program is a national leader in using less invasive methods for tissue biopsy and diagnosis, and these tests allow us to guide patients into therapies and clinical trials based on their genetic factors. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah! It’s a great time of year – full of eating, celebrating and being thankful for what we have. It’s been a full and productive year for the Resident. And we couldn’t be happier. I hope you’ve seen changes to the title. We’ve given a facelift to our publication and have worked hard to increase our visibility in the community; we hope you’ve noticed and appreciated these changes. Except to see even bigger moves starting in January. For December, we have the legendary broadcast journalist, Ernie Anastos. He sat down with us to do both an exclusive photo shoot (thanks to Getty for their help) and interview. It was like being with the master and I was the novice (which is the truth); I was his young grasshopper. But, he was more than congenial and good-hearted. Both my creative director and for letting us shoot at 101 E. 63 Street. It’s a gem of a property and they should be very proud that they are representing it. Robert Cuccioli, the famed Broadway actor is also editorialized. His debut album, The Look of Love, is on shelves. I happened to get a copy and loved every minute of it. He was generous and it was great to speak with him. Catch him as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark. Our third interview of the month is Joseph Maddalena. The star of the reality-docu series, Hollywood Treasures on the Syfy channel, he was an interesting interviewee. He collects objects from movie lore. It’s quite fascinating and we thank him for his time. What would the Resident be without our strong and varied travel content? From Chile, Madrid, Maui, Caribbean getaways, Florence and Boca Raton, we’ve got it covered. We send out only the top journalists to travel. Dining is also heavily featured. From Italian, French and New American, we are uniquely positioned to bring you the best of the best. The arts, including the NY Philharmonic, are represented and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Lastly, thanks to everyone that attended our event on November 7th! It was a great success and we were even mentioned on Page Six in the NY Post. Best,

Christopher A. Pape Editor-in-Chief christopherp@resident.com

This is Ernie Anastos. By Christopher A. Pape Photography by: Getty Images/Theo Wargo

The pressure of being the font of information in this city is intense. But it is a responsibility that Ernie Anastos does with circumspection and with a smile. After all, he is New York. Forever synonymous with our fair metropolis, Mr. Anastos has enjoyed recognition and success beyond which many achieve. Now in his third decade of anchoring, Ernie is excited to present a new show that he’s hosting called “Positively Ernie.” A new concept, which revolves around the reporting on and celebrating of positive news stories, the show is set to be a success. And Ernie couldn’t be happier. He sat down with us for an exclusive photo shoot and chat. What resulted was a wide-ranging discussion from his love of ties to what his full Greek name is. It was evident that Mr. Anastos is proud of his achievements and especially of exploring new territory with “Positively Ernie.” We thank him for his time and hope you like the piece as much as I liked interviewing him.

Resident

Resident (R): Thank you for doing a photo shoot with us today! Ernie Anastos: I liked doing something different. We had a lot of options and I liked the fact that I didn’t wear a tie. As you may know, wearing a tie is my signature and it was very comfortable to go without one. R: Okay. You’ve got me. How did a tie become your signature? EA: I have always had a passion for ties. I have so many that I don’t even want to tell you how many… it’s in the hundreds. I have been on the air for so many years, 34 in New York City and I just started collecting them.

Resident December 2012

A tie’s color is very important because it sets the tone of my personality. I am very careful about my selection; I don’t go overboard; viewers appreciate them. In fact, I gave a few away on the air as part of a charitable giving drive. We gave away several ties with a personal label on it and it was a good thing to do because every time a tie was placed, I made a contribution to St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, which feeds the hungry. The organization provides 1.5 million meals a year to needy familes in New York. Clearly, then the ties have become a signature and if I go into a store I just sort of lose myself; I start looking at the ties and the When I am traveling I am always looking for one that hasn’t been worn before. They are my obession and I love it! R: You talked about being in New York for 34 years; can you talk about the process of getting into the media business?

EA: I started very early in life; I was probably 10 years old when I used to sit under the kitchen table listening to the radio. I’d turn the volume low when the announcer was speaking, pretending I was a disc jockey and when the music would come back on I would turn the volume back up again. I had wires and speakers all over the house and I would make my parents listen to me; they had to listen - they were a captivated audience. This went on until I was at least 13 years old.

there working as a weekend announcer. I would sign the radio station on and off, morning till night. I worked at the radio station while I was a student at Northeastern University in Boston. As an aside, several years ago, I started investing in radio stations. I bought ten of them in upstate New York and in the New England area. One of the stations that about coming full circle. Later, I sold it to the governor of New Hampshire.

I had a teacher who was very encouraging. One day I asked: “Mrs. Ryan, how do you know what career to choose?” She was so sweet, she replied, “Whatever you enjoy doing will be the avenue to your success; so do what you love.”

Back to the main story, eventually, I came to New York as a desk assistant for CBS and carried news copy for Walter Cronkite. Eventually, I decided I wanted to be on the air and I knew I would have to make a change. I landed a job as a newscaster in Boston at WRKO, the number one radio

So when I was 16 I went to the local radio station; I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire. I knocked on the door and spoke with the program director and asked

anything I could do to be involved with the station? He liked my voice and had me read some news. He must have been impressed because he offered me a job hosting a teenage talk show on Saturday mornings.

I wanted to make a break into television so I started applying to different places and it was hard to get your foot in the door because back then there weren’t all of the outlets we have today. Finally, I landed a job in Rhode Island at WPRI TV.

great value for money!

Shortly after I was on the air, people started knocking on my door. The offers were in different markets and I chose New York because my relatives was all here. The rest is history.

comfortable here, because it’s the whole world in one city.

R: What stations have you worked at in the city?

EA: Everything. If I start naming all the restaurants…I like a lot of the Greek restaurants. I love going out to dinner; I like the range of options. You name the cuisine we have it. I know one thing; my picture is up in all of the diners because Greeks own so many of them. They are all very proud.

EA: In 1978, I was hired by WABC, Channel 7, Eyewitness News. I did the weekend anchoring. Three months later they named me the 11 o’clock news anchor. I took over with Rose Ann Scamardella (the inspiration for SNL’s Roseanne Roseannadanna). I spent eleven years there and as fate would have it, I was made an offer from WCBS that I couldn’t refuse. I left on good terms and had a great time at CBS. I was there for ten years. I moved over to Channel 9, WWOR – it’s the same company now as FOX 5. I’ve been with FOX 5 for seven years. R: You’ve moved onto something a little different at Fox 5; can you tell us about that? EA: Many people have been upset about the coverage of the news; it’s so negative and disturbing. Everywhere I’ve gone, people have asked if they could get news that is more positive. In an effort to confront that need, I wrote a children’s book called “Ernie and the Big Newz.” It revolved around the book delivered engaging news stories with positive endings. The colorful illustrations were the work of Bill Gallo, the late legendary cartoonist for the New York Daily News. A spin off of that book was to create this new program called “Positively Ernie.” It has created a forum for people to be able to hear the advances in our world; everything people should be hearing that shows the world is not falling apart. We are doing four shows, on Saturdays, starting December 1st at The show will feature compelling stories and helpful information about actions and choices that make a real difference in people’s lives. America’s favorite medical expert, Dr. Oz, will be on every episode. He talks about the power of an optimistic attitude. Both he and I are dedicated to reinforcing a positive message with this new program. It’s my hope that my program will bring life and meaning to the work of America’s volunteer and how we all can make a difference. I recently delivered a speech on civility in the media and I am respectfully asking my colleagues at local television stations across America to join me in reporting on positive news. R: What does it mean to be New Yorker? EA: I have always been a New Yorker – always. When I came here as a child I knew I belonged here. I love the dynamics and diversity of the city. As I matured, I was able to appreciate it even more. I like the uniqueness; I like the people. I feel

R: What do you do for fun in the city?

I love the Museum of Natural History – I’m a big fan of Teddy Roosevelt. The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum are also my favorites. I love concerts; Broadway is fabulous. I can go shopping and not buy anything and still have an amazing time. R: Everyone knows you as Ernie Anastos, but what is your full Greek name? EA: I was named after my grandfather. He was a pioneer in the Greek Orthodox Church hundred ordained priests. His name was Anastasious Anastasiou. My father abbreviated our family name to Anastos. My grandfather was very important to me; he left me many beautiful books. He was tall, had a white beard, shocking white hair. He had a strong voice and shared his family vaolues with all of us. My grandfather respected everyone; respected mankind. He believed we all have a purpose.

Dr. Oz Says: “I applaud Ernie for shining light on the subjects that matter most to us, but most of all, for giving us hope.” Resident

The Legend of Sanibel, Florida The first European landed on our shores about 500 years ago. Columbus whet Spain’s appetite for exploration. He dreamed of reaching Asia by sailing west, but he needed funding. Queen Isabella denied him three times; finally she declared “I will assume the undertaking for my own crown of Castile, and am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it, if the funds in the treasury should be found inadequate.” In 1492 Columbus’ ships landed in the Bahamas and he claimed them for Spain. His expedition continued on to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Columbus returned to the Spanish court with natives and gold, exaggerating the significance of all he had found. Historians believe he was accompanied by Juan Ponce de León on his second expedition. When rumors of gold surfaced, Juan was given permission to find it. When he heard tales of a fountain of youth, he looked for that too. Around the time of Easter celebrations, he landed in a beautiful place he named Pascua Florida – Spanish for feast or festival of flowers. He continued exploring Florida’s coast and named Sanibel “SanYbel” after Saint Isabella of Portugal – the patron saint of brides.”

I tried living in L.A. It wasn’t my bag so I came home. I have a passion for the city. R: Where in the city do you live?

R: What does it mean to be a New Yorker?

RC: On the upper end of the theatre district and I absolutely love it. I’ve seen the area change a lot over the years. It’s hardly Hell’s Kitchen any longer. I love its vigor, not to mention its restaurants!

RC: I love the energy of New York, the vibrancy. It drives and inspires me.

R: Tell us about your experience with SPIDER-MAN, TURN OFF THE DARK. RC: The music is fun and I play a great dual

role, Dr. Norman Osborn and his alter ego, “The Green Goblin.” I am very happy to be back on Broadway. And I love to have an audience to perform for every night. R: How is it to be an Italian-American? Do you connect with your heritage? RC: I am very proud to be an ItalianAmerican. I am proud of my name and, at one point, some former business agents of mine wanted me to change it. I wouldn’t do it because it’s my identity and it’s who I am.

Go out and buy Robert’s debut album, The Look of Love. I couldn’t stop listening to it. His voice is a mix of Broadway, jazz and cabaret. It’s at once silky, smooth and passionately strong. It’s a great stocking stuffer for those that love good music and I recommend it without reservation.

t one point in the not too distant future Florida was the winter playground of the wealthy. It was easy to get to and had as wide a variety of accommodations as any place in the world. Things are different today. From JFK, LaGuardia or even nearby Newark Liberty International Airport the islands of the Caribbean are literally only a hop, skip and jump away with most reachable within The islands strung out from the tip of Puerto Rico to the northern coast of South America have become affordable and are a prime destination offering accommodations ranging from deluxe hotels and resorts to unique campgrounds bringing luxury to the outdoors.

Located just outside the Puerto Rican city of Ponce, the Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort can easily lay claim to being one of the prime, if not the prime, resorts on the island. Most guests arrive through Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan and than transport the 75 miles to Ponce, saving the two hour drive. The Hilton is situated in a lush palm grove on a 74-acre property that seems to go on forever. It offers 255 beautiful guests rooms in the main area and more luxury in the attached 100 units of the Executive Tower, all with private balcony. For those so inclined there is a 27-hole Costa Caribe championship golf course designed by Bruce A. Besse Jr. and

Rico. The views of the Caribbean Sea are spectacular enough to take your mind off your drive swing. The resort offers a host of amenities and several exceptional restaurants, prime among them La Cava, with some of the best food on the island. There is a casino, park for entertaining the younger set during family vacations. For information check out: www.ponce.hilton.com *Rates at this upscale resort are surprising inexpensive making it a great destination for families as well as business meetings and conventions.

BACKWATER CRUISE IN INDIA’S We arrived to a rain shower in Cochin. It was the second monsoon season in Kerala, one of India’s southern states, when each afternoon brings a few hours of rain. We drove south, first along busy roads of Cochin’s suburbs, lined with flashy roadside ads and car dealerships. As we veered off the main strip and into the back roads, the surroundings became more lush and scenic, offering glimpses of the waterways through dense foliage. We were, quite clearly, in the tropics. But just days before we had baked in the desert of Rajasthan, touring forts and mausoleums of Agra and Jaipur in sweltering sun. Micato Safaris, our

thoughtful and India-savvy host for the trip, had India’s contrasts in mind. We had to travel far to get to the subcontinent, so why not show us the north and the south in one fell swoop? It was a pairing at once intense and yet so seamless. Looking back, I wouldn’t do it any other way. After a couple of hours’ drive, a great welcome awaited us at the Vembanad Lake jetty – fresh towels, a signature bindi painted on our foreheads, a flower garland and fresh coconut water. Here, we were to board the Vrinda, the backwater cruiser by the luxury Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, which takes guests on a unique meander through Kerala’s waterways. Vrinda would be our home for the next three nights.

A TALE OF

TWO CITIES By Richard C. Murray and Laurie Heifetz

Beautiful Boca When most people see the name Boca Raton, their immediate interpretation is rat’s mouth. Even longtime residents are off target as to the true meaning. In Spanish, boca, or mouth, often refers to an inlet. And raton means mouse, as in Ratón Mickey, or Mickey Mouse. Furthermore, the original rocky inlet was actually Biscayne Bay, located many miles south of Boca Raton, but over time people have curiously applied the name to Lake Boca Raton. We stayed at the historic Boca Raton Resort & Club (BRR&C). The sweeping views

Resident November 2012

The resort boasts lakes, a marina, art installations, an 18-hole golf course, 36 tennis courts, swimming pools, a spa and meticulously-manicured grounds. The cordial employees at this resort make it one

The sagacious visitor should visit the Boca Raton Historical Society. From its 18 farmers in 1903 to a current population of 80,000, Boca’s history is enthralling. We took in the exhibits of the collections of Addison Mizner, the famed architect-owner of the Boca Resort & Hotel, the forerunner of the BRR&C.

The charming shops, art gallery and dining options top off the seductiveness. When you are at Cielo restaurant, be sure to try the tasty Spicy Meatball appetizer, a combination of short ribs, brisket and chuck.

A trip to Boca would not be complete without spending some time in the beautiful Mizner Park. Not far from the Historical Society, this entertainment, dining and cultural hub is the home to the 44,000-square-foot Boca Raton Museum of Art. Go, and you’ll be impressed with it all.

breathtaking.

Delightful Delray Delray Beach won the “Most Fun Small Town in the United States” award this past summer by Rand McNally/USA Today entrants. Atlantic Avenue is Delray’s main strip and the primary reason for winning the trophy. A virtual never-ending party, downtown Delray is bustling with clubs, restaurants, boutiques, quaint shops and cafes. “Florida’s Village by the Sea” also has a burgeoning art scene. Established art galleries occupy the strip and warehouses are clustered in quiet, out-of-the-way places like Artists Alley. One of the highlights of our visit was the Intracoastal Waterway cruise aboard the Lady Atlantic yacht. Prominently situated on Atlantic Avenue, Delray Yacht Cruises offers a two-and-one-quarter-hour sightseeing adventure narrated by a witty and knowledgeable captain.

We tested our miniature-golf skills at the exhibit “Big Art: Miniature Golf.” Eleven playable golf holes designed by artists from eight different states illuminate a large area. Ranging from offbeat to garish, the museum supplies everyone with putter and golf ball. The “Golf in the Swamp with John Muir” hole by Miami artists Charles Falarara and book, “A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf,” in which he describes his journeys through on the artists. Tip: Aim for the alligator’s mouth to sink the put! It’s as much fun for adults as it is for children.

We photographed umpteen multi-million dollar, oceanfront mansions inhabited by the rich and famous. We also learned where the mother of comedian Jerry Seinfeld lives. He refers to his parents’ retirement community on “Seinfeld” and in his nightclub act as being in Del Boca Vista, Florida. Please The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is one our favorite attractions in the world. The outdoor gardens, Roji-en Japanese Gardens (Garden of the Drops of Dew) are rigorously raked and pruned throughout the day. The bonsai garden has many varieties of miniature trees, and the bamboo-tree grove seemed surreal. Morikami also has two museum buildings. Its Cornell Cafe was featured on The Food Network. The woven Japanese purses and wallets will really catch your eye at the unusual gift shop.

The outdoor sculpture garden is anchored by the bronze sculpture, Labyrinth Man. The huge, green-and-white man, by Italian artist Rabarama (Paola Epifani) keeps a gaze on the other installations. After working up an appetite, we were ready to hit one of Mizner Park’s many eateries. During our transfer from the airport, our limousine driver recommended Max’s Grille. Who can argue with a limo driver? As soon as we entered this American bistro we were impressed with the modern decor and hip ambience. Long-time manager John Mazza sat down with us and chit-

The immaculately-clean Crane’s BeachHouse Hotel & Tiki Bar is the quintessential tropical retreat. From the moment we entered our suite, it was evident why it won the prestigious Donal A. Dermody White Glove Award for housekeeping excellence. After trying out the two saltwater pools, we ventured across the street to the beautiful beach with warm Atlantic currents. Later we walked along Atlantic Avenue to savor the nightlife and buy t-shirts. We recommend Upscale Boca and quaint Delray impart their own unique identities. The Impossible Perfection of

Il Salviatino By Narbeh Minassian

Il Salviatino is a hotel of delightful contradictions. Its very location combines two worlds into one, with a rural surrounding so tranquil and so green yet with the buzzing urban energy of Downtown Florence just look like a contemporary hotel, it is actually a handrestored 15th century villa; offering all the luxury and grandeur of a modern boutique but also all the timeless charm and atmosphere of an antique villa. What I can recommend and even insist upon, is to resist the temptation of staying in the rooms for a long time, as easy as that would be, because the hotel is located in a part of Europe where there is simply too much to see and to do. As the ‘Athens of the Middle Ages’ and as the city that is considered by many to be one of the birthplaces of the Renaissance, it is no surprise that Florence is a huge attraction for art lovers. But beyond art, it is one of the most beautiful places in Europe and perhaps the world. The two most famous art galleries are owned by the Medici family in the 16th century. Even if art is not up your street, you can’t fail to be thoroughly in awe of the architecture. Manhattan’s skyscrapers are

one thing, but Florence’s blend of the archaic and the modern brings together what makes for a skyline for all times- literally! The Hotel provides guests with a complementary shuttle service to the heart of this historic city, or, if preferred, private cabs can be arranged. The sheer scale of interest in Florence is enough to wear you out, leaving you in need of some relaxation. While the idyllic and pastoral setting of the hotel in the beautiful gardens radiates its own relaxing vibes -particularly with a swimming pool situated in the center of one of the aforementioned gardens- the hotel’s spa is the best place to unwind in arguably the whole of Tuscany. This is where Il Salviatino’s renowned service marries the beauty of its setting. The Spa plays host to Dr Vranjes, which is one of Florence’s most exclusive perfume houses;

This pride in Florentine history and culture has found its way into Il Salviatino, with the management and the employees taking the utmost pride in providing outstanding service in outstanding measure. A trip to this hotel is to experience time travel without leaving 2012, to experience the countryside and the city, all under the banner of luxury and hospitality. BY SARAH SEKULA The Atacama Desert is the driest place on earth; I have the hiking boots filled with red dust to prove it. Nevertheless, it’s also one of the most alluring places around. Think flamingo-filled salt flats, multicolored lagoons and hot springs galore.

Nature Calls Day 1-3: Calama to start your all-inclusive journey at Tierra Atacama (tierraatacama.com). It’s a family-owned, 32-room boutique hotel created by the Purcell family, owners of Ski Portillo, one of Chile’s most famous ski resorts. Like Portillo, Tierra Atacama is all about sharing it’s nearby geological wonders. In other words, you bask in nature and then come back to indoor comforts each day. (The perfect combo, if you ask me.) Outside: It’s galvanized metal and sandblasted glass next to adobe and shale. Inside: It’s long communal tables painted robin’s egg blue. In other words, the midcentury modern design is done just right. Settle into your room, and glance at the snowcapped Licancabur Volcano from your private terrace. Next, meet with your adventure concierge, who is about to kick the fun factor up a notch. You’ll plot it out on the giant, hand-painted map and have sweet dreams until the cool desert air greets you in the morning.

One thing’s certain, with the comforts of this hotel, you can be downright sloth-like for days on end. However, the real celebrity here is the topography. To-do list: Scale one of the eight nearby volcanoes, photograph Moon Valley (which closely resembles Mars) and visit the Tatio Geysers. Since you are still jet lagged, start slowly with a hike to the Puritama Hot Springs. Pass by pampas grass and cacti before making your way to the bottom of a steep-sided gorge. Here, you have your pick of eight natural

Your llama! Day 4-5: Wake before the sun does. It’s time to tackle El Tatio geysers where you’ll see huge steam columns spew 40 feet in the air. A delightful Chilean breakfast is served as dawn breaks. On the way back to the village, be on the lookout. Chinchillas, vicuñas (a relative of the llama) and Andean ostrich frequent the area. Be sure to stop in the hamlet of Machuca where snacks come in the form of barbecued The perfect pit stop. By now you deserve a detox afternoon at Uma Spa (Uma means “water” in the local Aymará language). Here, your lucky limbs get slathered with volcanic mud and you can soak in a private, Turkish hot tub. Enjoy a dinner of grilled mahimahi with quinoa; you’ll need some extra protein for what comes next.

Soak it up Day 6-7: After acclimatizing for several days it’s time to push yourself a little, and trek your way to the top of El Toco, an extinct volcano. The is worth it: You’ll spot the Bolivian Altiplano and the Atacama Salt Flat to the west. Afterward, relax in either the outdoor pool or heated indoor pool while sipping rica rica herbal tea. Take a book to the dining area and relax on the low slung sofas covered with alpaca blankets. When you have no energy left, belly up to the bar made of recycled railroad ties, and sip on Chile’s signature drink, pisco sour. And, may I suggest an order of Chilean sea bass? (Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included every day in the restaurant.) Afterward, grab a lounge chair and gaze at the star-strewn sky in what is known as the clearest sky in the hemisphere. With the high altitude, nearly non-existent cloud cover, dry air and lack of light pollution, it’s pretty spectacular. Fly back home over the Andes knowing that the Atacama Desert is, hands-down, one of the most stunning places in the world. And, at Tierra Atacama, it’s all just outside your private terrace door. As many Chileans would

The Festive in Frankfurt’s Christmas Market

By Demetra M. Pappas

I

tend to write destination holiday shopping articles each year because I enjoy travel, more than shopping. This is surely the result of having grown up in a family where women treated shopping like NFL football. During these forays, I was likely to be found hiding out under a rack of clothes, reading a novel or doing homework. As destination holiday shopping. I am the destination part, and I usually have a friend along, who is the shopping part. This year, the Frankfurt Christmas Market (which dates back to 1393) will be held from November rd , a season not so unlike ours. My choice is in honor of law school friend Ann McCloskey, who took me to Frankfurt (and throughout Germany) while “visiting” me during a summer program in Cambridge (the English one). The market stretches from the banks of the River Main across the Romerberg old town Center (in other words, similar geography to the annual summer Frankfurt Embankment Art Festival), then proceeds to St. Paul’s Square and Liebrauenberg to Haputwache. Hours are a civilized 10:00AM9:00PM (Sundays from 11:00AM-9:00PM). The market itself has traditional arts and crafts, culinary specialties (I have a friend there whom I call The Big Schnitzel, in honor of my addiction to that dish), a honey shop (for gifts, after dinner treats, or, for Greeks like me, tea).

Unlike the local strip mall (or even the posh environs of Fifth Avenue), the Frankfurt au Main scenic setting is fairy tale lovely. There is a lavishly Center, thousands of “fairy lights” illuminating the “townscape,” the old town hall and everything from the historical half timbered homes of the Romerberg, St. Paul’s and Frankfurt’s modern skyline. For those who want some tourism interspersed with their shopping, there are daily guided tours of the market entitled, “Stories, Sweets and Savories: Enjoy the Frankfurt Christmas Market with All of Your Senses.” (An inside secret: a New York colleague is obsessed with Frankfurt’s apple wine). On Wednesdays and Saturdays, there is music from the tower horns of the balcony of Old St. Nicholas Church (get it? St. Nick?) and on Saturdays/Sundays performances of international Christmas carols sung from a stage next to the Christmas tree. For those who remember Sarah Jessica Parker’s seemingly unlikely tour of Parisian City, Frankfurt’s local and regional gingerbread, “bethmannchen” (almond and marzipan biscuits) from dried plums) are just some of the sweet treats on offer.

Get Ready foR sNow! Skiers from the Western United States are under the impression that those who ski in the Northeast are the best skiers in the world because of the poor quality of snow we use. The abundance of snowmaking equipment and real, good, oldfashioned snow often gives Easterners an experience that rivals anyplace else in the country. And the number of ski areas in the Northeast can give their Western counterparts a run for their money in sheer numbers. For the purposes of this ski roundup we’ll limit ourselves to those resorts within a four hour drive of New York City. That time limit gives the weekender enough time to get to the resort and get in a fair amount of slope sliding before heading back home.

New York - The closest real slope is Belleayre in Highmount,

about a one and a half hour drive up the Thruway to exit 19 and then a half hour west on Rt. 28. Belleayre is run by the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation and is one of the few government operations that runs smoothly. Belleayre has a vertical drop of 1,404 with 55 trails including Nordic and Magic Carpet for kids. Eight lifts service the slopes with the more advanced trails on the upper mountain.

Hunter - Continue up the Thruway to Exit 20 and then follow the signs west to Hunter, arguably the favorite mountain for high school and college students. The drive is a bit over two hours. It’s also opting to become an all-around resort with the introduction of one of the best zip line complexes on any mountain. The resort boasts a 1,600-foot vertical with 55 trails spread over 240 skiable acres. There are 10 lifts servicing the resort with beginner and intermediate at Hunter can look like the Long Island Expressway during rush hour but no one seems to mind. All of the ski resorts are far less busy on weekdays as well as less expensive tickets. Seniors will pay here as well, but they never had the ski-free option to begin with. The cost is $20 for weekends and holidays and $15 weekdays.

Pennsylvania - New Yorkers heading for Pennsylvania ski resorts can reach them easily by crossing the George Washington Bridge and taking I-80 into Pennsylvania. If you continue on to the Crossings Outlet at exit 299 in Tannersville, you are only a few minutes from Camelback. Probably Pennsylvania’s premier ski resort it features new snow guns installed last year that provide the ability to ski even when nature as “green” or for beginners. A relatively new feature is a 50x50 foot air bag onto which crazy skiers and boarders can become airborne from a rise and land on it. There are 160 skiable acres with the longest run stretching some 1.14 per hour, cutting down on line time. It has, as well, some 18-snow tube lanes at the bottom of the mountain.

Vermont - The Green State has a host of ski areas from north to south and arguably the most popular one in the NortheastKillington. Just over four hours from New York, the road to Killington is virtually all-open highway except for a very short stretch through Lake George. Killington prides itself the last to close. There are a host of high quality accommodations within a few minutes of the resort, some at the base of the mountain. Killington offers skiing on option to ski from six peaks. There are 22 lifts including a gondola area. The majority of slopes are Blues (intermediate) followed closely by blacks and double blacks (advanced and “you’re out of your mind).

ESPA LIFE AT CORINTHIA HOTEL LONDON BY TRAVELIN’ GAL MAXINE ALBERT

W

ith the New Year almost upon us, I was primed for a getaway to a rejuvenating spa. How to combine the “It” spa with a great destination? After some research, I headed to the much lauded Corinthia Hotel’s ESPA in London. I knew I was in for a treat when a close confidante with impeccable taste said “That spa is sexy. You’ll never want to leave.” A flight on British Airways was seamless with big, comfy seats, so I arrived well rested. Located in central London and housed in a Victorian Palace overlooking the River Thames and Trafalgar Square, the luxurious 5 star Corinthia Hotel is the epitome of grandeur and glamour. The lobby – the hotels social hub, stunning and regal, boasts a dazzling ‘Full Moon’ crystal chandelier by Baccarat. Seven opulent two story penthouses themed around the ‘fabulous set’ such as royalty, high society and actors, offer sumptuously appointed décor, bespoke furnishings, artwork and expansive terraces with sweeping vistas. Posh suites and rooms are stylish, spacious, modern and elegant with large beds with the finest linens, huge marble bathrooms and glorious views. Food aficionados will love the two world-class restaurants in the hotel. I savored excellent Mediterranean fare at Massimo Restaurant and Oyster Bar - fish crudo and delectable homemade linguini with seafood followed by a cassata dessert to die for. Later in the evening, the cool chic crowd pours into the striking room as the well heeled habitués are downing after- dinner drinks. Equally impressive is Northall, with a sophisticated classic ambiance and emphasis on locally sourced foods and high quality ingredients from artisan suppliers. Luscious chutney and apple puree soup, perfectly done roast sardines and melt in your mouth Dover sole Meuniere were unsurpassed. The renowned 4 level spa is gorgeous and sensual, like a palace Cleopatra would have frequented, with fragrant raspberry orchids and black Italian marble. Not to give the wrong impression, men also use the spa and by the happy looks on their faces, thoroughly enjoy it. What’s really unique is that it is an ESPA Life, the flagship of the brand. This innovative spa integrates the essential harmony of mind, body and spirit for optimal health. A luxurious retreat combining spa with wellness, the latest techniques and alternative therapies, Espa Life is the wave of the future.

Next I was led to a cushy, private aromatic spa suite for a facial with Espa’s superlative cleansing and moisturizing products that made my skin look and feel softer and smoother. This was followed by a customized massage with scented vitality oil focusing on my neck, shoulders and legs. Needless to say, I felt rejuvenated. I continued through the oasis to the vitality pool with massage jets, a three level amphitheater sauna and black mosaic steam room. After gazing at the trance-inducing - a lavish den with plush couches and ottomans - I retired to the relaxation room, sipping ginger tea on a heated marble reclining chair.

I remembered what my friend said, “You’ll never want to leave.” With seventeen spa pods and excellent practitioners offering pampering age-defying facials, indulgent and therapeutic massages and a range of treatments from ayurvedic, osteopathic, homeopathic, detox, physiotherapy, a state of the art gym with personal training to marathon training, and a Daniel Galvin hair salon – ESPA Life is a home run. London is renowned for its pageantry and you’re not far from Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London with the royal jewels and audio tour by Jeremy Irons. I was agog at the Churchill Museum’s actual underground war rooms and recordings of the great orator himself. Don’t miss the extraordinary British Museum and Tate Modern. Stroll through Mayfair with its top galleries and designer shops. For fashionistas, the stylish shops of Knightsbridge, Oxford and Regent Street are a must, with visits to Selfridges and Harrod’s guaranteed to titillate even the most discerning shopper. Of course there’s the London Theater and the requisite afternoon tea.

Culinary highlights included a sublime dinner of diver scallops and hay- smoked Balmoral venison at the River Restaurant in the lovely Savoy Hotel, and an exquisite meal of Cornish crab and roasted cod at the utterly charming Capital Hotel’s ‘Outlaws Seafood & Grill.’ I feasted on the best Indian food at chic, trendy Amaya on Motcomb Street, famed for its 3 styles of grill cooking. prawns and amazing Tandori leg of lamb -

VERONA by narbeh minassian As you will have already seen just a few pages to the left, the Salviatino collection of hotels has a philosophy that marries the legend of the past with the beauty of the present. All in all, The Palazzo unique experience of a city that champions one of the most unmistakable and richest cultures in the world. As the city that had the honour of providing the setting for two of William Shakespeare’s plays, including the tragic story of those oh of creativity, poetry, and beauty. Its allure is long since established, which you can see for yourself at the Arena di Verona, which is a two thousand year old amphitheatre, and at the Castelvecchio, which was a castle that underpinned the strength and position of the city and is still considered among the most important buildings in the medieval times. Verona is also home to Lake Garda; one of the most popular European destinations. The Palazzo Victoria is ideally located for those wanting to experience all of the above and more. The business of antiques and ‘treasure hunting’ is huge. Joseph Maddalena, CEO and founder of the famed auction house Treasures, on the Syfy channel, is the leading the big screen. From Dorothy’s ruby slippers to Kate Winslet’s dress in the Titanic, he is the master at hunting down these rare objects. Joseph sat down with us to discuss his show, his career and the upcoming sale of rare historical documents that is taking place in th . The whole time he was informative, outgoing and intriguing to speak to. I hope you enjoy the piece as much as I liked interviewing him. Resident (R): Tell us about the show, Hollywood Treasures. Joseph Maddalena (JM): The show is a docu-reality series that follows my life as I travel the world tracking down Hollywood’s lost treasures. Most people don’t understand that you have to go back to the ‘60s and the ‘70s when the structure of how the big studios changed; it was the end of the era of contract players and the large studios went bankrupt and liquidated a lot of their assets. All of theses great lots like MGM and Fox sold off most of their props and costumes. MGM had the famous sale in 1970 where they liquidated everything on the lot; these pieces are scattered to the winds, all over the world because people bought them for so many different reasons. Costume shops would buy 10,000 garments for their stores not even knowing what they were buying: “Oh this is Clark Gabble’s!” these pieces ended up because they are just everywhere. R: I know you come from a family of antique dealers, but how did you get into the Hollywood antique business? JM:

out a way to support myself and at the time, in Hollywood, there were these great old bookstores. I quickly realized that there was a large price difference from what they sold for on the West Coast to what they sold for on the East Coast. I was able to make 20 to selling it to dealers in the east. Out of the blue, I got a call from this guy saying: “We are going to start up a business called Planet Hollywood could you help us?” I said sure, because they knew I had a large collection of Hollywood items and I had to start sourcing out material for them and that really kick started my career. R: Tell me about the format of the show. JM: The show has been on for two and half years. When we get a lead - for example we hear chitty chitty bang bang is in England, can get the person to let us sell it for them. R: What’s the most fascinating item you’ve found? JM: Last year, we sold the ruby slippers that Dorothy wore in the Wizard of OZ and those are now at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. That is probably the most

famous thing we have ever sold. R: JM: In 1970, when MGM was liquidating, they sold off a few pairs of the slippers and the archivist kept this pair and it was the famous witches pair when the house drops on the witch you can see that the heel is about a quarter of an inch taller than all of the other slippers. These were the beauty pair; all of the other pairs had felt bottoms for when Judy danced they wouldn’t make sound. This pair we sold, was previously sold bought them. R: You also auction off letters of famous individuals, tell us about that. JM: I got into before I began collecting and selling Hollywood items. Also this holiday, Lego has a “girl-themed” set designed to attract the future engineers that might prefer pink as opposed to blue. Called Lego Friends, this will likely see big demand as well. Remember TY Beanie Babies? Thought you dodged that bullet? Well, TY is back and is where it’s at. TY Beanie Balls, Beanie off the shelves all year long. They’re even themed for the holidays and range in size from stocking stuffer to basketball-sized. And for a quality plush toy, Douglas Cuddle Toys - a quaint New England toymaker consistently puts forth the best in plush. For your active outdoor child, EzyRoller is a great choice. You sit in it, move your feet from side to side, and away you go. It promises to be one of the best driveway gifts of the season. With a leg extension bar included, it works well for most kids aged four to twelve.

Zipline and the Slackers Slackline... think tightropes for beginners. All you need is a couple of trees and you’re ready to join in the X-games.... Skullduggery is a lesser known company as well with a great selection of products. Our favorite is the Light-up marble racetrack with glow-in-the-dark tracks and light-up race cars. Think Hot Wheels with a dose of West Coast cool. Great idea for a four to seven year-old gift. For those cold days indoors, Dabble is a great game, think of a modern day scrabble. Expose your kids to a new multi-cultural book series called Fujimini Adventure Series. Drop into Asian culture with websites and free games to enhance the experience. Lastly, if you’re shopping for a doll for that special little one, no one tops American Girl. However, if the price turns you off or there’s no American Girl store in town

to really enjoy the whole experience fully - here’s a little-known tip: Corrolle Dolls, made in France, are quality dolls (vanilla is injected into the molding process to give them a wonderful fresh smell) and very cute. They are not-so-coincidentally owned by the owners of American Girl, Mattel. You will the US, and likely at half the price of an American Girl doll. Say no to clothes – Younger kids love presents, toys and unwrapping gifts. They tend to be very easy to please if you stay with toys. Little kids do not consider clothes or pajamas to be gifts. Never give a little girl or boy a sweater! Our kids are very lucky, and sometimes not appreciative enough, but I was struck by their optimism — they epitomize holiday spirit and approach the special day with hope and joy. So let’s get them one perfect gift this year.

So it’s that time of year, the nights are getting darker, shorter and colder, the TV is one big holiday gift advertisement and your children are bouncing up and down with excitement and anticipation. So what’s the perfect gift for your children this year? Well clearly that depends upon how old your children are and what they are interested in. I think many of us are also concerned about the excess that happens this time of year and how to stop the disappointment that occurs on both sides when grandparents, aunts, and uncles get the kids something they really dislike. Kids don’t play poker for a reason! One thing you can do is to encourage your kids to create wishlists. One tried and true method is the pen and paper approach. Especially if they are six or under there are some fun toy magazines – such as the Toys“R”Us Toy Book where the kids can sit down and circle the things they want. It’s a fun

thing to do and if they use stick it notes they can keep changing their minds all the way to the 24th. For tweens and teens online wishlists are great way to capture what they want. Most are free and easy to use. My company has one with a feature that lets kids simply pin items from websites – virtual shopping online. This is a lot of fun for your kids, and it’s easy for them to add and edit. Even better, it’s a great way to let the extended family know what the kids want. Some even function like a registry, where the family can purchase directly from it. The wishlists can also be a great teaching tool. The young children especially have no concept of the difference between asking for a battery powered 4-wheel drive Jeep and a Matchbox car, so you can use this time- when they are hyper focused on what they want – to teach them about dollars and

Kaufman, features a beautiful actress, Jessica Chastain, who is made to appear plain. The title character, Catherine Sloper, is rather withdrawn because her oppressive father resents the fact that his wife died giving birth to her. He constantly compares her unfavorably to her mother. The duality of his character is that, on one hand, he is a doctor dedicated to his patients while, on the other, he insults his daughter at every turn. David Strathairn portrays him as less malevolent than unaware of his destructive conduct. When a handsome stranger (Dan Stevens of “Downton Abbey”) appears and woos Catherine, the doctor correctly assumes that the young man is a fortune hunter. As the girl’s aunt, Lavinia Penniman, Judith Ivey steals every scene, giving a performance reminiscent of Billie Burke in movies like “Dinner at Eight.” In the central suggesting that there is a quiet intelligence at work. That quality comes to the fore in the and wins instant applause from the audience.

If you’re looking for a child-friendly show, you can’t do better than the current revival of “Annie,” directed by James Lapine (at the Palace Theatre). The 1976 adaptation of the comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” (book) with songs by Charles Strouse and famous piece but the score has a number of others, including the lively “It’s the HardKnock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” “Annie” stars a self-assured 11-year old belter, Lilla Crawford, in the title role. She sings well, acts convincingly, with a tough New York accent, and can even dance. The other orphans are also a talented crew, with special praise for eight-year old Emily Rosenfeld. The villain is the man-hungry (an over-the-top Katie Finneran). Annie’s good luck is that she is taken in by the tycoon, Daddy Warbucks. He is played by a wonderful singing-actor, Anthony Warlow. In the course of the musical, they get to meet inspires him to create the New Deal. David Korins (the set designer) and Susan Hilferty (the costume designer) merit praise for their

On such a momentous occasion, there was only one person I could think of to take with me; Ms. Eileen Fulton of As the World Turns fame.

only thing unknown to me, it would have been strange enough, yet the physical setup of the orchestra (dispersed throughout the hall; some were behind us, others in the mezzanine) was the most intriguing thing and caught most of the audience off guard. While I can’t say that I was totally enthralled with the piece – there was quite a bit of dissonance and it seemed slightly pedantic – I did applaud the courage that it took to

This next piece, again full of dissonance, but this time tied into a theme of melody; Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring Stravinsky’s piece was rejected by the general public at its opening, it is now a beloved work of the cannon. Full of imagery and tension, both Ms. Fulton and I sat at the edge of our seats, breathlessly waiting for the next moment. By the end of the night, we were left jubilant and ecstatic that we had come to the performance. I know I speak for Eileen that we are so looking for another night. Sun, Smooth Jazz and Fun at Sunny Isles Beach

By Demetra M. Pappas

Jazz fusion/smooth jazz pianist/composer David Benoit has a new CD out, entitled, Conversation. Benoit appeared live on tour for this new album at the 5th Annual Sunny Isles jazz fest, where he took the stage at the City of Sunny Isle’s 4-acre Heritage Park, while people amiably picnicked under the stars of the relatively new (15 year old) city. Bossa nova tune “Feelin’ It,” has the splendid David Sills on tenor sax. It is likely that the appearance of Rose Max & Ramatis Brazilian Jazz , featuring Dorio Ferriera, at the 5th Annual Sunny Isles Jazz Fest in Florida was intended to complement this piece. That said, the melodic strains of Benoit’s smooth jazz piano playing are a highly recommended gift for those in the New York tristate, whose nerves welcome some musical soothing. There is a lovely romantic piece, entitled, “Kei’s Song on Benoit’s album, Freedom at Midnight). At Thanksgiving dinner this year, a friend who married that year was commended for his enduring romance; Benoit multiplies this exponentially by this lovely musical piece, an unimaginably adoring gift to his wife of several decades. While my trip to Sunny Isles Beach was to attend the jazz festival, it calls for travel this upcoming winter. The 2.5 miles of pristine sand are cleaned twice daily, are replete with lifeguard stations (that are manned with some incredibly nice people – one, named Justin, gave great details about the “motel history” development since, as he kept a watchful scan along the water even as he conversed with us). The motel history and the current development are all documented in Ellen J. Uguccioni’s lovely coffee table book, The Architecture of Sunny Isles (which the city published in 2012). At the Trump International Beach Resort, rooms face the beach or the bay (in other words, everyone has A Room with a View). The signature monumental sculpture (complete with the rotating axis points) in the foreground of Collins Avenue guarantees no new arrival will get lost. Trump’s Bella Beach has resort alert, here!). The burrata (mozzarella infused with cream) gives some of New York’s best antipasto bars some serious competition, the tiger shrimp worthy of the nomenclature and the kobe sliders nicely, colorfully (and healthfully) dressed, as they cheerfully invite diners who mistake them for appetizers to full

One Sunday morning in October I had the pleasure of taking a leisurely drive up to Westchester County for a brunch with friends and family. Our destination was the Hudson at Haymount House in Briarcliff Manor. An Historic property custom-built in 1910 by combination of old grandeur and modern sleek the Hudson River and has a row of beautiful windows to showcase the views of the river. We arrived just as brunch was starting and were greeted by a friendly and courteous staff. We were given a window seat and began our dining

After yet another round of Mimosas we ordered and of course let’s not forget the crispy side of bacon. After a couple of hours savoring each course we ended with deserts of Creme Brulee and Carrot Cake Macaroon and a Chocolate Torte. Everything we ordered was a delight to Riensenberger. Scott Riensenberger has developed his own style but his American sensibility is also apparent. He uses only seasonal and local ingredients to create working with leading chefs from around the world has given him the inspiration and desire to palate in a relaxed atmosphere. He has even gone so far as to offer gluten-free dishes. Overall I would have to confess that our experience had in the better restaurants in Manhattan and it was far more reasonably priced. Only a short car ride away from the city Hudson at Haymount House is well worth the trip for a wonderful dining

Italian as Nonna By Marianne Belmonte

Happy Hour anyone? Try Casa Nonna at 310 West 38th Street. Located in the garment district it’s a perfect place to go for casual authentic Italian fare. Offering lunch and dinner menus as well as a separate pizza menu along with a full service bar, you can’t go wrong with this choice. Translated Casa Nonna means grandmother’s house and well it is. Serving a variety of Italian favorites most of the cuisine is from the Roman and Tuscan regions, although you can still order meatballs made just like your Italian grandmother made and eggplant parmesan served on panini bread. and come with a variety of different toppings. Health conscious ? Order their whole wheat (pine nuts) pizzas. Pasta is house made and there are quite a few choices to choose from, cabonara, fungi, and butternut squash

gnocchi all great choices. Buffalo mozzarella with roasted peppers is fresh and creamy. Of course a basket of house made crusty garlic when it runs out, and it will, be sure to ask for more. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed and the wine list offers a good variety. There are two separate bars ample tables and the service is good. It is a perfect place to enjoy a dinner with friends or family, dine alone at the bar or bring a date. Any of the aforementioned circumstances would be suitable, it’s just that kind of restaurant. The food is tasty, the atmosphere is relaxed and the people, whether staff or customer are pleasant.

LAST WORD: GIVING BACK

By Christopher A. Pape The holidays are the time to be both grateful for what one has and to be generous of spirit. As an Italian-Catholic, I learned it was better to be meek and poor (for we shall inherit the Earth) rather than rich and powerful. But since we are the most successful nation on the planet, wouldn’t it be a good time to be thankful and try to help others, both within our own community and around the world, be as prosperous as we are? But how do we go about doing that? To use you have fed him for a lifetime.” We must teach those who are less fortunate. As a Canadian youth, with modest means, he was able to build an empire of good. Now serving in over forty countries, the organization helps disadvantage youth by building facilities in which the children can attend class and learn a fundamental education. Not only do I believe this to be a worthy cause but also one that can change the shape of the world. A lack of a quality education – a liberal Western education – is both unfair and unjust. And to deny every child a basic human right – is to deny their humanity. I strongly believe that The charity also inspires local youth – Americans, Canadians, Germans, Italians, etc. to give back to the world.
